"Groupie"

Ch 3

The restaurant had been cleared of any other patrons and I took note of the security force that stood at the back and front doors but that seemed normal considering who they were. The staff was necessary though and I was amused by the starry eyed condition of our waitress when she brought some water for us. Everyone else was already eating though Wufei looked more grumpy than usual and was sort of just pushing his rice around on his plate.

“The new number went over well,” Zechs commented to Hiiro and my heart jumped at the thought that he meant my piece. “We should try it again in Colorado. If it’s well received we’ll put it on the next album.”

“It’s not finished,” Hiiro replied opening a menu for us to share.

Zechs considered him thoughtfully for a moment in which I got sort of nervous then turned his attention to the doting waitress who just about creamed her jeans when he smiled and flashed her a comely look. He was pretty much finished eating but I was still a little shocked when he stood and offered her his hand. She took it without being able to close her mouth and followed him numbly into the back where he guided her into the toilet and Wufei suddenly pushed his plate away and sat staring angrily out the window.

“He’s got the hots for Zechs,” Hiiro informed me when I questioned him with a glance then laughed when a napkin bounced off his head.

“Why aren’t you with him then?” I asked recalling a comment Zechs had made regarding his interest in such a union.

“I’m not interested in becoming another notch in his pole,” Wufei grumbled but from the sound of it his interest was whole and well.

Still, considering Zechs appetite for young women I could see why he might be reluctant. Then a thought crossed my mind and I paused in nibbling the toast I’d stolen from Zechs plate. “Maybe he wouldn’t need them if he had you.”

He glared at me and I saw Hiiro slow to an almost stand still but his eyes never shifted then another waitress showed up to take our order and the whole thing was forgotten until Zechs showed back up looking flushed and happy until he got a look at the reprimand in all our eyes.

“What?” he inquired obliviously and I had to just shake my head because there was no way he didn’t know how his behavior was affecting Wufei.

We got a hotel after dinner and I was pleased to discover Hiiro had booked us a separate room. I hadn’t slept much but I wasn’t going to miss a single moment of being with him so I lured him into the shower where he tried to put me through the wall he did me so hard. It was wonderful but didn’t last long enough. I wanted him again before my feet hit the floor but he was more interested in taking down my hair and washing it. It was so strange but I loved it then he wrapped me up in about ten towels and fussed over me for awhile. He’d set his laptop up to play music but it wasn’t the hard rock his band played. It was soft and sweet and went perfectly with the slow attention he started to show my neck later in the evening.

I still couldn’t work up to questioning him about anything because I was afraid he’d kick me out early so I just let him have his way. It was a good way and ended with me screaming his name in a heated passion several times over so it worked for me. I couldn’t believe his recovery rate, he just never seemed to get enough but the time for us to part was fast approaching so I soaked up everything he was willing to give. By the time he finally slowed down I was exhausted and sore as hell but there was a smile on my face and a song in my heart when I drifted off to sleep.

I woke to the sound of my song being strummed lazily along strings that felt as if they were directly attached to my heart. When I opened my eyes he was sitting in a chair beside the bed with one foot propped on it, his guitar in his lap while he quietly played. It was the sweetest moment of my life so I lay still and just listened to him bring life to the rhythm of my heart until he noticed I was awake and offered me a smile.

“It’s a nice tune,” he praised plucking it out a little more firmly. “Did you write it?”

“I wrote it for you,” I confessed unable to wipe the dopy grin from my lips.

He played it over a couple of times then slowed again and asked, “Where’s the rest of it?”

I sat up and got a thrill out of how his eyes followed the movement of my body before I explained, “That’s it. All it needs now is you.”

