"As Luck Would Have It "

Ch 10

He had never known a more grueling flight. The air was stale and hot, the food he had no appetite to eat smelled rank and foul, even the whisky in the glass Quatre had pushed into his hand made his stomach crawl and turn. He tried to force another sip, his mind blankly obeying his blond friend’s soothing advice but it just made him ill. He couldn’t eat; he couldn’t sleep without being ripped awake by some hellish nightmare that left him in cold sweats. Apparently, he couldn’t get drunk either. All he knew was that suddenly his life held no joy, no reason and no light anymore. He was dimly aware of the others talking to him, explaining that it had happened during the third match. There had been a malfunction half way through. If it hadn’t been for Duo’s quick thinking and selfless actions Zechs would’ve been buried with his ruined Tallgeese. The new operating system had failed... an explosion… Deathscythe had been lost and the most terrifying word he’d ever heard in his life.

Coma.

Duo had sustained a head injury and though he appeared to be remarkably unscathed otherwise he had not awakened since. There was bruising, burns and lacerations but nothing that wouldn’t heal in time. The doctors really had no explanation for his continued slumber. Hiiro was mostly numb by the time they stepped off the plane, his movements mechanical and measured to get him from point A to point B. He moved through the thick cloud of surrealism that surrounded him, the baggage counter, a taxi ride, the meaningless landscape of a city and then the long, horribly white halls of a hospital. A doctor, a nurse, Quatre’s worried tone and then his entire purpose of being came into focus as his vision narrowed on the silently sleeping form that was his singular reason for life.

“Hiiro?” he heard Quatre’s voice but it seemed a lifetime away. All sound was slowly being drowned out as he became intensely aware of his own breath and the thunderously slow beating of his heart. He’d known but he had not been prepared. It wasn’t the huge, purplish/black bruise that covered half of his face or the IV’s or monitors or Wufei’s exhausted, careworn expression but the absolute lack of animation in his usually vibrant husband that knocked him totally and completely out of sync. He was mutely aware of the people around him.

“…shock..”

“...bring a blanket…”

“...didn’t any one warn him?!”

He spared Wufei an affectionate touch to the cheek as he forced his feet to move. A nurse’s attempt to guide him to a chair was gently deflected by the Chinese boy; her heated objections firmly rejected as he crawled in beside his silent lover and gathered his limp body into his arms.

“He can’t do that!” the nurse insisted which ended up getting her ejected from the room entirely.

The others gathered in close, Quatre fussing over the sheet until it covered them both as Hiiro kissed Duo’s unresponsive lips gently, the single tear that had escaped his eye falling to splash against his husband’s battered face. They stayed until the night had almost gone and finally, mercifully, the tears abandoned the Japanese boy long enough for him to fall asleep then Quatre insisted on taking Wufei to a hotel for some well needed rest.

Over the next two days the only time Hiiro was separated from Duo’s side was when they were performing some test that required his absence. Quatre had tried to coax him to the hotel until his insistence had become more like nagging and Trowa had put a stop to it. After all the tests, cat scans and consultations they still had no idea why Duo wouldn’t wake up.

He lay at Duo’s side dozing softly. A cot had been brought in but the only hope he had of actually resting was when he could feel the steady beating of his lover’s heart. He was so tired. Even Wufei had advised him to take the sedative the doctors kept offering him but he couldn’t cope with the possibility that he might be passed out when Duo awoke.

It was quiet save for the ceaseless motion of the ward. The monitors had been removed since Duo was functioning on his own. He just wouldn’t wake up. The one IV of saline that was still attached to his arm did little to hamper Hiiro’s need to be by his side. He heard the door when it opened and shut though other than this he was uncertain as he was as close to sleep as he got these days.

“Hiiro?” came a soft voice. He knew that voice, its familiarity making him curious enough to rise from his troubled slumber.

“Hiiro?” she called again and he cracked one bleary, blue eye open to see the smiling face of his childhood friend.

“Relena?” he croaked through a dry, hoarse throat.

