"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 4

Over the next few months Hiiro learned very little about the longhaired enigma. Contact with the other pilots through press conferences and social gatherings proved that they were all, in some way, charmed by him but he was pleased to assess that none of them appeared to be his lovers. He looked forward to these times as well as the meets with great anticipation as it was the only time he would get to see him. They had fallen into almost a routine of meeting covertly after matches or in their hotels after meets. Whenever they could steal a moment together but in the end it was still just enough to satisfy their carnal needs and the more time passed, the more Hiiro realized he needed so much more than what he was getting. He couldn’t help but think that Duo felt the same. The fact that Wufei confirmed the absence of the boy from his own life over the past few months only seemed to confirm the idea that perhaps Duo wanted more from Hiiro as well. At least that’s what he thought until one day after a promotional party Hiiro happened upon the two boys in the lower level of the parking garage as they pulled themselves together. His heart just about burst out of his chest when he recognized them.

“Duo?” Oh, Gods, no, this was not happening. He was still buttoning his pants! The guilty smile on his face confirming what his mind refused to believe. Wufei was his usual composed self lending his strength to his compromised partner. “What the hell?” Hiiro breathed, unable to comprehend it all. “Why?” he asked, feeling his body begin to tremble inside.

Duo’s expression suddenly fell into pure amethyst rage as he snatched his coat from the hood of a car and snapped, “You don’t own me!” before he stalked off into the shadows. Hiiro couldn’t do anything but stand there in shock.

“Why?” he said again, trying to gather some logic to his side.

“Sorry,” Wufei offered, clapping him on the shoulder. “I never was any good at turning him down,” he sighed.

“He came to you?” Hiiro asked, clearly stunned and hurt by the idea.

Wufei nodded. “He was upset about something,” he told him. “I thought maybe I could get him to talk but...” he shrugged his shoulders helplessly.

Hiiro knew what it was like when Duo decided to turn on the charm and found he couldn’t hate the Chinese boy for what had happened. “Any idea where he might have gone?” he asked after a time.

“Who knows?” Wufei sighed. “I doubt he wants to see either of us right now anyway.”

Hiiro nodded but went in search of him anyway. He spent the rest of the night looking in the likely places, his hotel, the bars that were nearby, even the hanger where their Gundam’s were stored after the recent meet but he was no where to be found. Two day’s later he still hadn’t managed to so much as speak to him when he heard a knock on his hotel room door and bolted from the couch where he’d been dozing.

“Duo!” he barked as he slung the door open, his heart taking a nose dive when he stared into the slightly shocked face of Relena Darlian and his expression fell into depression at once.

“Well,” she exclaimed taking his fervor as exuberance over her visit as she beamed at him. “Hello, may I come in?” she asked as he was still just standing there looking a bit harried and disappointed. He moved away to admit her. “I just couldn’t wait any longer,” she gushed. “It’s all just so wonderful I just had to see you,” she said, throwing her arms around his neck which he immediately pried away and pushed her back.

“What are you talking about?” he sighed heavily, heading for the bar and the mostly empty bottle of brandy he’d left there last night.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t seen it!” she said excitedly, pulling a magazine out of her pocketbook. “I was terribly embarrassed at first of course but then it was going to come out sooner or later anyway,” she grinned hugely as she held up the book and Hiiro’s universe cracked.

Headline: Relena Darlian to Marry Super Stud Mobile Suit Pilot Hiiro Yui!

No. Ohhhh no. “When was this printed?” he asked snatching the book out of her hands.

“L…last weekend,” she stammered, alarmed by his reaction. The article read as though the marriage had been planned for some time and the reporter was just too clever for them to keep it a secret but there were several passages that related to an interview given by the blonde girl herself.

“Shit,” he breathed. Duo must’ve seen this! Any tolerance he may have had left for the girl’s fanciful dreams of them getting together bled right out his ears in that one instant as he turned hardened, steel eyes upon her and asked. “And just exactly where did they get the idea that you and I were to be wed?”