He flashed me this little grin that got me hard in about two seconds then played the tune again only this time it was embellished with nuances that were so cleanly Hiiro it took my breath away. I was staring at him completely dumbfounded that it was even the same song when he set his guitar aside and kneeled on the bed beside me. I felt the fabric of space and time fluctuate when he kissed me and sank beneath him like the sand under a rising tide where he loved me until I thought I’d loose my mind. It became clear to me while he held me in the afterglow. There was just no way I was ever going to be able to live without him anymore but I had no idea how to secure my place at his side.

“…never should have listened to you in the first place!” Wufei was growling when we stepped out of the elevator the next morning.

“You know the deal,” Zechs calmly replied offering the bellhop an apologetic look while he tipped him and sent him on his way.

“Bye!” I heard a young woman sing and looked to the door to see her and two other scantily clad girls giggling madly while they stumbled out the door. “Call us!”

From the way Wufei glared I got the feeling the girls must’ve kept Zechs company during the night but he didn’t say anything more before huffing and striding outside toward the bus.

“Why do you hurt him?” I asked though I knew it wasn’t really any of my business. He seemed like a nice guy though and I didn’t get why Zechs felt he needed to play with him like that.

“He’s the one that won’t give it up,” he reasoned walking beside us out the door.

“Can you blame him?” I snorted tucking into Hiiro’s side a little closer when he put his arm around me. “You pop it in anyone that’ll lie down long enough and it’s bound to unsettle him isn’t it?”

He stopped when we rounded the bus and turned indignant eyes on me while he reminded me, “Tomorrow you’ll be on a plane back to Georgia and Relena will be hanging off that arm.” I felt Hiiro tense but didn’t know what to do about it. “So don’t get righteous with me when the only reason you’re here is to play the dipping hole for awhile.”

My jaw hit the ground almost as fast as he did when Hiiro hauled off and punched him dead in the face. He didn’t give me time to gape when he dragged me aboard leaving him laying unconscious in the parking lot for the astounded roadies to deal with.

Wufei seemed just pissy enough not to question what happened seeming to take the opinion he deserved it for whatever reason and soon he was tucked into the little bed in the back and we were on the road again.

“That’s different than last time,” Wufei commented awhile later when Hiiro pulled out his guitar and started working on the piece we’d written together.

“Hn,” he grunted and I smiled at the way Wufei’s brow knit in frustration.

The tune went around a couple of times before Wufei started taping out a rhythm and Hiiro put a little chutzpa in it that made it sound like a finished song. They appeared to be having fun with it while I swayed and snapped my fingers grinning to high heaven then everything shifted when we heard Zechs voice rise up in the back. There hadn’t been any lyrics to the song the last time so I was stunned that he could come up with something so spontaneously but the words were solid and true. They spoke of love and longing, self sacrifice and the willful spirit of a heart bound by unbreakable chains. It was exquisite and I understood for the first time why people called him a master lyricist. Just from hearing the melody he’d picked up on exactly what I wanted to say and I couldn’t take my eyes off of Hiiro through the entire song. He leaned over and kissed me while Zechs dragged himself from the bed to a seat behind Wufei where he plopped down and leaned his head back to close his eyes but I didn’t get what was actually happening until Wufei broke the uncomfortable silence.

“Why won’t you let me love you?” he asked in this broken tone that whispered of unshed tears and I suddenly noticed that Zechs was shaking like a leaf.

His tone betrayed nothing of his apparent nervousness when he evenly intoned, “All you have to do is say the word.”

I could see the difficulty of Wufei’s decision in the depth of the creases on his brow and felt it in the seat of my pants when he choked out a tight, “Yes.”

Zechs took a very deep breath before he rose up and offered him his hand and I swear Wufei was trembling when he took it but he refused to look at either one of us then Hiiro attacked me the moment the curtain closed behind them taking my mind off anything but him. He banged me hard that first time then spent the better part of the day rocking me slowly until I finally went insane. I forgot everything, his friends, the bus and how close we were to Colorado until Zechs finally emerged from the back with a happy grin and the silliest look on his face and I laughed out loud from the crick of Hiiro’s arm when he stumbled by and evenly intoned…

“You may keep him.”

