" Prince Duo"

Ch 4

Duo rolled over and pulled his consort closer. He felt oddly cold without the presence of his blue eyed slave no matter how close they snuggled. He sighed again in his frustration.

“Oh, stop brooding,” the blond softly admonished.

Duo sighed again and let him crawl over top of him and straddle his hips. “I could take your mind off of it for awhile,” the blond boy cooed seductively as he began to unlace the prince’s tunic.

Duo squeezed his thighs and pushed his hips up into him as he relaxed back into the grass. “I doubt we have time,” he said softly but he wasn’t doing anything to stop him from continuing with his distraction.

The sun had come up about an hour before, just after Hiiro had left. The prince had tried to take a nap but he just couldn’t stop thinking about the blue eyed boy and ended up doing nothing more than disturbing his consort’s rest. The blond pushed his shirt open and leaned down to kiss his chest. Duo pressed his hips upward into him again and moaned softly, letting his eyes drift closed and just drinking in the delectable sensations. A strange smell drifted across his senses as the blond nibbled on his left ear. Curious he opened his eyes and came face to face with huge, reptilian green eyes as a massive head leered down from no more than two feet above.

“AH!” he gasped, scrambling to get both him and his consort out from under the gargantuan head. Hiiro almost laughed out loud as the beast seemed to chuckle at the two startled boys and retracted its imposing presence from the glen.

Duo looked down at the ground as if trying to gather his wits, when his head snapped back up there was fire spitting from his eyes. “NATAKU!” he wailed but he didn’t have a chance to say anything more before the blond launched himself at the beast’s big face and clung to it like it was his long lost teddy bear.

“Nataku!” the slight blond sang, hugging the scaly head with all his might. The big green eyes of the creature slid shut as it affectionately nuzzled the boy in return.

“You should keep a shorter leash on your pets,” a smooth tenor advised as the raven haired boy slid off the back of the dragon. His feet no sooner hit the ground than he was tackled to the grass by an over exuberant blond.

“Wufei!” the boy cried, smiling down at the dark eyed boy’s scowling face. The dark expression didn’t seem to bother the blond one little bit as he began kissing his face all over.

Duo regained his feet and laughed at the pair. “And how would you do your job if I insisted on keeping you close to me?” he inquired.

“I wasn’t … referring… to... me,” the raven haired boy replied through the rain of kisses.

“Yes, well,” Duo said glancing at Hiiro as he sat watching from his mount. “Some tethers were never meant to bind.” Hiiro cocked a brow in his direction then looked past him at the pair on the ground as if to say ‘ahem’.

Duo turned to find that the blond’s kisses had turned less playful. He was dipping into the dark haired boy’s mouth quite deeply as his slim hands slipped down the back of his pants and pulled him harder against his hips.

Duo shook his head and walked over to the pair, grabbed the blond by the back of his shirt and pulled him off the newcomer.

“Hey!” the raven haired boy complained, sitting up to scowl at the prince.

“Later” Duo told him. “We don’t have time right now. What news have you?”

“Nothing new,” Wufei replied dejectedly as his eyes wandered over to the pouting blond again. He looked as if he might defy the prince’s command for a moment then seemed to think better of it. His gaze then wandered to Hiiro as he dismounted. “I just thought you might like your runaway returned.”

“You exposed yourself for that?” the prince scowled.

Wufei’s eyes took in the smiling blond again as he grinned, “Not entirely.”

Duo threw his hands up in frustration. “Fine!” he snapped half heartedly. Wufei smiled and got up as the blond bounced happily on the balls of his feet. “Take him. But have him back at the palace by nightfall.”

“Yes, my Liege,” Wufei grinned, mounting his dragon. The blond ran over and jumped up, clinging to the beast’s face again as it smiled and turned its big head, depositing the boy in its companion’s lap. As it spread its great wings and prepared to take flight Duo shouted after them “And don’t overindulge him! I need him with his wits about him tonight!” But Wufei merely grinned demonically as they took off into the morning sky.

