"The Gobanme Star"

Ch 4

‘Course heading Alpha Omega 12.0294,’ Duo instructed.

He pulled his attention back to his task and keyed in the heading. ‘mAkai System? There’s no populated planets in that galaxy,’ he observed.

‘There’s not s’posed to be,’ Duo sang as he checked his hyper drive calculations.

‘You mean there are actually squatters out there in that mess?’

‘What better place to hide than the seventh level of hell?’ the braided boy replied. ‘You ever been in hyperspace?’

Hiiro nodded adding, ‘Not a lot.’

‘Well Heru is, pardon the pun, hell and back again from here so if were gonna get there while we’re still young we’re gonna hafta kick this puppy in the ass.’

‘Is that why we needed this ship?’ Hiiro asked. ‘Because of the hyper drive?’

‘No’ Duo replied, reaching for the hyper drive controls. ‘We need it ‘cause it’s got really big guns,’ he grinned as he pushed them past light speed.

It’d always left Hiiro feeling a bit disorientated after making the jump to warp speed but not enough he’d missed that remark. He snatched at his belt when he realized Duo was already halfway out of the cockpit. ‘Hey!’ he called to him. ‘What do we need guns for? Hey!’ Damn the stupid safety harness!

Duo was already in the main cabin with the others by the time he’d managed to get free and join them. ‘Duo!’ he barked, strolling into the room but his voice suddenly failed him when he saw the braided boy straddling Wufei’s thighs as he kissed him. Trowa had Quatre pilled up next to them on one of the short couches and both the blond and the auburn haired boy looked sympathetically at him.

The prince felt his ire rise up and snap as his powers of reason and words started spilling from his lips before his brain had time to assess them. ‘What? Do you spread your legs for anyone that asks?’

Duo slipped quickly of Wufei’s lap, turned and slapped the prince hard in the face then walked quickly past the stunned boy and left him standing there, his cheek stinging with the red welt of his hand print as he looked into the admonishing eyes of his ship mates.

‘Shit,’ he said softly, sinking down in one of the chairs.

‘What in the hell is your problem anyway?’ Wufei grumbled.

‘I...’ Hiiro began then forced his tongue to be still long enough for his brain to catch up. It didn’t help much. ‘Damn it. I don’t know,’ he sighed, rubbing his face and looking down the hall where Duo had disappeared. ‘He’s driving me crazy,’ he confessed, leaning back against the wall.

‘He drives us crazy,’ Wufei corrected. ‘You’re acting like a complete moron.’

‘I know!’ Hiiro barked. ‘I know,’ he said in a voice of forced quiet, looking back down the hall again. ‘I just... I hate it when you touch him,’ he growled. ‘I’m sorry,’ he added. ‘It’s not my place I just... damn it, I...’

‘You’ve got it bad,’ Trowa smiled, pulling Quatre a little closer.

Hiiro stared at him a moment, seemingly surprised by the information, then dropped his gaze and sighed again as he ran his hand through his messy brown hair. ‘I should go apologize,’ he said more to himself than the others.

‘If you’d chill out and just let him be himself you’d probably get what you want,’ Wufei advised, stretching out on the small couch.

‘That doesn’t bother you?’ Hiiro asked, a little put out by the idea.

‘Why should it?’ Wufei replied. ‘I care for him,’ he admitted. ‘Wouldn’t want anyone else at my back if I could manage it but I don’t wanna pick out curtains or anything. I don’t do guys as a rule, remember?’

‘I don’t see you turning Duo down,’ the prince pointed out.

Wufei turned his head to look at him. ‘I don’t turn Duo down because I don’t want to, not because I can’t. I like you but I can’t say I’ll ever like you enough to turn him away. He does what he likes. Get over it.’

Hiiro watched as the Chinese boy turned back to the ceiling and shut his eyes. He sat for a long minute contemplating his words. He truly had acted like a complete moron. Duo had made him no promises. They didn’t have a relationship and here he was trying to tell him who he could sleep with. He sighed again then got up to go look for him. There was only one closed cabin so he knocked, knowing Duo must be inside.

