" Family Ties"

Ch 3

“Morning, Duo.”

“Oh, hi, Kate.”

“Sorry about last night,” she blushed, averting her eyes. “I was just so embarrassed.”

“Understandable,” he smiled. “I didn’t mean to put you in that situation.”

“Oh, it’s alright,” she replied. “He’s your bother after all. I bet he’s seen worse.”

I almost choked.

“So, you want to get together later?”

“He is unavailable,” I interjected and Duo turned to gape at me.

“Oh,” she chirped, obviously confused. “Well, then, there’s a movie tomorrow…”

“He won’t be available tomorrow either,” I informed her, ushering him along.

“But…”

“Sorry, Kate,” he grinned back at her and I felt my face flame when he beamed at me.

Our classes are well advanced over the normal students. We were required to study and research advanced mathematical theories in our morning class before spending the remainder of the day providing training exercises for cadet pilots. In the end, all mobile suits except the Gundam’s where to be disarmed; however, their usefulness went far beyond an instrument of war. Many of the pilots being trained would someday help build new colonies or reconstruct fallen empires on Earth.

“Hi, Duo,” Quatre smiled in his usual way when we arrived.

Wufei looked up from his book and I took a moment to note that his eyes flickered almost imperceptibly to take in Duo’s entire form. I had never noticed this sort of thing before but considering the night we had just had it was possible I was being oversensitive.

“Hey, Quat,” Duo returned, going to join the blond boy. They often liked to pair up during class, leaving Trowa and I to work quietly while Wufei did a fine job of ignoring the lot of us.

I was certain I was imagining things when I saw Trowa leering at Quatre’s legs under his desk but all he did when he caught me catching him was cock a half grin and raise a brow. Perhaps I wasn’t being oversensitive after all.

“Have you told him?” I asked at afternoon maneuvers.

Duo was on the field with Quatre and Wufei demonstrating battle tactics.

“We’re going out Saturday night,” Trowa grinned.

“He accepted you?” I was mildly shocked but considering my relationship with my brother there was no room for judgment.

“We shall see,” he replied. “I’m afraid I get a little tongue tied around beautiful boys.”

“Is that why you never speak to Duo?” I snickered but it died quickly enough when he nodded.

“You’re brother is a very attractive guy,” he confessed and I felt the hairs on the back of my neck bristle until he added, “But Quatre, I don’t know.” I smiled knowing full well what that far away look in his eyes felt like. “It’s like I can see forever in his eyes.”

Forever. Duo would always be my brother but I had no idea how long he could remain my lover. From the way Quatre and Trowa behaved over the next couple of weeks I gathered things were going well between them and though I truly wished them the best, watching their budding romance left a shadow on my heart. I wanted so much to be able to take Duo’s hand under table like Trowa did Quatre’s or to openly praise him with the adoration he deserved but we were forced to keep our affection hidden in our room like we always had.

Beyond the door, we were brothers but behind it we had fallen into a dream of blissful unity. I could feel his eyes on me when I worked, telling me when he longed for more intimacy. He would come to me in the night and quail the passion my dreams inspired and we spent hours on end simply laying gently entangled while we studied or relaxed until Quatre brought it to our attention that we were spending a great deal of time in our room.

“You to need to loosen up a little,” he commented one day at lunch. “You’re always holed up in your room. Don’t you ever stop working long enough to have a little fun?”

His blond brows drew together when Duo spit soda out his nose.

“Why don’t you come with us to Hollandale?” Trowa asked. “We could use you’re help.”

“I don’t know,” I evaded badly.

“We’ve got that essay to finish,” Duo nodded, blowing his nose.

“There is an exhibition on thermal energy downtown,” Wufei interjected, making those hackles on my neck stand up.

“Really?” Duo asked. This was his field and Wufei knew it, if there was any way to get him to spend the day out he had just found it.

“Dusenburg’s theories will be discussed,” our Chinese partner tossed in casually but I could feel the excitement building in my sibling.

“I thought he was in Europe.”

“His partner will be leading the lecture.”

