"The Gobanme Star"

Ch 3

The next day was spent in the sane company of Hiiro’s three other companions. Wufei sparred with him in the morning and Trowa took him on top of the lowest tower to play a game of chess in the afternoon. He’d managed to keep his wits enough not to fall from the steep roof but he’d lost the game. It was incredibly difficult to concentrate when he was faced with a two hundred foot fall.

Quatre had worked with him on improving his resistance to love charms which ended with them making love in the orchard after Hiiro proved his skill at reflecting the spell. Apparently, Quatre hadn’t had a lot of practice resisting his own spells but neither of them really seemed too worried about it at the time. He didn’t see Duo again until dinner when that itching sprang up between his shoulder blades again. He didn’t bother to turn around this time.

‘Why did you come back?’ he asked.

‘My job’s not done,’ Duo replied.

‘Consider yourself fired,’ Hiiro told him, smiling as Quatre giggled at something Trowa had whispered to him. The tall boy was so quiet most of the time he couldn’t imagine what he would be saying to the blond boy to make him laugh.

‘Is he as sweet as he looks?’ Duo asked from behind him.

Hiiro furrowed his brow uncertainly and turned to look at him. ‘You’ve been spying,’ he accused.

‘Only a little,’ Duo smiled.

Hiiro started to say something but the words got lost for a moment as his eyes took in the bare shoulder that had fallen out of the boy’s loose, wide necked black shirt. He shut his eyes to gather his scattered thoughts but when he opened them they disappeared again as Duo was less than an inch from his face. He thought he should draw away but he didn’t want to so he held his ground.

‘Have you no sense of propriety?’ Hiiro asked as Duo smirked and moved closer.

‘No.’ the braided boy answered arrogantly. ‘But I have a really big list of inappropriate acts,’ he said as he tried to kiss him.

‘I’m sure,’ Hiiro retorted as he pulled away.

Duo grinned approvingly, then reached to Hiiro’s half empty plate and picked up his used napkin, dabbing it in his almost empty goblet he used the wine he’d been drinking to wash his lips then tried again but Hiiro still pulled away.

‘Oh, come on,’ Duo pouted ‘I’m being more than fair.’

‘You’re dangerous,’ the prince surmised, narrowing his gaze. The braided boy smiled that impish little smile again and laid his hands on Hiiro’s shoulders as he hovered just before his lips.

‘And?’ he breathed softly, letting the moisture of his breath wash over his mouth.

Hiiro felt his body respond no matter how hard he tried to hold it in check. He hated himself for being drawn into another failure but he simply couldn’t stop his crotch from twitching at the scent of this boy’s skin. ‘Bold,’ he added.

‘And?’ Duo whispered sensually as he crawled about his person.

‘Clever,’ Hiiro admitted slowly. His chest was straining with the effort to keep from panting as his heart hammered excitedly. Why couldn’t he resist? He knew it wasn’t a charm, he’d learned to resist and even reflect the spells. No, this was just pure animal magnetism and he had no defense against the braided beauty.

‘One more,’ Duo coaxed as he slid his left leg over Hiiro’s thigh putting him half on the prince’s lap.

‘Beautiful,’ Hiiro breathed just before Duo kissed him slowly. Once again he felt the sweet heat of passion flood his body. The flavor was different though, the bitterness wasn’t there so he figured that must have been the taste of the drug. The knowledge that the boy was actually kissing him because he wanted to was like a small bomb going off in his chest and he suddenly found himself pulling him fully on his lap as he deepened the kiss. Someone cleared their throat rather loudly, bringing them back to reality so they slowly separated. Reluctantly, Hiiro let his lips part from the velvet delight of the braided boy’s mouth and opened his eyes.

Duo slipped off his lap, glancing guiltily at the Emperor who looked a bit like an active volcano. The rest of the room had fallen quiet and was staring at them as well, none so vehemently as Milliardo Peacecraft. Hiiro didn’t care much past the lack of respect he’d shown the room until his gaze lighted on Quatre’s face and his heart sank. The last thing he wanted to do was cause his little, blond lover any pain. He cursed himself again for his weakness. Quatre offered him a small smile as the room began to return to normal and turned back to his conversation with Trowa.

