"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 3

Of course his calls were redirected when he tried to reach Duo. Whether he was refusing to speak with him or just not getting the messages he couldn’t say but the result was the same. He tried to visit the hotel where Duo and his team were staying as well but it wasn’t all that surprising that they pretty much tossed him out on his ear. He was the opposing team’s pilot after all.

The following week found him home once again and enduring the company of his childhood companion and every day human leech. Didn’t the girl have a damn life of her own? It wasn’t bad enough he had to cope with her over the summers but now she was coming to invade his home life as well? Thankfully her holiday was soon over and things settled a bit before the next competition took him on the road.

He couldn’t help but wonder about the longhaired beauty. He’d be there for sure but what would his mind set be? Would he speak to him if he approached him? Would they find themselves once again in each other’s arms? He found that he couldn’t help but hope that that would happen even if it meant more pain in the long run. His body hungered for him constantly as much as his mind longed to hear his voice and his soul yearned to know his dreams. He’d tried writing, calling, even visiting several more times over the two month break always with the same frustratingly brutal results. No word or response from Duo. It left him with a great deal of apprehension once he was on the field.

The match’s went well for him though he didn’t feel he was up to his own standards. Quatre managed to beat him once, putting him in the semifinals. Trowa almost won against Duo this time, just narrowly losing by a point’s margin. Wufei had been knocked out of the running early on by Duo which pitted Hiiro and Duo against each other in the final match which Duo won when Hiiro’s heart stopped beating for a split second as the great mecha’s hit the ground. His momentary weakness had cost him the win because Duo was not so fragile as to allow a simple fall to bring him down.

Relena had managed to talk Dr. J into allowing her to accompany them in the pilot’s box once the matches were over so he was forced to endure her dripping presence as he watched Duo accept the cup. Wufei was there as well, looking as smug as ever and Hiiro’s heart just about leapt out of his chest when the longhaired boy joined him when he exited the podium. Had the Chinese boy managed to convince him they should be lovers in the time they’d been apart? The thought both angered and depressed him but the anger took front stage. He wouldn’t stand for Duo being bullied into anything. Once again he shook Relena and went off in search of the two boys’ but this time it was harder to find them. When he did he instantly wished he hadn’t gone to look.

The sound of Duo’s voice this time was anything but resistant. As a matter of fact he seemed to be very much enjoying the fact that Wufei was passionately making love to him in the little storage room. First he wanted to kill Wufei, then he wanted to strangle Duo, then he just wanted to shrivel up and die all in the span of about three seconds. He lingered another minute or so watching through a crack in the door as the raven hared boy did all the things he had so longed to be doing to him all this time. He’d lost. For whatever the reason Duo preferred Wufei and he’d just have to learn to live with it. He left before any more of the passionate sights and sounds could be burned into his memory and this time he managed to get very… very… drunk.

He woke the next morning with a sock for a tongue, a hive of angry bees in his head and a naked redhead in his bed. Wait... no... it wasn’t his bed. Hell, it wasn’t even his hotel! He had no idea who the redhead was but from the way he felt she must have had a pretty good time. He did his best not to wake her as he unwrapped himself from around her naked body. Well, it was nice to know he had descent taste even when he was toe up plastered. She was quite lovely. He figured out fairly easily that she was for hire by the odd assortment of sexy clothes on the floor and left her a large tip for her time before dragging his aching ass out the door. He realized just how bad things were when he stepped out into the putrid sunlight that just made him wish for his beam cannon and a whole lot of water so he could douse the sun. Hell, he wasn’t even in the same god damn city!!

It took him half the morning, two trains and one hell of a long cab ride to get back to his hotel. He was sick, tired and his head felt like it was full of flesh eating beetles. His heart stopped as dead still as his feet when he saw Duo sitting in front of his hotel room door, his head on his knees staring at the floor through the circle of his arms. All he could feel was pain... and anger... and ... pain… He refused to look at him as he walked over and slipped his key into the lock but Duo’s lack of a greeting made him curious. His heart melted the moment he saw tears in the boy’s violet eyes.

“Duo?” he breathed, kneeling down beside him. “What’s wrong?” he asked, touching his shoulder supportively.

“I... ah gods… sorry,” Duo sniffed, wiping his eyes furiously. “Can I come in?” he asked, glancing up and down the empty hall.

“Yeah, come on,” Hiiro told him, helping him to his feet. What had happened? Why would he be crying? Had Wufei done something to him? He’d kill the bastard! “You want some water or something?” he asked careful to keep the anger from his tone as he guided Duo to the couch.

“Thanks,” the braided boy sniffed, wiping his nose on his sleeve.

Hiiro brought him the water and a box of tissue.

“Thanks,” Duo said again, laughing lightly at himself.

