"The Gobanme Star"

Ch 13

Midii saw them off. Trowa had provided them with a small Tribarian shuttle that, with the proper access codes, would allow them to land on Old Earth with no trouble. He was less than informative about why he happened to have a Tribarian Shuttle laying around, however. Midii had given Trowa a long kiss and pecked Quatre on the forehead then kissed him as well, though it wasn’t near the steamy version she’d offered her husband. She’d also offered a hug to both Hiiro and Duo, one of which simply skittered up the landing ramp when she came at him as his lover chuckled in the background at her bewildered face. They were on their way before mid afternoon.

Aiken was much closer to Earth than Heru, which was good since the shuttle was only capable of short hyperspace jumps. It took them almost a day to reach Old Earth space. Time they spent preparing for their infiltration and researching possible solutions to the problem. It was tough because Tuberov wasn’t playing around. He was obviously seriously pissed that his trade had been shut down, having sent the bulk of his fleet to enforce the sanctions and embargoes. There was no way they were going to get away with the raids and rabble-rousing they’d used to free Isis. Hiiro held some hope that his father might have some useful information if they could only managed to speak to him.

There were a couple of tense moments when they weren’t sure their codes were going to cut it but in the end they were given clearance to land. Hiiro’s chest hurt before they touched down. His home had been over run by Tribarian soldiers. They patrolled the streets, enforcing curfews and terrorizing the local people to keep them in line. He was satisfied to find that there was a resistance force already in place when Duo took him and introduced him to the local thieves’ guild. These were the people his father allowed to function outside the law. He’d never understood before, but he did now. These were the people that had the power and knowledge to fight and they were doing their best to make the takeover as hard as they could. He and Duo made a plan to ghost the palace later that night, having learned that the Emperor was being held there as they tried to force him to sign treaties and laws giving them power over the Earthlings and their resources.

Hiiro found it incredibly easy to infiltrate the palace with all the ornate shadows it offered and made a mental note to add some strategic lighting when this was all over. They didn’t even have to try even though the halls of the palace were thick with guards even at two in the morning. Emperor J’s chambers were well guarded but that was of little concern to the two boys as they slipped in the high window above the bay. Hiiro was happy to see his father was at least physically well as he lay sleeping in his huge bed. Duo waited in the shadows as he approached and stood looking down at the man for a long moment. Here was the man he’d looked up to all his life and he had no idea of who he really was. His admiration for his father had grown over the months as his understanding of their position among their people came to light.

‘Okaerinasai,’ the old man said softly.

Hiiro crinkled his nose curiously. ‘How did you know?’

‘You are my son,’ J smiled. ‘And I’ve been watching you since you came in the window,’ the chuckled sitting up. Hiiro laughed with him as Duo emerged from the corner where the old man had waved at him.

‘Your mechanical eyes serve you well,’ the braided boy praised.

‘They come in handy,’ the man smiled at the dark figure. ‘Join us won’t you?’ he added indicating he should remove the hood but Duo remained motionless.

‘I’m sorry to have gotten you involved,’ Hiiro told his father.

‘I’m the one that should be apologizing to you for that,’ the old man chuckled again, sitting up on the edge of his bed beside his son. ‘This war was not of your making but I’m glad to have your help in ending it.’

‘I will end it,’ Hiiro assured him.

He paused a moment to consider the determination in Hiiro’s eyes, then smiled and patted his shoulder. ‘Of that I am sure,’ he replied. ‘And to answer your first question, yes, I can aid you. Where are your other companions?’

‘Awaiting our return in the inner city,’ Hiiro informed him.

‘You must bring them tomorrow night. Meet me at the Tasuka Shrine at midnight and I will give you what aid I can.’

‘Are you well?’ Hiiro asked, reluctant to leave him in his prison.

‘Hai,’ the man smiled. ‘This old bird’s tougher than they think,’ he winked, patting him on the back. ‘Now go. I’ll see you tomorrow night.’

Hiiro returned the smile and lifted his hood to go. Duo shifted and was suddenly gone but as Hiiro started to follow his father’s hand stayed him and he turned back to face him curiously. ‘Beware that one,’ the old man warned. ‘He is far more than he seems.’

Hiiro almost laughed but stifled it and simply covered his father’s hand with is own. ‘We have nothing to fear,’ he assured him then followed his lover out the window and back to their lair.

‘Duo,’ Hiiro addressed his lover as they entered the dark building in the center of town but the boy ignored him and just kept walking. ‘Hey!’ he tried again, jogging to catch up. ‘What’s the matter?’