‘Duo?’ he called gently but there was no answer. ‘I just... I just wanted to apologize for being a jerk back there,’ he told the cold metal door. ‘I don’t know why I said that... well ... yeah I do but... I’m sorry, ok?’ he paused but there was still no sign of life. ‘What you do is your business,’ he went on. ‘I had no right butting in like that and ... I know I implied you were being loose or something but ... that was wrong. That’s not what I really think. I was just... I just…’ the door clicked and swished open, revealing the most heart wrenching sight Hiiro had ever seen in his life. He instantly felt his stomach turn and determination rise in his chest to make damn sure he never had cause to see tears on Duo’s face again.

‘Ah, damn, I’m so sorry,’ Hiiro gasped, stepping back from the door as the power of the emotions swirling through him made him dizzy. ‘Fuck, what can I do?’ he asked, stepping back up again. ‘Please,’ he begged. ‘Please don’t cry. Ah shit… Duo? God damn, what’ve I done?’

Duo reached up and put his hand on his lips to stay his words as he blinked and another huge tear rolled down his cheek, taking a piece of Hiiro’s heart with it. ‘Do you trust me?’ he asked softly.

Hiiro almost blurted yes but he made himself stop to consider his words. He couldn’t afford to lie to him, not now. He was surprised to hear himself say, ‘With my life,’ once he’d thought about it.

‘We’ve got four hours to Heru,’ the braided boy told him as he pulled him into his cabin. ‘Make them count,’ he whispered as the door swished shut.

‘Duo, you don’t have to...’ Hiiro began as the light all but disappeared.

‘Shhh,’ the braided boy hushed then kissed him softly as he started unbuckling his belt.

‘I need to know why,’ the prince persisted even as his head began to swim in the heat Duo was creating in his body.

‘Because you make me feel alive,’ Duo told him then kissed him again as he pushed his shirt off his shoulders. ‘Because I am the essence of adventure,’ he smirked as Hiiro began pulling his shirt off as well while Duo moved on to the prince’s pants. ‘Because in less than five hours we’ll both face the gates of hell in more ways than one, because when I laid with Wufei last night I called out your name and … and because,’ Duo panted as Hiiro laid him back on the bed and slipped between his thighs. ‘You lo... you… ahhhHHHH,’ he gasped as Hiiro slowly penetrated him.

‘I love you,’ Hiiro breathed life into the thought. Duo arched back and groaned his name as he began pushing him deeper into the fog. Hiiro had never known such joy existed. To be one with this creature of the earth and sky, to know him in this, the most intimate of ways, was like walking through the gates of heaven and finding out there was still more. He loved him so deeply, so completely, he knew from that moment on he was hopelessly lost, a willing and eager servant to the beauteous boy in his arms. He knew as he kissed his sweet lips and felt his quickening breath against his cheek that beyond the shadow of a doubt, he’d happily die for him. He was lost in the tender, velvet kiss of his lover when the claxon alarms suddenly sounded.

‘Shit,’ Duo sighed. ‘Damn it, those bastards have the worse timing,’ he groused, slipping out of bed and grabbing his pants.

‘What is it?’ Hiiro asked, following his lead.

‘Remember those cool looking controls on the pilot chair?’ Duo asked. Hiiro stopped and stared at him. ‘Wanna play with ‘em?’ Duo grinned as he opened the door and took off down the hall, still half dressed. Hiiro hopped after him with his pants still undone, his shirt in his teeth and one shoe half on as Duo ran the hilt of his knife down the ribs in the ceiling. ‘Up’n at ‘em ladies!’ the boy cried. ‘We’ve got company coming and they ain’t selling door to door! Fei!’ he bellowed.

‘Here!’ the Chinese boy barked from behind them.

‘Take the aft turret,’ Duo barked as the Chinese boy disappeared.

‘What in the hell’s going on?’ Hiiro demanded, wiggling into his shirt.

‘Pirates,’ Duo informed him. ‘You two know how an ion cannon works?’ he yelled at Quatre and Trowa, who had just emerged from another of the cabins looking a bit mussed. Trowa answered first.

‘Yeap.’

