"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 11

He didn’t understand and didn’t want to believe it but he was starting to get the nasty feeling that Wufei was purposely avoiding getting into an intimate situation with them. He consoled himself with the idea that maybe the baby was making him nervous or something and pushed the disturbing feeling aside but it was getting harder and harder to do so. Something was nagging at him, reminding him more and more often that his reluctance had begun long before their little vacation had started. How long had it been? Three weeks? Four? Everything else seemed ok within the group; it was only the time they spent intimately that appeared to be suffering, but in the end, there was no real reason to think there was a problem so he pushed it onto the back burner. The answer appeared to lie in cornering him and if he still found a reason to evade them, then they’d have to sit down and have a long talk.

He finished the dishes then went back outside where he found his longhaired lover was now the one on the blanket with the Hiire. It was pretty obvious to anyone that knew Relena that she had chosen to name the child after Hiiro. Oddly enough, Duo seemed quite happy with this. Hiiro smiled at them as they lay snoozing on the blanket, Hirre pilled up on his chest sleeping peacefully with her little pug thumb in her mouth. Duo was wearing a dark blue shirt that contrasted prettily with the one year old’s tightly curled, honey blond hair and pale skin. Duo’s eyes were closed; he looked so serene it just made Hiiro’s chest swell with pride that his lover was such a total hottie as he went to take the chair beside their platinum haired friend who was staring at the pair in wonder.

“I don’t understand how he does it,” Zechs said after a moment. Hiiro smiled again feeling very happy with his lover. “She takes one look at me and boom... scream city but…” he let the thought trail off in favor of finishing with a gesture toward the slumbering pair with his elegant hand.

“He has a way,” Hiiro agreed. “Maybe it’s because you look like Relena,” he chided his companion and smiled again when it gained a chuckle. “Where is she anyway?”

“Rio,” Zechs replied. “I think,” he added rubbing his face tiredly.

“Sorry.”

“Not your fault,” the young man told him. Zechs had long since realized that Hiiro was not to blame for his sister’s infatuation, especially since the accident. “She’s really cute, huh?” he smiled, gazing at his niece. “When she’s not wailing that is,” he added, making Hiiro chuckle again.

“What about her Dad?” Hiiro asked.

“He doesn’t want anything to do with her,” Zechs sighed. “I’ve tried to call him about a zillion times but...he never wanted this from the beginning,” he told him. “She was trying to get pregnant. I think she thought it would get her some attention somehow,” he snorted wryly.

“It’s good of you to take care of her,” Hiiro praised.

“She’s a beautiful child,” he told him. “I’m afraid she’s not very happy with me though,” he sighed.

“Why don’t you hire a Nanny?” Hiiro suggested.

“Perhaps,” Zechs replied thoughtfully before they lapsed into silence.

Wufei didn’t pop back up until well after dinner and then disappeared again soon after. He’d managed to either be absent or already asleep when they went to bed every night since they arrived and Hiiro was just about fed up. Duo was getting cranky and when Duo was cranky he didn’t get his snuggle time and that simply would not do. He was sitting quietly in the living room at two a.m. when his Chinese lover finally came stumbling in. He watched him swerve through the room avoiding the furniture on the right only to bump into that which was on the left and giggle at himself drunkenly as he steadied his wobbly legs and made another attempt.

“Have fun?”

Wufei froze, then turned very slowly to peer into the dim light of the small lamp Hiiro had been reading by. “Why’re you up?” he asked.

“Why’re you drunk?” Hiiro countered.

“What?” the raven haired boy grinned. “`m not `lowed’ta drink?” Hiiro just looked at him trying to figure him out but he was at a loss. “Pft,” Wufei finally waved a hand at him. “`m goin’ta bed,” he slurred. Hiiro couldn’t help but laugh when he walked right into the wall and bounced off landing on his ass in a pile on the floor.

“Come on,” Hiiro told him, going to help him up.

“Thanks,” Wufei breathed, falling into his arms once he was on his feet and Hiiro baulked at the stench.

“Jesus! You smell like a woman!” he ground out, holding his nose away from the offensive smell. It suddenly occurred to him why he had been reluctant to lay with them, why he’d been out so much and why he now smelled like the perfume counter at the department store. “You need a shower,” he told him, pulling him towards the stairs.

“Wunna sleep.”

“You can’t sleep with Duo smelling like that,” he told him. Five minutes later found them in the bathroom where Hiiro was doing his best to divest the squirming boy of his clothes while he ran a hot shower but Wufei really wasn’t cooperating very well. He’d somehow tangled his left arm up in the leg of his pants with Hiiro’s hand caught in the middle as they stumbled and fell to the floor. That’s about when Duo walked in.

