"Pawn Shop "

Ch 4

“Duo?” I called having walked in and not seen him readily available. It was still early enough for the shop to be open and everything looked all right but the hairs on my arms stood straight up on end when he didn’t answer. “Duo!?” I shouted rushing straight up the stairs where I burst into my apartment to find him tied to a chair buck naked while Zechs stood in front of him with a whip in his hand and utter shock in his eyes.

“AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGG!” I roared as my vision went red and the next coherent memory I had was of Duo shouting desperately for me to stop.

When my mind checked back in I was looking down at Zechs bloody face but one look at Duo tied to that chair wiped all sympathy from my mind and I raised my fist to pummel him again.

“Stop!” Duo rasped in a voice strained from screaming. “Please,” he rasped while I turned to glare at him. “If you kill him they’ll take you away too,” he sobbed and I understood where he was coming from and went to release him.

“Did he touch you?” I asked in barely contained fury.

“No,” he choked covering his nudity the moment his hands were free. “You came home before he could do anything.”

“If he ever comes near you again I’ll kill the bastard,” I growled starting when he suddenly gripped my face.

“No, please,” he breathed then wrapped me up so tight I could hardly breathe while he confessed, “I couldn’t stand it if I lost you too.”

“Duo?”

“She was everything to me,” he sobbed holding me tight but the thought of some past lover tainted my heart. “She was the only one who cared,” he explained. “But then she died and all I had left was this cross,” he chuckled wetly pulling it from his shirt but all I could do was glare at it because I didn’t want to share his heart. “It’s all that’s kept me going the past few years.”

Years? He was only seventeen. “Who was she?” I wondered because if it was years ago it couldn’t have been a lover. Not unless he was sexually active as the age of twelve.

“She was a nun that worked at the orphanage,” he explained then eeped when I pulled him tight and let the relief flow through me.

“Stay with me, Duo,” I begged kissing him deeply. “Please, I know we still have a lot to learn about each other but…”

“Hiiro,” he soothed laughing lightly which helped calm my desperation. “We need to deal with this first,” he reminded me indicating the broken and bleeding asshole on the floor.

“I’ll call the police,” I agreed but stopped when he suddenly froze.

“Couldn’t we just dump him in his apartment?” he asked knowing I wouldn’t agree before he asked. “Sorry,” he sighed. “It’s just…he’s sort of important to a friend of mine.”

“Who?” I asked wanting to know the whole story for a change.

“An instructor of mine,” he explained. “Treize Kushranada. He’s on the board at my university and he’s head over heals in love with that,” he grumbled indicating Zechs. “I keep telling him he’s not worth it but he can’t seem to give him up.”

“Love is a strong adversary,” I commented feeling my face flame when he cocked his head and smiled. “All right,” I agreed. “But we have to tell someone.”

He was skeptical when I told him about Chang Wufei but I wanted to know what was going on so I called him and was pleased when he not only agreed to keep it low key but came to see to the matter himself.

“Geez,” he grumbled when he walked in and saw Zechs piled up on the couch. Duo had cleaned him up a little but I’d put a hurting on him when I lost it so he still sort of resembled a pro boxer after a bad fight. “What did you do this time?” Wufei sighed making Duo and I glance at each other.

“You know him?” I asked cautiously easing Duo closer to my side.

“Regretfully,” he sighed sitting beside him. “He’s the reason I was watching Duo.”

“Me?” Duo gasped.

“Treize was worried he might step over the line,” Wufei explained grimacing when he lifted Zechs head and looked at his battered face.

“If he tries anything else it’ll be the last mistake he ever makes,” I warned ignoring Duo’s astonished gaze.

“Damn it,” Wufei sighed letting the threat ease into the past. “When are you going to learn you can’t play with people!” he growled smacking him upside the head firmly but it wasn’t enough to wake him up. “I’m sorry about this,” he told Duo hefting the large man onto his shoulder. “But you shouldn’t have anything to worry about anymore. He’s as vane as he is stupid,” he explained moving toward the door. “When he gets a look at his face he’ll hide in the closet until it heals.”

“Hey, Wufei,” Duo called before the door shut and I was surprised when he smiled and offered a heartfelt, “Thanks.”

