"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 12

The fights had started that night. Duo and Hiiro knew when the couple was fighting because Wufei spent a great deal of time explaining his side of the argument to Duo who remained silent most of the time. Sally was insistent that they plan for a family in the future but Wufei just couldn’t warm up to the idea. He’d never planned on a family and he really didn’t think he’d like being around children all that much. He didn’t mind Hiire but she was an exception. With Duo around she was usually such a joy it was no effort at all but a baby? More importantly a baby without Duo’s expertise around to pacify it? He just couldn’t see it.

As time moved on the arguments became more frequent until finally Wufei forbid the subject to be discussed in an effort to save the relationship. It wasn’t until Sally decided to go back to working for the league that the true depth of the damage was felt. Her involvement meant that she was away from home a good deal during the season. Zechs, as well, had returned to the game, enlisting Duo and Hiiro’s assistance in caring for Hiire which meant the two and a half year old girl had pretty much moved in with them. Neither of them seemed to mind much though, they’d already spent so much time with her they were used to her presence and Duo had somehow just naturally fallen into the role of a parent. Hiiro had also taken to caring for the little girl with an ease that both surprised and delighted Quatre and Trowa. They were both very happy with the idea of having a little niece to spoil so all in all Hiire’s world had turned out bright and full of love.

Wufei, on the other hand, just didn’t seem to be able to see the child as a niece or sister or friend’s child or anything but Duo’s. As far as he was concerned Hiire was Duo’s daughter and that made her more than a niece to him. He didn’t see himself as a father figure as Hiiro seemed to but he couldn’t help treating her as more than niece. It wasn’t long until Sally began to resent the child and Duo as Wufei’s love for her grew. The couple spent little time socializing with Hirro and Duo when Sally was home because of this but while she was away the Chinese boy was practically impossible to get rid of. His interest in Hiire had proven very helpful as this led to his taking her on outings which meant Hiiro and Duo had more time alone which mean Duo got laid more which mean Trowa got to stay home more often which made Quatre a happy little camper.

Wufei was bringing her home from a very enjoyable afternoon at the zoo one evening when he caught a glimpse of Hiiro and Trowa in the hall kissing each other warmly. Hiiro was in his white pajama bottoms, the ones Wufei had bought him for Christmas. The one’s he’d almost ripped off of him in his impatience on New Year’s Eve. Trowa wore a pair of loose fitting gray boxers and it was pretty obvious they had just spent some intimate time together. Hiiro seemed to feel his gaze and broke off the kiss, looking down the hall toward him where Wufei quickly looked away, pushing the memories from his mind and the lonesome pain from his chest as he moved into the living room where Duo was resting and reading a book.

“Back already?” the braided boy smiled, glancing at the clock. “Damn, I didn’t realize it was so late,” he said, standing up to stretch. “Hey, baby,” he smiled as Hiire toddled into his arms. He really just couldn’t believe she was going to be three soon. “Did you have fun with Uncle Wufei?” he asked making the Chinese boy scowl softly. He’d spent a good deal of time teaching her to call him Fei after Duo’s favorite nickname for him and he didn’t need `mama` undermining his efforts.

“Efant,” she sang, brandishing the little stuffed elephant Wufei had bought her at the zoo’s shop.

“Eflalumps and woozles!” Duo smiled, lifting her into the air and spinning her around happily, making her giggle jubilantly.

Wufei felt his heart soar just looking at them together. Duo was so damn radiant when he was with the child it just took his breath away. He watched with a full heart and a happy smile as the longhaired boy gummed her tummy, filling the house with high pitched squeals of laughter then hugged her to him grinning into her happy face and suddenly he realized why he was so against having kids with Sally when Duo looked over at him and he saw, for all the arguments against it and all the impossibilities that it could ever be, his unborn children in his eyes. It was a very sobering experience that Duo was apparently completely unaware of as he set the child on her feet and took her off in the direction of the kitchen.