“Hi,” she smiled, seeming relieved that he knew her name.

“What’re you doing here?” he asked groggily.

In the year after Hiiro’s marriage to Duo, Relena had managed to also find a mate and marry. Hiiro had been happy to hear it until he learned it was due to an unexpected pregnancy then, several months later the man had disappeared from her life, leaving her with a newborn child with dark, tight, honey blond curls and the striking brown/black eyes of her Grecian father. Hiiro recalled seeing the child’s picture in the paper after her birth and he and Duo talking about what a beautiful baby she was.

“How is he?” she asked, casting a compassionate gaze upon his sleeping husband. Hiiro looked down at him but didn’t answer. He really didn’t know the answer. “I’m so sorry,” she went on, stepping up closer. Again he had no response. “Have you eaten at all?” she asked after a time.

“I’m all right,” he replied, slipping out of the bed to stretch his cramping legs.

“Well you look horrible,” she smiled. “Can’t you sleep at all?” she asked kindly.

Again he had no reply.

“Want to get a cup of coffee?”

“No.”

Her expression fell back into one of deepest concern. “Quatre said you haven’t left this room since you got here,” she told him. “You should get away from all this for a little…”

“No.” he repeated.

“Hiiro really... it’s not healthy...”

“What did you come here for?” he cut her off, causing her expression to fade into one of shocked hurt.

“I... just wanted to help,” she told him looking injured by his words.

“There’s nothing you can do,” he told her a bit more kindly. Perhaps she had learned something from her trials after all.

“Hiiro,” she said, stepping a little closer to him. “I just… I want you to understand I’m here if you need me,” she told him. “We’ve known each other a long time,” she smiled, trying to gain his attention with an expectant look but he never took his eyes from Duo’s still form. She sighed. “I’m really sorry,” she told him again. “I can’t stand to see you in pain,” she said, turning her gaze to Duo as well.

Hiiro couldn’t help it; the hopelessness that had threatened to consume him swelled up and gripped him so hard it wrenched a small tear from the corner of his eye.

“Oh, Hiiro,” she gasped as she flung her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. He hugged back, needing some sort of human compassion in that moment so badly even she would do. She clung to him desperately for a very long moment before he became uncomfortable with it and went to push her back, the odd sensation of her lips grazing over his ear sending an instant and violent wave of pure rage through him as he slung her halfway across the room and stood glaring at her hatefully.

“Hiiro, please,” she suddenly sobbed. “I still love you,” she told him. “I can’t help it!” she snapped, all but stomping her foot in frustration. “Don’t you see!” she pleaded, daring to come closer again. “We can be together now...”

“Get out.”

Hiiro’s hand froze in midair never connecting with the girl’s fragile head at the soft sound. Had he really heard that?”

“Get out... before he kills you.”

He spun, looking desperately at the bed but Duo didn’t seem to have changed at all. Was he dreaming? No, Relena was gaping as well.

“Duo?” he questioned his own sanity, his heart just about exploded when the quite boy’s lips curled up. “Say something,” he begged, the tears already streaming down his face as he rushed over.

“Goodbye, Relena.”

“Duo!” he gasped, falling on him and kissing him like crazy. The girl took the hint, gathering what was left of her broken pride and exiting unnoticed and unremembered as Hiiro reminded himself just how sweet his lover’s kiss could be.

“Gods! I love you,” Hiiro told him, kissing him again. “I love you so much,” another kiss.

“Hiiro…”

“I thought I’d lost you,” another kiss, then one to his eye, then his temple and cheek…

“Hii…” another on the sweet lips he thought might never respond again. “Ow,” Duo finally resorted to a single syllable.

“Oh, damn!” Hiiro suddenly exclaimed. “Sorry... sorry,” he told him, releasing his damaged head but the kisses refused to be tamed and only moved to his hands as his Japanese lover picked them up and covered them in the overflowing emotion as well.

“How long?” Duo asked.

“Going on three days,” Hiiro grinned, sitting down beside him.