‘Take starboard; Sweetpea, you’ve got port. Just point and shoot and don’t hit us,’ he told him, then slapped the metal wall of the ship hard with his knife hilt, making them both jump. ‘MOVE!’ he bellowed as he dragged Hiiro to the cockpit.

‘How can they attack us in hyperspace?’ Hiiro asked, buckling into the pilot’s chair.

‘They set a trap,’ Duo informed him, preparing to bring them out of hyperspace. ‘We keep going, we run right through about ten thousand miles of colony scrap metal. We’ll have to stop and fight.’

‘Shit,’ Hiiro swallowed, pulling the controls for the cannon up.

‘You’ve never seen live action, have you?’ Duo asked.

‘The universe has been at peace for a thousand years,’ Hiiro reminded him.

‘Yeah,’ Duo snorted. ‘You can tell these guys that when we drop out.’

Hiiro didn’t have time to retort; a moment later they were dropping out of hyperspace and he was slipping his hands onto the arm rest controls of the ship’s massive beam cannon. The stars reappeared as long streaks then suddenly everything was mass mayhem. They were everywhere! Ships, small, mobile, fast, like a swarm of angry bees. Something hit the back right corner panel, rocking the ship as Hiiro’s fingers slid smoothly into place.

The moment his hands touched the controls a holographic display of the battle field popped up in front of him. He could see everything, everyone of them and their relation to the ship and weapons. His fingers moved instinctively over the controls, calling up tactical information and linking him to the other boys in the ion cannon turrets. He was the center of their defense.

‘You two can get cozy later,’ Duo quipped grabbing the ship’s manual controls ‘Right now we’ve got some spuds to fry.’ Suddenly the ship lurched and did a double back flip loopty loop. When the world stopped spinning they’d come out directly behind the line of fighters that had been on their tail.

Hiiro reacted on raw instinct and fired, taking out most of the line before they could break formation. His connection to the other turrets allowed him to guide the other boys so that the ones that did break away didn’t make it far.

‘Holy space monkeys, Jap-man! You’re a god damn phenomena!’ Duo howled with glee. ‘Let’s do that again!’ he crowed, diving into the fray.

Hiiro laughed but his hands never stopped their deft communication. It was so smooth; the ship’s weapons controls answered his every whim with the touch of a fingertip, the glance of an eye. He could see it all, everything. He even knew what to expect from Duo’s chaotic and somewhat audacious piloting. It was over way before Hiiro wanted it to be.

‘Is that it?’ he asked disappointedly as he checked his scanners again.

Duo chuckled. ‘Why’re you asking me?’ he retorted, checking for damages and assessing their position.

Hm. Good point, Hiiro thought to himself as he scanned again, hoping to find something else to annihilate.

‘Shit,’ Duo breathed then was suddenly gone.

It took a minute for Hiiro to lock everything down before he could go find out what was up. When he found Duo he was pulling Wufei from the aft turret. The braided boy’s face was almost as white as the Chinese boy’s as he groaned and let Duo slip him out of the fight chair and onto the hall floor.

‘Damn,’ Duo breathed softly when he saw the metal fragment in his friend’s left thigh. ‘Hey, man,’ he smiled, brushing back the wisps of raven hair that had escaped Wufei’s tight ponytail. ‘You’re gonna live,’ he grinned as Wufei grimaced. ‘Stop being such a baby,’ he chided, leaning down to kiss the corner of his mouth.

Part of Hiiro wanted to jump forward and push them apart but he found the bigger part of him was sorry that Duo was hurting over his friend’s injury. The slight taming of the little green monster in his bowels also left him the ability to feel for the injured boy as well, even if he was kissing Duo, which he really wished he wouldn’t do but then again, if it were him he’d certainly be puckering up and… His thoughts were interrupted by the sudden gasping howl of Wufei as Duo jerked the jagged metal from his thigh. He realized the boy was using the kiss as a distraction before the metal hit the floor.

‘Can you walk?’ Duo asked his raven haired friend.

‘Hell no,’ Wufei groused. ‘Carry me?’ he grinned.

‘Christ,’ Duo swore, pulling away and letting his patient’s head bounce off the hard metal floor. Wufei barked and groaned as he bent to examining the wound. ‘Everyone’s a comedian,’ Duo groused.