“Hmm, can I play too?” he grinned, taking the scene as one of giddy foreplay.

“He’s drunk,” Hiiro informed him, wrenching the perfumed shirt off before Duo got too close and tossing it in a corner.

“So he’s at our mercy at last?” Duo grinned, vanishing his pants for him. Duo paused to look at him a moment then got down on all fours and kissed him. “That’s a nice perfume,” he told him once he’d pulled back. Hiiro’s chest tensed.

“Wen dancing,” Wufei replied with a little grin.

“Mm,” Duo nodded, slipping his hand up the Chinese boy’s thigh as he looked down between his legs. Hiiro closed his eyes, bracing himself… “You want to tell us how in the hell you got lipstick on your dick!!” Hiiro pushed him back to spare their Chinese lover the physical reprimand.

“S`none’a yer damn business!” Wufei growled, pushing himself to his feet but his anger blew away like dry ash when his vision cleared enough to see the expression the words had put on Duo’s face. “I’m sorry,” he said immediately but it did little to atone for the sin. He managed to say a quick “Duo...” before the braided boy turned and fled the room. “Shit,” he breathed, sounding much more sober all of a sudden.

Hiiro didn’t ask any questions that night as he tucked him into one of the other guest rooms. No doubt Duo wasn’t up for his company at the moment and since he smelled like a brothel Hiiro wasn’t real keen on sleeping with him either. The time he spent seeing to the Chinese boy would also give Duo a moment to cool down. Once Wufei was comfortably passed out he returned to Duo who was lying in their bed pretending to be asleep. He undressed and slipped in beside him wrapping him up snuggly in his arms and just lay quietly for awhile.

“You knew he wasn’t gay,” he said after a time.

“Don’t defend him,” Duo replied hotly. “He could have told us,” he reasoned, his tone sounding more hurt now.

“Yes,” Hiiro agreed. “But wouldn’t you have tried to stop him if he had?”

“You think he’s seeing someone specific?” Duo asked suddenly, turning to face him. “I mean if it’s just clubs and all that’s one thing but… you don’t think he’s actually dating someone do you?” he asked half of Hiiro and half just out loud.

“What if he is?”

“Hiiro!” Duo groused, pushing away but the Japanese boy wouldn’t allow him to go far.

“Well, what if he is?” he asked again as Duo grew sulky. “He’s not gay. He also doesn’t live with us. We’re not bound in any way other than how we feel. Do you realize how much time he spends alone?” he asked, making Duo sulk even more. “Can you really deny him what we have if he’s found someone that can supply it for him?” he asked a bit softer.

“I don’t want to lose him,” the longhaired boy sighed, suddenly hugging his husband’s neck.

“You wont,” Hiiro chuckled. “He’ll always be there for us.”

“Yeah, well,” Duo grumbled, moving back a little. “I don’t want to lose the triple decker sandwich either,” he groused, making Hiiro smile and kiss his forehead.

“I’ll see if I can manage to make up for the loss,” he promised, burying his own feelings of betrayal and loss very deep so Duo wouldn’t have to deal with them. He woke the next morning to the delightfully familiar sounds of Duo’s deep throated groans as Wufei reminded him why Hiiro accused him of having a serpent for an ancestor because of the length of his tongue. The sight of the raven haired boy’s dark head planted firmly between Duo’s legs as the beauteous boy cringed and writhed on the bed was more than enough to make him forget their troubles for a while as he dove into the mix and made the most of their first union in what seemed like a very long time.

Wufei was incredible. His every movement and desire seemed to be centered and contrived to bring them the most pleasurable experience they had ever had together. He was so tender and loving at one point that Duo actually teared up; Wufei had only smiled and licked each tear away before pushing him further into the world of unparalleled rapture. He concentrated on Duo more than Hiiro but by no means left him out. Before it was over they had totally reformed the bonds that had been forged so long ago. Hiiro was feeling very confident about their future together when Wufei suddenly said…

“I can’t be with you like this anymore.”

The comfortable quiet that had blanketed them in the afterglow shifted with his words. The mood turning darker as a silence descended.

“I’ve met someone,” the Chinese boy went on. Neither Duo nor Hiiro had moved or opened their mouths to speak. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,” he went on, sounding very sorry indeed.

“How long?” Duo finally broke down and asked.

“A year.”

“WHAT?!” the braided boy barked, coming up off the bed.

“On and off.” Wufei added sheepishly.