‘Do you love him?’ Duo asked, eating the leftovers on Hiiro’s plate.

Hiiro looked at the blond boy again who kept glancing over at them from time to time. ‘Yes,’ he admitted.

‘Don’t fall too hard,’ Duo warned. ‘You’re not the only cherry in his tree.’ Hiiro’s eyes rounded on him angrily. ‘Hey, I didn’t mean anything!’ Duo defended. ‘He seems like a great guy. None better!’ he added, watching as the words defused the time bomb in Hiiro’s eyes. ‘It’s not my fault if the kid’s got it for someone else.’

‘What do you know?’ Hiiro ground out rhetorically.

‘Absolutely nothing you don’t,’ the braided boy told him as Hiiro glanced once again to see Quatre giggle at something his tall companion had said.

‘Best leave him be and get some sleep tonight,’ he advised. ‘We’re going out tomorrow.’ Hiiro rounded on him again. ‘Geez, you’re gonna get a whiplash like that,’ Duo groaned, rolling his eyes. ‘I’m here to test you so we’re going on a little expedition. And make sure your boy’s get some zz’s cause they’re all coming with us.’

‘Where are you going?’ Hiiro asked as it didn’t sound like he meant to stay the night.

‘Gotta grace the local guild with my radiant personality,’ the braided boy smiled, batting his long, sooty lashes and Hiiro just managed to keep from laughing. ‘Ya know,’ Duo told him, stealing another leftover potato from his plate. ‘You’re not doing as bad as you seem to think. You know when I’m around... most of the time,’ he waggled his eye brows and glanced at Quatre. Hiiro blushed but otherwise didn’t react. ‘Even if you can’t see me,’ he amended. ‘You shook off a healthy dose of looney tunes 607, a damn fine party favor I might add, in a tenth the time it usually takes for a newby and you’ve got the biggest muummphlblemmmunblme,’ Hiiro clamped his hand over his mouth but he refused to stop talking. ‘…ever seen,’ he continued when he let go. ‘And you managed to pinch my ass without me catching you!’ he grinned. ‘Oh, you’re a hell of a kisser too,’ he added, slipping from his cushion into a low crouch. ‘By the way, I was talking about those healthy biceps of yours, not your wank and umm... you know, I’m beginning to like that gaping fish look on you after all. Later,’ he grinned as he faded away into the shadows.

Hiiro didn’t bother to snap his mouth shut this time as it pulled involuntarily into a tolerant grin as he shook his head affectionately. He furrowed his brow when he realized what he’d done. When had he started feeling affectionate toward the braided baka? He didn’t manage to get a moment with Quatre until later in the evening while Trowa and Wufei were sparing together. The tall boy was one hell of a fighter and practically impossible to hit as he flipped and tumbled around the room.

‘You ok?’ Hiiro asked the blond boy as they watched from the couch in front of the fire.

Quatre sighed deeply then nodded his head as he leaned back. ‘He’s very attractive,’ he said softly, watching Trowa do a back flip to avoid Wufei’s sword.

‘Duo or Trowa?’ Hiiro smiled.

The blond boy snorted softly and blushed. ‘Is it that obvious?’ he chuckled.

‘Only when you smile,’ Hiiro replied, smiling kindly.

‘Sorry,’ Quatre sighed gently, turning his gaze back to the tall, green eyed boy.

‘Don’t be,’ Hiiro told him. ‘I care for you. I’ll be glad if he makes you happy.’

‘He doesn’t know I’m alive,’ the blond grumbled dejectedly. ‘Believe it or not, not everyone goes for me.’

‘I do find that hard to believe,’ a soft tenor broke into their conversation.

They both turned to find Duo leaning on the back of the couch yet neither had had any clue he was there.

‘You truly have no respect for the privacy of others,’ Hiiro shook his head.

‘Is it my fault you’re unobservant?’ Duo retorted. ‘Anyhow,’ he added leaning down close to Quatre’s ear. ‘I can’t see anyone in their right mind turning you down. You should give it a shot.’

‘You think so?’ the blond boy asked hopefully.

‘Oh, hell yeah,’ Duo replied. ‘And if he is crazy enough to turn ya down,’ he added, leaning close to his ear to whisper, ‘I’d be more than honored to make it up to you.’