“Well,” she blushed, waving away his animosity stupidly. “I supposed I may have let it slip that...”

“WE’RE NOT GETTING MARRIED!” he bellowed, the brutal force of his shout knocking the wide eyed girl back onto the couch as he brandished the magazine shaking it about so hard it began to tear into little pieces. “I don’t love you! I’ve never loved you!” he shouted in his frustration.

“But,” she began as her eyes filled with tears but he just couldn’t feel any pity for her.

“Damn it, you stupid girl!” he ranted, tossing the mangled magazine in a chair. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?!” he snapped, rounding on her again. She just stared up at him with wide frightened blue eyes. “Damn it,” he sighed suddenly, running his fingers through is hair in his agitation. “I’ve got to talk to him.”

“Who are you talking about?!” the girl suddenly shrieked. “W... why are you so... angry?” she sobbed suddenly. “I don’t understand. W... we… we were always meant to…”

“I’m gay, you stupid prat!” he barked, silencing her as her eyes went round with horror. “I’ve been having a homosexual love affair with a boy for the past two years!” he told her bluntly. “Get it? I ... don’t… love ... you,” he said as clearly as he could put it for her.

“Don’t be absurd...” she began but his expression stalled her words. He didn’t have time for this anyway. He had to find Duo and explain but as always, when the boy wanted to disappear he would not be found.

The good part was that Relena had completely disappeared from his life altogether. He wasn’t even receiving the weekly phone calls anymore. The bad, he still couldn’t find a way to explain things to Duo. His only hope was their next meet which finally came on a blustery day in the northern hemisphere that was going to prove for a most unpleasant competition. The ground was frozen and slippery, the air filed with flurries that coated sensors and camera’s alike with sleet and made it impossible for a live audience to come and witness the event. Therefore, the stands were empty in favor of watching from safe, warm bunkers beneath the stadium. Hiiro didn’t care, he could only think of one thing. Get it over with quickly so he would have a chance to speak to Duo. This need gave him a ruthless edge over his opponents and gained him the cup in short order. Even Duo had fallen helplessly to Wing Zero. Hiiro had been out of his suit and on his way to where Duo was dismounting before the boy’s feet could hit the ground.

“Duo!”

“Nice match,” the braided boy smiled through the falling snow. His cheeks were pinked and his eyes bright beneath the warm woolen cap covering his beautiful chestnut hair. Hiiro had to swallow before he could go on.

“Relena’s not my girlfriend,” he told him straight up, causing him to start. A moment later Duo’s mouth curved into an amused smile and he shook his head.

“Think you forgot to tell her about it,” he replied, wiping the chill from his nose cutely.

“I told her,” he assured him. “I told her I’m in love with you,” he shouted over the wind that wiped at his hair and stung his face. He wasn’t as well prepared for the outside encounter as Duo, having worn his usual tank top and shorts inside the cockpit. He barely felt the cold however; all that mattered was making Duo understand.

“That’s a bold statement, Mr. Yui,” Duo smiled, looking highly amused again.

“It’s the truth,” Hiiro stated clearly, stepping closer to him, his shoes crunching in the snow beneath his feet. “Believe me,” he said, still speaking loudly over the wind. “If I were to ever want to marry anyone it would be you.”

“Be careful what you say!” Duo yelled merrilyas the snow thickened in the swirling wind. “That almost sounded like a proposal!” he smiled.

Hm. Marry Duo? The thought had merit. There’d be no reason for him to run away anymore if they were married. “Maybe it is!” he shouted, feeling considerably light headed all of a sudden. Duo smiled and all of a sudden he’d never been more sure of anything in his life. “So?” he barked over the biting wind. “Are you going to marry me or what?”

“You’re serious?” Duo laughed playfully.

“Hell yes!” Hiiro replied and for the first time he managed to steady the reins on that swarm of butterflies in his stomach.