Duo spun on him; he was still wearing his hood so Hiiro couldn’t see his eyes but he could hear the pain in his voice. ‘Don’t touch me,’ he snarled, jerking away from Hiiro’s touch. The prince was floored by the animosity in his voice.

‘Duo what…?’ he breathed, completely at a loss as to what had enraged his longhaired lover.

‘I’m not good enough for your family, right?’ Duo snapped.

‘What in the hell are you talking about?’ Hiiro exclaimed in frustration.

‘You’re ashamed of me,’ the longhaired boy replied a little softer, the pain in his heart ever more evident.

Hiiro’s eyes widened in disbelief ‘No,’ he denied. ‘Of course not. How could you even think...?’

‘Why didn’t you tell him?’ Duo cut him off. Hiiro stared, at a loss as to why he even needed to defend himself. ‘Why didn’t you even speak to me in there?’ Duo went on, closing the distance between them. ‘Why did you leave me in a shadow like I wasn’t even there!’ he growled, pushing his hood back.

Hiiro’s heart shattered as his eyes registered the tears in his lover’s violet eyes. It was true. He hadn’t even thought to tell his father of their relationship or even include him in their conversation for that matter but he knew he was in no way ashamed of his lover. He wasn’t sure how to explain his oversight but he had to try.

‘I’m not ashamed of you,’ he started. It seemed like a good place to start but Duo backed away when he stepped closer. ‘Damn it, listen to me,’ Hiiro snapped in frustration. ‘I’m sorry if I was unkind,’ he went on. ‘But it had nothing to do with shame. I’d parade you down main street right now if I could, you must know that. I was just ...I don’t know... caught up in the moment. I haven’t seen him in over two months but you’re right. I should have presented you to him right then and there and I’m sorry for being an insensitive fool.’ He stopped and waited for his response, hoping that he’d at least touched on his logic circuits enough that he didn’t feel like he was ashamed of him. Gods, nothing could be further from the truth.

‘You wouldn’t even touch me,’ Duo said softly, turning his head away.

‘When did…?’ Hiiro stopped and thought back. He couldn’t remember Duo reaching out to him but that didn’t mean he hadn’t. Suddenly he realized that maybe he did have a problem with touching his lover in front of his father but it had nothing to do with Duo. It was more the fact that his dad had never approved of his ‘frivolous affairs’ as the old man had put it on several occasions. His heart shook, Duo was no affair. He’d been a total ass.

‘Shit, your right,’ he said softly, still trying to get a grip on the entire thing. ‘Damn, Duo, I’m sorry. I didn’t even realize… wait!’ he barked as the braided boy turned to walk away. ‘It’s not like that!’ he insisted, cutting off his escape and taking him by the shoulders. ‘I am not ashamed of you!’ he said firmly. ‘It’s him, he’s never approved of me in this respect, but…’ he added as Duo started to pull away. ‘I don’t care. Duo, I love you more than life itself. I’d shout it to the heavens this very moment if I could. Damn, I’m sorry I hurt you!’ he gasped, falling to his knees and hugging him around the hips tightly. ‘I never want to do anything to hurt you, it was just... I was stupid … I didn’t think. I was…’

‘An ass,’ Duo supplied, sniffling as he laid his hand on Hiiro’s hair.

‘Thoughtless,’ Hiiro added, feeling his heart start to beat again.

‘I don’t hafta put up with this shit, ya know,’ Duo groused, playing with his hair.

‘Of course not,’ Hiiro chuckled, squeezing him tighter.

‘Just so ya know,’ Duo replied, sinking down into his arms.

‘I am so sorry,’ Hiiro told him softly. ‘I could never be ashamed of you.’

‘Shut up,’ Duo told him then he kissed him warm and soft. It only took a moment for the heat to permeate the prince before he growled and snatched him up in his arms and carried him into the nearest room so they could make up properly.

They laid low the next day, taking the time to do a little recon on the occupation then Hiiro led them to the shrine to await his father’s arrival. He had no idea how the man intended to get away from the palace but he never doubted for a moment he would pull it off. Sure enough, at precisely midnight his father walked into the shrine with two soldiers at his side.

The men followed him up to the alter where the Emperor stopped to light an incense and pay his respects. The two soldiers never knew what hit them as they fell unconscious to the floor. The Emperor stood up and turned to face his deliverers, his smile waning slightly as he took in the faces of Wufei and Duo then looked around for Hiiro. The smile faded into a concerned frown as the prince stepped up behind Duo and slipped his arm around his waist but it was short lived. The man regained his composure quickly.