‘Leave him alone,’ Hiiro growled low in his throat.

‘Geez, man,’ Duo huffed. ‘You think you’re the only one allowed to have any fun or what?’

‘I care for him,’ Hiiro retorted coldly.

‘And I’m not capable of such a deep emotion, is that it?’ Duo snipped, backing off petulantly. Trowa stopped their fight to turn and watch the scene as the volume rose.

‘You’ll just use him for one of your stupid games,’ Hiiro accused icily.

Duo’s eyes sparkled like a wildfire in the dark. ‘I was hired to prepare you for the realities you’re going to face when you leave here,’ he said so coolly it sent a chill down Hiiro’s spine. ‘If you truly believe you can become a swordsman without busting a knuckle or two then by all means, I’ll be on the next shuttle off planet,’ he said, fading back toward Wufei. ‘Honestly,’ he added as his back collided with the Chinese boy’s chest. ‘I’ve got better things to do than try and beat some sense into your thick head anyway,’ he said as Wufei’s hand slipped up to encircle his waist. He held Hiiro’s gaze as his head fell back until it rested on Wufei’s shoulder, then he turned and accepted the kiss he freely offered as his sword fell to the floor and his other hand came up to rest on his hip.

Hiiro’s chest tightened almost painfully as he watched the two boys sink into each other confounded by the sudden urge he had to rip the raven haired boy’s arms off. Finally, the torture eased as Duo pulled away but the reprieve didn’t last long as he took the Chinese boy by the hand and led him toward the door.

‘Besides,’ Duo smiled coyly as he pulled Wufei’s hands around his waist and let him slip them under the tail of his shirt. ‘You’re too damn good to need my help anyway, right?’ he asked as he lifted his legs and let Wufei pull him up so he could wrap them around his waist. The Chinese boy was kissing his neck now as he walked him toward the door. ‘I mean... you’ve proven yourself much too clever for the likes of me so far,’ Duo sighed, arching back to let Wufei nibble at his throat as he carried him away. ‘Ta.’

Hiiro sprang from the couch before he realized what he was doing but Quatre’s hand on his arm made him think twice. His mind fell into confusion as he realized he had been about to rush after them and rip Duo from Wufei’s arms. What was he thinking? How in the hell could he be so damn jealous over someone he’d never even slept with? Damn it, what kind of magic did the braided boy wield to have imprisoned his heart so completely?

‘You hurt him,’ Quatre said softly. Hiiro’s dark gaze rounded on him but it faded almost instantly. ‘His intentions toward me were pure,’ Quatre told him. ‘He has a genuine affection, I could feel it. He meant no disrespect.’

Hiiro’s heart fell even further as he realized what he’d done. He’d treated Duo as though he were incapable of love or affection. Damn it! Why couldn’t he think straight when the braided idiot was around? His frustration got the better of him and he turned to face Trowa.

‘Do you harbor any affection for him?’ he growled indicating Quatre. Trowa glanced at the blond then back at Hiiro. ‘Then tell him before someone walks off with him as well,’ he growled, then stormed from the room and slammed his bedroom door.

Quatre’s eyes were stuck wide open as he sat mortified by Hiiro’s actions. Trowa considered him for a moment then walked over and picked up Wufei’s abandoned sword and put it away.

‘I love you,’ he said evenly, still facing the wall where he’d hung the blade.

‘Y...you do?’ Quatre stammered breathily. Trowa turned to face him, then relaxed a bit when he saw the hopeful look in the blond boy’s eyes.

He walked over and knelt down in front of him, sitting back on his heals. ‘Yes,’ he confirmed. ‘However,’ he added before Quatre could dive on him. ‘I won’t come between you and Hiiro.’

‘Hiiro’s in love with Duo,’ Quatre grinned.

‘But you love the prince as well,’ Trowa pointed out.

‘Not the way I love you,’ the blond whispered almost painfully. ‘Please, Trowa,’ he added as tears of frustration began to form in his eyes.

