"The Gobanme Star"

Ch 5

The boys all gaped as they followed Duo down the ramp, the hiss of the ship powering down and the swirling gasses and mists that edged in on them trying to find their way past the entryway’s defenses added to the eerie, ominous feeling of the place.

‘Welcome to Shichi Yomi,’ Duo told them as he gazed up at the gates fondly. ‘The seventh level of hell.’

‘So fess up,’ a thin, balding man in a loud shirt and dark sunglasses shouted as he approached. Hiiro recognized the voice as the man Duo had called Howard over the comm. ‘What in the hell are you doing back at death’s door already, boy?’ he growled in a fatherly way as he stopped in front of the braided youth.

‘Heard you had a bowel problem so thought I’d come ream your pipes,’ Duo grinned, slapping his arm against the man’s and gripping his forearm, which Howard mirrored as he smiled.

‘Gracy ain’t gonna like that, boy,’ he chided his friend.

‘She hates you anyway,’ Duo retorted.

‘Who the hell are they?’ Howard asked as they started moving toward the gates.

‘My harem,’ Duo answered, not bothering to glance back as the other four boys fell in behind them though Howard gave an appreciative glance. ‘So, what’s the deal with Helen’s shaft?’ Duo asked as they made their way to the small door in the base of the huge gates.

It turned out Helen was the main volcano that the people of Shichi Yomi used for their life support and main power source for the dome that made life here possible. Without the dome the toxic gasses from the volcanoes would wipe out all life in the sprawling crater city. Hiiro figured out from listening to conversations that this place was actually a haven for those who were cast out of everywhere else in the universe. Refugees from dozens of different worlds that had fallen prey to organizations like the pirates that had attacked them on the way here. A select group of criminals deemed worthy of sanctuary because of their contributions to the whole or the fact that they’d been wrongly accused. Some people seemed to just be running from themselves or their pasts while others were obviously there on business.

Hiiro was a bit taken aback by the presence of several blue headed Isionans that were visiting the outlandish city for some reason. He knew their people to be peaceful and well received by every planet in the known universe. He couldn’t think of any reason they’d be in a place like this.

‘So we go in,’ Duo said casually as he leaned back into Hiiro’s chest. They were all gathered in a large room in the capital building in the center of the city. Speeders whizzed by the large plate glass window outside as Duo and Hiiro sat on the couch. Wufei was on the other end and Trowa and Quatre had taken seats on the tall stools by the bar in the corner. The cityscape outside was full of crimson shadows that swirled in between the tall buildings.

‘Don’t be a fool’ a small dark haired woman that had been introduced to them all as Howard’s part time girlfriend Gracy sneered. ‘Not even you’re that stupid,’ she added hatefully. Hiiro had gotten the idea this woman realllly didn’t care for Duo as she was incapable of speaking to him with any less animosity.

‘She’s right,’ Dawson, a tall, bald, black man they had been told was the chief engineer for the city agreed. ‘The blockage is too deep,’ he rumbled in his deep bass voice as he brought up a holographic display of the affected area.

‘What’s the alternative?’ Duo asked as he reached over and absently stroked Wufei’s neck just below his ear.

‘Move,’ Gracy spit.

‘Anyone else?’ the braided boy smiled patiently.

‘Troy,’ Dawson offered.

‘Troy’s just a baby,’ Duo countered. ‘You wouldn’t even be able to power the shield.’

‘It’s the only other way,’ the tall, black man informed him.

‘Naw,’ Duo sighed, snuggling down into Hiiro’s chest as he laid his legs over Wufei’s lap. ‘I can go in, pop the cork and …’

‘You’re nuts, boy!’ Howard barked in frustration. ‘You have any idea how damn deep that is?’

‘Well duh,’ Duo huffed, rolling his eyes stupidly. ‘It’s only right there on the vid,’ he pointed out. ‘Look,’ he said, standing up and drawing the blaster from his thigh holster and checking the beam. ‘Worse case I get cooked, you go to plan B, Gracy pops the cork on a good bottle of Champagne and everything’s gravy,’ he turned and leveled the weapon at the window, causing half the room to duck and cover, then fired, blowing the entire plate glass rectangle out. Hiiro was on his feet with the others by the time the dead body of a large, sickly, burnt yellowish brown lizard looking creature slid from the wall outside and hung half in/half out of the window as it bled a greenish fluid all over the floor. ‘Would someone please tell me when in the hell this city got infected with lava dogs?’ Duo growled at the men on the floor.