“You hungry?” he called back. “I made pot roast,” he told him by way of an invitation but Wufei was having trouble standing up much less walking. He couldn’t stand Duo disappearing from sight behind the kitchen door though so he forced himself to move anyway. At least to the other side of the wall where he was instantly transfixed again.

“There’s some salad left if roast is too heavy,” Duo told him, not really paying attention to the odd expression on his face as he put Hiire in her high chair. “Shit, I’m out of that ginger dressing you like but we’ve got…Fei?” Duo gasped suddenly as he found himself being tightly embraced by his raven haired friend. “What’s wrong?” he asked concerned as he closed his arms around him. “Gods, you’re shaking. What is it?” he asked, holding him tight.

“I love you,” Wufei choked. Duo felt his hot tears soaking his shoulder and a vicious wave of relief rip through his chest that left him weak and trembling. “Gods, I’ve missed you so much,” the Chinese boy began to sob, clinging even tighter to him.

“Hiiro!” Duo shouted and a moment later Hiiro and Trowa entered the kitchen. They were both properly dressed now and looked instantly alarmed the moment they saw Wufei sobbing into Duo’s shoulder.

“Can you take her out of here?” Duo asked Trowa who nodded and complied instantly. Hiiro wasted no time wrapping himself around both of them and pulling them tight. They stayed that way a very long time before the tears finally ebbed and Wufei began to speak.

“I’m sorry,” he began. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” he told them, trying to pull himself together a little as they separated and moved to sit down. “I just... I saw you there... with her... and... Damn it, I miss you guys,” he breathed, leaning forward to lay his head on Hiiro’s chest.

“We miss you too,” he Japanese boy told him, lacing his fingers into the back of his loosely held ponytail.

“I don’t know what to do,” Wufei confessed.

“Come home,” Duo supplied, earning himself a mildly shocked and reluctantly reproving look from his uncertain husband but Wufei’s reaction wiped his doubt away in two words.

“Can I?” he asked, looking up at them, his eyes so full of hope and relief Hiiro understood at once Duo had said the right thing.

“Of course,” the Japanese boy smiled, leaning down to kiss him long and deep.

Duo took his place the moment he moved away then they found themselves in a three way hug for a while. What was left of the tension slowly seeped away to be replaced by a heat he hadn’t felt in a very long time when Duo’s hand slowly slid down to the small of his back and slipped under the waistband of his pants. He looked up intending to speak but his mouth was instantly occupied as Hiiro kissed him again only this time it held a promise of something much more tantalizing than a mere hug.

“What about... Hiire?” Wufei breathed, already losing his vision to the heat that was slamming into his senses.

“She’s with Trowa,” Duo reminded him, pushing him back on the table.

“Trowa?” Wufei mused, barely recalling that the taller boy was even there then… “Oh, yeah, you just… are you up for this?” he asked his Japanese lover.

“I think I can manage,” Hiiro grinned, eyeing the bottle of vitamins on the counter and thinking about how ironic it was that it had been Sally that had started him on the therapy.

None of this was fair to the poor woman but right at that moment he just couldn’t bring himself to care. They found out the next morning that Trowa had taken the baby back to his and Quatre’s place which was a good thing because they had completely forgotten themselves and things had gotten very loud at several different points during the night.

They spoke in detail about Sally as well agreeing that all this had been terribly unfair to her and that they should all be as supportive as possible toward her but when it came time to tell her that he wanted to break it off Wufei found it unnecessary to go into detail as she apparently had been thinking the same thing for some time. The truth was, she really wanted a family and their inability to agree on the subject had changed her mind about their being able to make a life together. She wasn’t happy when she left but they were ok for the most part. Actually, it had been the first time they hadn’t fought while having a serious discussion in a long time.

Hiire spent quite a lot of time with her uncles for a couple of weeks while the trio got reacquainted in so many different ways Hiiro’s supply of vitamin’s had to be replenished. Trowa had shown up on the third weekend and snatched the Japanese boy away for a day at the beach with absolutely NO SEX claiming he was looking peaked and needed a break. The fact that they ended up making love under the pier was kept under wraps however, as it had not only not been Trowa’s idea but he’d managed to dissuade his playful lover for over an hour before Hiiro finally got his way.