Trowa’s warm, green eyes opened up to him slowly, showing him all the things he held in his heart and the tears in Quatre’s slowly swelled and fell down his cheeks as his lips spread in a happy smile. The tall boy leaned over and took him by either side of his head, gently bringing their lips together and Quatre trembled as his lungs filled with the sweet breath of their first kiss. He could feel the enormity of Trowa’s heart pouring into him as he allowed himself to be laid back on the couch. All thoughts of Hiiro, Duo or anything else faded away under the perfect simplicity of submerging himself in the presence of his one true love. He said a silent prayer that the others would get their shit together. It’d truly be a tragic waste if they never had the chance to experience this for themselves.

Hiiro smiled softly when he found them curled around each other the next morning on the couch. He wondered why he didn’t feel the same animosity that had kept him up most of the night fuming about where Duo and Wufei were when he looked at them. He knew his feelings for Quatre were no less honest, they were just... different. Looking down at the couple’s contented faces he had no doubt that they’d have no problem understanding exactly what he meant. He was just about to turn and leave them when a knock came at the door.

‘Yes?’ Hiiro asked the maiden that stood in the hall.

‘Your shuttle leaves in thirty minutes, Sire,’ she told him, bowing low.

‘Shuttle?’ he inquired.

‘Yes, Sire,’ the girl confirmed. ‘Shall I inform Lord Duo of your eminent arrival?’

Hiiro thought about telling her no but that would only infuriate his father and postpone his ticket out of there so he nodded his head and shut the door.

‘Where’r you goin?’ Quatre’s sleepy voice asked.

‘We,’ Hiiro corrected him. ‘The great Toorima has booked us passage on a shuttle straight to hell no doubt,’ he groused. ‘Get dressed. We only have a half hour till we board.’

‘What?’ Trowa gurgled as his head popped from behind the back of the couch. ‘What about a shower?’ he griped, rolling off of his lover. ‘And breakfast...’

‘I guess you found a way to loosen his tongue,’ Hiiro chuckled at Quatre.

‘You’re ok with this?’ Trowa asked as he dragged his pants on.

‘Be good to him,’ Hiiro advised with a smile.

‘Oh, he’s very good,’ Quatre grinned impishly, lacing his pants up.

‘Is he now?’ Hiiro’s eyes gleamed demonically as he looked the tall boy up and down.

Trowa paused as his brows drew together thoughtfully.

‘We’re late,’ Hiiro grinned, tossing him his other shoe.

Five minutes later they were walking down the hallway toward the space port but came to a sudden halt when they rounded a corner to find Wufei sprawled half naked in the flowerbed in the main entryway. At least he had his pants on but Hiiro was not amused.

The prince walked straight over to the wall filling a bucket that had been left there by custodial workers doing their morning cleaning with sea water from the bay outside the window and tossed it on the sleeping Chinese boy.

Wufei sprang to his feet. He had no idea where his shirt was but his sword was well in hand. Hiiro had no clue where the blade had come from but he backed off until the Chinese boy got his bearings enough to recognize them. He lowered his sword and stared at them, dripping with sea water and obviously confused.

‘His Lordship has us booked on a flight to hell,’ Hiiro told him coldly. ‘Move your ass,’ he growled as he walked on by.

‘What’s his problem?’ Wufei asked the other’s as he stumbled from the flowerbed.

‘You don’t remember leaving with Duo last night?’ Quatre asked.

‘Yeah, so what?’ the Chinese boy retorted, banging his head to get the water out of his ear as he followed them toward the space port.

‘I think the prince has a thing for our long haired friend,’ Quatre chuckled.

‘So?’ Wufei grumbled, trying to find the arm hole of his shirt that was inside out and twisted in the back. ‘Who doesn’t?’ he asked absently, turning a circle in his attempt to see what was wrong with the garment.

‘I think he’d kind of like to have him all to himself,’ the blond informed the befuddled boy.

Wufei snorted. ‘Good luck,’ and finally got his shirt on straight as they entered the docking area and all their mouths dropped open.

Instead of the usual airplane shaped standard space shuttle they had all expected to see there was a custom, class two, hyper jump, deep space fighter complete with ion cannons and beam rifle pits on port, starboard and aft.

‘Hooooooly shit,’ Trowa breathed softly as they approached the huge, disk shaped ship that crouched on the landing pad on its four mechanical legs.

‘Let’s saddle up, par’ner’s,’ Duo’s voice called from the lowered landing ramp. ‘We’re burning daylight. Round up dem doggies and get em in the pin,’ he hollered in his best western drawl.