‘You fucking maniac!’ Gracy bellowed at Duo as he pulled Howard from the floor. ‘You could’ve hurt someon…’

‘The blockage rerouted the magma flow through their rookery,’ Dawson interrupted the irate woman. ‘We’ve been sealing all the passages that lead into the city but…’

‘Shit,’ Duo groused, going over to kick the body of the thing loose from the window sill. It hissed as it flopped onto the floor, its blood melting the carpet fibers together. ‘I’m goin’ in,’ he told them, holstering his weapon.

‘I’m going with you,’ Hiiro stated.

‘I don’t need you,’ Duo told him then he turned to Trowa. ‘But I will need you. You in or not?’

‘But I need you,’ Hiiro retorted, taking him by the arm and making him look at him. Duo stared at him a second then smiled and nodded before he turned back to the tall boy. Trowa studied the holograph for a moment, then nodded his acceptance.

‘Count me in,’ Quatre offered, then put his fingers on Trowa’s lips before he could object.

They all looked at Wufei. ‘What?’ the Chinese boy snorted. ‘You’re all fucking crazy if you think I’m going to go crawling around in the belly of an active volcano.’

‘Aww, come on Fei,’ Duo grinned as he led them from the room. ‘I’ll let’cha kill allll the lava dogs we meet,’ he sang temptingly, turning and doing the ‘come here boy’ dance.

Wufei looked at the creature still steaming on the floor then back at the boy beckoning in the door way for a moment before he sprang up and followed them from the room.

‘Yo, Duo!’ a man called from down the hall waving.

‘Parker!’ the braided boy returned. ‘How’s Sheila?’ he asked, gripping the man’s shoulder as he passed by.

‘Gonna pop any day,’ Parker smiled.

‘Well don’t name it after me,’ Duo chided. ‘It wasn’t my fault!’ he yelled back at the chuckling man, then turned back around.

‘Hey, Duo,’ another, younger man smiled as he passed by.

‘Hey, Mark,’ Duo replied. ‘Oh, here,’ he stopped and turned, bouncing off Hiiro’s chest in the process as he handed the young man a slip of paper from his pocket. ‘That’s the number of that little red head you were drooling over last month at the Izenhour,’ he told him, skipping back to the front of the group.

‘You got it?’ the man called after him in shock.

‘Markie... babe,’ Duo retorted in a bad Italian accent, motioning to himself as he walked backwards as if to say ‘look who you’re talking to, idiot’.

Several more people greeted him before they made it out of the building. Dawson had followed them down to the street which is where Duo finally engaged him in conversation.

‘You got the charges I need ready?’ he asked, scanning the street as speeders buzzed by overhead and before them.

‘What? Now?’ Dawson gasped.

‘I’m kinda on a tight schedule here,’ Duo informed him. ‘You know how to drive a K2 speeder?’ he asked Trowa. The tall boy nodded. ‘Good, steal that one over there.’ Trowa only looked him cockeyed a moment before he dragged Quatre off toward it. ‘You got the charges or not?’ he asked as he popped the control panel on the speeder he’d chosen. Wufei was already hot wiring another close by.

‘There are some thermal charges in the Eastman warehouse but...’

‘That’ll do,’ Duo told him.

‘Wait!’ the man pleaded as Duo pulled Hiiro up onto the speeder with him. ‘Duo, this is nuts. You can’t just go in there half cocked like this, its suicide. We need to plan...’

‘You work on the plan.’ Duo grinned. ‘We’ve got a blockage to blow. Ta.’ he said as they lifted into the air with the others trailing behind them and Dawson standing staring after them doing a very good rendition of Hiiro’s gaping fish impression.

Duo led them through the city though he seemed to have no regard for the traffic laws as he darted between lanes and levels. Hiiro chuckled at the people as they grumbled at being cut off or zoomed past at well over the speed limit. Soon Duo chuckled as well.

‘You’re a trip,’ he chortled at the Japanese prince.

‘Me?’ Hiiro snorted. ‘You’re the maniac,’ he accused, wrapping his arms tighter around the slight boy’s body.