With Wufei’s return and the fact that he’d now moved in with them life just seemed to fall back into perfect balance again. They spent Hiire’s third birthday on L3 with Quatre and Trowa who insisted on giving her a proper, princess’s party complete with pony rides and a crown of real diamonds that the press had a cow over. Duo had decided that childcare would be his chosen profession and opened a day care center where Quatre volunteered a lot of the time. Trowa and Hiiro fell into the hobby of building miniature Gundam’s in the garage though they tended to spend a lot of the time either making out or full on making love. Quatre was known to mysteriously disappear when strange sounds began to emanate from the garage which only tended to increase the number and volume of them.

Duo had never shown any signs of jealousy of resentment over this part of his husband’s life. He loved the other two boys very much and was happy that they were so happy, to be honest. On the odd days when Hiiro was too over exerted to perform he still had Wufei so no one was left wanting. Even when Hiiro’s body demanded a break he still found his longhaired husband an irresistible lure and loved to tease him in other ways until either Wufei would end his suffering or Hiiro would find a way. All in all it was a very healthy, fulfilling way of life for them all.

It became clear that they would have to limit their activities one day when Hiiro had the braided boy bent over the kitchen counter and Hiire happened to wander in. They managed to deal with the situation fairly smoothly but none of them was stupid enough to believe a small female child would be unaffected by such a lifestyle. After that sex was restricted to the bedroom, only after the baby was asleep and with the door locked. The shower was ok too. Their fun wasn’t completely wiped out however, as Quatre and Trowa still took her from time to time for a weekend leaving them the freedom to get as wild and kinky as they liked.

For Hiiro, this was a monumentally enjoyable way to live. He got to make love to at least one, a lot of the time two, and then two different pairs of drop dead gorgeous lovers every single day, sometimes twice a day. Every week out of every month that went by. The thought occurred to him that he might just be totally addicted to his lovers as time wore on but he just couldn’t work up any concern over it. Life was good. Hell, it was great! He was truly the luckiest man that had ever lived.

**

“Quatre!”

“Yeah?”

“Have you seen Hiiro?”

“Umm, he and Trowa went to umm… straighten up the store room,” the blond blushed, glancing at Dale, the dark haired, six year old girl that was helping him put the books away after their afternoon reading class.

“Oh,” Duo replied, shifting gears. “Well, can you tell him to get Hiire when he closes up? I’ve got to leave early and drop by the market.”

“All right,” Quatre smiled.

It took a little longer at the market than he had expected but the crowds this time of year were unpredictable. He also couldn’t help dropping in the hardware store for the parts Hiiro needed to complete the stabilizer on Hiire’s Christmas present. He was surprised when he still arrived home before his Japanese husband.

“Did Hiiro call?” he asked as Wufei helped him bring the bags inside. The air was crisp, the sky was a bright, brilliant blue and every house on the lane was draped in tinsel and lights that would soon glitter in the darkness.

“No, but wasn’t he closing down today?” Wufei replied, pausing a moment to catch his balance so he wouldn’t slip on the icy walk and Duo chuckled at the funny face he’d made.

“Yeah, guess Mrs. Walton must’ve been late picking Amy up again,” the longhaired boy sighed just before he busted his ass on the spot where Wufei had paused.

Wufei laughed his ass off the entire time he was helping him up and re-bagging the groceries that had spilled. They managed to get the rest inside and mostly put away before Wufei’s attention turned to the way his longhaired lover’s tight, black jeans hugged his rather shapely thighs.

“So, Hiiro’s got Hiire huh?” he grinned at the fact that Duo hadn’t noticed the hungry leer in his eyes as they perused his long body.

“Yeah.”

“Sooo,” Wufei cooed, slipping up smoothly behind him “We’ve got a few minutes to ourselves?” he asked, nuzzling the now grinning and blushing boy’s neck from behind.

