"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 16

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIIIIITHDAAAAY, DEAR, HIIIIIIIIREEEEEEE! HAAAAAPY BIRTHDAAAAAAY TOOOOOO YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!”

Ok. So it wasn’t the Boy’s Tabernacle Choir but the five year old little girl blowing out the candles on her triple-decker, rainbow colored cake couldn’t have been happier. The day care had been draped in many colored ribbons of brightly colored paper and balloons which was the norm whenever it came to things dealing with Hiire since none of the boys could ever decide on what color to use. Duo gazed at his daughter as she took the knife from Quatre’s hand and cut the cake herself and smiled. She’d always been like that, very independent with an insatiable desire to learn new things. He thought back on the little car he and Hiiro had built her when she was one. It seemed like such a short time ago they’d argued over the idea that just because she was a baby didn’t mean she was incapable of learning how a propulsion pedal worked. If she could push a car from Toy’R’Us with her feet then she could learn to push a pedal as well. The idea had worked out very well indeed so they’d added a tiny motorcycle six months later. By the time she was two the curly haired little girl was a proficient driver with a ravenous thirst for more new experiences.

He’d been a little irritated to find that Trowa had been working with her on more than just her agility workouts but in the end he couldn’t argue that the best way to prevent injury was to know what your doing. Having a three year old that could nail a bumble bee to the wall with a letter opener had been a bit of a challenge but in the end she had good judgment and never harmed anyone with her abilities. Quatre had helped out a lot on that front. His kind ways and endless patience had rubbed off on her at an early age. Duo really believed that it was just in her nature to be passive but Quatre’s loving heart had been indispensable.

He smiled again as she plopped a huge piece of cake down in front of Petal who had, over the years, become her best friend. The little brown haired girl was very quiet most of the time but Duo had seen her and Hiire chatting away as they busily played together many times. Petal really reminded him of Trowa sometimes; she just always seemed to be deep in thought. Not that she couldn’t wail when the time called for it but he could see traits in her that would help her become an exceptional adult. Petal offered her the small smile that so reminded him of Trowa before digging into the brightly colored confection. Dale received a heated glare that was so reminiscent of Hiiro from Hiire’s black/brown eyes it sent him cowering back into his seat when he tried to snatch Patty’s plate away out of turn. Duo’s chest puffed up as his mind supplied a firm `that’s my girl.`

“You want a valium?” Hiiro’s soft tone purred right next to his ear. He’d been so intent on watching Hiire he hadn’t even noticed his husband’s presence.

“Gods, she’s beautiful,” Duo chuckled, swelling just a little bit more.

He smiled as Quatre leaned over the table, helping to distribute the plates and Hiire took the opportunity to goose him in the side. He giggled and pulled away which showed a weakness that got him summarily tackled by no less than four five year olds who proceeded to tickle him silly. Seeing the blond boy at their mercy made Duo’s crotch twitch. It was about time to go over and have a Saturday night visit with Trowa and Quatre now that he thought about it. But first…

“Want to have another?” Duo grinned, leaning back into Hiiro’s strong chest.

“Might take awhile.” Hiiro smirked, letting the warmth of the words wash over Duo’s ear and neck. “You’re really hard to knock up.” he added, laying his body gently against his now trembling husband’s back.

“Best get started then.” Duo breathed, backing him toward the cellar stairs. No one but Trowa noticed their retreat and all he did was come over and take up the place where they had been standing to ensure no one else went through that door for a while.

Hiiro’s hands slipped around Duo’s thin waist the moment the door shut. Duo turned, his arms moving fluently around his husband’s neck as he covered his mouth with his own, the familiar heat the blue eyed boy caused in him flooding his chest, his stomach... his groin. There was no need to speak, they both knew exactly what to do and moved in perfect synchronization to the bottom of the stairs, Hiiro pressing his slender body along the wall as he worked steadily on removing the barriers between them. Duo hissed, Hiiro pressed on. Duo breathed, Hiiro swallowed it and coaxed him to produce more. Duo groaned, Hiiro redoubled his efforts to call forth more of the delicious sounds. For all the eccentricities in their lives, their Chinese partner and both of their outside interests in Quatre and Trowa, there was simply nothing to compare to this. Just the two of them caught in a hurricane of deepest emotion and purely decadent physical rhapsody.