“Epstein is here?” Duo gasped. “Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“I just did,” Wufei smiled and I decided I definitely did not like the situation. “Would you like to go?”

“Hell,yeah, I would!” Duo crowed.

“When does it start?” I interjected.

“I’m afraid I only have the two seats,” Wufei replied.

I knew the glare I shot his way was anything but friendly but I didn’t care for the implications of the smirk on his face.

“Oh… um… you don’t mind do you, Hiiro?”

I minded quite a bit actually.

“Why should he mind?” Wufei inquired, leaving me with a strong desire to slap him.

“We can work on the essay later tonight,” Duo soothed but I still had to bite the inside of my lip to keep from protesting.

I had all but chewed a hole in it when Duo still hadn’t returned three hours after the lecture was over. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust him, he had promised to keep himself only for me as long as I provided him with the affection he needed, but I couldn’t shake the dreadful feeling that somehow Wufei might steal his heart. I am only his brother after all and unable to provide him with things like an afternoon date. My heart jumped when I looked out the window for the hundredth time and they were walking down the path.

My first impulse was to rush out and meet them but that would have given way too much away so I was forced to watch while they talked silently with each other in the courtyard. My hand came up to press against the glass when they stopped and Duo laughed. He laughed that laugh usually only reserved for Father or myself, for family. Wufei was not our family, yet there they were, Duo blushing warmly as he chuckled away and my stomach turned over when I saw Wufei gently smile.

This could not be happening. Could I have tried so hard to hammer a wedge between us and failed only to have another come and take away the only joy I had ever known? But it was wrong, morally unacceptable on so many levels. It wasn’t enough that we were both male but to be brothers as well was totally incomprehensible. Could Wufei give him what I could not?

“Hi,” he smiled, though I barely heard him as he dumped his bag on the floor. “You ok,” he asked curiously, coming to slip into my lap.

I felt the warmth of him wash over me as he slid his arms around my neck and laid his head on my shoulder.

“Sorry it’s so late,” he said on a long sigh and I bit back the dread long enough to let my arms hold him once more. “Fei wanted to get something to eat after the lecture and we sort of lost track arguing about it.”

“Fei?” I repeated softly.

“Yeah,” he chuckled. “He hates it so it’s his new nickname.”

A pet name; how disturbingly cute.

“You enjoyed yourself,” I commented, shutting my eyes in the hope he wouldn’t see the sorrow in my words.

“Mmm,” he sighed. “But I missed you,” he smiled, gracing me with a warm kiss and I suddenly felt as if holding him were the core of my very existence. “Nnnn, take me to bed,” he whispered and I rose with him in my arms and did as he bid.

We made love for a very long time that night. My need to touch him far outweighing any carnal lust that might have driven us over the edge but when the time came it moved me like it never had before and I finally couldn’t hold back any longer.

“I love you,” I confessed as I held his trembling body close. I understood as he clung to me tighter that it had nothing to do with who our parents were, what gender we were born as, or who either of us ended up sharing our lives with. I loved him no matter what.

I woke with him still nestled in my arms and smiled as I gazed upon his angelic face, a small frown creeping into the corners of my mouth when I noticed the shimmer of crystalline salt marking the trail of tears on his cheeks. He had cried after I fell asleep and I was inspired to kiss the absence of his tears.

“Mmmm, morning,” he moaned, snuggling closer to me as I held him.

“Morning.”

“You were seriously incredible last night,” he chuckled softly and I heard the mild intoxication in his tone.

“You make it easy,” I told him, feeling very much as if I could float away at the praise.

“How easy?” he whispered, arching up to kiss me and I rolled him over to prove to him just how easily he controlled me.

I had never in my wildest dreams considered the possibility that our Father would walk in the door.

“DAD?!”

“SHIT!”

“Wait! Umm… we can explain…” Duo shot off scrambling for his clothes but I could see by the steady lack of expression on our Father’s face there was no point to his efforts.

“General?”

“Mom?!”

