“Mr. Maxwell?!”

knock knock*knock*knock knock*knock*knock

“Mr. Maxwell!?”

“What the hell?” Hiiro groaned, rolling over to look at the clock blearily. Why in the hell was Mrs. Carlin, their new landlady, banging on their door at three a.m.?

“Coming, Mrs. Carlin,” Duo groused, pulling on a robe as he went to open the door. His irritation shifted to sudden shock right along with Hiiro’s who was mimicking his actions right behind him when they saw the two policemen that accompanied the middle aged woman.

“What’s wrong?”

“Duo Maxwell?” the taller of the imposing looking officers inquired of the longhaired boy who neglected to actually respond in any way before he went on. “We’d like to you come with us”.

“Why?” Hiiro asked, stepping protectively to his lover’s side.

“A friend of yours has been injured,” the man told them. Hiiro could feel Duo’s body tense. “Yours was the only name he would give us.”

“Who?!” Hiiro snapped, impatient with the man’s inadequate information.

“A Mr. ...Wufei Chang,” the man read from his little book but Duo was already out the door before he finished the sentence with Hiiro hot on his heels.

When they reached the hospital still in their robes and slippers they found the Chinese boy had been beaten rather brutally. Oddly enough his face was undamaged, however he had suffered broken ribs and an array of busies and abrasions that made it look like someone had dragged him behind a truck for awhile. He was sleeping when they entered the room. There was nothing but the soft sound of his breathing and the oddly timed little beeps and flashes from the monitors beside his bed. They’d given him several bags of what looked like saline and pain killers in his IV’s and kept his lights low. Hiiro could feel the trembling in Duo’s body as he approached the bedside.

“Fei?” the braided boy said softly, laying his hand on top of his friend’s. Wufei took a deep breath that made his eyes scrunch up in pain before cracking them open.

“Hey,” he smiled weakly, but it was a smile just the same.

“What happened?” Duo asked, sitting beside him. Wufei’s eyes drifted to Hiiro and offered a weak sort of apologetic grin to him, as well.

“Fucked up,” he shrugged, wincing with the movement.

“Who did this?” Duo asked. Hiiro had to wonder at the tone of his voice. It wasn’t just anger; it was more like pure hatred.

“Doesn’t matter,” Wufei replied. “Was my fault.”

“Bullshit,” the longhaired boy retorted.

“Don’t,” Wufei said firmly, closing his eyes again. “Can ya let go of that? I think the fingers are sprained,” he added before Duo could argue further. Duo released his hand and laid his arm on his stomach but a quick intake of air told him that was a sore spot as well. An attempt to lay his tired head on his arm brought the same results.

“Damn it!” the longhaired boy snapped in irritation. “Is there anywhere I can touch?!” he growled, hating the fact that his friend was so sore. Wufei only grinned and licked his lips. Duo offered Hiiro a quick glance before granting the raven haired boy’s request and kissing him gently. It wasn’t passionate or deep or anything like the lovers kisses they used to share but the love was clearly there and Wufei looked ten times lighter when he pulled away. Hiiro was surprised to hear him choke out an apology to their raven haired friend as he laid his forehead on his chin.

“I’m so sorry,” Duo ground out almost too softly for Hiiro to hear. The oddest thing about this strange occurrence was that Wufei only kissed his head and told him it was alright which indicated that Duo was, in fact, responsible for his condition in some way.

“Go home and get some sleep,” Wufei told him after a long moment. Duo’s need to sniffle proved how upset he was but when he looked up his eyes were dry.

“I want to talk to the nurse first,” he said standing. “I’ll be right back,” he assured him before leaving the two alone. Hiiro just stood there looking at him for a while, his dark blue eyes as incomprehensible as the morning sky, until Wufei just couldn’t take it anymore.

“Take him home and put him to bed,” he said without opening his eyes.

“It’s been awhile hasn’t it?” Hiiro asked knowing he would understand what he meant without further elaboration.

“Doesn’t matter,” Wufei replied but his tone snitched on him and told Hiiro he was lying through his teeth.

He knew that if he had to live without Duo it would be the hardest thing he’d ever had to endure. He and Wufei may not have been head over heels in love, but they had had an intimate relationship for a long time. He had to be missing him. He looked at him until he knew it was past the point of making him uncomfortable even though his eyes were closed. He could see why Duo had taken him for a lover. He was quite beautiful in his own right. Golden skin and fine lashes rimming black diamond eyes. A strong but surprisingly elegant form he’d never really taken the time to look at this closely before. And the hair. Black as pitch, heavy ebony silk that, on the few occasions he’d seen it down, framed his face gracefully. Well, there wouldn’t be a better time since he was incapacitated so he walked up, bent over and kissed him lightly on the mouth.