Hiiro was standing beneath the giant ship inspecting its underbelly and turned to offer the boy his gaping fish impression along with the others.

‘Christ!’ Duo huffed. ‘You’d think none of you’d ever seen a space fighter before!’

‘I haven’t,’ Quatre admitted freely, clearly in awe of the sight.

‘Not in a very long time,’ Trowa added.

‘Geez, Duo where the hell are we going?’ Wufei asked as they all gravitated toward the ramp.

‘One way ticket t’hell,’ the braided boy grinned, disappearing into the belly of the ship.

‘I knew it,’ Hiiro groused as he followed the others up the ramp.

Hiiro got stuck walking next to Wufei down the narrow hall and found he couldn’t contain the little green demon that was clawing at his insides.

‘I didn’t know you went for guys,’ he said low and cool.

‘I don’t,’ Wufei retorted.

Hiiro’s head snapped around to look at him incredulously. ‘You slept with him last night!’ he growled as quietly as his demeanor would allow.

‘Duo?’ Wufei snorted. ‘Shit, he doesn’t count.’

‘He’s a guy!’ the prince insisted.

‘Oh, hell no,’ Wufei grinned as they reached the main cabin. ‘He’s way more than that.’

The braided boy looked them over for a moment then walked from one end of the line to the other thoughtfully. He was dressed in his usual black but there was the added accompaniment of a hand blaster strapped to his right thigh, a belt with a rather large knife, what looked to be a small flashlight and two little leather pouches on it as well as another knife strapped to his left, upper arm and a shoulder holster with a hand gun in it. He looked like a drill sergeant.

He stopped at the end of the line and did a standard military about face, then tried to scowl at them but ended up busting out laughing. ‘Oh, come on!’ he chorted, falling back in one of the chairs. ‘What’re you, in the army now?’ he asked still giggling. ‘Relax, sit down. Take a load off. Put your feet up and stay a spell. Rest’yer rumps, park’yer tush...’

‘Alright already,’ Wufei growled. ‘Anything, just shut up,’ he groused, plopping down in the nearest chair.

‘You were singing a different tune last night,’ Duo grinned.

‘You weren’t annoying me last night,’ the Chinese boy retorted.

‘Where in the hell are we going?’ Hiiro butted in.

‘Ever fly a deep space fighter?’ Duo asked, swiveling around in his chair to face him with a bright smile.

‘Wha…? Me?’ Hiiro gasped. ‘Uh no,’ he answered, gathering his ego up protectively. ‘Not one like this anyway,’ he added, looking around the huge ship.

‘Wanna give it a try?’ the braided boy grinned.

‘You’re serious?’ Hiiro gaped.

‘What?’ Duo asked, lifting his right leg and placing it on the edge of the table beside Hiiro on his left side. ‘Don’t think you can handle it?’ he added mimicking the move with his left leg on the other side as he waggled his brows at the Japanese prince.

‘I can handle anything you’ve got,’ Hiiro boasted boldly, clutching his ego tightly.

‘Alrighty then!’ Duo sang, springing from his seat. ‘Let’s blow this joint,’ he crowed, running the butt of one of his knives down the ribs in the ceiling as he walked quickly toward the cockpit.

The clanging reverberated through the hull and settled in Hiiro’s stomach, waking every butterfly that had ever kissed a flower in his gut. How the hell was he gonna pull this off? He’d never piloted a ship like this in his life! He said a little prayer and slapped his damnable ego, stuffing it back in its drawer as he took the pilot’s seat.

‘Strap’em on back there, boy’s,’ Duo called to the others. ‘We’re breaking the bubble in fifteen.’ He leaned over and gripped Hiiro’s knee, then smiled at him reassuringly and commented, ‘Piece of cake.’

The prince hadn’t realized just how white he’d become but he could feel the chill in his cheeks as he nodded at his chestnut haired companion.

‘You know the little Carilian marks, right?’ Duo asked. Hiiro nodded as he tried to make sense of the control panel. ‘It’s pretty much the same thing. There’s your horizon for the atmospheric ascent,’ he pointed out. ‘Fuel, altitude, pressure...’

Hiiro was starting to get the feel of it as he started pointing out the gauges and instruments himself. ‘O2, barometric decline...’