“Holy fuck!” Duo exclaimed. “You’ve been seeing someone for a fucking year and you never told us?!” he growled.

“It was just friendly at first.” Wufei countered, removing himself from the bed and the close proximity to the angry Duo. “But.” he said softer, pausing to gaze at the floor. “It’s different now.” he told them. “I think... she might be the one,” he said softly. Duo’s jaw fell open, unable to form a reply.

“Does she know about us?” Hiiro asked reasonably.

“No,” Wufei told them. “How could I tell her I have two male lovers?” he chuckled. “She’s a nice person but I don’t really think anyone could be expected to understand this,” he said, indicating the three of them.

“You’re ashamed of us?” Duo breathed.

“Of course not,” Wufei replied a bit irritably. “I just think it’s too much to ask, that’s all,” he reasoned. “Old girlfriends are one thing,” he went on. “But two boyfriends? At the same time? What woman would be able to tolerate that?”

“So you want us to hide it?” the longhaired boy growled softly.

“No, but I don’t want to throw it in her face either,” Wufei explained.

“If she really loved you it wouldn’t matter!”

“What in the hell is that supposed to mean?! How do you know how she feels?!”

“Duo,” Hiiro soothed before his husband could retort. “Don’t you want him to be happy?”

“He was pretty happy about half an hour ago,” Duo grumbled.

“That is not fair,” Wufei countered.

“Not fair!? You’re the one that...”

“What’s her name?” Hiiro asked, trying not to get bit while he held his hand over Duo’s mouth.

Wufei paused then gathered himself to his full height and replied, “Sally Po.”

“THE DOCTOR!?” Duo gasped, freeing his mouth. “You’ve been seeing MY doctor behind my back!?”

“Duo…”

“Isn’t that unethical or something?” the longhaired boy grumbled sulkily but he allowed Hiiro to move on with the conversation.

“So she’s here?” Hiiro asked. Wufei nodded. Duo mumbled something nasty behind Hiiro’s hand and glared. “Will you invite her to dinner?” This suggestion set the longhaired boy off on a tangent that had him red in the face and Hiiro’s arm tired from trying to wrestle him into silence but in the end he settled on silent fuming as the Chinese boy agreed.

Trowa and Quatre were stunned to hear the news. Zechs of course had no idea what was going on behind the scenes as he was unaware of the nature of the group’s relationships, not to mention totally wrapped up in taking care of Hiire. Trowa had cornered Hiiro in the garage the next day in an attempt to assess his true feelings over the matter at which time Hiiro allowed himself the indulgence of being truly honest and crying a little. Whatever he was willing to do for the sake of Wufei’s happiness he still hated the idea that they were loosing the closeness they’d shared all this time. He refused to show it in front of Duo however, and the braided boy expressed his own discontent in much less subtle ways.

“So when’s the old battle axe supposed to arrive?” he asked, grinning when Wufei glared at him.

“Six,” Quatre supplied, putting the finishing touches on the salad while Trowa helped Zechs set the table. Hiiro sat at the end of the table with Hiire in his lap, letting her chew on the fat of his thumb as he glared dark blue disapproval at his husband.

“Isn’t she the doctor that took care of you after your injury?” Zechs asked, recalling it very well. He was at a loss as to why the boy seemed so vehement toward the woman. The question only seemed to irritate Duo more but at least his sulking meant he’d be quiet for a while. Hiiro offered Wufei a look that was meant to say `he’ll come around` just as the door bell rang.

Hiiro saw Duo actually bite his own lip when Wufei greeted the young woman at the door and kissed her cheek as he took her coat. There was an awkward greeting among them; Duo chose to merely offer her a forced smile that brought a crease to her forehead before they retired to their dinner. Talk was mostly about how they’d spent the last year talking over the phone and meeting during meets. How difficult it had been to keep in touch (Duo scoffed here) and some of the more vivid memories of the past year. It was obvious to anyone who cared to look that the two were hopelessly infatuated with each other which only made Duo less friendly as time moved on. By the time dessert was being cleared away the braided boy had stopped talking completely and refused to look at her. Two glasses of wine later found them all seated comfortably in the living room chatting about old matches and how Sally had patched them up so many times and Wufei made the mistake of pulling the woman back into his chest while putting his arm around her whereupon Duo suddenly excused himself, claiming he needed to put Hirre to bed as she was already sleeping on Hiiro’s shoulder.