‘Yeah,’ Duo grinned ‘But you’re crazy enough to get off on it,’ he said just before they suddenly plummeted ten stories straight down. Hiiro was grinning like a loon when they came to a stop in front of an odd looking building. The other’s weren’t far behind and caught up before they’d finished parking.

‘What’s this?’ Hiiro asked as Duo led him to the shabby looking front door.

‘My house,’ Duo replied, opening the tall double doors.

There was an ominous moment of silence when all heads within the building turned to the front door before Hiiro’s eyes snapped open in pure terror as the inhabitants suddenly rushed them.

‘DUO!’ they chorused as they bowled the young man over. Hiiro’s heart leapt into his throat. He didn’t know what to do. Should he pull them off? There were so damn many! And they were so small and young and god help him they were children! Dozens of children of all ages swarming all over Duo as he lay gasping for breath and laughing his ass off on the front step.

Suddenly the laughing died down and they all stood back and looked around curiously because Duo was gone.

‘HA!’ the braided boy barked from inside the doors, scaring half of them so bad they ran half way down the steps before they realized it was him and darted back up trying to drag him down again. As things started to settle down Duo snatched one of the smaller little girls up and rested her on his hip as another slightly older boy of about six tugged on his braid to get his attention. Duo turned to him and bent down setting the girl on her feet again to listen.

‘Duo?’ the boy asked, looking at Hiiro. ‘Who’s that man with the fish face?’

The braided boy chortled, trying desperately not to bust out laughing as Hiiro snapped his mouth shut. ‘That’s Hiiro.’

‘But you’re our hero,’ the little girl interjected, wiping her eyes sleepily.

Duo smiled and bopped her nose with his finger ‘He’s my hero,’ he winked at the Japanese prince.

‘FATHER MAXWELL!’ the girl wailed, taking Duo by the hand and pulling him into the hall. Hiiro followed in stunned silence as he watched all the kids congregate around the braided boy as if he were the lost messiah. An older man with graying hair, a kind smile and a priest’s robe stepped from a doorway in the back of the hall as the little girl pulled Duo toward him.

‘Father Maxwell!’ she called again, tugging Duo harder, ‘Duo’s back! And… and he brung his hero with him,’ she added, becoming frustrated by Duo’s reluctance to jog along behind her. Wufei, Quatre and Trowa stood back at the door way and sniggered at the look on Hiiro’s face as the old priest chuckled at the child.

‘Welcome home, my boy,’ the priest smiled at Duo as he gripped his shoulder and offered the little girl his hand, freeing the braided boy of her relentless pursuance.

They were all invited for tea and cookies which were served in the old priest’s study, much to Hiiro’s relief. He’d never seen so many children in one place before. It was downright unnerving. It didn’t help that once Duo had properly greeted the old man with a kiss on the cheek he snagged a cookie and promptly sat down in Wufei’s lap.

‘Tell Lidia to lay off the honey,’ he advised the man, tossing the half eaten cookie back on the plate.

Father Maxwell chuckled as he put his tea cup down. Trowa and Quatre sat next to each other on the tattered black leather couch and Hiiro had taken the only other chair which was apparently why Duo had chosen Wufei as the best place to park his ass. The Chinese boy didn’t seem to mind much but it was making it hard to eat his cookie without getting a mouth full of hair.

‘Have you come to stay awhile?’ the priest asked him, seemingly unconcerned with the boy’s questionable behavior.

‘No,’ Duo sighed. ‘Helen’s got a bug up her butt,’ he explained, making Quatre chortle into his tea, spraying half of it all over the floor. Even Trowa smirked. Duo just looked at him like he’d lost his mind or something as he explained, ‘We’re gonna blow it out. I wanted to drop this off just in case we get cooked,’ he said, laying a credit card down on the desk then leaning back into Wufei’s chest making it completely impossible for him to eat his cookie.

Father Maxwell looked at it then picked it up and slipped it into the counter on his desk. His eyes widened considerable when he saw the amount of credits on the card.

Duo smiled a bit sheepishly. ‘Sorry there’s not more,’ he apologized. ‘The heist on Nadon wasn’t as profitable as I’d hoped.’

The old man chuckled ironically. ‘This will fund us for well over five years,’ he informed him but Duo’s face fell.