‘Ahh, damn boy, leave me some skin, will’ya?’ the Chinese boy grumbled.

‘There’s another piece,’ Duo told him as he ripped his pants leg open.

‘Leave it!’ Wufei begged.

‘Ahh, but, Fei babe,’ the braided boy grinned, glancing at Hiiro as he slid his hand up under Wufei pants leg to cup his crotch. The raven haired boy hissed and lay back on the floor. ‘It’s gotta come out,’ he said as he ripped it from his thigh. Hiiro grimaced as Wufei growled and slammed both hands into the floor.

‘Shit! You sadistic bastard!’ the Chinese boy growled.

‘That’s gonna need a patch,’ Duo reasoned, dragging him to his feet. ‘Your majo know any healing techniques?’ he asked Hiiro as they passed by him in the hall.

‘He’s not…mine,’ Hiiro replied, unsure of his words even as they fell from his lips. Was he?

Duo paused to consider him then he smiled. ‘Dog pile in the main cabin!’ he suddenly shouted as he grinned and dragged Wufei down the corridor. Quatre and Trowa came in just after them and watched as Duo laid their injured teammate on the table.

‘Can you do anything with this?’ Duo asked Quatre, showing him the wound.

‘I’ll need sulfur and a little bit of silver,’ the blond informed him.

‘In your quarters,’ Duo replied. ‘What?’ he asked when Quatre stared at him is disbelief. ‘You didn’t think I packed?’ he asked, rolling his eyes again. ‘Shoo,’ he added, pushing the slightly befuddled blond boy toward the door.

Hiiro watched as Duo cleaned and prepared the wounds. It was such an odd feeling, seeing his new lover fussing over another. Was it only a few hours ago he’d wanted to rip the Chinese boy’s arms off for touching the long haired beauty? He pondered the strange feeling as he watched Wufei’s hand come up to casually caress the back of Duo’s thigh as he probed his leg for any more metal. He stepped forward so he could see the Chinese boy’s face and noted that he pulled his hand away from Duo’s thigh.

‘You ok?’ he asked his raven haired teammate.

‘I... would be’ he grimaced. ‘If he’d ...quit diggin in it!’ he groaned.

‘You’re such a damn woman sometimes,’ Duo admonished, probing deeper as Wufei grunted again.

They both turned slightly as Quatre came back into the cabin. ‘You know my craft well,’ he smiled at Duo, holding a small packet and silver medallion in his hand.

‘It’s all com...mon knowledge,’ he replied slowly as he paused to look at the blonds’ bright face. Whatever had distracted him didn’t hold him for long. ‘I think it’s clean,’ he said, pulling Quatre forward so he could see the wound. Hiiro’s brow furrowed once again as he glanced down at Wufei curiously, hoping for enlightenment as to what this was all about as Duo was standing so close to the blonds’ back his body was pressing against him gently. Wufei just rolled his eyes cluelessly and sat back.

‘May I observe?’ the braided boy asked in a hushed whisper as he maneuvered himself up closer, wrapping his arms around Quatre’s back and running his hands down his arms to where he was holding his wares.

Quatre shivered slightly ‘You are well informed,’ he replied.

‘I keep my ears open,’ Duo told him. ‘Do you mind?’ he whispered in his ear, laying his hands on the back of Quatre’s as he unwrapped the sulfur.

‘No,’ the blond replied, continuing with his task.

Hiiro watched as they spread the substance over the injury as one. Duo’s hands cupping the back of Quatre’s following his every movement as he worked. The blond boy’s eyes were gradually beginning to glow faintly with the intensity of his concentration as Duo was drawn into the spell. Hiiro felt his heart rate increase as the two boys melted together as one; the heat of the shared energies as Quatre moved the silver medallion over the wounds spreading through them caused the braided boy to sigh heavily then hiss as the metal began to sing.

Duo’s eyes shut as his head moved slowly, caressing the blond boy’s hair with his cheek. Hiiro’s breath caught in his throat as he watched them fall deeper into the spell, Quatre’s ocean blue eyes slipping shut as well as he leaned back into the braided boy’s arms. Duo pressed into him, drawing him closer and relishing the massive amount of power emanating from the slight blonds’ body. Hiiro had the sudden urge to take them both in his arms and rock them gently until they lay spent and broken beneath him. Gods, they looked so damn good together!