Duo turned a bright smile on his remaining companion. “You’ve returned,” he chirped. Hiiro just stared at him dumbly then nodded. “Will you be staying long?” the braided boy asked cheerfully.

Hiiro paused to consider him. He simply could not make any sense out of him. It wasn’t like he had much choice when he had dragons falling out of the sky during escape attempts. Still, the dragon was gone now and the prince was making no attempt to bind him against his will. He had thought about it a lot on the trek back to the glen. His home was gone. It had died with his clan. There was nothing to go back to. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do now but the thought of getting another shot at the slave trains was appealing to him so he had decided to stick with the prince for a while and see how things panned out. Maybe he could help free the oppressed people of this strange land.

“For a time” he replied.

If he thought Duo’s smile could get no brighter he had been dead wrong. It took his breath away. “Great!” the prince beamed, heading for his mount and slipping into the saddle. “We’ll be home before lunch if we ride hard,” he told him. Hiiro nodded and followed him into the morning light.

He had thought to rein in his mount several times to let Duo’s gelding regain his wind only to find the horse didn’t need his consideration. It was keeping up quite easily with the stallion. Neither of the mounts seemed to have really broken a sweat when they arrived hours later at the palace. He had to wonder what kind of feed they were giving the animals as a page took them off towards the stables.

Duo’s land was beautiful with thick forests surrounding an ancient castle high on a hill. He could almost see the blue/violet mountains of his homeland in his mind’s eye as he gazed out over the eastern sky. It seemed like so long ago.

He wasn’t really surprised as much as satisfied that his assumptions had proven sound when he saw all the smiling faces that greeted the braided boy. He was truly loved by all that served him. Most everyone that greeted them wore some semblance of his house’s mark either by an arm band or a necklace or the flash of an anklet from beneath a hem. None of them wore the choker style that he had been given though. He assumed it meant they were his personal consorts. Still, the idea that all these people had been bought and paid for grated on his sense of morality.

He noticed the wagons of the procession that had followed them from Nobara being unloaded as they made their way across the courtyard. When they came to the base of the stair leading into the palace he saw a man standing in the doorway of the huge, double doors that led into an ante chamber. Duo’s eyes brightened considerably when he saw the gentle face smile down at him and ran up the steps two at a time to kneel in front of the black cloaked man, kissing his hand and talking a mile a minute. Hiiro saw the man’s eyes look at him appraisingly as he ascended the stairs to join them.

“...was as we feared,” the prince was saying as he stood beside the man. “Lord Barton would sooner cook his own feet as agree to our terms. Hiiro!” he beamed, pulling him up the final two steps. “Father, this is Hiiro. He’s come to stay with us for a while. This is Cardinal Maxwell,” he told Hiiro with a grin. “Advocate to the Crown and my dear friend.”

So this was the man that technically ran the country until the prince came of age and became King. The man’s soft, brown eyes belied a certain strength that not even his warm smile could completely conceal. He offered his hand to the newcomer who took it and kissed it respectfully. Hiiro didn’t adhere to the odd religions of this land but he saw no reason to insult the man.

The Cardinal spoke very little as they made their way through the palace, content to listen to the braided prince go on and on about his journey. He had pulled no punches either, once again surprising the blue eyed boy when he had included their odd sexual encounters as if they were the highlight of his trip. The Cardinal had only chuckled and winked as the blush filled Hiiro’s cheeks.

“Has Lady Relena returned to her home, yet?” the prince finally asked. Hiiro had wondered when he would get around to something that actually bore some resemblance to the affairs of running a Kingdom.

“She’s taken up residence in the south wing,” the older man replied. “I believe it is her intent to stay till the end of the week and try to…talk some sense into you,” he finished with a smile.

“Splendid!” the braided boy grinned. “I should go and greet her. Will you be alright?”

The man waved a hand at him dismissively and watched as he tugged Hiiro down the hall toward the south wing, shaking his head and smiling as he turned and made his way in the opposite direction.