It was over with much too quickly for the Japanese boy’s liking and he found it too difficult to give him up just because they’d reached fruition, pressing him back into the wall he’d pinned him to. Duo groaned deliciously, accepting whatever his husband felt the need to give though they both knew he was a little anxious to get back upstairs. It wasn’t every day your daughter turned five but for whatever the reason Hiiro just simply couldn’t let go. It was becoming more and more apparent he had something else in his heart the longer he insisted on holding Duo there, just kissing him softly, refusing to break the bond they’d just formed.

“Come away with me,” the Japanese boy said softly.

“What?” Duo breathed, taken aback by the rush of emotion the words had caused in him. Hiiro wanted to run away with him? Like lovers who’ve just met and discovered each other? With all their responsibilities? And…

“What about Wufei?” he asked, sounding a little frightened all of a sudden.

“Just for a couple of weeks,” Hiiro chuckled; kissing his neck as he finally let his legs down. “Come on,” he encouraged, using the persuasive force of that little spot behind the longhaired boy’s ear. “He’ll understand” he assured him. “You guys were gone longer than that during competition and I survived,” he pointed out.

“But ... the school,” Duo reasoned. “Hiire,” he said but his heart was already screaming, yes!

Two weeks alone with Hiiro sounded like heaven on earth if he had to be honest with himself. It had been a very long time since the two of them had just been alone. In the end, Wufei hadn’t taken the news as smoothly as Hiiro had thought he would. He said he understood and wished them well but it was pretty obvious he felt segregated and singled out. When Duo confronted him about it he insisted it was a petty feeling that he flat out refused to allow to influence their relationship and proved the strength of his resolve by reminding Duo that he had just as much to offer in a one on one encounter as Hiiro. Well, Duo couldn’t argue there as he whole heartedly agreed so things seemed to be alright for the most part. By the time they were ready to leave the Chinese boy appeared happy to have some time with Hiire on his own as well. Duo, on the other hand, was blatantly jealous of that fact and had a hard time relinquishing the child to Wufei’s care before boarding the plane.

Once in the air however, the mood shifted very quickly. Hiiro had almost instantly become as playful as a pup, locking hands with his beauteous lover in spite of the odd stares it caused and flirting shamelessly every chance he got. He even tossed the blanket over their heads so they could make out on the plane which earned them a few heated glares instead of just curious glances when they departed but Hiiro just didn’t seem to care. His impetuous kiss by the elevators earned them several cat calls from a passing group of teens that inspired him to pick his braided lover up and cradle him in his arms triumphantly as he ducked into the elevator with him.

Every day was the same. The hotel was very nice as they hardly lived off their income from the day care. The investments they’d made with the earnings from their years in the game kept them from having to worry about spending. Hiiro was going a little nuts dipping into their means however. He’d presented Duo with a diamond tie for his braid on their first morning there, taking the time to brush the long mane out after making love to him slow and warm before weaving it for him and placing the gift on the tasseled end.

They called Wufei that evening after yet another romp in the sheets. This had been more playful than anything else, emphasizing their need to be connected on a deeper level more than the need to satisfy their bodies. The Chinese boy couldn’t help but smile at the glow on their faces; it was pretty obvious how much they were enjoying themselves. Hiiro suggested a trip site seeing the next day that took them all over the city. Again, Duo found himself being gaped at as his husband made no effort whatsoever to hide the fact that they were intimately involved from the public. Actually, he appeared down right fit to burst with pride over it. Most people just smiled uncertainly but some grinned right along with them. Others averted their eyes and there were the odd few that looked like they’d just as soon spit on them as look at them. Hiiro had turned one of these small minded people into a very amusing little show on the sidewalk on their third day when he sneered as he had every day that they’d passed his newsstand. Apparently, the Japanese boy was just in too good a mood to be able to work up any real anger toward the idiot so he just embarrassed the hell out of him and left him to pick up the broken pieces of his pride while Duo chuckled and made him feel about twenty feet tall.

The fifth night was a romantic dinner for two that ended in a night of deeply passionate love making. Hiiro took the time to cherish every single aspect of the guy he’d chosen as his mate, reminding him time and again how much he appreciated his choosing him as well. Their nightly call to Wufei had waited until morning that day but Wufei only smiled and put Hiire on the phone.

By the eighth day Duo was making two calls a day home to talk to Wufei and Hiire and Hiiro seemed a little more content to just lie beside him and stroke his hair while he went on and on telling their Chinese lover all about their daily activities. Hiiro was very much enjoying his time alone with his husband but he knew when to take action.

“What’s this?” Duo asked, rolling over to make room for his husband as he crawled in beside him on the bed, their heads at the foot where Duo had been stretched out reading the morning paper before they set out for their day’s activities.