Wufei didn’t move, quite possibly, Hiiro reminded himself, because he was unable to but then he hadn’t turned his head either. Wufei’s eyes were open and looking at him when he pulled away. He didn’t seem angry but there was an obvious query in their black depths.

“I’m not gay you know?” he told him.

“You slept with Duo,” Hiiro reminded him, grinning for some stupid reason.

“He’s an exception,” Wufei replied.

“Just taking back what’s mine,” the Japanese boy reasoned.

Wufei grinned. “I’ve kissed him hundreds of times,” he reminded him.

Hiiro smiled. “So you have,” he agreed, leaning down to reclaim another. This one didn’t end up being quite so platonic however, as Wufei teased him into kissing him fully by licking his bottom lip gently. Hiiro was taken in by the delicacy of his kiss and soon found his hands wandering where they shouldn’t causing his partner to grunt uncomfortably.

“I’m not really submissive,” the raven haired boy chuckled wincing as he did so.

“You seem pretty submissive right now,” Hiiro grinned.

“Try that when I’m not busted up,” Wufei warned.

“Is that an invitation?” the Japanese boy teased but he withdrew while Wufei chuckled. “I’m going to go check on Duo,” Hiiro told him before leaving him to rest. He was headed for the nurse’s station when the sound of his lover’s voice drew his attention to the waiting room down the hall.

“…don’t care you piss wad!” Duo hissed in a heated, hateful tone that made Hiiro pause before opening the door. “I told you I’m out! No more!” There was a short pause before he growled in a way that clearly indicated he wanted to keep his voice down. “You said it was over! I don’t give a shit! Going after Fei was just fucking cowardly, man!” Hiiro realized suddenly as he listened to the one sided conversation that he knew incredibly little about his lover’s past. “I told you already,” Duo went on. “It’s too well guarded anyway! I can’t… you son of a bitch! If you ever come near Fei again… what?” Now his tone had changed, it was laced with fear and indecision. “Howard, I’m warning you…leave Hiiro out of this! You said it was over, god damn it!” Duo’s eyes went wide when Hiiro suddenly burst in and snatched the cell phone out of his hand.

“Who the hell’re you?” he snarled into the phone.

“Well now” an older man’s voice replied lazily. “Ain’t this a pickle,” he went on.

“Who are you?” Hiiro demanded again. “And what do you have to do with Duo?”

“Ain’t told ya nothing has he?” the man chuckled. “That’s our Duo,” he laughed. “Always did get a kick outta the dual identity thing.”

“What do you want from him… Howard.” Hiiro used his name. This seemed to sober him a bit.

“Just a little job for old time’s sake,” the man replied.

“What kind of job?”

“Haven’t you ever asked him anything but to bend over?” the man laughed. Hiiro would’ve slapped him if he could have. “Listen,” he went on after he got the chuckling under control. “Tell pretty boy over there to deliver the goods by next week. Otherwise we’ll have to visit you as incentive as well.”

“Why wait?” Hiiro asked evenly. Duo’s eyes turned up from the floor for the first time but Hiiro’s never faltered as he stood there shaking his head.

“Cocky lil bastard aintcha?” Howard chuckled. “No wonder Duo likes ya. Next week,” he said evenly before the phone went dead.

“Who is he?” Hiiro asked of his lover as he sank to the vinyl couch.

“My old boss,” Duo replied, looking very tired. Hiiro silently awaited more of an explanation. It came out in a pained voice full of remorse and shame as Duo softly informed his lover, “I’m a thief.”

Hiiro took him home before he asked him to explain. It was a good thing he had because Duo was prone to bouts of sobbing as he recounted his misspent youth, telling his lover how he’d been a street rat on L2 when he was a child. Through a series of unfortunate events he’d come to find himself a member of a group known in the underworld as the Sweepers. They were all thieves and bandits and it was only Duo’s uncanny abilities at his job that had kept him from being either used by the group for themselves or sold as a sex slave. Howard, their leader, had taken a personal interest in him when he was first found stowed away on their ship which was the only reason he’d been spared.

Duo had taken an interest in Gundam’s at the age of twelve when his talent for the game was discovered by Professor G, his current sponsor. It had been at that time that Howard had agreed to allow Duo to break away from the group but only under the stipulation that he perform certain services for them from time to time. Once the boy had come of age and began playing professionally the relationship was supposed to have been severed completely but Howard had pushed the deal asking for one more job several times since then. Duo had obliged the first couple of times out of gratitude for having been spared and offered a place among them but once he accepted Hiiro’s proposal he’d put his foot down and Wufei’s current condition was the result.