‘Only five,’ he sighed regretfully. ‘Damn,’ he added softly, relaxing back into Wufei’s chest and laying his head on his shoulder.

‘You do so much for us already,’ the priest began but Duo cut him off.

‘Five years won’t even see Kally through second grade,’ he grumbled dejectedly.

‘You steal for them?’ Quatre asked a little aghast by the idea.

‘He recovers funds,’ the old man corrected.

‘You stole it from the pirates,’ Hiiro gaped at that braided boy as he lifted Wufei’s hand to his mouth and took the cookie from his fingers.

‘I trust Emperor J is well?’ Father Maxwell inquired of Hiiro as the Japanese boy watched Duo turn his head with the cookie in his mouth and begin feeding it to Wufei.

‘He’s... yes,’ Hiiro replied distractedly. ‘He’s fine.’ His head suddenly swiveled around to look at the old priest as he realized what the man had said. ‘You know my father?’

‘Of course,’ the man smiled. ‘He’s a remarkable man,’ he complimented. ‘I see you take after him in many ways. You have his eyes.’

‘Thank you,’ Hiiro replied. He loved and respected his father very much. The man had been badly injured when Hiiro was very young resulting in his partially cybernetic body. Hiiro couldn’t remember the shade of his eyes. It was nice to know. ‘How do you know him?’ he asked, curious about his father’s past. He knew surprisingly little about the man.

The old man glanced briefly at Duo and Wufei who had finished their cookie and moved on to sharing a rather sloppy kiss in its absence before he smiled tolerantly and replied ‘We fought together in the Eve War.’

‘War?’ Hiiro’s head snapped around again. ‘My father fought in a war?’ he asked, astonished.

‘He hadn’t told you?’ the old priest chuckled.

‘No,’ Hiiro replied, once again trying to reform his universe. ‘There was a war?’ he asked, astounded by the news.

The priest chuckled again. ‘Has he sheltered you so much?’ he asked rhetorically. ‘No, perhaps it is better that you didn’t know, after all. The Eve War,’ he repeated. ‘It began on Christmas Eve in the year After Colony 195,’ he explained. ‘You won’t find any record of it any of the history books. The Cosmic Council had all evidence of it erased. There was a dispute between Earth and the deep space mining colonies of the Tribar system. A new substance was discovered that threatened to revolutionize modern weaponry. The hardest substance ever recorded. They called it Gundainium. Earth saw the dangers of refining this new metal and tried to have it banned. Your mother was the leader of that movement,’ he told him, then paused when the boy’s eyes clouded over. ‘She died for the cause,’ the old man confirmed.

Hiiro felt his chest drawing tighter with every word. Was his entire life a lie? He knew of this metal, it was widely used in modern military weapons. He’d been told his mother died in the accident that had maimed his father. His eyes opened wide and he gaped at the man as comprehension dawned.

‘Your father tried to save her,’ the priest went on, confirming the boy’s deduction once again. ‘But I’m afraid he movement died with her.’

Hiiro sat in silence staring blankly at nothing, trying to pull the shattered pieces of his reality back together again. His mother had died a warrior’s death and his father had been maimed trying to save her all for a failed cause. How could he not know of this? How could his father have kept it from him?’

‘Don’t sweat it,’ Duo broke in, relinquishing Wufei’s lips. ‘At least you’ve got a past. Hey, you mind if we catch a quick shower, old man?’ he asked pulling Wufei to his feet. ‘S’posed ta wash your food before ya cook it, right?’ he grinned and winked at Hiiro who in spite of what he’d just heard was chuckling and shaking his head at him.

Quatre and Trowa were offered a room to themselves and left alone. Duo had made it pretty clear they should use the time wisely as it might just be their last as he pulled Wufei down the hall into another of the small, upper story apartments. He was already kissing the Chinese boy when Hiiro stepped into the door way and stopped. He watched for a moment feeling his heart sink slowly; he’d been kind of hoping to have some time with Duo himself. He sighed gently as he started to turn away but Duo grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him into the room as he switched gears effortlessly and kissed the Japanese boy deeply.

‘What the hell are you doing?’ Wufei groused, trying to pull away but Duo wouldn’t let him go.

‘I want you both,’ the long haired boy snorted as if he were stupid as he began unbuttoning Hiiro’s shirt.