“They could be home any minute,” Duo chuckled invitingly, his body bending slightly in a way that made it incredibly easy for Wufei to press himself into just the right spot.

“Mmm, exciting huh?” the raven haired boy breathed, slipping his hand down the front of his jeans.

Duo hissed and shoved his ass harder back into his lover’s hips, gripping the counter as he had so many times before but Wufei was soon unsatisfied with this and turned him around so he could kiss him as well. They had progressed to a point where it was becoming necessary for Duo to either turn back around or shed his jeans altogether when they heard the door open and Hiiro come in.

“S...stop,” Duo breathed but Wufei was having a hard time with that idea.

“Just... wait.”

“Damn.”

“Duo.”

“Nnn…”

They both started slightly when the door to the kitchen swung open but the fact that it was Hiiro and he had a huge grin on his face upon seeing them kept them from pulling completely apart.

“Hmmm,” the blue eyed boy grinned, going to join them. “Started without me?” he smiled, reaching into assist his raven haired lover as he drew another deep throated groan from Duo.

“Why don’t you go sit down and watch?” Wufei grinned. “I kind of wanted a little ‘me’ time,” he told him, bringing a skeptical scowl to Hiiro’s face.

“We shouldn’t... do this... here... ah!” Duo moaned, clinging to Hiiro’s arm to help him withstand what Wufei’s hand was doing to him. “Did you put Hiire down?” he asked, giving into the impulse to arch back on the counter.

“She wasn’t up,” Hiiro smiled, loving the way he looked.

“What?” Wufei asked as the answer didn’t seem to make any sense.

“She must’ve been asleep when I came in,” the blue eyed boy replied, his expression turning to one of sudden shock when Duo shot up off the counter.

“Didn’t you bring her home?” the longhaired boy asked. rushing to adjust his clothes.

“I thought you…” Hiiro stopped in mid sentence as they all realized no one knew where their adopted daughter was.

Duo was out of the kitchen in a shot and on the phone to Quatre but the blond was just as shocked and concerned as they were. He’d forgotten to tell Hiiro to see to the child but when he saw that she was gone he’d just assumed Hiiro had taken her. A trip back to the day care provided little information as to the girl’s whereabouts and by the time the police arrived Duo was fit to be tied. Hiiro had become so displaced in his attempt to control his rage he was barely capable of speech. Trowa, too, seemed to have gone into some form of dormant fury and Quatre had disappeared apparently to wander the streets in his search.

The police were of little help leaving the lot of them frustrated and feeling very helpless. They had contacted Zechs but no one really knew where Relena might be. The thought that she might have shown up and simply taken her daughter back occurred to them but they wouldn’t know until they located her. Zechs thought she might be somewhere in China at that moment. She’d been difficult to keep up with over the past couple of years, bouncing from one lover to another and landing in whatever country held the most fun. Duo had decided that if that was the case he’d just let Hiiro kill her this time and be done with it.

It was almost dawn before they finally found themselves wandering into their home. Each of them exhausted, frustrated and worried half out of their minds. Trowa had refused to leave Hiiro’s side and still couldn’t raise Quatre on the cell. They all worried for the blond boy as he would no doubt blame himself for not having given Hiiro the message that had no doubt cost them several precious hours but when Hiiro told Trowa to go in search of him he’d only replied that Quatre would never forgive him if he abandoned Hiiro now.

“You should sleep,” Wufei reasoned, knowing his words were nothing more than a sound on the air.

They meant nothing and Duo hadn’t really heard them. Hiiro and Trowa appeared to be beyond sleep and silently took seats at the dining table across from each other. Duo sat down where Wufei had guided him on the couch, his tired body slumping under the weight of his worries as he buried his careworn face in his hands. Wufei wished for the right words but there just weren’t any so he laid his hand gently on his shoulder. The moment his hand made contact Duo’s head suddenly jerked up. Wufei, Hiiro and Trowa all three were instantly on the alert for any sign of a brainstorm about what might have happened as the longhaired boy’s violet eyes hardened to amethyst steel. Each of them followed his gaze until they were all staring at the small red light that told them there was a message waiting for them on the vid phone. Duo kicked the desk chair so hard it splintered into several pieces when Howard’s grinning face appeared on the screen, his arms full of a very red eyed three and a half year old girl.