“What’s going on here?” Mother asked and I felt my skin crawl as her eyes narrowed behind her glasses.

“Nothing!” Duo barked, jerking his pants on. “We were just… Hiiro was helping me…”

“How long has this been going on?” Father asked and Duo finally sighed and plopped down in a chair.

“What’s happened?” Mother asked again, leveling her considerable gaze on my distraught brother as I replied.

“Since we were kids.”

“Treize?”

“It would appear our sons are much closer than we were aware,” Father told her, confirming her suspicions because her eyes went brutally cold and Father suddenly looked very nervous.

“Une,” he spoke warily as her eyes began to sparkle with rage.

“This is your fault!”

“I told you this façade would fail,” he defended and Duo turned curious eyes upon me but I had no idea what they were talking about.

“If you could control that lust of yours!” she growled.

“Who said it was because of me!?” Father countered.

“Well, where else would they get it from!?”

“That is not the issue.”

“You and that Chang boy!”

My head was spinning with the implications of what they were saying.

“Now see here!” he snapped. “If it wasn’t for Wufei we still wouldn’t know!”

“Wufei told you?” I gasped rounding on Duo. “You told him!?”

“He figured it out,” Duo replied sheepishly.

“What does Wufei have to do with you?” I demanded of our Father who shut up very quickly when the Chinese boy appeared by his side.

“He is my lover,” Wufei confessed, not seeming concerned at all that the man’s wife was standing beside him.

“You were supposed to stay quiet!” Mom growled.

“Considering the circumstances, that was no longer possible,” Wufei countered coolly.

“Wait,” Duo interjected, holding up a steadying hand. “You’ve been sleeping with my Dad?”

“For some time,” the Chinese boy smiled, leaning back into our Father’s wide chest.

“Mom?”

“It’s all right,” she sighed. “I knew about it all along. You’re father and I agreed when we took you in that it would be best to raise you in as normal as family environment as possible. But then he met this one,” she snipped, causing Father to wrap a protective arm around Wufei’s shoulders.

“Wait a minute,” I cut in. “`Took us in?`”

“You were chosen and placed with us because of your natural skills to become Gundam pilots,” Father informed us.

“You mean… you’re not our real parents?” Duo asked, flashing a rather greedy grin my way and I have to admit, though everything I had believed my life to be had shattered and fallen apart the possibility of what might grow from the shards was most appealing.

“No, son,” Mom sighed heavily. “I’m sorry but…”

“That means we can legally be lovers,” Duo smiled and I accepted him into my arms with no small amount of joy.

“What?” Mother gasped but Father was already guiding her out the door.

“We’ll talk about it later,” he soothed.

The first thing out of Duo’s mouth when the door closed was, “I love you,” and he kissed me like there was no tomorrow. “I’ve always loved you. Gods! I can’t even believe this is real!”

I was almost as giddy as him. He really loved me, all this time, and suddenly I wondered how I could ever have doubted it.

“Maybe it’s not,” I laughed, dumping him on the bed. “Maybe I’ve just finally gone over the edge.”

“Stark raving mad,” he giggled and kissed me again but I wasn’t feeling all that merry anymore and took advantage of the moment to slip under his defenses and love him blind.

We attended Trowa and Quatre’s wedding last week. It’s been almost a year since that day in our dorm and we have our own place now. Mother moved out to pursue her military career while Wufei moved in with Father, or rather, the General. Duo and I still refer to him as our dad, which sometimes throws people for a loop when they realize we are lovers but no one has openly questioned it. Perhaps they think it a term of endearment.

The disarmament is going well. With the Gundam’s to protect the peace, most countries were more than happy to find better uses for their military budget. Things are fairly quiet now, which leaves a lot of time for goofing off, something Duo excels at. I never dreamed I would be socking away memories like hot sex in a Gundam’s cockpit or making love endlessly on the dark side of the moon. It’s amazing how our lives have turned out, war orphans charged with keeping the peace for all of mankind, but I know we will succeed. Duo and I are one and the same, our destinies forever intertwined, brothers in arms and lovers at heart.