“You’re sure?” the longhaired boy chuckled as he rolled his eyes at the question.

“Definitely,” Hiiro declared, advancing on him and snatching him into a warm embrace as he kissed him deeply. Duo let him, melting into him so enticingly he was sincerely considering if two people would fit in the cockpit of a Gundam by the time they pulled apart but all thoughts of anything but soaring through the sky left his mind when Duo smiled up at him, his voice trembling and his eyes bright and deep as he said…

“Yes.”

What was that sound and why was the earth shaking? For a long moment he thought all the sayings about having an earth moving experience were actually, literally true until a young woman’s voice cut through the thick layer of fog around his brain.

“Umm Mr. Yui? Your Cup,”

It hit him as the thunderous sound grew louder and the quaking under his feet intensified as thousands of people poured out onto the field cheering for all they were worth that the entire scene had just been broadcast on several networks to every household on earth and in the space. He didn’t know how to feel about that development, it would cause more talk than the first man on the moon but at the moment he just didn’t care. Duo was warm and there and he’d agreed to become Hiiro’s partner for life. Anything else could be worked out somehow. Whatever concerns he might have had about their chosen profession and how they were going to cope with being both rivals and lovers flew right out the window when Duo looked up at him and smiled.

“I win,” he chuckled, kissing his chin and Hiiro realized suddenly that he’d been played since the beginning. This had been Duo’s intention all along. To capture him, to hold him, to possess him in every way and now that he had him he couldn’t help but wonder that Duo’s win had somehow become his greatest victory.

**

The uproar in the media lasted a little longer than he expected, headlines of everything from ‘GUNDAM PILOTS DECLAIR UNDYING LOVE’ to ‘GAY SCANDLE ROCKS SPORTS WORLD’. Hiiro was particularly fond of the one in the Dawdy’s Rags that read `Winter or Autumn? A Guide to the Gundam Pilots wedding attire’. They’d actually allowed them a picture to go with that one.

Life hadn’t really changed all that much however, and once the media storm had died down they found themselves living pretty much in the same way they had up until the proposal. Hiiro had agreed whole heartedly that jumping into an apartment together while they were still on rival teams would be a mistake. It was clear to all involved that they needed to wait until after the season to explore their new life together. One thing that had changed was the time they got to spend together behind the scenes. It wasn’t uncommon for Duo to show up for the weekend though the weeks just before a meet he tended to disappear entirely. Hiiro could understand as he was spending all his time preparing for the matches as well.

Duo was more fierce than ever when they faced off together. Whether he wanted to prove his skill or just that they were honestly trying to win he wasn’t sure but it thrilled him either way. The only thing that compared to sex with Duo was a good, hard battle against him. Before they knew it the season was over and Hiiro had taken the championship. The win had been by a narrow margin, however. Duo hadn’t actually made it into the final bout as Quatre proved a formidable opponent one day when Deathscythe wasn’t really up to par. It had cost him in the points division and allowed the blond boy the leading edge. Fighting the Quatre for the cup had been almost as exciting as fighting Duo for the soap!

It was at the after party when they were all sitting around a table together for the first time. Each had spent time with the other on and off; even Wufei had taken to sparing with Trowa in Hiiro’s absence so they all had a history of some sort. It was just that this was the first time they’d all actually sat down together. Most of the night was spent reminiscing over the past season, slapping each others backs and prodding egos with both compliments and jibes until at last Quatre asked the one question that everyone had managed to avoid.

“So, when’s the wedding?”

“We hadn’t really decided,” Duo smiled, leaning into his lover’s side as he sipped his after dinner drink.

“How about tonight?” Hiiro whispered in his ear, chuckling as he choked slightly on the brown liquid.

“Spring is so beautiful,” Quatre sighed looking a little far away.

“It’s spring now,” Duo reminded him.

“So tonight’s good then?” Hiiro grinned, nuzzling his ear again.