Hiiro waited for him to blow his nose and wipe his eyes and have a nice calming drink before he pressed the issue further.

“You ok?”

“Sorry,” Duo apologized again, unable to look at him. “I don’t know why I came here,” he confessed, looking very disgusted with himself.

“It’s alright,” Hiiro smiled, giving into the urge to brush his thick chestnut bangs from red rimmed, violet eyes. Gods, he was even more beautiful looking fragile and vulnerable. “I don’t mind,” he told him, feeling the now familiar swelling in both his chest and his pants that occurred whenever he was in the braided boy’s presence.

Duo smiled and somehow... nothing else mattered anymore. “You’re so kind,” he breathed softly, leaning his head into Hiiro’s shoulder, the place where it contacted burning suddenly with that same heat that always filled him whenever Duo touched him. He wanted to hold him, he wanted to make it all better, he wanted to make him feel good again, he wanted….

“Duo.”

“Hmm?”

Ahhh, damn, this was so not fair! Why was he being so sweet? Why did he smell so damn good? Why was he melting into Hiiro’s arms when he had been with Wufei the day before? He wanted to ask that last question, it ran through his mind several times as Duo’s face tilted up but he couldn’t make the words form on his tongue before the braided boy sucked his ability to reason at all right out of his mouth. The next thing he knew he was flat on his back with a very determined young man on top of him and all he cared about was making damn sure he screamed himself hoarse. He didn’t remember Wufei again until the storm had once again passed and he lay with a very naked, very sated, very exhausted longhaired boy on his chest. If life could just always be like this he’d be the happiest man alive. However…

“Go to sleep,” Duo sighed.

“No,” Hiiro replied, holding him tighter but Duo only chuckled. He didn’t really see how it was funny. “You’ll disappear again if I fall asleep, won’t you?” he asked softly, his tone betraying the seriousness of his heart.

“I have to go either way,” the longhaired boy sighed, letting him pull him closer.

“Are you going back to him?” Hiiro asked in spite of the pain the question caused.

“Hm?” Duo grunted, pushing back to look at him curiously. “Who?”

“Wufei.”

“What about him?”

Was he going to deny it? “Aren’t you his lover now?”

Duo laughed out loud and lay back down on his chest. “What gave you that idea?” he asked, relaxing back into him as Hiiro’s arms automatically slipped back around his body.

“I saw you,” Hiiro confessed, causing him to sit back up and look at him suspiciously. “Yesterday,” he explained.

“You little peeping tom,” Duo scolded but it was tempered by an amused grin as he leaned down and kissed him.

Well, he hadn’t denied it but... What kind of reaction was that?

“Duo?”

“We’re not lovers.”

“You have a very strange friendship then,” Hiiro countered. He hadn’t meant to sound judgmental but the thought of them together was starting to piss him off again.

“Actually,” Duo replied seeming just as comfortable as ever. “We do.”

Hm. “But you’re not in love with him?”

Duo laughed again, sending that warm feeling all through Hiiro’s body that made him wonder if that’s what it felt like when angels sing. “Yeah, I love him,” he told him. “We’ve been friends a long time but he’s not the one if that’s what your asking.”

“Duo.”

“Hiiro, please,” the braided boy breathed, hugging him tighter, the tale tell signs of his earlier depression showing in his tone as he pleaded. “Don’t … I can’t deal with this right now… I’m sorry…”

Hiiro paused a long moment to consider all that had been said and everything that had happened up till then before gently pushing him back and kissing him deeply. If he couldn’t hear the words he’d make damn sure he felt his heart, that’s what he thought as he rolled him over and proceeded to show him exactly how he felt about him. Once again they made love throughout the night. He even got to wash his hair this time like he’d dreamed about so often. It was a lot... clingier than he’d fantasized however, and he found himself desperately tangled in it as he and Duo both laughed their ass. An hour and a bottle of cream rinse later they were sitting on the bed while he brushed the long tresses out for his part time lover. Gods, he looked just like an angel with it down. Not male or female but something sublime, divine even. It almost seemed like a sin to desecrate the purity of his beauty... almost.

When he woke the next day he found himself once again alone. It didn’t hurt as much this time though. Either he was getting used to it or he just didn’t believe this would be the last time he’d see the longhaired beauty. He was shocked to hell and back and tickled to death when he opened the door to leave and found him on his door step with a bag of doughnuts and two cups of hot coffee.

“You take sugar?” Duo asked and Hiiro laughed out loud. Now he blushed?!

“Thanks,” he chuckled, opening the door wide to admit him.

“I didn’t know what you’d like so I got what I like,” Duo smiled, unpacking the raspberry and lemon filled confections. Hiiro couldn’t help but wonder what had prompted the depression that had brought him to his door the day before but he couldn’t bring himself to ask. It was much too nice seeing him smiling and actually hanging around for a change. He chose to nibble on the back of his neck instead of the doughnuts however.