Hiiro chuckled along while Zechs fished in a cooler that perpetually sat near Wufei’s favorite seat coming up with a can of tea before returning to the rear of the bus. When he pulled the curtain open Wufei looked like he’d been hit by a train but that didn’t surprise us so much. We’d heard most of what went on which was one reason my ass was still burning. He looked happy though so it was all good.

“Let’s try that song again,” Zechs suggested after a time in which Wufei’s eyes stopped rattling around in his head so they crawled out and got to work.

I sat and listened keeping time by snapping my fingers or clapping my hands and was amazed that Zechs recalled the words he’d sung that morning. He never missed a beat which was remarkable considering they’d only just put the tune together.

“How do you remember the words so easily?” I asked smiling on a pure and natural high.

“He’s a genius,” Wufei smiled settling in his lap. “He never forgets anything he sings.”

“Oh,” I nodded cuddling into Hiiro’s side. “I’m like that with music.”

“You play?” Zechs inquired skeptically.

Hiiro didn’t bother to move or stop stroking his fingers along my temple when he explained, “He wrote that song.”

“You?!” Wufei gasped and I blushed appropriately.

“I put down the notes,” I admitted then turned an adoring gaze on Hiiro. “But Hiiro brought it to life.”

“And you gave it a voice,” Wufei smiled pecking Zechs on the nose.

“You’re the heartbeat,” Zechs thrummed low and throaty while he drew him in and chewed on his neck.

I laughed and couldn’t help but comment, “You should have given in a long time ago.”

I didn’t get why they laughed anymore than I understood why Wufei suddenly turned red until Zechs enlightened me. “He’s a virgin.”

“Was,” Hiiro chuckled.

I was stunned. “No wonder you were holding out,” I laughed along.

“He’s older,” Wufei defended sulkily. “And vastly more experienced. I was only being cautious.”

“You have nothing to fear from me,” Zechs swore then kissed him in a way that made it no surprise when he stood and carried him to the back again.

“You have no idea how long that’s been going on,” Hiiro snickered tucking me on his lap. “I thought he’d never give it up but then…you came along,” he smiled touching my face gently and my eyes shifted shyly.

“I still don’t get it but I’m glad they worked it out,” I shrugged.

“Wufei’s young,” Hiiro explained. “I guess he just didn’t want to get used but after about a year of chasing him around with no luck Zechs just gave up and started popping it in anyone that’d be still long enough. I think he was trying to get a rise out of him because he was obviously in love but he wouldn’t give in.”

“How long have they known each other?” I wondered.

“Over two years,” he replied resting his hands on my hips and I was acutely aware of the strength in his fingertips. “I’ve been trying to kick some sense into them forever but it took you less than a day to straighten them out.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I argued uncomfortable with the praise. He laughed and pulled me down to hug me but my mind was suddenly playing around the fact that the evening was coming fast and we’d soon be at our destination. “Did he mean what he said?” I asked softly not daring to really believe.

“Hn?” he hummed stroking my hair contentedly.

“About…keeping me.”

He stalled and my heart started to beat very fast when he pushed me back but the look in his eyes was so soft and reassuring I didn’t hyperventilate. He just looked at me for a long moment then his hand came to cup my face and he asked, “Is that what you really want?” I nodded instantly and he laughed while he wrapped me back up and held me tight. “After tonight,” he whispered in my ear, “I’m never going to let you go.”

I’d never known that sort of peace and contentment. All my life I’d struggled to survive doing whatever I could to make my dreams come true but I never dared believe I’d be blessed with such bounty. I’d worked so hard at my skill but never got a break, pushed until I felt like I would drop but still couldn’t earn a decent living and fended off so many guys that thought to add me to their collection but none of it mattered anymore. As long as I had him there just wasn’t anything else I couldn’t manage without.