Duo’s eyes slipped shut again and for a moment Hiiro’s heart stopped but then he took a deep breath and opened them again before he said softly “Damn… I’m so sorry.”

Hiiro understood his words and didn’t belittle them by refusing to accept the apology. “Don’t you ever do that again,” he told him instead, making him smile again though it obviously hurt so it didn’t last. It was enough to make Hiiro feel like he could blast off though.

“How’s Wufei?”

“Oh, shit!” Hiiro suddenly gasped, diving for the phone. This time Duo actually laughed even if it was accompanied by a groan of pain. A moment later…

“Wufei?!”

“He’s awake!?”

Duo heard the Chinese boy’s voice clearly shouting out from the receiver.

“Yes!” Hiiro confirmed, holding the phone up to Duo’s ear.

“Hey, Diamond Eyes,” Duo said using the secret pet name he’d given the boy long ago and smiling again as a loud whoop sounded over the phone. Quatre and Trowa’s voices were heard then, it sounded like they were all fighting over the phone which made both Hiiro and Duo laugh and, in Duo’s case, groan in pain before…

“We’re on our way!” came across loud and clear and the line went dead.

Once the mirth had faded away Hiiro sat stroking Duo’s hand and filled him in on the events since his injury. Zechs had been to visit several times, they figured Quatre was probably on the phone calling everyone they knew and telling them the news so they didn’t bother. The doctors had kept it to as few people as possible considering the circumstances but they thought that now the restrictions would probably be lifted and they were right. There was a steady influx of happy friends and relieved admirers over the next few days. Soon he was up walking; the bruising on his face fading to a light greenish color instead of the sickly purplish/black and Hiiro found out that a hospital bed had lots of cool little buttons that change it into lots of interesting positions. He was very seriously thinking of putting one in their bedroom.

Wufei had spent the afternoon with them once but that had almost gotten them thrown out early when one of the staff overheard their ... activities and called security. They’d just narrowly evaded being arrested on that one but the entire episode had become a joke the day afterwards.

Hiiro had wasted no time confessing what had happened between him, Quatre and Trowa. The idea that he’d been romping playfully in bed with the two boys while Duo was being injured near to death and he’d never even gotten the chance to explain had just about eaten a hole through his soul. Duo had reacted much the way he’d expected him to though he had way more questions about Quatre than Hiiro would’ve expected. The Japanese boy answered them all in excruciating detail as penance for his sin. Hiiro figured Duo must have been a little threatened by his having had another submissive spirit beneath him but by the time they got to the part where Quatre was sandwiched between he and Trowa for the fourth time they lost interest in the story and ended up finding out what that little dial under the bed was for.

Soon, Duo was released and they were allowed to go home. Wufei had called in their resignations from the hospital the moment he and Duo had a moment to talk about it and agreed they’d had enough. Nothing was worth losing any one of them. Quatre had offered to foot the bill for a long vacation on a beach in Tahiti which not a single one of them could find a reason to turn down so a week after their return home they were stepping on a plane headed for the sunny shores and some well deserved and much needed R&R.

Hiiro looked at his longhaired lover’s beautiful face, all signs of the ugly bruise faded away to be replaced once again by the healthy glow of his tanned skin and kissed him, Wufei’s hand slipping over to grip the longhaired boy’s thigh comfortably as they settled into their seats. Trowa leaned his seat back until it was laying in Hiiro’s lap and he could grin up at him with Quatre tucked neatly under his arm grinning as well and all Hiiro could do was smile knowing deep in his heart he was the single luckiest man that had ever walked the planet.

**

“Duo.”

“Hmm?”

“This is not the... nn… time,” Wufei groaned, laying the plate in his hand in the sink so he wouldn’t drop it as Duo expertly worked that little spot on the back of his neck that he knew would drive him nuts.

“Why not?” Duo whispered, moving slowly along, down the spine, between the finely sculpted shoulder blades, dragging the flimsy collar of the tank top with him as he descended.

“We’re not... alone,” the raven haired boy moaned softly, gripping the counter to steady his ever weakening resolve.