The prince stopped off by the kitchen so they could grab a bite to eat. Hiiro had never known a ruler that would walk into his own kitchen and make himself a sandwich while he charmed the skirts off the cooks but he found it most entertaining. They left them blushing furiously and giggling like a bunch of school girls as they made their way through the winding palace halls.

Duo pointed out different areas of interest as they went; the armory for instance. He told Hiiro he should visit and get himself properly equipped before nightfall. That little blade he was still carrying wasn’t going to keep him alive forever. Hiiro had been shocked into stunned silence once again. What kind of master openly armed his slaves?

He had also pointed out the baths and the stairs that lead to his personal chambers. Hiiro felt almost as if he were walking through some sort of oddly breezy dream by the time they reached the south wing. Everything about this boy seemed surreal. No one was this happy. The prince’s light air seemed to permeate everything around him giving the entire palace the odd feeling of a fairytale.

They entered a large chamber where there were several servants and a smug and tired looking blond girl sitting in a deep chair before a small fire.

“My Lady!” Duo crowed, leaping into the room and going to kiss her on the cheek.

“Oi! you reek!” she grimaced, pushing him away. “Have you done nothing but roll around in the grass with that consort of yours since you left?”

Duo grinned at her. “And what better way to spend a beautiful night than in the company of one so fair as my sweet sunbeam?” he smiled, flopping down on a nearby couch and popping the grapes he had stolen from her tray into his mouth.

“And where is your sunbeam now?” she asked, giving Hiiro an appraising look.

“Shining on the east,” the braided boy quipped but if the girl understood the statement she didn’t let on.

Instead she started in on him about his duties and how he had to learn to compromise if they were ever going to come to an agreement with their neighbors. He had shot down her every word with some flippant remark or twist of her words until she was red faced with frustration and ready to strangle him with her bare hands. Hiiro had to fight to keep the grin from his face. It was most entertaining.

Two hours had passed before she finally gave up and conceded her defeat for the day. “Fine,” she sighed heavily. “But you won’t be so cocky when there’s an army at our gates and Lord Barton has put his seal on a declaration of war.”

“War in inevitable,” Duo replied as if it meant nothing more than a mild irritation. “They don’t need my help to see to that. The people won’t accept his tyranny for much longer.”

“These things take time…” she began but the prince was loosing his patience now as well and stood.

“How long do you think the people will wait?” he challenged. “It is not I who will start this war, My Lady. I will, however, see it to its just end.” It was the first time all day Hiiro had seen anything in prince’s manner that held a serious thread as he bowed to the suddenly silent girl and they took their leave.

It was late afternoon by then and even Hiiro’s mind was lingering on the fresh scents of the baths as they passed by. He was delighted when the prince made a detour in that direction. The baths in this place were far superior to those of the Nobara palace. Hiiro suspected they were connected to natural hot springs that probably ran under the castle as they remained clear as they bathed instead of clouding up from the soaps and lather. They were also very warm and relaxing as the steam rose into the room colored by the rays of sun that shown through the colorful stained glass lining the upper walls.

Hiiro lay back in the warm water, letting the thick air and sweet scents sooth his travel weary mind until the sleek image of Duo standing waist deep in the pool as he slowly threaded long fingers through is quickly unraveling hair drew his attention. The long, chestnut tendrils captivated him as the prince pulled it loose one fold at a time and let it spread out in the water. It flowed like spun silk just under the surface, wrapping around his slender body as he moved about. The chestnut waves seemed to reach out to Hiiro as he watched them shimmering in the crystal depths and he reached out and let the silken strands wrap around his wrist. It seemed to pull him in and he soon found himself lathering the mass as the prince groaned softly and leaned back against his chest.