It was almost comical when we landed in Colorado and Zechs completely ignored the raging groupies that were clamoring for his attention. I’d never seen an expression like the one that fixed itself to Wufei’s face but he just kept gawking like he couldn’t believe it each time a young maiden was turned away. I guess Zechs was a man of his word and once Wufei gave in there wasn’t a pair of pretty eyes on the planet that could turn his head. We were ushered backstage by a group of large men with mic’s attached to their faces and big bulges under their arms but before we made it to the dressing room Zechs sidestepped between me and Hiiro forcing me to slow while he was pushed on ahead. The next thing I knew he was shoving me in a side room and two of the security guards had a hold of me.

“Sorry, Duo,” he offered quickly then nodded to the men and disappeared.

“Wait!” I exclaimed trying desperately to break free while they dragged me toward the exit. Did they intend to toss me out into the street? Just like that? I’d be yesterday’s news? But that’s not what Hiiro wanted! “No!” I growled stomping on ones foot then jacking the others jaw which gave me just enough time to bolt.

I headed straight for Hiiro’s dressing room and had to dodge several more guards on the way but then I saw him fighting his way into the hall.

“HIIRO!” I shouted while my heart raced but my need to reach him doubled when he saw me and started barreling his way toward me.

I slammed into him with Earth shattering force and held on for dear life while he wrapped me up tight and glared death and damnation at Zechs who was standing looking entirely defeated in the hallway beside a young blonde girl with angry blue eyes.

I knew he was trying to hide me from her but there was no way I was letting go. It was hard enough just to let him back away but he held my hand tightly so I wasn’t cut off while he led us back down the hall and we all filed into the dressing room together. Relena looked seriously pissed while Zechs flopped dejectedly into a large chair and Wufei glared grumpily from a stool along one wall.

“I believe an explanation is in order,” Relena snipped folding her arms angrily while she glared at where our hands were still clasped.

“It doesn’t matter,” Hiiro replied. “I’m tired of this game.”

“Game?” she scoffed. “Would that be the ‘game’ where I own the rights to ninety percent of your music?”

My stomach fell when I realized she was blackmailing him and suddenly I wanted to ring her scrawny, little neck.

“What’s she talking about?” I inquired of Hiiro.

“Zechs needed money to get us off the ground,” he explained. “So he borrowed it from his sister…”

“Sister?” I gasped looking the smug girl over.

“Which means I have the right to put an end to this entire affair,” she snipped.

“Not after tonight,” Wufei interjected.

“We’ll make enough on this gig to pay off the loan,” Zechs concurred making my chest swell with hope.

She looked like her head might explode for a moment then turned as if to leave so no one saw it coming when she kicked a stack of amp’s beside us and buried us in them.

“Hiiro?!” I gasped pushing the heavy equipment off but he was grimacing and holding his left wrist while Zechs wrestled his irate sister over by the door. “Is it broken?”

“What!?” Zechs barked dropping Relena on the floor to come investigate. “Nooo, no, no no,” he groaned seeing the dark purple spot already appearing on Hiiro’s wrist. “Not now.”

“Looks like I’ll hold the contract a while longer,” Relena laughed then recoiled when Wufei slapped her resoundingly across the face. She didn’t dare retaliate when she came back around and saw the fury in his black eyes choosing to make a hasty exit instead.

“Hiiro?” I soothed bracing his arm while Zechs filled a sandwich bag with ice.

“Can you play?” Wufei inquired.

Hiiro flexed his fingers but tears leaked from his eyes while his beautiful face screwed up in pain before he shook his head.

“Damn it!” Zechs growled kicking a wastebasket across the room. “She’ll sell us out for sure!”

“We have until tomorrow,” Wufei reasoned but Zechs was beside himself.

“How’re we supposed to play without him!?” he yelled but went dead silent when Hiiro ground out…

“Duo can play.”

“What?” we all three deadpanned in unison.

“You know his music?” Zechs jumped on the option.