“They’re asleep on a blanket in the back yard,” Duo reminded him as his long fingered hands slipped gracefully around the Chinese boy’s thin hips, along the sumptuous bone structure … down the well toned stomach…

“Not... here... shouldn’t...”

Hiiro sniggered into his tea cup at the raven haired boy’s inability to articulate a full sentence. Truth be told, he was aching in more places than one to go over and help his longhaired husband rock their Chinese mate’s world but it was so much fun watching Duo drive him nuts he was holding back. It had been awhile since Quatre and Trowa had invited them all on one of their little vacation get togethers. Last year’s trip to Tahiti had ended up costing them six weeks of their lives and was, as Hiiro recalled, a wonderful price to pay. The elation of Duo’s awakening coupled with the new found revelation that Trowa could actually relax and enjoy himself with Hiiro and Quatre had made for one very nice little visit. Oddly enough Duo’s doctor, Sally Po, who was the main physician for all the Gundam pilots in the game, had shown up as well which worked out really well because she spent a lot of time doting over Duo to see that he remained healthy and pumping Hiiro full of vitamins that he still found himself taking because, in her opinion, he looked depleted in some way. He wasn’t about to tell her why but the nutritional advice and vitamin therapy had helped him get through the single most erotic six weeks of his life.

Trowa had proven insatiable at first, even after their return. Hiiro would quite often find him in the oddest places in the hope that they might steal a moment or two together but over time things began to settle and he returned whole heartedly to his husband’s bed. Quatre’s patience had paid off in the end, as Hiiro had known from the beginning it would. There were still those times when the taller boy would appear or Hiiro found himself on the phone asking for his company. They even made it a point to include Quatre from time to time though Trowa still wasn’t too keen on over indulging in this area. Hiiro’s relationship with Duo was as strong as ever and he silently thanked Sally on a regular basis for her tutelage since, for one reason or another, he had been putting in some overtime where Duo was concerned. This was actually the fist time in awhile that Wufei was with them in a situation that might lead to something less platonic than a game of poker.

He chuckled to himself again as Wufei made a half hearted attempt to escape that only ended up getting him pinned to the counter. His argument this time was the fact that Quatre had decided to invite Zechs and he had, in his need for emotional support on the subject, brought along his baby niece. After Duo’s recovery and Hiiro’s second rejection Relena had become ever more detached from the family and in the end all but abandoned the child to her brother’s care and from what they’d seen so far, he was completely lost as to what in the hell he was supposed to do. They had fallen asleep in the grass after lunch together mostly due to the fact that Zechs had been up most of the night unable to get the child to go to sleep. However, whereas Hiiro had to agree the kitchen was probably an unacceptable place to have a three way romp under the circumstances, he wasn’t about to pass up the chance to be with them after not having any success over the past few weeks. Well, they were asleep, and Quatre and Trowa had gone out… soooo

He stood leaving his tea to its fate and went to see if he could maybe warm up Duo’s backside for him. It was such a fine little backside and since his front was busy ripping the ability to reason from Wufei’s mind he thought perhaps he could settle for this. However, just about the time he managed to get a really juicy, deep throated moan from his longhaired lover the sultry heat slowly leaked out of the encounter as they all stilled at the sound of a baby’s cry.

“Shit,” Duo sighed heavily, refusing to move from the warmth he’d found between them but they all knew he wouldn’t be able to stand it. There was something about a baby’s cry that set the longhaired boy’s tail bone to vibrating until he had no other choice but to go and make it cease.

“I need to make a run to the auto parts store anyway,” Wufei said, slipping out of the tangle.

“Geez!” Duo suddenly rasped, turning on his heel to go find a way to make it stop. They just chuckled and watched him go. He definitely had a soft spot for the little ones.

“Fei,” Hiiro said before the Chinese boy could make it out the door behind him. “Why didn’t you just have Trowa stop while they were out?”

“Didn’t think about it till just now,” Wufei replied casually. “You need anything while I’m out?” he asked, searching in his pocket for his keys.

“No,” Hiiro replied, then he was gone.