“What is it they want you to steal?” Hiiro asked tightening his arms around his shaken lover as they lay back in their bed.

“A gem,” Duo sighed.

“Is it worth a lot?” Hiiro asked, curious as to what would be worth Wufei’s health to these people.

“Doesn’t matter,” the longhaired boy told him. “They want it for a laser cannon. You wouldn’t be able to resell a gem that size anyway so it’d be useless for anything else.”

“What do they want with a laser cannon?”

“He invents things like that,” Duo sniffed reminding his lover just how hard it was for him to talk about all this. Hiiro felt bad about pushing him but he needed to know. “Sells them to the army and stuff,” the longhaired boy went on sounding very tired. “Hiiro?” he asked after a long moment.

“Hm?” he replied, stroking his long hair lazily as he let the tension of the day drain away.

“It was never who I wanted to be,” Duo told him, sounding a little frightened.

“I know,” Hiiro said softly, kissing his hair soothingly but his lover sat up anyway so he could look at him.

“Can you forgive me?” he asked, looking so small and fragile it was all Hiiro could do not to kiss him so he did.

“There’s nothing to forgive,” he told him when he pulled back. Duo looked up at him, the tears still sparkling in the corners of his eyes, then moved to reclaim his mouth quickly pushing him deeper under the blanket of heat that soon drowned them both. Hiiro had never been so frightened in his life when he woke the next morning to an empty bed.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
He spent the next two days looking for him. Trying to figure out which gem he might have been asked to steal and looking for any information he could find on the Sweepers but he was coming up frustratingly empty. He had little more to go on than when he started when he stepped into Wufei’s hospital room.
“You’re going home already?” Hiiro asked as the Chinese boy was sitting on the edge of the bed fully dressed and tossing his few personal items into a bag.
“No,” Wufei replied. “I’m going after him,” he told him flatly.
“You know where he is?” Why hadn’t it occurred to him? Wufei had to have some idea, he’d known Duo for years!
“No,” the raven hared boy said picking up his bag and standing carefully. He was clearly still in a lot of pain. “But I have an idea what they’re after,” he smiled.
**
There it was, the single biggest ruby in the history of man sitting right in front of him. It was huge even at a distance. The museum wouldn’t allow anyone to get closer than the ten foot roped border around the baseball sized gem. Christ, a ruby fragment could blow a hole in a car door. Hiiro didn’t want to think about what one that size could accomplish. Duo was really going to try to steal this thing?
He looked around again at the motion sensors, cameras, laser trips and even saw evidence of a heat shield around the perimeter that must have been turned off during the day so the patrons wouldn’t get scorched. How in the hell was Duo supposed to steal something so well guarded? He recalled the boy telling Howard over the phone that it was too well guarded but since he hadn’t returned in the last four days Hiiro could only assume he was going to try anyway. If he got caught however… it was a thought he wasn’t prepared to deal with.
“Everything’s taken care of,” Quatre smiled, stepping up to his side. “Do you really think this is a good idea though?” the blond worried for the millionth time.
Hiiro could only offer him a reassuring smile before he unlatched the rope barrier and walked over, lifting the glass case before slipping the giant ruby into his pocket. The museum’s curator hung back looking as if he might actually cry as the two boys left the building together without so much as an escort for protection. Duo only had two days left. He knew he’d come for the gem and one way or another he was going to put an end to all this.
He spent those two days in the penthouse suite of one of the finer hotels in the city but had still not seen any sign of his wayward lover. His concern that he might have returned to the Sweepers instead either for the sake of revenge or reasoning was worrying him more and more. His worst fears seemed confirmed when the phone rang late that evening.
“Hiiro.”
“Duo! Where are you?”
“You shouldn’t have interfered. They want the gem.”
“It’s here but I want to see you. Where are you?”
“Right behind you.”
Hiiro spun around to find his lover sitting on the balcony wall outside his room but it hardly even looked like Duo. He was clad all in black, a thin wisp of a shadow clinging to the railing as it fluttered in the breeze but the eyes were the same, Duo’s beautiful violet eyes. Hiiro dropped the phone and made straight for him but…
“Don’t,” Duo said evenly holding up one pale hand. His skin looked so frighteningly lucid against the ebony background of his strange attire but it was the odd tone in his voice that caused Hiiro to obey.
There was no light in his voice, no bells, no life. It was as thin as it was frightening. Upon a second look everything about the longhaired boy had somehow ...shifted until he was no longer the bright light that had so dominated Hiiro’s life for the past two years. He was dark, indistinct… decadent and Hiiro had never wanted him so badly in his entire life!
