There was less than two minutes between compromise and all out assault and suddenly the forest all around was riddled with fire from above and explosions. Our attempt to skirt around the roadblock had put us far enough out of civilian territory that the military had no reason to hold back. They had three Aries, and unknown number of ground units and were closing the net damn fast when Hiiro dashed out into a clearing and I felt my heart stop. All I could do was hunker down and watch as the Aries descended on him. My mouth went dry as I watched him face down the guns, his aim true as he sent a single shot into the aft engine then darted from beneath the gargantuan machine as it careened and crashed into the ground. “Hiiro!” I heard myself bark, my mind refusing to believe as he jumped and scrambled up the flailing Aries using a well placed shot to bypass the hatch locks and neutralize the pilot. I swear I didn’t breathe until I saw the pilot fall and knew Hiiro had taken control because the suit suddenly spun, climbed high and attacked the other two. “Crazy, god damn fool of a…” I don’t even remember all the names I called the son of a bitch while I reloaded and flanked around behind the division of off road ATV’s that were combing the woods. Two went down with less than a thought and I wondered if they thought this was some sort of game cause they were a damn sight more interested in playing with their vehicles than finding the enemy. Two more hit the dirt when they discovered the wire I had set to the southeast of their sector the hard way. It was not a pretty way to die but I was desperately out numbered and had little choice but to take them down by any means necessary. I was working on relieving one of the bodies of its grenades when I heard the first of the Aries scream and hit the ground, my head snapping up as my stomach did a vicious tumble to confirm it had not been Hiiro’s. He was chasing the remaining enemy through the sky leaving me to return my attention to the task at hand and I had just enough time to lob one of the explosives at the three remaining ATV’s and roll into the bushes as it blew one of them to bits. The others got off a round of shots in my direction, one catching me in the upper arm setting it on fire but there was no time for pain. The sound of rapid fire above drew my attention long enough to see that Hiiro had his hands full, the last suit was doing its best to cause whatever damage it could in its last ditch effort as I rolled over, gun in hand and pumped the idiot jumping over me full of lead. He crashed into a tree when he landed but he never felt it because he was dead before his wheels ever hit the ground. The last of my rivals never knew what hit him. I was ready to face him head on rolling to my feet, my aim centered on him as he raced toward me when I heard the tell tale sound of a mobile suits death wail. The subsequent explosion brought the huge machine down through the trees not twenty feet away. Branches and splintered tree trunks went flying everywhere as I dove for cover but the guy on the ATV was right in the impact zone and screamed as the Aries came down on his head. I hurt all over and couldn’t seem to catch my breath. What a fucking ride! Everything around me was in flames, the Aries coughing and spitting as minor explosions lit up the forest but my mind was attuned to the sound of Hiiro’s suit landing in a nearby clearing. I don’t know how he got to me so fast but I had barely caught my breath when he fell to the earth by my side. “Don’t move!” he shouted shoving me face first into the ground when I tried to move and I realized something was wrong when I felt something tug at my back and it wasn’t his hand. Shit. “Status?” I croaked fearing the worst. I still couldn’t really feel any pain but the pressure was there. I grimaced and dug my fingers into the ground anyway when he jerked it out, my mind making a note that it had been a shard of a tree trunk that had lodged in my back when it dropped on the ground beside me even as it wondered why I wasn’t screaming in agony. I didn’t get much time to ponder the moment however, as Hiiro jerked me up and rolled me over checking me for further signs of injury as I again tried to catch my breath. “Anything else?” he demanded and I swear to the gods I lay there and giggled as he jerked my shirt up and felt me all over. “N… no!” I laughed, pushing his hands away but he didn’t seem to find it as amusing as I did and dove on my arm ripping my shirt to get a look at the flesh wound. “Your pack stopped the stake,” he informed me. Hn. So that’s why it didn’t hurt. “Minimal damage,” followed by a quick jerk that set me on my feet but we ended up right back on the ground when the suit he had used suddenly exploded. “You gotta stop making these advances, man,” I chuckled, teasing him about having landing on top of me and my heart skipped at beat when he glared down at me. For a moment, just an instant of relative time, I thought he was going to lean down and kiss me again but I was suddenly jerked to my feet instead and the moment was gone before it even had a chance to be. We found two of the ATV’s that were still in working order and gathered up what munitions we dared take the time for before heading off into the hills. We’d have to ditch the vehicles pretty quick but we needed to put some fast distance behind us, not to mention we could take a few hours off our trip, but it meant having to dive into the next town which was a small city nestled beside a large river so we ran full out until the ATV’s were running out of gas then dropped them in a little lake we passed in an orchard outside Greenbough. We needed a change of clothes, new transportation and a chance to assess the damage before we slipped into town however, so we headed for whatever farmhouse would be responsible for the cherry orchard we found ourselves jogging through the middle of. Cherry trees are very pretty. Especially when they are in full bloom like they were that day. Part of my mind wondered how the world could be in such a sorry state when the sky was so blue and the wind was tugging at the beautiful blossoms sending a cascade of flittering white and pink pedals dancing in the breeze. Hiiro had fallen behind so I stopped to let him catch up and kicked myself mentally when I noticed him limping. I had completely forgotten about his ankle in the mad rush but it must have been hurting pretty bad because he didn’t notice I had stopped and ploughed right into me knocking us both in a sprawling heap on the ground. “You know,” I panted in amusement. “I’m