Slowly the wound began to close, the further the healing progressed the hotter the two boy’s performing the task became. Soon Quatre was flushed crimson, a mantel Hiiro knew to be one of deepest passion from personal experience, and Duo was down right vibrating as he ran his hands up and down the blond boy’s arms and kissed his neck and jaw. The moment the spell was complete Duo spun him around and kissed him so passionately he ended up pushing him back on top of Wufei in his attempt to kiss and disrobe him.

‘W…wait’ Quatre hissed though he seemed to have little will to push the braided boy away.

‘Why?’ Duo groaned, devouring his collar bone and unlacing his shirt.

‘I...’ Quatre panted. ‘I’m promis…’ he tried again but the heat was overpowering him. ‘Trowa...’ he whispered feebly as his body completed it’s betrayal and pulled the braided boy closer.

Duo slowly stilled, balling his fists in the blond boy’s shirt as he buried his face in his neck. ‘Shit,’ he hissed then pulled back. ‘Too late huh?’ he asked, still trying to catch his breath. Quatre just looked up at him with passion bright eyes then after a moment glanced over to see Trowa standing quietly by the door, watching passively.

Duo turned to look at the tall boy as well as he backed off and pulled Quatre back to his feet. He shocked the young blond by stealing another kiss when he’d regained his feet then pulled back and grinned at him. ‘You’re incredible,’ he told the flustered boy. ‘I’ve never met anyone with a power like that, and so damn cute to boot,’ he winked, turning back to face the tall boy by the door. ‘Guard him well,’ he advised.

Trowa stood for a moment silently regarding them then slowly stepped across the room. His long legs made it seem as if he were gliding instead of walking as he approached. He made a slight alteration in his course that mildly shocked them all as he stepped up close enough to Hiiro that his body brushed against his chest as he leaned in and whispered something in his ear. Something in Hiiro’s eyes seemed to awaken with his words then he slowly withdrew. Duo saw the slight chill run through his Japanese lover as the boy’s one visible emerald eyed rounded on him. The long haired boy felt a chill himself when Trowa smirked slightly then slipped his hand in Quatre’s and led him from the cabin.

‘What did he say?’ Duo asked curiously.

‘Nothing,’ Hiiro insisted.

Duo rounded on him and humphed. ‘Excuse me?’ he groused. ‘He said something, we all saw him. Don’t you stand there and insult my intelligence telling me `nothing. What did he say?’ Hiiro rolled his eyes and headed for the cockpit again. ‘Hey!’ Duo grumbled. ‘That’s not gonna earn you snuggle points!’ he shouted after him.

‘I think you own me an apology,’ Wufei interjected, tugging on his shirt.

‘Screw you, ya big baby,’ Duo grumbled, letting himself be drawn down just the same.

‘That’ll work,’ Wufei grinned as he pulled him closer for a kiss.

Duo responded kindly then pulled back a little less disgruntled but not by much. ‘When did the damn daredevil learn to string enough words together he managed to catch Quatre anyway?’ he groused.

‘While you were buried under me in a flower bed I should imagine,’ Wufei told him, trying to kiss him again.

‘Shit,’ Duo grumbled, laying his head on the Chinese boy’s chest.

‘It really bothers you doesn’t it?’ he asked, petting his head.

‘He’s… I don’t know,’ the braided boy said softly. ‘It doesn’t matter,’ he sighed suddenly then pushed himself up and kissed Wufei long and deep. The Chinese boy was just starting to really get into it when there was a huge boom and the entire ship rocked violently.

‘CHIIIIIIHOOOOO!!’ Duo crowed happily, jumping off the startled Wufei and bolting for the cockpit.

‘DUO, GET UP HERE!’ Hiiro shouted as the first round of the beam cannon lit up the sky.

‘HO, HO there!’ the braided boy cried, pushing the armrest controls down so Hiiro couldn’t fire again. ‘Nice shootin’ tex,’ he grinned dropping into the co pilot’s seat. ‘But you’re trying to toast the good guys. Hey there, plow boy!’ he said as he opened the comm.