Wufei returned the smile then hefted his burden down the hall and out of our lives. When I turned my attention to Duo he was looking pretty shaken up so I sat him down and set about making us some tea. His silence unsettled me so when he finally did speak I almost jumped right out of my skin.

“Sorry,” I chuckled hoping I hadn’t scared him. I’d completely lost it when I attacked Zechs and wasn’t sure how he would react to seeing such a brutal side of me but his next words were an apology of his own.

“I’m the one who’s sorry,” he sighed staring into his tea. “I’ve been nothing but trouble since the day we met.”

“Nooo,” I soothed nipping that in the bud. “None of this was your fault,” I consoled. “It was just bad timing but it’s over now. Wufei will keep his word so we shouldn’t have anymore trouble from him.”

“That’s only the half of it,” he snorted. “All I wanted was to protect my cross and all this had to happen.”

“Protect it?”

“Yes,” he nodded sadly. “When Zechs realized it was important to me he tried to use it to get me in bed. He even tried to steal it one night right out from around my neck so I thought I’d hock it somewhere so he couldn’t get a hold of it. I thought it worked when you took it in but…” he confessed turning those incredible eyes on me, “He found out about it and took the money so I couldn’t pay you back.”

“I shouldn’t have taken advantage of you like that,” I admitted. “It’s just you’re so…”

He smiled that crooked smile that tells me he’s figured me out and I understood there was no reason to explain. He already knew I was hopelessly lost. “Lets go to bed,” he sighed leaning back to stretch that beautiful body out and I dove for the couch.

“H…Hiiro?!” he gasped several hours later but I’d lost my mind.

I couldn’t get enough of him, he was just so beautiful, so willing and so fucking hot I couldn’t stop myself from stoking the heat time and again. He was tough which was good because I’d nailed him hard and worked us into a thick lather more than once but he was starting to show signs of fatigue so I pushed him back, spread him wide and slammed him so hard his eyes rolled back in his head. When he released I fell right along with him and collapsed in a heap on top of his sweat drenched body where I held him so tight his trembling shook me inside and out.

“Gods,” he rasped after a time but I wasn’t ready to release him and held on tight.

He lay beneath me until we cooled off a little and I was forced to retreat from the sweat heat of his body before his arms came around me and he held me gently. I wanted to beg him to stay but he’d only just managed to find a path that would help him achieve his dreams. All I could do was hold on and hope that when he moved he’d be willing to share his new life with me in the city.

Life was like a dream for awhile. We spent our days either in class though his university was local and mine was mostly virtual or working at the store. I had regular meetings with WEI and he disappeared from time to time presumably to work on his new career but I didn’t have the nerve to ask. I was already taking so much from him I didn’t want him to think I was trying to run his life. I wanted him with me because it’s where he wanted to be not because he was grateful for a place to stay or felt some obligation because I’d helped him with Zechs.

We made love a lot though I knew my reasons for pushing him so hard were selfish in the extreme. I was so scared he’d decide he needed to walk on his own I couldn’t stop myself from soaking him up whenever given the chance. He also solved my problems with the shop by suggesting a classmate of his for the job. She was young and smart though I was skeptical about her working in a pawn shop since we get some unsavory characters in there from time to time but she came with her own bodyguard in the form a large boyfriend that was attached to her every move so it worked out all right. She needed the money and I needed the freedom. Once J returned he could replace her since she would be moving on anyway.

A month had passed before we knew it and I knew when I saw his book bag sitting by the door there was no way I was ever going to be able to give him up. He had become an intricate part of my life so I bucked up and resolved to ask him to stay with me but when I looked for him he wasn’t in. The only time he left without his pack was when he was in the city which meant he’d be gone most of the day. Our schedules didn’t always allow me to give him a lift to more than his class a couple of times a week so he often took public transit which takes forever. I was anxious to speak with him on the matter of sharing a space in the city but it would have to wait until we were both home so I packed my bag and headed to WEI for my meeting.

“Hiiro,” Quatre greeted coming to grip my hand before his brow creased and he asked, “What is it?”

“Nothing,” I smiled though he eyed me knowingly.