‘Yeah, you got it,’ Duo smiled.

‘What about these?’ Hiiro asked, pulling up two complicated looking armrest controls on either side of his chair.

‘Ummm,’ Duo squinted, pushing them back down. ‘We’ll save that for deep space targeting,’ he grinned.

Hiiro nodded, a little shaken by the idea he’d just had the trigger of a deep space beam cannon in his hand.

‘Power it up,’ Duo told him, flipping on his own display and running his diagnostics. Hiiro went through the preflight warm up he’d done dozens of times in smaller ships. It wasn’t so bad really. It was pretty much the same as the smaller crafts he’d flown, just like Duo had told him. His blood began to pump excitedly as the huge ship rumbled to life.

‘You boys tight back there?’ Duo yelled to the others.

‘Wouldn’t you like to know!’ Wufei’s gruff voice retorted.

Duo chuckled then squashed it when he saw the gleam in Hiiro’s eyes. They ran through the check list one more time, then had to wait for the ion engines to finish their charge.

‘How long have you been a pilot?’ Hiiro asked curiously as the thrill of launching the large ship burned in his blood. This was what he’d longed for, what he’d dreamed of for so long. True freedom. The power of a good ship under his ass and the entire universe to explore. It was exhilarating.

‘Since I was eight,’ Duo replied, checking his calculations again.

Hiiro offered him that fish impression again. ‘You learned to fly when you were eight?’ he asked, astonished.

‘I stole a ship when I was eight,’ Duo informed him as the engines signaled their full charge.

‘But how did you learn to pilot?’

Duo indicated he should start the launch as he answered with a grin, ‘I stole a ship when I was eight.’

Hiiro gaped even harder. ‘What ship?’

‘This ship,’ Duo smiled as the roar of the engines drowned out any possibility of further conversation.

Ok. So maybe it wasn’t just like the little Carilian ships. Hiiro had to hold on with both hands just to keep the massive craft from nose diving into the sea. There was so much power. How in the hell could an eight year old boy have managed this on his own? His ponderings were quickly replaced by the need to pay attention to what he was doing as they lifted off into the clear blue morning sky. Things were easier once they were in the air. Hiiro turned them onto the proper trajectory for break away and rechecked his speed and horizon.

‘You’re a natural,’ Duo complimented. ‘Listen, there is one thing. These big boys like to jerk ya around a bit in the upper atmosphere so be ready for a wrestling match, k?’ Hiiro nodded. Duo smiled then reached over and grabbed him by the front of his shirt and dragged him over in an attempt to kiss him but Hiiro pulled up short.

‘I’m clean,’ the braided boy told him. ‘Scouts honor,’ he added holding up the three fingered salute but Hiiro just looked at him uncertainly. ‘For luck,’ he smiled but Hiiro still just stared at him. ‘You gotta know when to trust people, Hiiro. You’re holding my life and my best ship in your hands, why the hell would I try to drug you? You’re a smart guy, think about it.’

The prince took a moment to consider his words. He wanted the kiss, badly, but he really just didn’t know what to expect from the maniac boy. He was right though. Hiiro had control, even with the co-pilot’s controls the braided boy wouldn’t be able to keep the ship from breaking up if he knocked him out so he leaned over and kissed him.

Duo didn’t go too deep. They had a ship to launch after all but he did hold him for a long moment before he drew back and smiled. ‘Take my ass out there,’ he told the Japanese prince as he kicked back and put his hands behind his head.

The comfortable assurance in his posture and manner made Hiiro smile. This boy had every confidence that he could fly this strange ship and suddenly he felt that confidence was in good faith. He could do this no sweat. He sat back and gripped the controls, grinning as he kicked in the boosters that would push them to break away speed.

‘As you wish,’ he said softly, feeling the enormous power of the ship rumbling under him. There was a minute or two he had to fight to keep things steady but it wasn’t all that much worse than the smaller ships, then suddenly they broke free. There was just nothing quite like the feeling of being free of a planet’s gravity. He let the simplicity of the black velvet sky settle into his soul, an endless expanse of stars lay caught in an inky, ebony void spreading out before them like sparkles on the sea. They were so much brighter out there, and there were just so many.