“I may not be a woman,” the longhaired boy told him, thumping him on the nose, “but I think I’d like to have a proper wedding,” he said before accepting the small kiss Hiiro insisted on placing on his lips.

“Uhg,” Wufei grunted, rolling his eyes. “I need another drink. Anyone else?” He didn’t really wait for an answer before moving off, leaving the entire table delightfully amused by his uncomfortable exit.

“I think we should hire a coordinator,” Duo said.

“Really?” Hiiro replied stunned by the suggestion. He really hadn’t considered a big wedding. Nothing that would require a coordinator that’s for sure.

“Mm,” Duo sighed, snuggling up close again. Ok, if he wanted a big wedding… “Nothing fancy really,” the longhaired boy added, sipping his drink again as Hiiro’s stomach uncoiled. “But since most of our friends are scattered out all over the world don’t you think it would be easier?” he asked.

“I suppose,” the Japanese boy replied.

“Well,” Duo said sitting up “Lets see... How about late July?”

“We’ll be in Monte Carlo,” Quatre informed him. “But I suppose we could fly back…”

“And you’re committed to new research on Wing in June,” the braided boy reminded his lover. “I have some things to take care of with Deathscythe as well that will take me most of May.”

“You’ll be gone the whole month?” Hiiro asked slightly taken aback. He hadn’t been told.

“Don’t worry,” Duo smiled. “I’m not going to let your bed get cold,” he promised. “But you see what I mean? It’d be easier if we had someone else that could dedicate their time to figuring all this out for us.” He did have a point. “I can think of better ways to spend my time than going over schedules and calling florists,” he grinned evilly. Hiiro returned it ten fold and pulled him in for another kiss.

“Hmmmmmm,” Quatre sighed looking starry eyed again as he leaned on his elbows and watched the love birds.

“Maybe you should make an honest man of him too,” Duo chuckled to the boy’s quiet, auburn haired partner but the taller boy’s face only lit up with a wicked grin when Quatre blushed. “Oh, you did not!” Duo gasped shocked at the idea that they had already been there but the grin and blush only grew more intense. “When?!” he asked, looking scandalized. “And why weren’t we invited!?”

“We didn’t know you then,” Quatre told him in a hushed tone.

“Christ! How long have you two been marri..ow!”

“Shhh!” the blond hushed him, retracting the leg he’d kicked him with as he glanced around. “I am not up to fending off the dogs,” he told him, indicating the table where they all knew at least two undercover reporters were planted.

“Sorry,” Duo sighed. It was so nice not to have to hide anything. He was really glad that his and Hiiro’s relationship was above board.

“Four years,” Trowa supplied the answer to the question.

“Four years!?” Duo hissed, his astonishment renewed. “You mean you were like… fourteen? When you …” but he broke off as he narrowly evaded another kick to the shin.

“Yes,” Quatre said in a very dignified tone.

“His father was trying to split us up,” Trowa informed them in an uncharacteristic moment of chatter. “So I stole him and forced him to marry me,” he smiled, stroking the back of the boy’s golden head.

“You did not steal me,” Quatre countered.

“Can you do that at fourteen?” Hiiro asked.

“It doesn’t matter if it was legal,” the taller boy supplied again. “We were joined in the eyes of God and that’s not something even his father could undo. They’re very religious you see.”

“So it’s not legal?” Duo asked.

“Oh, it is now,” Quatre smiled. “Father wouldn’t allow for anything less once he learned what we did,” he explained then went on. “But considering my family we decided to keep it very low profile.”

“That’s so romantic,” Duo smiled, snuggling up to Hiiro once again.

“It didn’t seem like it at the time,” Quatre smiled weakly, leaning back into Trowa’s hand.

“Do you live together?” Duo suddenly asked.

“Yes,” Quatre answered a little off set by the sudden change in stream.

“You think we should get a place together before the wedding?” he asked his lover.

“Tonight too soon?” Hiiro smiled pulling him close again. Duo just chuckled and let him. No one really noticed that Wufei never returned to the group.