He sank beneath the surface pulling the prince with him into the warm water, letting it rinse away the thick lather leaving the long tendrils clean and scented with lavender and balm when they resurfaced. His breath came deep as the heady scent invaded his nostrils, his hands moving to slowly slide down the hard planes of Duo’s chest and stomach. His skin tasted clean where he kissed his neck and shoulder, the surrender in the longhaired boy’s body as he turned him and kissed him took his breath away. He had never wanted anything so much in his life than to be one with the man in his arms as he backed him up to the stairs that led down into the bath and laid him back until his head rested in the shallow water on the top step, kissing him all the while as the prince wrapped his legs around his waist. He took him slowly, letting every sensation wash over them until he had memorized every little sound, every touch and breath, every gleaming emotion in the boy’s hypnotic, violet eyes as he surrendered to the obsessive need that had over taken his body and soul. It was all just so beautiful, none more so than the boy sharing the wondrous dream and he felt a little more of himself slip away when they found nirvana together.

He was watching as the prince braided his long hair while sitting on a bench in the bath chamber when he realized he had lost much more than his freedom to him that day. His heart was somehow connected to him now and he knew no matter what happened in the future he would never be a free man again. He was his prisoner for life with or without the choker. The thought made him oddly sad and happy at the same time. The prince favored him with a smile then they dressed and headed off toward the armory for Hiiro’s fitting.

He had been allowed to choose whatever he liked from the stores of weapons and armor. There had been a remarkable sword with a gilded hilt that suited him well as well as a small, pocket sized cross bow that he had taken a liking to. The lightweight mail shirt was all that he cared for in the armor but he did claim a heavier pair of boots in place of the leather shoes he had originally been given. He felt like a real person when it was all over with. It felt good to regain his dignity. It had felt even better when Duo had beamed at him, his pride showing wantonly on his beautiful face. Hiiro had kissed him then just because.

Duo had taken him to a tavern in the village that sprawled out to the east of the castle. It turned out to be more of a town once he had gotten a good look at it. It even had cobblestone streets and an underground sewer system. This was commonplace in his own country but it was the first time he had seen anything like it since he had been brought across the sea. The absence of the stench that usually radiated from side street drainage added to the fantastic quality of place. The fey beauty at his side only made it seem all the more surreal.

Several times they’d been accosted by groups of the prince’s admirers as they made their way through the streets. A small group of young men had approached them asking the prince when he might be able to join them on the hunt again and telling him of their latest kills. The one with the sandy brown hair had balked and gapped at Hiiro when he had forcibly removed the boy’s hand from the prince’s shoulder. Hiiro wasn’t really sure if he had done it because he thought it inappropriate or if he just wanted these people to know he didn’t like it. Either way none of them touched him like that again and he was consoled by the fact that Duo had grinned like a maniac.

It didn’t bother him so much when the girls fawned over the longhaired boy. For all his flirtatious ways there was simply no spark between them at all. Hiiro had found several of them appealing but none of them could compare to the prince. He knew no one ever would. Not even when he was old and grey and walking with a cane would anyone be more beautiful to him. He sighed and accepted his fate a little easier this time. There was no going back.

They’d stopped off in the blacksmith’s shop where the man had hugged the prince as if he were a long lost son and insisted he inspect his newest armor and swords. Duo seemed to prefer the short blades he kept concealed on his body to that of the long, cumbersome swords though. Still, he had purchased the finest pieces and told him to see that they were delivered to the armory in the castle.

Hiiro had been introduced not as the prince’s consort but as his guest. Howard, the smith, had noticed the sword on his belt and given him a history on its birth. It was one of the finest blades the man had ever made and had taken him over a year to forge. He had found the metal in a mine deep in the mountains. The people he had bought it from had called it gundanium and claimed he would never be able to work it but he had proven them wrong. He also discovered that Duo’s blades were made of the same material. Howard had informed them that it was the hardest substance known to man. Harder even than diamond. Hiiro was impressed when he proved it by slicing his heavy anvil in half with his sword.

Duo had insisted the man close up shop and join them at the tavern and he happily agreed. Hiiro hadn’t seen the bracelet with the amethyst in it until the man had taken off the leather wristbands he wore when he was working. He wondered why the prince had his subjects wear the mark when he seemed to treat them all as if they were free men. It seemed like a slap in the face when he thought about it. Was it just a reminder that they weren’t truly free men after all?