“The stone,” Duo said evenly, turning his palm upward expectantly.
Hiiro considered him for a long moment before going to the bar where he’d placed the gem on top of the rim of a small glass to retrieve it. Duo still sat with is palm up awaiting his prize when he turned back around and walked halfway back to him.
“Tell me why,” Hiiro said gently, cupping the huge gem in his hand temptingly.
Duo closed his hand before he spoke the simple truth. “He’ll hurt you.”
“So you think I’d rather see him hurt you?” the Japanese boy countered.
“Once it’s done he’ll leave us alone.”
“For how long?” Hiiro cut in and Duo fell silent. “I need you to trust me,” Hiiro told him offering him his hand. It took a moment before the longhaired boy stood and moved with an unnatural grace to his side. It was difficult not to suck in a breath of shock when he felt how cold his lover’s delicate hand was as he pulled him closer, closing the distance that had come between them. He was so thin, had he lost weight? Hiiro’s arms closed around him, his warmth flowing into his chill body, his heart hammering hard. He had never felt so aroused by him before. He smelled so damn good and he felt utterly sublime in his arms. His mind went completely blank the moment Duo claimed his kiss, the gem in his hand rolling to thud dully on the thick carpet completely forgotten as he lifted his lover and deposited him on the bed. The intensity between them that night went beyond desperation and when he awoke the next morning to find Duo cuddled snuggly under his arm he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt they had finally managed to become one. He wouldn’t leave him again.
“Mmm,” Duo groaned sleepily, snuggling up closer yet. Hiiro couldn’t help but chuckle. He was just so damn cute! “Hmm… what time is it?” the braided boy asked, cracking one bleary eye open.
“You can sleep for awhile,” his lover replied, kissing his forehead.
“But its daylight,” Duo argued but it was so warm and he felt so heavy that he couldn’t move.
“Don’t worry,” Hiiro soothed. “We’ve still got some time before we have to deal with Howard.”
That piqued Duo’s interest. “How do you expect us to deal with him on our own?” he asked, sounding more than a little skeptical about the situation. His heart just about exploded in his chest when heard Wufei’s voice over his shoulder.
“Who said you’re alone?”
“SHIT!” Duo barked, jumping half on top of Hiiro. “Where the hell’dyu come from?” he growled as the two of them burst into uncontrollable laugher.
“Nice to see you too,” the raven haired boy chuckled before stealing a small kiss. Duo flashed Hiiro an uncertain glance but since his lover was still chuckling happily he only said…
“Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” Wufei replied, pushing himself up on one elbow. Hiiro had laid his hands along Duo’s sides and was absently stroking his bare skin as they were both still very naked under the thin sheet. “Still sore but it’s healing nicely, see?” the raven hared boy told him pulling his tank top off to show him. Duo glanced warily at Hiiro again but he was only laying there with a strange little smirk on his face. Wufei’s body didn’t look all that much better but he was obviously moving around much easier so Duo sighed, relaxed and laid his head on Hiiro’s chest for a moment of peace. It didn’t last long though as Wufei suddenly leaned over and kissed him again, this time much slower and with an obviously evil intent.
“Don’t be disrespectful,” Duo scolded, pulling away but when he checked Hiiro still wore that stupid looking grin which only made him blush deeper.
“I think he misses you,” Hiiro said joining Wufei in the wild smirk club.
“You two are acting really weird,” Duo breathed, trying to make his escape but Hiiro suddenly bucked and he found himself pinned to the mattress with two decidedly evil grins staring down at him.
“You first,” Hiiro offered as Duo lay there wide eyed.
“Not at all,” Wufei smiled. “After you.”
“No, no,” Hiiro replied. “I’ve been with him all night, by all means,” he insisted.
“Yes... but we wouldn’t want to frighten him,” Wufei reasoned.
“Get the fuck off of me!” Duo growled and struggled but Hiiro refused to let him up, both of them still grinning at him like idiots as he lay there red in the face from anger as much as embarrassment.
“I don’t think he wants to kiss either of us now,” Hiiro mused.
“Looks like you’re right,” Wufei agreed, nodding solemnly.
Duo’s eyes went so wide they might have popped right out of his head when the two of them suddenly grinned and turned to kiss each other. The struggling stopped, all the blood drained from his face and he lay there slack jawed and buggy eyed as he watched. Hiiro had discovered in the past two days of sharing this room with the Chinese boy that he was just about the best kisser he’d ever met. His mind went back to their first night here as he let himself sink deeper into the other boy’s mouth, his fists closing a little tighter on Duo’s wrists as his mind recalled the heat that had built between them. It had begun as nothing more than a simple consolation between two friends that were upset and grieving but quickly escalated into something more.