Things were very weird between them all for a while after that. Wufei spent less and less time with Hiiro and Duo and Duo’s pissy attitude wasn’t helping any. Sally quit the league and took a job locally. Soon they had announced that they were going to move in together and Duo fell into a deep depression for a while. It took about six months but he finally started to come out of it. Having Wufei with someone else was hard but not having him around at all was unbearable so in the end the braided boy managed to put aside his animosity and try to accept the new arrangement. He still wasn’t what you’d call friendly with Sally but they could get along. Sally had reacted to all this in a positive way, treating the entire situation as if it were nothing more than a strong bond that had been threatened between close friends. Of course, she had no idea the depth of that bond but that hardly mattered.

During this time Zechs had also quit the game in favor of his new parenting role but things didn’t really seem to be going all that well for him. He spent a great deal of time in Duo’s company trying to glean how he could managed the child so easily but in the end this only served to endear Hiire to Duo instead of Zechs. It had been a huge laugh to them all when the toddler’s first word had been when she called Duo Mama. The braided boy had spent a good deal of time correcting this before she finally got it right.

“Uo!” Well, mostly right. “Yaaaaa aa a aaa,” she sang as he bounced her on his knee, her long blond curls springing up and down as she giggled and laughed. Hiiro couldn’t help the huge grin on his face. It never ceased to amaze him how much more beautiful his husband grew over time. Especially at times like this when he was so happy and carefree. Even Sally’s presence couldn’t interfere when he had Hiire in his arms.

“Hiire! Look here,” Zechs called holding up the new kitten he’d bought her. She paused and reached out to touch it bringing a smile to the blond man’s face. He’d learned a lot about caring for a child over the past year but his best way of socializing with his niece was to introduce her to as many new things as possible. He’d become more of a tutor than a parent but the role seemed to suit him and Hiire responded well.

“She’s so adorable,” Sally smiled, leaning back into Wufei’s side.

“When she’s not screaming,” Duo grinned cockily at Zechs, who blushed recalling when he’d said the words.

“I definitely don’t miss that stage,” Wufei chuckled, sipping his after dinner wine.

“Stick around,” Quatre smiled. “She’ll be cutting that other tooth soon,” he promised.

“That reminds me,” Duo said, looking at his husband. “Remind me to pick up some more teething ointment.” Hiiro nodded, still grinning like a loon. He really loved the way his lover looked with the baby in his arms.

“Warn us,” Wufei smiled. “We’ll skip that month,” he laughed lightly.

“Aw, come on,” Sally chided, poking him in the side as she grinned sidelong at him. “You’ll need to get used to it sometime,” she laughed. “It’ll be good practice.”

“For what?” Wufei replied, sipping his wine again.

“For when we have kids,” she laughed but he froze and turned white as a sheet.

Duo slowed his playful bouncing and Hiiro’s expression had gotten caught in time while Quatre and Trowa did their best not to look anyone straight in the eyes and Zechs just looked around at them all blankly. “What?” Sally chuckled, feeling the odd discomfort in the room all of a sudden.

“You never mentioned you’d like to have kids,” Wufei told her, his gaze locking on Duo’s eyes for a long moment.

“Well, yeah, of course,” she replied, sounding as uncomfortable all of a sudden as everyone else looked before she added in a very uncertain tone, “Don’t you?”

The silence was stifling until Duo suddenly broke it with a well placed, “Well, I think its time for you to go to bed,” he said, tweaking Hiire’s nose before standing. “Wufei, would you mind helping me put her down?” he smiled and the Chinese boy was by his side before anyone could blink, following him out of the room. The remaining group sat there for a long moment as Sally stared after them before Quatre offered the relief of a complete change of subject.

“I’ve never even thought about having kids!” Wufei hissed as Duo changed Hiire into her pajamas. “Why would she just assume? I mean ... we never talked about it!”

“It’s what most people do,” Duo replied evenly as the baby played happily with his braid.

“Yeah, but don’t you have to plan for things like that?” the raven haired boy sighed. “You know, with you guys I just never had to think about things like that,” he said gazing at Hiire as she lay there trying to decide if hair tasted good or not. Apparently, it didn’t and he couldn’t help but smile at her disdainful expression.

“You’re not with us anymore,” Duo said softly, picking her up and leaving Wufei with a somber frown as he went to place her in the crib he’d bought because of her frequent visits.

“You’re really good with her,” Wufei said after a time. Duo had been tucking her in with a bottle, his expression as soft and loving as any mother’s ever had been. It gave him the visage of an angelic host, neither male nor female, come to care for the helpless child. “To bad you can’t have my kids,” Wufei said before he really thought about it. It was only Duo’s instant tensing that alerted him to the depth of what he’d just said but he couldn’t manage anything more before he fled the room.