“Have you made arrangements to take an apartment here?” he asked the same question he asked every time I came but I wasn’t ready to give up my life with Duo yet.

“No,” I sighed regretfully. “I still have some issues to deal with,” I explained.

“Is there anything I can do?” he asked adding hastily, “I don’t mean to pressure you but it’s inconvenient to work this way.”

“I know,” I nodded. “But this is something I’ll have to work out on my own.”

He sighed so heard his bangs flittered in the air then grumbled, “You two are going to drive me to distraction.”

“Two?” I laughed because he was damn cute when he sulked.

“Yes,” he replied gathering his folders and files before leading me toward the door. “Come on,” he breathed in exasperation.

I followed him down into the hanger we were using for the bulk of our experiments while he explained the newest angle the team had come up with. It was truly amazing what we had accomplished in the short time we’d been working together and I regretted having not met the entire crew more each time I saw the progress.

“What’s this?” I asked inspecting a new apparatus that was attached to a large, electro magnifier I’d been working on.

“Isn’t it clever?” Quatre enthused. “It’s a thermal blade,” he explained poking me right in the creative bone. “Look how he’s used the flow of electrons to control the energy. It’s quite powerful, we were going to test it on a larger scale today,” he told me chuckling while he backed away as I had all but climbed in the huge contraption to get a better look at how the circuitry was hardwired.

It was beautiful though I wasn’t sure how he intended to keep it from overheating until I saw the heat shield mechanism and assessed, “It’s brilliant.”

“Thanks.”

I hit my head hard when I came up out of the thing because I knew that voice and was utterly floored that I’d heard it there. “Duo?!”

“Hiiro!?” he gasped the moment my face was visible.

“You know each other?” Quatre asked but the look on his face was revealing how quickly he was working it out.

“This is your project?” he asked while my mouth spread in a wide grin.

“You’re the thermal specialist,” I chuckled.

“I should have known,” he smiled looking around at the many giant gizmos and machines. “But they’re so big I never put it together that they were the same as in the shop.”

“Not quite the same,” I observed jumping down to stand in front of him.

The energy flowing between us was hotter than anything in the entire bay and I knew as I gazed into his sparkling eyes everything was going to be just fine. We got an apartment together before the end of the week which made Quatre a very happy guy because we were able to work a regular schedule. Hilde and her boyfriend moved into my old apartment and agreed to watch the shop until my uncle returned which would be around the time she graduated so everything was working out great. Even Treize was working it out having taken Zechs in after his beating to enjoy some quality time together as Wufei was correct in the fact that the tall, bodacious blond refused to be seen in public until his face was properly healed and, in some small areas, reconstructed. It was a little unnerving to think I’d scarred him but when I thought about what he tried to do to Duo I felt it was justified. It was so odd how everything had worked out and I couldn’t help pulling Duo a little tighter against me when I thought it through.

“What?” he mumbled as he was on the edge of falling back to sleep after a particularly energetic romp.

“Maybe it is enchanted,” I chuckled nuzzling his hair.

“What?” he giggled rolling over to peer at me.

“Your cross,” I smiled lifting it from his smooth chest to gaze at it. “If it wasn’t for this I might never have found you.”

His lips curled on one side while he rolled on over and hugged me then confessed, “It took me over a month to work up the nerve to walk in that shop.” He laughed at me when I pushed him back and gaped at him but elaborated, “I used to watch you through the window.” His hand came up to touch my face reverently while he rearranged my mind and I soaked it in like the life force it was. “When Zechs tried to steal my cross it gave me an excuse to talk to you.”

“You were after me the entire time,” I accused feeling drunk over the fact.

“And you were enamored the moment you saw me,” he countered arrogantly shoving the pillow in my face but I grabbed him and rolled him over on top of me anyway.

“Absolutely,” I grinned feeling the enormous happiness that he so easily instilled in me bubble up in my eyes.

“Totally,” he smiled leaning close to my lips.

“Utterly,” I added loosing some of the playful air while his breath mingled with mine and we breathed in unison…

“Enraptured.”

So I took him back to that place where he grants me everything that he is for awhile and reveled in the perfection of his being. He had become the center of my universe and I knew as I rocked him gently into the night I would never, ever let him go.