“Tickets home,” Hiiro sighed, snuggling up beside him to bury his nose in his skin and breath deep.

“You want to leave early?” Duo asked, unable to keep the confusion from his tone. It had been getting worse every day, his need to return to Wufei and Hiire clamoring with his desire to remain in solitude with Hiiro.

“I think two weeks was a bit much,” Hiiro replied casually. “I miss Hiire and Wufei,” he added, smiling at the knowing smile that spread on Duo’s lips.

“Ahhh, I’m sorry,” the longhaired boy sighed, rolling into him and enjoying the way he just automatically wrapped him up tight.

“I do miss them, you know,” Hiiro admonished. “I want to do this again though,” he told him. “Maybe a week next time. Couple times a year?” he mused. Duo sighed and nodded, seeming very happy with that idea.

“When do we leave?” he asked, rolling over at Hiiro’s command.

“Just as soon as I’m done with this,” the blue eyed boy grinned, slipping his hand down his pants and his tongue down his throat.

The trip home was a little more subdued. Hiiro’s attitude had sobered and congealed into something more profound than the playfulness he’d displayed when they had arrived. He spent a good deal of the flight just holding Duo’s hand and smiling as they spoke quietly and he absently twisted the ring on the boy’s slender finger. Duo’s anxiety to see their lover and daughter again had become a catalyst for Hiiro’s own need for their presence so both of them were fairly vibrating with anticipation when they bounded happily up the front path of their home. They couldn’t wait to see Wufei’s face as they had decided to keep their early return a secret and surprise him. Duo was literally knocked back two feet and into Hiiro’s stunned arms when the face that opened the door turned out to be Relena’s.

“Wha... Where’s Hiire?” Duo stammered, looking as frightened as a mouse in a box full of cats as he looked into the girl’s steady blue eyes.

“Hello, Hiiro,” she replied, ignoring Duo’s inquiry, her mouth turning up into a small, unfriendly grin as the longhaired boy pushed past her into the house in search of his daughter. Five minutes later Hiiro, Duo and Wufei were having a very hot, very restrained conversation by the back door that led into the back yard while Relena sat at the dining table looking much too smug.

“What in the hell is she doing here?” Duo growled, trying to keep his voice down as Hiire had been sent to play in her room.

“She arrived this morning,” Wufei sighed. “I tried to call you but they said you’d checked out.”

“Every heard of a cell!?” Duo snapped impatiently.

“We turned them off when we boarded the plane,” Hiiro reminded him.

“She can’t take her away!” Duo stated hotly, flashing a hateful, determined glance at the girl who still looked as smug as ever.

“Relax,” Hiiro soothed. “We don’t even know if that’s why she’s come.”

“She can’t take her,” Duo repeated firmly.

“We’ll work it out,” Hiiro assured him.

It took a few minutes for them to all get settled around the dining table. Wufei had made tea to give them all time to adjust and work out their thoughts though he wasn’t really sure if it had helped. He really wasn’t in any big hurry for the girl’s speech but there was no getting around it.

“Why’re you here?” Duo asked none to kindly, finally tiring of the uncomfortable silence.

She took her time to sip her tea before turning her water blue eyes on Hiiro. “You’re looking well,” she smiled.

“What do you want,” Hiiro replied evenly, not unkindly but there was no tolerance for delay in his tone.

“You’ve done a good job with her,” she smiled.

“Duo’s raised her,” he informed her.

“We all have,” the braided boy countered. “Why did you come back?” he asked, pushing for the bottom line.

“You certainly have a talent for taking what’s mine,” she said coolly.

“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” Wufei went off, standing so fast from his chair he tipped it over. “Hiiro never belonged to you and you FUCKING ABANDONED HIRRE!” he roared, causing the girl to cower back in her chair under the brute force of his rage.

“I didn’t come to take her away!” she shrieked in a tiny little voice, holding her hands in front of her face protectively. Wufei’s fury ebbed slowly, her words and the oddly sincere quality of the tears now pouring from her eyes calming him enough to back off.

“Why are you here?” Hiiro asked again.

“I… I’m … pregnant,” she replied in a tiny little voice of purest shame and anguish. They all just sat there staring at her completely at a loss for words until she added to Duo. “I want to leave it with you.”

“WHAT!?”

“NO WAY!”

“YOU STUPID...”

“HOW CAN YOU EVEN...”

It went on and on, each astonished question hammering the girl further into the ground until Hiiro finally barked…

“ENOUGH!”