‘WHAT THE HELL’R YA TRYIN TA DO YA CRAZY, LONG HAIRED, IDGIT, DEMON! YA ALMOST ROASTED MY ASS!’ a man’s voice shouted through the static.

‘Just keeping ya on yer toes there, fly boy,’ Duo grinned and winked at Hiiro who was still powering down the cannon and looking a little apologetic.

‘That wasn’t my damn toes you were aiming at!’ the man barked. ‘What in the hell’r you doin out here in the middle of hell’s asshole anyway? I thought you were s’posed to be babysitting some ….’

‘How’s Gracy?’ Duo cut him off, grinning impishly at Hiiro who was practicing his gaping fish impression again.

‘Oh, she’s…’ the man’s voice came back then paused ‘You know … well... ahh… hell, she hates me,’ he finally gave in. ‘Ya know I can’t figure out why that woman…’

‘She loves ya too much to hate’cha,’ Duo consoled. ‘You gonna invite us in or are we gonna stand out here on the door step all day?’ he asked, making the entry burn calculations.

‘Hm? Oh, yeah,’ the man replied. ‘Follow me down and stay tight boy, the thermals have been a bitch lately.’

‘Oh baby, you do care,’ Duo teased ‘Well?’ he glanced at Hiiro. ‘You heard the man, take’er down and stay tight. This rock’s covered in seismic activity so take those thermals seriously,’ he advised. ‘And, umm, let’s try and save the fish thing for the bedroom, shall we?’

Hiiro snapped his mouth shut just as they were rocked by the first flare from the surface. Seismic activity was putting it a little mildly if the up drafts were disturbing the atmosphere this high up. He followed the ship in front of him, staying as close as he dared without actually running into him as they plummeted through the thick layer of brimstone clouds that covered the planet’s surface. His mouth dropped back open again as they cleared the clouds and he saw the surface for the first time. Apparently, Hell did exist.

There were volcanoes as far as the eye could see. Some were in mid eruption, spitting their magma into the smoldering sky while others simply oozed the molten rock from the jagged peaks and crevices along their cliffs. How in the hell could anyone live here? The ship rocked hard as one of the eruptions caught its edge.

‘Damn! You awake back there, boy!? What the hell’s with you?’ the man shouted into the comm.

‘Ain’t been home in awhile’ Duo quipped. ‘Thought I’d take a snap shot or two.’

Suddenly another eruption exploded right in front of them, baring their path and knocking the ship straight up. Hiiro compensated instantly, mimicking the moves he’d seen Duo use during their fight and tumbling the ship backwards in a double summersault, loopty loop that ended up with them almost kissing the belly of the other ship once Hiiro had pulled them out of it.

‘What the hell, Howie!’ Duo growled. ‘You trying to cook us?’

‘Q8420,’ the man hissed back. ‘Told ya they’re a bit quirky lately; she wasn’t due for another twenty minutes. Where in the hell are you?’

‘Look down.’

‘HOLY SHIT!’ the man barked as the ship above them veered away. ‘Damn it boy! If you ain’t the best pilot this old dog has ever seen. We should be clean now but I wouldn’t wipe yer ass just yet. Stay close,’ the man laughed.

Hiiro couldn’t help but smile as Duo grinned at him. He had a very good feeling that that had been one hell of a compliment. The rest of the flight was less chaotic but no less awe inspiring. They were led over the broken, bubbling landscape until they saw what turned out to be a huge, low lying dome set in a massive crater in the southern quadrant. Hiiro brought them down on a landing platform that was set before two huge, craggy mountains. There was a massive gate set between the peaks made of huge, black, wrought iron bars as thick as a tree trunk and a thousand feet high. Between the bars was an odd illumination Hiiro assumed to be more of whatever the dome was made of, maybe some sort of energy force field powered by the massive amounts of thermal energy on this planet. However, it was the two, seven hundred feet tall scythes that adorned the gates that truly chilled his bones and left him with the impression that the beautiful wraith called Duo had actually led them to Hells Gate.
