Quatre nodded though he seemed a little weak in the knees and let his lover lead him toward the cockpit where Hiiro and Wufei had run off to find Duo. Duo was frantically calling up screens as Hiiro slipped into the pilot’s chair. ‘What’s wrong?’ he asked then changed his mind when he saw the multitude of ships tailing them on the monitor. ‘Shit,’ he sighed softly, pulling up several more screens and holographic images. ‘Where in the hell’d they come from?!’ ‘Blue balls back there isn’t a damn ambassador, that’s where,’ Duo informed him. ‘That’s Princess Ann, leader of the Ision Regime. Whoever attacked them wants her and I got a feeling your pal Tuberov’s pulling the strings. Shit.’ ‘What?’ ‘Tribarian Battle Cruiser,’ Duo groaned. ‘Damn, they want this chick bad.’ ‘What the hell is she doing out here without an escort?’ Wufei interjected. ‘Getting her ass shot off apparently,’ Duo replied. ‘Damn, where’s Quatre?’ ‘Here,’ the blond replied. ‘Hey, kitten,’ Duo smiled, pulling him down so he could look into his eyes. ‘You got one more in ya?’ Quatre blinked tiredly but smiled and nodded. ‘Damn, you’re fucking incredible,’ Duo breathed, reaching behind him to make an adjustment to the control panel. When he turned back he paused a moment to bask in the sunny smile the comment had put on the blond boy’s face. ‘Listen, I need to make a phone call but there are way too many ears out there. Think you can distract them for a minute for me?’ Quatre looked at the display to see all the little glowing representations of the ships that were hanging back following them. He looked a little green around the gills until Trowa laid his hand on his shoulder, then he sighed and nodded again. ‘I think so.’ ‘Shit, you’re a natural born, god damn, phenomenon,’ Duo snorted, making another small adjustment to his controls. ‘You can do it,’ he praised as if it were never in any doubt. ‘I need a catalyst,’ Quatre said as Duo flipped a switch. There was a sudden burst from the aft engines that filled the night sky with glittering dust wafting out in every direction. ‘Ion particles do?’ Duo smiled. Quatre returned the grin and nodded. ‘K,’ Duo turned back to his comm. ‘Light him up, Trowa,’ he commanded, preparing to open the channel. The tall boy stepped up behind his lover and laid his hands on his hips and his lips next to his ear. A shiver ran through the blond boy as he began to whisper, running his hands up the boy’s sides then back down again. Quatre sighed and leaned back into him, letting himself relax. A moment later the ion particles outside shimmered to life and took off in the direction of the following ships. -*- The captain of the Battleship Lacroff grinned confidently again. He’d been so clever to allow this ignorant ship to rescue the Princess. No need to risk his own ships when some simple-minded do-gooder would to it for him. He’d been quite amused by the creative way they had recovered them, though. He sat back in his chair, smug in his confidence that they would soon overtake the small disk shaped fighter, unaware of the slight dusting of glowering ion particles that was clinging to the hull of his ship. He’d also never noticed just how lovely his communications officer was. He smiled at the woman as she glanced over at him. He was so caught up in the blush in her cheeks he didn’t really notice his weapons officer eyeing the girl at the radar array. He stood up, drawn by the woman’s delicate scent. Why hadn’t he ever noticed it before? She smiled demurely as he stepped up next to her and reached out to touch her shining, black hair. She trembled slightly under the weight of his fingertips completely unaware of the blinking yellow light on her control panel, signaling an encrypted message being sent from the ship they were chasing as he bent slowly to kiss her lips. -*- ‘God bless the power of persuasion,’ Duo whispered, closing the comm. ‘Remind me to buy him a new toy,’ he added, turning to find Quatre asleep in his lover’s arms. ‘Who did you call?’ Hiiro asked. Duo hadn’t used a voice channel for his communication. He’d sent a prepared encrypted message instead. ‘Buddy’o mine,’ Duo replied. ‘We’ve got an hour before they catch us. Maybe more if sweet pea’s spell shakes some sheets loose.’ ‘That’ll put us close to Altron,’ Hiiro observed. ‘Excuse me,’ a feminine voice called from the doorway. Duo started as if someone had poked him with a cattle prod and all but disappeared under the console. Wufei busted up laughing again as Hiiro cocked a brow at him curiously. ‘Will we be arriving soon?’ she asked, her blue tattooed head shining softly in the dim light. Hiiro sighed inwardly. The woman would have been quite beautiful if it wasn’t for the half shaven head. ‘Within the hour,’ Wufei chuckled, ushering the woman out of the cockpit. The moment she was gone Duo climbed back out from under the console and reclaimed his seat. Trowa had followed Wufei out and taken his lover to tuck him in so he could rest, leaving the two boys alone together. ‘What in the hell is wrong with you?’ Hiiro asked, still stunned by his lover’s behavior. ‘She’s creepy,’ Duo cringed as if someone had just walked over his grave. Hiiro shook his head trying to get a grip on that one. ‘Wwwhat?’ he chuckled, not believing what he’d just heard. ‘You know,’ the longhaired boy shivered at the memory. ‘She’s all grabby and shit.’ Hiiro burst out laughing in utter disbelief. ‘Oh, shut up,’ the braided boy growled softly, sinking down in his seat while Hiiro chuckled. He looked so damn cute Hiiro got up and swiveled him around to face him as he knelt down on the floor and leaned in to steal a kiss. ‘A whole hour, huh?’ he asked, slipping his fingers under the waist band of Duo’s pants. ‘You had yours already,’ the braided boy grumped. Hiiro caught the honest discontent in his voice even if he was behaving playfully and backed off. ‘What’s up?’ he asked softly. There was a darkness swirling around in the back of the braided boy’s eyes that he’d missed somehow until now. It frightened him a little. It was something he hadn’t seen in the violet orbs before. Duo was quiet for a long minute then he reached up and brushed his knuckles down Hiiro’s cheek. ‘Have you ever seen a man die?’ he asked softly. Hiiro looked at him for a moment then nodded. He’d been present at many of the executions that took place on Old Earth when criminals had been sentenced to death. Duo smiled but Hiiro could see the doubt in his eyes. ‘There’s nothing quiet like it,’ he went on. ‘Watching the life light wink out... knowing that it was your own hand that flipped the switch.’ Up until that moment Hiiro had all but forgotten the boy in front of him had been labeled Masuta Toorima, Master Thief and Phantom Assassin. ‘How many?’ he asked out of curiosity. Duo snorted. ‘One too few,’ he replied, sighing softly as he pulled Hiiro’s head down onto his chest and held him. It took the prince a moment to figure it out; when he did he looked back up into his lover’s smoky eyes ‘You’re going to kill someone,’ he voiced out loud. Duo sighed again, cupping the right side of his head as he leaned forward. He nodded gently just before he kissed him then said ‘There’s a mark on Altron I need to deal with,’ as he leaned back again. ‘May I ask why this person deserves to die?’ Hiiro asked. ‘Remember that little girl that called you my hero on Heru?’ Duo asked. Hiiro nodded. ‘He led the raid on her home world,’ Duo explained. ‘Killed her parents... took her older sister to use as a whore in his sex hovels like most of the other young people on the planet.’ Hiiro’s stomach turned. ‘Left her to die with all the other ones too young to bother with,’ the braided boy went on. ‘His time in this realm is over.’ ‘People believe you do this sort of thing for hire,’ Hiiro told him. He was curious now exactly what the truth of this part of Duo’s life was. ‘Oh, there are several bounties on his head.’ the braided boy admitted. ‘But that’s not why your going to hit him,’ the prince said softly, leaning in to kiss his neck reassuringly. Duo was silent for a moment just drinking in the affection before he sighed deeply and confessed, ‘No.’ He let Hiiro root around under his chin for a minute before he finally added, ‘I want you to come with me.’ Hiiro stilled instantly then pulled back. ‘Me?’ he asked a bit unnerved. ‘But... why? I couldn’t possibly keep up with you.’ ‘I’ll teach you,’ Duo told him, touching his face again. Hiiro’s heartbeat was speeding up. ‘Won’t I endanger ...’ he began but Duo silenced him with a kiss. ‘Please.’ Hiiro nodded and let the heat fill him as he kissed him again. They were still kissing slowly when the proximity alarms went off. Hiiro went to pull back but Duo refused to release him as he slapped at the control panel to shut the alarm off. ‘Shouldn’t … we do…something about that,’ Hiiro mumbled through the boy’s lazy kisses. ‘It’s a friggin’ Tribarian Battleship,’ Duo reminded him, sinking back down in his seat. ‘What the hell are we gonna do?’ ‘I’m assuming dying is not top on the list?’ Hiiro asked, pulling back to get a look at the massive ship as it closed on them. ‘That’d make it hard to kill numb nuts when we get to Altron, wouldn’t it?’ the braided boy pointed out as Hiiro slipped back into the pilots seat. ‘Guess we could drop out and play with some of the little ones.’ ‘Shit!’ Hiiro barked as hundreds of smaller fighters suddenly appeared all around them. ‘TROWA!!’ he bellowed. A moment later the other three cannons were online as the boys took their battle stations. ‘What in the hell is that!?’ Wufei’s voice crackled over the comm as the great Battleship suddenly loomed into view as it dropped out of hyperspace. Hiiro was already on the beam cannon laying waste to anything that came within range and setting the leftovers up for the others. A line of the smaller fighters exploded as the beam cannon ripped through the line then suddenly the sky was ominously empty as the mammoth ship’s main weapon came online. ‘Star Fighter. This is the Battleship Lacroff, surrender and prepare to be boarded,’ a woman’s voice called over the comm. ‘Holy shit!’ Wufei shouted just as another gargantuan form shimmered and appeared out of thin air. ‘Tribarian Battleship,’ another woman’s voice broke in. ‘You are in Alturian space. Stand down.’ ‘This does not concern the Alturian government,’ a man replied. ‘This vessel attacked an Ision craft and has taken the crew prisoner. We are within our rights to pursue and rescue.’ ‘This vessel is the personal transport of Ambassador B’lck of Isis and therefore under the protection of the Alturian space force. I repeat. Stand down,’ the woman commanded sternly. It took a minute before the Battleship powered down its weapon. Once it had left the area the second ship hailed them. ‘Duo, you crazy god damn fool!’ the woman growled. ‘Ah, Sally ya know ya love me!’ the braided boy broke in. ‘Thanks for flexin the muscles there, sweet cheeks.’ ‘You’re welcome,’ she huffed defeatedly. ‘You know, contrary to what you think, the Peacemillion is not at your beck and call,’ she sighed. Hiiro could almost hear her sinking down into her captain’s chair. ‘Howard’s going to have my ass for...’ ‘You know Gracy’d kill him if he had your ass,’ Duo cut her off. ‘So’s it true you got that hot Japanese prince with ya?’ she asked playfully. ‘Ask him yourself,’ the braided boy chuckled as Hiiro blushed. The comm was quiet for a long moment before she spoke again. ‘He’s sitting right there, isn’t he?’ ‘Yeppers!’ ‘Sorry bout that Hiiro no Ouji-Sama,’ she offered. ‘No offence intended.’ ‘None taken,’ Hiiro smiled. ‘Yeah, cause he is a hot little number, idn’t he?’ Duo grinned. ‘And you should see him when he’s... OW!!’ Duo rubbed his thigh where Hiiro had pinched him. ‘Oh gods, don’t tell me you two are an item already,’ she groaned. ‘Can’t you leave even one for the rest of us?’ she jibbed as they moved to escort the smaller ship closer to the planet. ‘It’s not my fault you scare ‘em all away,’ Duo replied. ‘You weren’t grousing about me scaring them away five minutes ago,’ she retorted. ‘Fei’s on board,’ he tossed in, grinning at Hiiro like he’d just dangled a fish in a cat’s face. The comm was quiet a moment before she replied. ‘You don’t say?’ Duo laughed as he closed the comm. ‘She’s got a thing for Asian men,’ he told Hiiro as he looked at him curiously, chuckling just because he was glad he hadn’t offered him up as well. Altron was the hub of the Intergalactic Council. The planet was quite literally one huge city several miles in depth. The lower levels were ancient and housed the bulk of the planet’s greenery in massive green houses as the plants couldn’t live aboveground anymore due to pollution and the lack of sunlight. It was a dim, sad world that kind of reminded Hiiro of a bad florescent bulb. They landed on one of the upper level landing pads and prepared to disembark. Hiiro was a little uneasy by the fact that Duo was wearing his cloak again. He seemed like a different creature entirely in the ebony shadow. His very movements were so serpentine it made him seem inhuman. He was wondering to himself how in the hell he was ever going to keep up with him on an assassination attempt when the ramp opened to reveal an entire squadron of troops, their weapons raised and aimed directly at the braided youth beside him. ‘Masuta Toorima,’ a man at the head of the line stated as Duo stood motionless before them, nothing more than a sliver of midnight cutting the wind as it passed him over. ‘You are under arrest.’ ‘He has a full pardon,’ Wufei shouted, standing firmly beside the silent dark, form of his lover and friend. ‘Not for the kidnapping of Princess Ann of the …’ the man’s voice trailed off as the Princess and her companion walked down the ramp. ‘This man saved our lives, Major,’ she told him. ‘He deserves a hero’s welcome and you offer him this?’ she snapped, indicating the line of men still holding their weapons at the ready. The Major’s face fell instantly. ‘Forgive the misunderstanding, your Majesty,’ he begged. ‘We were told that...’ ‘You were misinformed,’ she smiled tolerantly. ‘Now if you don’t mind?’ she added, indicating the men once again. ‘Of course,’ he grinned a bit malevolently as he bowed and the men lowered their arms. She favored him with another tolerant smiled as she allowed her escort to lead her off the landing platform with Duo and his crew in their wake. The man watched every step Duo took with burning eyes. Hiiro could feel the want in his stare. To be the man to bring in the great Masuta Toorima would surly make a man infamous himself. The Major sighed his defeat as they disappeared into the lift then reached up to scratch at something on his neck, gasping softly as he pulled a small slender wire from his stiff collar. Another two inches to the left and he’d have been a dead man. He looked back to the closed lift doors and shivered slightly, silently hoping he never got that chance again. Hiiro kept having to look back to make sure Duo was still there. He was dead quiet and barely seemed to move at all as he followed them. People everywhere stopped to stare and whisper to each other as they moved through the terminal lobby. ‘I’m drawing too much attention,’ Duo’s soft voice said behind the prince. ‘I’ll meet you there.’ Hiiro turned around to speak to him but there was nothing there. He looked left then right and found no trace of him so he fell back into step with the others. They had timed it fairly well. Hiiro had to wonder if Duo didn’t have something to do with that even though he hadn’t really explained why he’d come here to his longhaired lover. Duo just had a way of already knowing things. He was starting to get used to it. They went straight to the Cosmic Council, arriving in time to hear the arguments both Pro and Con in the Gundainium case. It was the first time he’d ever seen Princess Relena Peacecraft of Annon Shugi. He raised one brow when she stepped up to speak. She was quite beautiful, with honey blond hair and big blue eyes that flashed when they met the dark glares of the men on the Tribarian pedestal belying her youthful years. Her manner spoke of good breeding and long experience in the matters of state. She was self assured and strong willed, outspoken and about as determined as they come. It was kind of a pity everything that spilled from her lips was tripe. Her ideas were based in fantasy, her demands one sided and dangerously ill thought out. Disband all armament? Was she completely insane? Why not just lie down and yell ‘come step on me, please’ at the top of their lungs? By the time she was forced off the floor he was convinced the girl must have marshmallows for brains. Hiiro quickly decided the girl’s