“Hey Boy! Never saw you as the motherly type!” the man smiled, bouncing the cranky baby on his hip. She looked for the most part unharmed but she was obviously frightened and had been crying. “She’s a real cutie, this one,” he said, touching her cheek. Hiiro’s eye’s narrowed to deadly slits as he watched. “Smart little thing, too” Howard praised, handing her a detonator button to play with. “Which one of you taught her to drive?” he asked, sounding impressed. “You’re going to have to fill me in when I see ya.”

“You’ll be dead,” Duo said evenly, glaring at the image on the screen. No one disagreed.

“Well,” Howard sighed as if he were speaking to a neighbor. “I supposed you’re pretty pissed off right about now. I’ll give ya a day or two to cool off then I’ll be in touch,” he smiled. “Say bye bye to Mommy,” he added using Hiire’s little hand to wave before the screen went blank.

“Can we find him?” Hiiro asked.

“Search the space ports, taverns, brothels,” Duo told them, still glaring at the blank screen. “We need to call off the police. If those idiots even get close she’d be in danger,” he ordered.

“We should’ve killed him when we had the chance,” Trowa interjected.

“He’s already a dead man,” Hiiro replied.

One of them stayed by the phone constantly while they scoured the city for any clues as to Howard’s whereabouts but after a day and a half of searching they’d come up with nothing. Quatre had phoned once but had little to add to the news they told him. He hadn’t really stayed on the phone long enough to do more than tell them all that he was all right and still searching. Trowa was very unhappy with his behavior but concentrated his efforts on finding Hiire instead of stressing over what Quatre might be doing. It was in the afternoon of the second day that they received the second call. It had been brief; all Howard would tell Wufei was that he’d call back in half an hour and Duo should be there so he was. The others waited off to the side so as not to alert the man to their presence while he waited for the call.

“Well, now,” Howard smiled, looking Duo over as if he were a long lost lover. “You’ve aged right well, haven’t ya?” the man grinned.

“Where’s Hiire?” Duo demanded.

“Right here,” Howard smiled as Katell entered the screen holding the child in a way that just made Duo want to rip her now short, yellow hair out. What kind of way was that to hold a child? It looked more like she was wrestling a bag of groceries. “She’s so cute!” Howard cooed, pinching her face lightly which only made her pull away from his hand. “She’s become a fast favorite with the crew,” he grinned, his eyes lighting up as Duo’s darkened and Katell moved away again.

“What do you want?” was Duo’s next question.

“You,” Howard told him as if it were obvious.

“Fine,” the longhaired boy replied. “Where do you want to do the switch?”

Howard laughed lightly. “Tell ya what,” he said, sitting down in a chair and propping his flip flopped feet up on the desk next to the vid phone. “You come home, slip between my sheets and keep me warm for a while and I’ll hold off on letting Conner teach the little girl a few new games,” he grinned in a most satisfied way.

“Since when are you for real about nailing me?” Duo replied evenly. He needed to keep him talking so they could run a trace.

“I’ve had a long time to think it over,” Howard grinned. “Besides,” he smiled, looking Duo over again. “You’re not a little kid anymore. Not to mention I imagine those boys of yours have broken you in pretty well by now. It ought to be interesting to see what you’ve learned,” he leered.

“Where?” Duo asked.

“Come to the Crack House on Tadum Road at nine o’clock,” the man told him confidently as Katell appeared in the background behind him still holding Hiire like a sack of potatoes. “Oh,” Howard added, grinning more widely. “And tell your boyfriends to relax. The kid and I won’t be anywhere near that dive so it won’t do them any good show up with their guns a blazing,” he chuckled. “I’m really looking forward to seeing ya boy,” he smiled then cut the connection.

“Anything?” Duo asked immediately but Wufei only shook his head dejectedly. “Shit.”