“Perv,” Duo chuckled, offering him a bite of his raspberry filled.

“Hmmm,” Hiiro hummed, licking half the filling out in one swipe.

“Hey!” Duo groused, pulling his defiled breakfast away protectively.

There was little reason to worry however, as Hiiro returned the sweet filling with a kiss and Duo lapped up the tangy affection long after the shared filling had been consumed. It took quite a bit of will power to force himself to stop before the rest of their breakfast became a means of erotic satisfaction but Hiiro desperately wanted to spend some time with his braided enigma.

“Will you stay for a while?” he asked holding him firmly but loosely around the waist from behind, his head resting on his shoulder as he breathed in the sweet scent of his hair.

“What did you have in mind?”

In mind? Anything! Everything! Ummmmm, “Pirates Cove?”

“Arr, me hardy,” Duo replied in an awful pirates drawl as he pulled away and brandished his deadly first finger at the Japanese boy. “Me thinks ye have a taste for bold adventure at sea!” he teased, poking him in the ribs but the act cost him the game as Hiiro laughed and snatched him into a full embrace. Once the long kiss was over Duo suddenly grinned and goosed him gaining his escape. “Last one to the elevator goes down!” he yipped, running for the door.

Down? Goes… down? “Shit!” Hiiro gasped heading after him full steam.

He lost but the price was well worth it. They spent the day at the small amusement park `Pirates Cove`. It was really the first time Hiiro had ever been to a place like that. It really wasn’t something that was fun by yourself and he’d never met anyone that had made him think of it before but Duo, he was just so full of life and laugher it seemed like the only natural thing to do. Besides, he had one hell of a sexual high buzzing around inside him and the exercise would do him good.

Duo proved once again that life in his company was anything but boring. They truly had the time of their lives that day and when it came time for the park to close they stopped off and got seafood for dinner. Hiiro insisted on paying then drove them back to his hotel where he suddenly realized as he shut off the car that their day together was over. What would happen now? Suddenly, he just didn’t want to get out of the car.

“Aren’t you going to invite me up?” Duo asked but he wasn’t looking at him when he did. Did he actually think he’d turn him away?

“Would you come if I did?”

Duo’s head turned around slowly, his eyes were so soft and inviting he found himself lost in them the moment their gazes met. “Yes,” the violet eyed boy replied gently, slipping his hand into Hiiro’s.

“And what if I wanted more than that?” Hiiro asked as he squeezed the delicate fingers in his hand.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Dou sighed, returning the grasp.

“Too late,” the Japanese boy grinned and the gentle truth earned him a small chuckle.

“Life is very… complicated right now,” the braided boy told him, the pain of it showing on his brow. Hiiro wanted so badly to demand to know what it was, to somehow find a way to fix it for him but he knew he’d be overstepping the line at this point if he did. “I just want to be with you for a while,” he told him, his words bringing a joy unparalleled to Hiiro’s heart. He couldn’t resist leaning over and kissing him warmly.

“You want to come up?” he asked when he pulled away.

Duo nodded, apparently unable to form the word. Hiiro rocked him slowly that night taking the time to really love every single aspect of him and when he awoke in the morning to find his bed once again occupied only by himself he felt a pain much deeper than anything he’d felt before. He’d known it was going to happen and he wasn’t angry with Duo for leaving but there was nothing he could do to help the boy he now found himself hopelessly in love with and that was something he just couldn’t endure. He consoled himself knowing that Duo could be trusted, if he really needed him he’d come but... it was very hard to make himself wait. Would he see him again before the next meet? Would Wufei be there to comfort him in the mean time? Or was he part of the problem? Hm.

That was something he hadn’t really thought about before. Chang Wufei. Just what was his part in all of this anyway? Maybe he couldn’t go beating on Duo’s door and pressuring him but he saw no reason whatsoever why he shouldn’t pay the Chinese boy a little visit. Yeah. Where was the harm in that? He didn’t return home that day, instead finding himself on a flight that would take him to Wufei’s doorstep. If he couldn’t see Duo directly, then he’d take a more unobtrusive course.

He stood in the garden of the Chang family home. It was common knowledge that he was to be the successor to the of the Dragon clan as they were known in China; and the extensive grounds that housed his family members reflected as much. It was a bit of a surprise just how authentic the buildings and shrines were inside the walls. He felt almost as if he’d actually stepped back onto Asian soil. Wufei appeared to be as formidable off the field as on as at the current moment he was doing a fine job of pummeling one of his brethren in a hand to hand sparing match. Hiiro stood by quietly and watched until the raven hared boy got a glimpse of him and ended the match quickly with a single deadly blow that not only shocked his opponent but sent him to the ground gasping for air. He ignored Hiiro while he helped the young man up and dismissed him then took his time to get a long drink from the nearby well before finally acknowledging his guest.