“I…yes,” I stammered feeling so utterly out of my league it was insane. “But there’s no way I could play like Hiiro.”

“You can do it,” Hiiro encouraged using his good arm to reach out and touch me.

“Can you?” Wufei asked hopefully.

I looked into Hiiro’s eyes and suddenly understood our future was dependent upon my answer when I replied, “Yes…I never forget a note.”

“You can play all his songs?” Zechs asked skeptically.

“Nowhere near as well as he does,” I confessed. “But I know the music. It’s sort of the same thing you can do with words,” I explained thanking all the gods in heaven for the talent. “You remember words, I remember notes. I’ve played along to my CD’s tons of times so I should be able to pull it off.”

“You’ll do it,” Hiiro declared pulling me in for a slow kiss and I suddenly felt like I could capture a star if he wanted me too.

“Suit up,” Zechs demanded shoving a bag in my hands before heading for the mirror and I was suddenly in motion getting ready for the biggest performance of my life.

Hiiro loaned me these leather pants I’d seen him wear on occasion but they were too big so they road way low on my hips. They inspired him to chew on my love bone though so I went with them and a black tank. It was obvious no one was going to believe I was Hiiro so they decided to come clean and informed the audience of his injury and subsequent replacement. The crowd wasn’t very pleased with it until I ripped out a lead that set their little hairs on end and sent them into a frenzy of unmitigated chaos.

“Steve Vai,” I grinned at Zechs when he gaped at me.

Then he grinned and Wufei started the lead in and we set the night on fire. I’m nowhere near as good as Hiiro but I managed to hold my own through the set and felt a little more like I belonged with these guys by the time the night was over. The roadies didn’t know what to think when Zechs put the kibosh on letting the groupies in but he made it clear he didn’t mind if they indulged so the party stopped abruptly at our door and Hiiro snapped me up and kissed me madly the moment I stepped through it.

“You’re incredible!” he grinned dancing me around.

“You’re arm,” I reminded him but he was so high he didn’t seem to care.

“Doc said it’s just bruised,” he smiled touching his forehead to mine while he slowly let me ease to the ground. “You saved us,” he breathed bending to worship the corner of my mouth so I couldn’t argue but I did blush.

“I’ll never let you go,” I promised then he kissed me and we heard Zechs and Wufei laughing on the edges of the bubble we’d formed.

The money from that last concert was enough to pay off the loan before it went into default which explained why they’d been pushing so hard to do shows over the past year. Relena had somehow managed to gain ownership of the rights to their music and was threatening to sell them to the highest bidder which would have essentially ruined them unless Hiiro married her. Zechs managed to put the wedding off long enough to ensure the dept would be repaid first and by the time Relena figured it out it was too late. Her only hope of was to make sure they defaulted but it didn’t work out that way.

“What now?” I asked while Hiiro and I lay in our hotel room the next morning waiting for the sweat on our skin to dry.

“We all need a break,” he chuckled pulling me tight.

We’d spent the night talking and making love but I was as uncertain of our path as before. I had a life back in Georgia but I’d give it all up if it meant having to leave him.

“How would you feel about doing some studio work?” I asked hopefully and he cocked his head. “I have a friend,” I enthused encouraged by his interest. “He owns…well lots of things but there’s this little recording studio with the most righteous sound system you’ve ever seen…”

He laid his fingers over my mouth to halt my chatter then cupped my face and kissed me before he asked, “Should we fly or drive?”

“We can walk for all I care!” I exclaimed latching on to kiss him hard.

He laughed at my enthusiasm and informed me we’d drive because Wufei didn’t like to fly then he rolled us over and nailed me so hard I thought he’d crawl right inside me. Zechs and Wufei were all for a little vacation in the hills where we figured they could hide for awhile and recoup and Quatre almost had a coronary when I called him to explain what was about to happen. He has this lover you see, and there are only two things that can make that guy smile. Rock and roll and Quatre tied buck naked to a bed.