Neither had been willing to allow things to go all the way, not without Duo’s presence and consent. They were both dominant on top of that so in the end things were a little too weird on their own but the attraction was definitely there, hot and heavy enough to keep them occupied for a good two hours before they finally gave into their desires and took matters in hand. It hadn’t been as satisfying as being with Duo, not by a long shot, and had left them both with an incurable desire to find out what it would be like if the nucleus of their need was also involved.
“He’s trembling,” Hiiro said softly as he released Wufei’s lips. Duo was indeed shaking like a leaf; even his lips were slightly humming as his mouth gently lay open as the two of them turned their attention back towards him.
“May I?” Wufei asked gently, smiling that soft smile he always reserved for Duo. The longhaired boy’s dancing violet eyes turned to Hiiro’s soothing dark blue to find them smiling down at him, reassuring him that it was alright then Wufei was before him, kissing him slowly in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time. It was different now though because Hiiro was watching, his hands gently releasing the longhaired boy’s wrists as Wufei smothered him in loving warmth. The moment the Chinese boy pulled away Hiiro replaced him, drawing a deep kiss from his lips. The familiar heat of his presence licking the flames Wufei had stirred to life inside him.
“Damn,” Duo breathed when he’d finally pulled away. Neither of them moved in again, letting him adjust to the idea slowly. Allowing him the time to determine if this was even something he wanted to consider. “You really want to go there?” Duo asked after a time.
“I know you miss him,” Hiiro replied bending to kiss his jaw. Duo’s eyes opened and connected with Wufei’s who was still smiling at him softly.
“Yeah,” he admitted, reaching out to touch his bare chest. The bruises were unsightly and brought him pain to think about but the skin was warm and soft and if he closed his eyes it was almost as if he were whole and unharmed.
“Well, is it alright if I like him too?” the Japanese boy asked, pulling back to look him in the eye.
“What about... I mean… we were going to be married,” Duo said.
“Don’t go getting the idea I want to pick out curtains or anything,” Wufei interjected, taking the hand on his chest in his own and kissing the long fingers. “But it might be nice to visit now and then,” he grinned, stretching out beside Duo.
“Have you two..?” Duo asked, his eyes narrowing suspiciously.
“We couldn’t manage it without you,” Hiiro answered quite bluntly honest.
“You cheated on me?”
“No,” the Japanese boy countered. “It appears I’m incapable of it.”
“We couldn’t go all the way,” Wufei confessed. “We both just wanted… you,” he told him, moving in to nibble on his neck a little.
“I really don’t know how I’m supposed to feel about that,” Duo sighed but he tilted his head to make room for him just the same.
“How do you feel about this?” Hiiro asked, smiling evilly as Duo suddenly gasped.
“Or this?” Wufei added as he sent a violent shiver down the boy’s spine.
“OK! okokok… D...damn.. Hiiro!”
“Wufei?”
“Hm?
“Have you ever done this?”
“UNNNGGG! H..HIIRO!”
“Nice,” the raven haired boy grinned, logging that one away for a later date before the two of them spent next few hours discovering the many different way’s of making Duo scream.
“I think he should be our best man,” Hiiro told his lover as they lay in the early afternoon together. The sheets were still damp and smelled of sex and Duo seemed incapable of anything more than a quiet whisper but there was a smile on his face and sigh in his heart and Hiiro had never been happier in his entire life. Wufei was no longer with them, having left to complete the next part of Hiiro’s plan to rid them of the Sweepers’ presence once and for all. Duo did manage a weak laugh before he replied.
“What about Quat and Trowa?”
“You think they’d be willing?” Hiiro grinned impishly.
“Not that! Gods you’re incorrigible,” Duo said, trying to slap him but he failed.
“Don’t you want Wufei to be up there with us?” Hiiro asked more seriously.
“Hmmm,” the longhaired boy sighed in agreement. “Do you really care for him that much?” he asked softly.
“He’s certainly got my attention,” Hiiro chuckled.
“He’s not really gay, you know?” Duo reflected.
Hiiro laughed again. “If he’s not gay after what I just did to him then he’s most certainly bi,” he chuckled, rolling over on top of Duo again.
“No… I mean... He probably wouldn’t want people to know,” his lover clarified.
“Hn... Doesn’t bother me either way,” Hiiro informed him, moving to taste his throat.
“Hiiro?”
“Hn?”
“I can’t.”
“I know.”
“But your ... I mean its getting...”
Hiiro grinned that evil little grin again. “Just relax.” he told him moving slowly down his chest. “I promise... it won’t hurt a bit.”