“Aren’t you in the wrong house?” he asked without looking at him.

“No,” Hiiro replied, unwilling to play his games. “I’ve come to ask what your intentions are,” he told him getting right to the meat of the matter. He saw no need to prolong this conversation in any way, especially since the sight of the Chinese boy brought back some very... enraging memories.

“I wouldn’t have thought it of you,” Wufei said, turning to face him as he leaned casually back against the well. “Lady Une perhaps but...” What was he talking about? “You’re probably the last person I’d have suspected of background coercion but rest assured,” he said with a dark gleam in his black eyes. “I am not so easily intimidated.”

Ah. He though he was trying to play mind games about the meet. “I wasn’t referring to the game.”

It took a moment before Wufei”s dark eyes suddenly lit up in comprehension and his lips spread into an evil smile. “You’ve lost to him,” he said, sounding highly amused.

Hiiro couldn’t deny it so he changed the stream of the conversation back again. “You’ve fallen under the way as well,” he told him, the complete absence of sympathy in his tone sobering the raven haired boy somewhat.

“Yes,” Wufei chuckled, looking as if he were relishing some fond memory that made Hiiro want to bitch slap him. “But I haven’t lost to him.”

“What are your intentions?” Hiiro asked a bit more sternly this time.

“To win of course,” Wufei smirked.

“At what price?!” the Japanese boy snapped, stepping forward with the memory of Duo’s tears still fresh in his mind. “There’s a limit to what honor will allow,” he told him firmly.

“I’ve told him that many times myself,” Wufei sighed, nodding his head. What? “But from what I see before me he’s still playing the game.” Hiiro just stood there working his words out. Was he accusing Duo of manipulating his opponents with sex? Wasn’t that exactly what Hiiro had come to accuse Wufei of? “But then,” the raven haired boy smirked again, “He’s very well armed isn’t he?” he asked already knowing Hiiro’s opinion of the braided boy’s particular assets.

“I don’t believe you,” No way. Duo wouldn’t do something like that. Would he?

“I wonder,” Wufei mused thoughtfully “Why was it ... exactly... that you lost the last meet to him?”

No. It wasn’t true. Yes, he’d lost because of his concern for Duo’s well being but… no. They’d spent time together since... they had fun... they made love... it wasn’t just sex… it wasn’t just a game.

“You tried to force him!” he growled, suddenly recalling the showers at the first meet.

“You really think he led me in there thinking I wouldn’t push him down?” Wufei grinned. His stance was loose but prepared, he obviously knew he was taunting his guest and as always, proved a clever and intelligent rival. Very clever. “Of course, after you showed up there wasn’t much reason for me to hang around and steal away a chance for him to leave his mark.”

“Shut up!”

The amusement drained from Wufei’s eyes to be replaced by something much more disturbing. Honest concern. “You shouldn’t have let your heart get involved,” he told him in what was really the first kind tone he’d heard him speak.

“He’s not sleeping around!” Hiiro insisted. “He wouldn’t do that!”

“I never said he was,” Wufei replied calmly. “Actually... to my knowledge you’re the first other than myself that he’s actually allowed into his bed,” he admitted. “Don’t get the wrong idea,” he smiled, relaxing a little again. “I’m very fond of Duo, I wouldn’t sleep with him otherwise.” The casual way that he spoke about it just turned Hiiro’s stomach. “But he’s managed to take me down more than once by playing these mind games. The first match for instance,” he told him. “He had driven me past the point of moderate control that day,” he chuckled fondly as he recalled. “Fair warning,” he said, smirking at his guest again. Hiiro found himself calming in spite of the situation. “It’s really very difficult to win a match with a raging hard on.” Ok, he had to smile at that one.

So maybe Wufei wasn’t the horror he’d thought him to be. He left his home feeling considerably relieved that Duo didn’t appear to be in any danger from him but even more confused about the boy himself. If it were true then had this all started as nothing more than a mind game to better his chances of winning? He just couldn’t accept that. He thought back trying to figure out just what had happened that night and truth be told, Duo had no idea he was going to play professionally when he agreed to accompany him. Then again, he hadn’t suggested they go to his room until after they’d confessed their involvement to each other either. From what Wufei had said he’d been playing games with him for some time. Their conversation revealed a past riddled with such encounters though, as was the case with Hiiro so far, once things cooled off the boy usually made his escape. Wufei had been shocked to hear that Duo had actually spent the day with him and a second night to boot. He consoled himself by concluding that whatever had upset him was the cause of his extended need but Hiiro couldn’t help but feel a little elated by the fact that it had never happened to Wufei.