Hiiro looked at Wufei a bit alarmed and grasped Duo’s hands to stop him. ‘Geez… are you serious?’ he asked, trying to pull away.

What is this guy’s problem?’ Duo groused in frustration, slapping the blue eyed boy’s hands away as he fought to get to the buttons.

‘Come on,’ Wufei sighed. ‘You know I don’t do guys.’

‘I didn’t ask you to do him,’ the braided boy huffed, rolling his eyes. His grin returned in some small amount when he won the war of the buttons and managed to push Hiiro’s shirt open.

‘Duo!’ Hiiro panted desperately, trying to hold him back. ‘I can hardly stand it when he kisses you,’ he reminded him. ‘Please...’

‘Yeah, well,’ Duo grinned ‘Get over it,’ he advised as he pushed in and kissed the Japanese boy passionately. Hiiro was pushed back onto the bed and lost under a writhing mass of longhaired heat.

‘Duo, please,’ Hiiro pleaded as he felt his heart thunder. ‘I... I can’t... I hate it when he…’ he was sorry he’d opened his mouth suddenly as Duo growled and disappeared. When he sat up the boy was crouching in the corner hugging his knees and staring out the window.

The two Asian boys stared at him for a moment at a loss as to what to say before he began to speak.

‘Five thousand degrees on the surface,’ he said softly. ‘Ten more for every one hundred meters deeper you go. It’ll fry ya like a piece of bacon from a hundred paces,’ he told them as his smoky violet eyes rounded on them. ‘What will you regret?’ he asked softly.

Hiiro felt his heart beat slow as he looked into Duo’s smoldering amethyst eyes. He wanted him, badly and he knew it. But what did Duo want? Was it possible that he just couldn’t choose between them? That he’d regret it no matter which he chose so he’d decided to choose them both? He was still thinking about it when Wufei dropped his shirt as he walked across the room and knelt down in front of Duo.

Hiiro watched as the Chinese boy lifted his chin and kissed him slowly. They might all very well be dead very shortly. He was starting to understand just how petty his insecurities really were. Duo obviously cared for them both and although he bore no true desire for the Chinese boy it wasn’t Wufei that mattered right then. He rose and walked over to them and laid his hand on Duo’s hair, listening to the soft moan it caused in the long haired boy. He smiled knowing it was his touch that had brought him that small joy as Duo pulled back and looked up at him.

‘No regrets,’ he said softly, offering the braided boy his hand.

Duo smiled and took it, allowing himself to be pulled to his feet. Hiiro kissed him gently, then pulled away and allowed him to turn his attention back to Wufei who accepted the affection wholly.

‘How do you want to do this?’ Hiiro asked, leaning in for a taste of the long haired boy’s neck.

‘Well,’ Duo sighed, pulling away and wrapping his arms around Hiiro’s neck. ‘He’s phobic about penetration. What about you?’ he smiled.

Hiiro glanced at Wufei, then kissed him again. ‘Anything,’ he whispered as he pulled Duo down on top of him.

‘Mmmm, yes’ Duo groaned as Wufei kissed his shoulders and neck. ‘Gods,’ he moaned softly. ‘If this is hell, don’t ever send me to heaven,’ he breathed as he kissed Hiiro again.

The prince not only found it surprisingly easy to share his new lover with the raven haired warrior but was mildly shocked that he actually found the experience highly erotic. Duo balanced his affection between them so well he never once felt that odd scratching in his gut that usually happened when Wufei kissed or caressed him. All that mattered was that they were there sharing the experience with Duo and it was what he wanted, anything to see that wonderful expression in his beautiful, violet eyes.

He smiled and pulled them both closer as they lay in the afterglow, Duo on Hiiro’s chest, slightly off to the side and Wufei with his head pillowed on Duo’s back. ‘Thank you,’ Hiiro whispered as he reached down to kiss the long haired boy’s hair affectionately, wiping the damp bangs from his forehead as he looked up curiously.

‘For what?’ Duo asked.

‘Showing me how to truly love someone,’ Hiiro replied, smiling gently.

Duo returned the smile but looked somewhat lost as to what he actually meant as Wufei raised his head and offered the Japanese boy a gentle smile and Hiiro could see in his eyes he understood exactly what he was feeling.