confidence was more arrogance than self assurance and her youthful appearance actually disguised the heart of an even younger child. How she’d come to be a member of the council was beyond him. The debate was drawing to a close when Hiiro stepped up and told the herald of his presence and demanded a turn to speak. The Tribarian council members sat forward curiously when his name was announced. Relena showed a great deal of interest as well. Hiiro recognized the tall man in the center of the Tribarian pedestal to be Tuberov himself. His stomach turned at the sight of the man that he knew had tortured and killed his mother. This was the man that had almost killed his father, the person solely responsible for the oppression of dozens of worlds. His heart hardened as the anti gravity dais lowered for him to board. ‘Keep your head,’ Duo’s voice suddenly sounded next to his ear. Hiiro barely even jumped, he’d been so intent on memorizing Tuberov’s face. Duo was nothing more than an absence of light in the carriage behind him as they rose to meet the Tribarian council face to face. ‘The Chair recognizes Hiiro no Ouji-sama of Old earth,’ the Chairwoman of the Galactic Council announced. Hiiro made his formal greeting just as he was taught to do. He’d been well trained for this type of confrontation and he planned to use every ounce of that training now. ‘It has come my attention that the continued refinement of the ore Gundainium has led to the oppressive enslavement of at least twenty four planets in this galaxy alone,’ he began, causing a scandalous uproar among the Tribarian section. ‘Surely you don’t mean to hold a peaceful mining system responsible for the acts of a few foolhardy pirates,’ Tuberov chuckled, disarming the claim. Hiiro ignored him. ‘I have also uncovered evidence that the Tribarian government is personally responsible for funding the Kaizuku raids on these systems, resulting in the systematic annihilation and/or enslavement of entire races of people.’ ‘Absurd!’ a man called out from behind Tuberov but the tall man’s eyes simply narrowed and turned icy as he spoke. ‘You dare to accuse us of funding privateers?’ he asked in a deathly soft voice. Hiiro ignored him again. ‘Old Earth will no longer tolerate these grievous and heinous acts,’ he went on. ‘As of this moment all Gundainium mining will cease.’ The statement caused a tumultuous uproar. Hiiro waited for it to calm before he went on. ‘Any facility found to still be mining this ore will be destroyed,’ he went on, leveling his dark blue gaze on Tsuberov as he stood quietly listening. ‘All sanctions and embargoes on the planet Isis will be lifted and any pirating activity from this day forward will be severely punished.’ Now the entire room was thundering with discord. Even Princess Relena was glaring at him. It lasted for a minute or two before a dark figure stepped up from behind Tuberov. The moment his face came into view Hiiro felt a nasty chill run over his flesh. ‘Shit, Hanes,’ Duo hissed behind him. ‘What in the hell’s he doing here?’ ‘It is quite clear,’ Hanes said in an icy drawl as he grinned something of a slimy smile, his white, albino eyes glancing to where Duo’s eyes should have been before he continued. ‘That our good prince has little experience with the Council and does not realize his words are a declaration… of war,’ he said dramatically as his smile widened. Everything went deathly quiet. ‘He’s number one on my hit list,’ Duo whispered. ‘He’s a butcher, Hiiro. I’ve been trying to get close to him for two years.’ ‘I am well aware of the implications of what I’ve said here today,’ Hiiro replied clearly looking them both dead in the eye as he firmly stated, ‘The Eve War has yet to be won.’ ‘Sorry baby, I can’t let him get away,’ Duo whispered just before Hiiro’s world exploded in stars and went black. Their friends gasped from their viewing place as Hiiro’s body slumped into the lift. A shadow zipped from the lift to the Tribarian pedestal before he’d hit the floor. A moment later someone screamed as blood spurted in every direction, then a dark figure dove out into the empty space and disappeared into the shadowy depths of the great Council hall.