…and all fell silent.

“Why?” the Japanese boy asked evenly once Relena had composed herself a little. She managed to gather herself up a bit trying very hard to look cool and collected.

“If you don’t,” she stammered, her hands shaking in fear. “I’ll take Hirre,” she said but the words didn’t earn her the shouts she’d expected. No. The pure hatred in the glares that were leveled on her now were much more frightening. “I want you to come with me,” she told Hiiro, looking more desperate by the moment.

“You’re saying that unless I leave with you and Duo adopts your unborn child you’ll take Hiire away from us?” Hiiro replied evenly. She managed to nod defiantly even under the smoldering glares that continued to bore holes through her head.

“You’ll be dead in less than a day,” Duo interjected coolly.

“D..don’t you threaten me!” the girl stammered looking very alarmed.

“Duo,” Wufei sighed dejectedly.

“I’m not,” the longhaired boy clarified. “Hiire’s under the protection of the pact,” he told them, never taking his violet eyes off Relena. “If you take her, you’ll be dead in less than a day.”

“W… what’s he talking about?” Relena asked, sitting up straighter.

“They’d really kill her?” Hiiro asked, making the girl blanch suddenly as she realized what they were saying. Duo nodded, making sure she saw the honesty in his eyes.

“Hiiro?” Relena whimpered in a frightened little voice.

“I need to speak to you,” Hiiro said, pulling his husband to his feet and guiding him from the room.

“You ok?” he asked once they were alone.

“I’m not kidding,” Duo told him, looking very much not ok. “She can’t take her. They’ll put a bullet through her head.”

“No ones taking Hiire,” Hiiro assured him, pulling him into a warm embrace for a moment. “What we need to figure out right now is,” he said pulling back to look him deeply in the eyes. “What of the unborn child?”

Duo just looked at him, suddenly comprehending where his heart was. “You want to keep it” he said sounding simply astounded and asking when Hiiro didn’t reply. “You’re sure?”

“What do you want?”

“A son,” Duo chuckled, giving into the secret desire he’d been harboring in his heart.

“What if it’s a girl?” Hiiro grinned.

“It’s not,” Duo told him with the utmost conviction.

“You seem pretty sure about that,” his husband giggled, giving into the urge to kiss his lips lightly.

“It’s a boy... trust me,” Duo reiterated, feeling pretty light headed himself.

“Ok, here’s the deal,” the braided boy said as they returned to the dining room where Relena was sitting in her silent resolve and Wufei was trying to dig holes in her face with his eyes. The couple’s lighthearted attitude took their Chinese lover by surprise. “We’ll take the baby,” Duo said without further ado. “But,” he added, preempting Relena’s reply. “You’re going to sign official adoption papers for both the kids AND,” he said holding up a finger to silence the girl, “you’re going to have your tubes tied so this doesn’t happen again.” He grinned as Hiiro slipped up behind him, wrapping his arms around his waist and rubbing his tummy as if it were actually Duo who was pregnant.

“That’s not what I….”

“If you refuse,” Hiiro smiled over Duo’s shoulder as Wufei continued to sit there drop jawed starting at them all.

“Then we’ll have to inform the kid’s Grandfather and his estranged, over protective menagerie,” Duo grinned, finishing for him.

“Grandfather?” Relena asked nervously.

“The guy that’ll kill you if you try to take Hiire away,” Wufei informed her with an indulgent little smirk. She blanched again as the reality of her situation started to sink in.

“I… I have to go,” she said, looking very confused as she rose from her chair.

“IIIII don’t think so,” Duo said, making her pause.

“What?” she replied, looking terrified.

“Maybe she should stay here until the papers are signed?” the longhaired boy mused to his ever grinning husband.

“Here?!” she gasped.

“Here?” Wufei echoed.

“We could keep her until the baby’s born,” Hiiro suggested, rubbing Duo’s tummy again.

“WHAT!?” she barked, backing away toward the door.

“Yeah,” Duo smiled. “Then we could make sure she’s taking care of herself,” he agreed.

“Are you insane?” Wufei wondered out loud, making them both chuckle.

“A son,” Hiiro breathed, pulling Duo tight against him. Wufei looked at them for a long moment before the enormity of what was happening finally really sank in and a huge grin spread across his face.

“How far along?” he asked going to his lovers excitedly.

“I don’t know” Duo giggled. “Ask her,” he said, indicating the girl who stood frozen in the middle of the room staring blankly into the empty air.
