Summary: Duo’s decision to paint his house prompts Hiiro to make some changes in their relationship.

"Changing Colors"

I could smell the fumes from the front yard. It was odd to see the usually tidy front porch in disarray but I could tell from the smell and the presence of paint cans, buckets, brooms and saw horses Hilde had finally talked Duo into some home repairs.

"Duo?" I called chuckling as I tripped over a fallen paint handle.

"Hiiro?" his voice answered from somewhere deep in the house and from the tone I could tell he was drowning. "Hey, man!" his voice brightened and I laughed hearing him trip over something that crashed, banged and clattered as I entered the hall. He looked so funny bouncing into sight with cream and green spots all over him and masking tape and newspaper attacking one leg.

"What in the world are you doing?" I laughed. The entire house was a wreck.

"Painting," he grinned. "I thought you weren't due back till next week?" he asked taming the newspaper and tape beast that had tried to eat his leg.

"Guess I should've called," I chuckled surveying the carnage again. Something felt odd, out of place. "Where's Hilde?"

The answer came quick and hard with nothing more than his uncertain glance and I suddenly understood better than I probably should have.

"You want something to drink?" he quickly recovered grabbing a rag to wipe some of the paint off with while he led us to what was left of the kitchen.

"Geez, Duo," I laughed again avoiding another pile of paint cans. "Couldn't you do one room at a time?"

"Needed a change I guess," he shrugged tossing me a can of soda from the fridge.

"When did she leave?" I asked trying to keep my tone light in spite of the subject matter.

"Two weeks ago," he replied in kind as he pulled a toppled stool from the floor and joined me at the bar.

"You ok?"

"That's what sort of bugs me," he replied pausing to sip his drink. "I'm not really all that upset about it."

He looked upset so I raised a brow to convey my observation and he added...

"I hate it when she's right."

"Right about what?"

I had thought the question moderately innocent but it stopped him cold, his drink paused in front of his mouth and his eyes watching me sideways for a moment before he suddenly sprang back into motion and took his drink.

"Lot's of things," he shrugged. "How long are you gonna be dirt side?"

"How long are you going to evade the subject?"

It took him a moment but he finally laughed at my stupid grin and relaxed.

"I dunno, Hiiro," he began gazing around the destroyed kitchen. "She's always talking about change, moving on... finding a direction whatever the hell that means."

"So she left?"

"Guess her direction was down a different road than me."

"I'm sorry, Duo," I told him sincerely.

"Naw, man," he sighed. "She was right. We're great as friends but this whole relationship thing was just a pain in the ass. I'm better off on my own."

"Absolutely," I chuckled eyeing the kitchen warily.

He laughed, crushed his soda can and tossed it in a pile of what I assumed was rubbish in the corner. That was all the time I needed to come to my decision.

"What some help?"

"I don't think you've got that much time," he chuckled.

"Actually," I replied as casually as possible. "I was thinking about taking a break." He paused in his effort to navigate the rummage on the floor in search of something to gape at me.

"You're serious?"

If I'd have known it would make him smile like that I would have offered a long time ago. "Yes, but you'll have to put me up." His smile fell into a frown and I felt as if I'd stepped over that line I always try to stay well back from.

"Ummm, the guest room is... sort of..."

"You don't have a couch?" I laughed.

"Spilled green paint on it," he explained. "I guess you could take my bed."

"I'm not going to take your bed," I insisted. "We can share." Once again he stopped still as a stone and something in my chest thumped hard. "Is that... a problem?" I asked not really sure exactly what I expected him to say.

"No... shit... yes," he looked so flustered I stood to go to him feeling my chest thump again when he gasped softly and stepped away. "That's probably not a good idea," he began looking a bit frightened but something inside me was very much enjoying the desperation in his eyes.

"Why is that?" I asked pressing the issue with my continued advance.

"Because..." He licked his lips and gasped softly when he back hit the wall. "Hilde said..."

"What?" My pulse was pounding in my ears and I knew I'd stepped way over that line as I pressed in close to him.

"She said..." he breathed gazing uncertainly into my eyes.

It was such a thrill so see him standing before me like that. I had dreamed about it so many times, felt the softness of his kiss in my mind but until that moment I had never entertained the thought that he might actually accept my feelings for him.

"She said I was in love..."

"Yes?" I whispered leaning in so the word warmed his lips.

Nothing in all of creation could have brought more joy to my heart than when he softly parted those lips and said, "...with you."

So I kissed them and let my body tell him all the things I felt for him. He seemed to have a lot to say as well but we didn't actually speak much until we were lying in a sweaty heap in the middle of his kitchen floor about an hour later.

"So," he grinned up at me just like I had always wanted him to. "How long did you say you could stay?"

I laughed and kissed him and took great pleasure in the way he gasped because we were still coupled together. "I think maybe it's time you stopped playing house and came home."

"Une still wants me?" he chuckled.

"Tells me to recruit you every time I come over," I smiled. "Besides," I told him kissing his neck. "You're my partner... and I miss you."

"Then who's gonna clean up this mess?" he laughed.

"I'll take leave."

"Really?"

"It’ll be fun," I grinned and kissed him again.

"Why do I get the feeling we're never going to get finished?" he chuckled feeling my hips press down into him.

"We'll hire someone."

"Then what'll we do?" he breathed rising to meet me and I smiled as I kissed him and replied...

"We'll think of something."