beginning to think you just like laying on top of me,” but I didn’t get the laugh. My brow knitted wondering why he had suddenly stopped moving altogether but a quick check revealed he appeared to be asleep. Passed out would be a more fitting description I suppose, but my mind refused to believe Hiiro was weak enough to allow that to happen. No, he just needed a nap and it looked like I was going to be the lucky one to play pillow for him for a while. “Sorry, partner,” I sighed, brushing his bangs back for a moment before daring to run my hand down his hair. Just a moment more, that’s all I wanted. This was what it was all about wasn’t it? Being able to simply lie in the grass and gaze up at the open sky, feeling the breeze tugging playfully at my hair as pale pedals danced by. My fingertips felt so cool lying on the back of Hiiro’s neck, his gentle breathing warmed my chest, creating a peaceful contentment inside me that made me smile in spite of the dire situation and everything just sort of melted away. For a time, nothing existed anymore, not the war, military or Gundam’s, colonies or the soldiers we had left in the forest that day. There was just me; that deep blue sky and Hiiro’s warmth as he laid his weight on me and slept and I felt, for the first time in my life, very happy. However, it was not to last. “Hiiro?” I gently nudged, after what seemed like a horrendously short amount of time. “Hey, buddy. We need to get going.” “You’re awake?” he asked, lifting his head and I suddenly realized he had never been asleep. He ignored the crimson blush that rose to my cheeks for which I was eternally grateful as we untangled ourselves and headed off to find what means we could. The farm was a dream come true. They had a barn set off from the main house, an outdoor well complete with hand pump and a clothes line full of drying laundry. Pay dirt. There was only one little problem in the form of a young lady that was adding to the line of laundry while we stalked her from the edge of the trees and argued over how to deal with her presence. “We don’t have time for this,” Hiiro was grumbling. “She’s not the damn enemy,” I countered, determined not to upset this girl’s life anymore than necessary. “She is if she stands in our way.” “Damn it, Hiiro!” I hissed. “Can’t you at least pretend to be human for a minute!?” I think I hurt him with that line but I was sick and tired of killing people and I wasn’t about to go compromising an innocent civilian if we could help it. “I am human,” he informed me, leaving me feeling damn guilty over the accusation that he wasn’t but like he said, we didn’t have time to mess around. “Then act like it and let’s see if we can get through this without leaving her in need of a therapist.” His nod left me feeling a little giddy because I not only recognized the attempt at behaving more sympathetically toward our human obstacles, it also indicated he was willing to trust me which admittedly, was probably more important to me than it should have been. Ok, time to turn on the charm. “Wait here,” I told him running a hand through my hair and dropping my pack before I strolled out of the trees and strutted off in her direction. I smiled when I got close enough to hear that she was singing. I just hoped she kept on singing because I had no doubt Hiiro was out there in the bushes aiming a bullet between her eyes. Her eyes went wide the moment she saw me, the shirt in her hand dropping to the ground as her mouth dropped open and I knew instantly she had no doubt exactly who she was looking at. So much for plan A. “Oh my god!” she exclaimed and I stepped between her and Hiiro so he couldn’t shoot her as I raised my hands to show her I had no weapon. “You’re one of those guys the military is looking for!” Smart girl. “I’m not going to hurt you,” I began, but she was already in motion. “Where’s your friend?” she asked excitedly, peeking around me to peer at the trees but I stepped in front of her again. “There were two of you right?” I thought for a moment I might just scream in frustration when she suddenly hollered, “MOM! MOM! You shouldn’t be here! MOM!” “What is it Can…” a middle aged woman called, stepping out of the kitchen door but her words faded upon seeing me and I just wished for a moment that things had worked out better for them. “It’s those rebels from the colonies!” the girl piped up and my brow knit because she was grinning from ear to ear. “Well, don’t just stand there child!” the woman called hurriedly. “Get them inside out of plain sight!” They were sympathizers. Sweet. “Where are you going?!” the girl gasped when I turned toward the trees. “My partner,” I informed her, indicating to Hiiro he should join us. Her smile spread enthusiastically over the young face when he emerged jogging to join us and we got a taste of something that was rarely experienced in our line of work. Gratitude. Candice and Bernice Curshaw turned out to be activists who often lobbied for the freedom of the colonies as their father and husband, Darien, had been born on one of the lesser rotations out near L1. We never got to meet the man because he was out doing what all farmers do during the day, working his ass off, but I memorized their names and address, promising myself I’d make damn sure they were well rewarded for their aid once the war was over as we were supplied with fresh clothes, a place to bathe, a full meal and pack of take along munchies and two shiny new pistols that had been hiding under Mr. Curshaw’s mattress. We retained our own of course, but were in need of ammunition so the spares were a god send. Most of the weapons we had taken off the soldiers were too large to carry on our persons and stowed away in my pack. “I only wish we could do more,” Bernice was saying as we prepared to leave. “You will,” I smiled, tucking my new pistol away. “Every time you speak out against the oppression.” “You’ll be careful wont you?” Candice smiled nervously, strapping a canteen to Hiiro’s pack. “No promises,” I grinned and gasped when she launched herself at me and kissed me. “Please don’t fail,” she begged and I suddenly felt a very strong urge to blow something up but the shock of seeing her turn and latch onto Hiiro, kissing him full on the lips as well while his eyes just about bugged clean out of his head wiped it away pretty quick. “Never been kissed?” I teased as we prepared to straddle the bike the Curshaw’s had bestowed upon us. “Only by you,” he countered and I’ll be damned if I wasn’t the one that ended up blushing though it was kind of cool to know I had been his first kiss, too.