‘Come,’ he said, leading them deeper into the shrine. ‘We have little time,’ he added, ushering them through a door. Hiiro noticed his father glance at where his hand held Duo’s as they walked down the hall. Duo had opted to once again remain cloaked but Hiiro could feel his approval in his grip and it lightened his heart. He only hoped his father would come to grips with it quickly. He had no desire to unsettle the man.

‘You must leave Earth tonight,’ the Emperor told them. ‘Go to Annon Shugi. There, the warrior Zechs Marquise will join you. He is a powerful ally; you’ll need his help.’

‘That’s Milliardo’s alias,’ Hiiro voiced curiously.

‘Yes,’ his father replied, once again glancing at Hiiro’s hand in Duo’s. Hiiro dropped the boy’s hand in favor of slipping his arm around his waist to emphasize his commitment. His father looked less than pleased. ‘Hiiro,’ he said, stopping suddenly beside a large double door and looking between the two boys. ‘It is imperative you follow my instructions in this,’ he told him. ‘My decisions are always in the best interest of the people. You must understand...’

‘What have you done?’ Hiiro asked, pulling Duo closer to his side.

J sighed softly then set his jaw and looked his son in the eye. ‘You have been betrothed to the Princess of Annon Shugi,’ he said firmly.

‘What?’ Hiiro barked, aghast. ‘How could you do such a thing!’ he growled, abandoning his lover in favor of waving his arms around in disgust.

‘This union is politically sound,’ his father interrupted. ‘I’m sorry, Hiiro, but you must think of your people first,’ he added, flashing an aplogetic look at Duo that almost begged for his assistance and understanding.

‘How will it help my people to hitch me up to that bubble headed twit?’ Hiiro exclaimed, his dark blue eyes flashing in frustration.

‘There are many worlds that will openly stand behind you if we unite. Annon Shugi has great political influence in the Cosmic Council…’

‘Fuck the Cosmic Council!’ Hiiro barked. ‘I’m already in love,’ he glared at the old man. ‘With him!’ he added, indicting Duo. ‘And I’m staying with him. End of story.’

‘Hiiro, I realize he is a beautiful boy but...’ he father began but let his words trail off when Hiiro rounded his blazing eyes on him again.

‘Yes,’ the prince said in a deadly whisper. ‘In more ways than you could possibly imagine. I love him, Father. I will not marry this girl.’

The Emperor sighed and let his tension run out of him. ‘I’m afraid you have little choice,’ he told him. ‘If you refuse, there are many who will take it as a personal insult. We can’t afford to have world’s turning against us right now, I think you can see that. We need this union, Hiiro,’ he told him pleadingly.

‘It’s only a marriage of convenience,’ Duo offered from his place in the shadows. Hiiro turned to him, shocked by his words. Duo only chuckled and stepped out of the darkness, leaning in to kiss him gently. ‘I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let something like this stop us from winning this fight,’ he said. ‘If this will win us some allies in the Council then it might prove worthwhile.’

‘But Duo…’ Hiiro objected but Duo laid a finger to his lips then kissed him again a little deeper this time, ignoring the soft sigh that slipped from his father’s lips.

‘Just don’t like... touch her or anything,’ Duo said when he pulled back. ‘Ya know? That shit really just creeps me out,’ he added, cringing a little as he stepped back.

Hiiro looked like he wanted to say more but the Emperor took that opportunity to put an end to the conversation by opening the doors and ushering them through. It turned out to be a lift that went down for what seemed like forever.

‘You can leave from here,’ the Emperor told them as they descended.

‘What about the fleet?’ Wufei asked.

‘That shouldn’t be a problem,’ the man replied. ‘But things will heat up quickly once you’re on your way so you must meet on Annon Shugi as soon as you can.’

‘Meet?’ Quatre asked. ‘We’re not going together?’

‘It would be impossible,’ the man smiled as the lift doors opened ‘The cockpits are only designed for one pilot at a time,’ he explained as all their jaws hit the floor.

They walked out onto a catwalk high above a huge hanger where workers were milling about and running here and there but they really didn’t notice them. All they could see were the five gargantuan war machines that stood like the pillars of heaven along the hangar wall.

‘Oh, baby I’m home,’ Duo said softly, just before they all heard a whizzing, zipping kind of noise. Hiiro got just a glimpse of the cable the boy had sent to embed itself in the I beam in the ceiling before his lover was sailing through the air in a sweeping arch that landed him on the shoulder of one of the great mecha’s. A moment later he’d slipped down onto the open hatch in the chest of the giant and slipped inside. Hiiro got a cold chill as he got a good look at the thing. It was Duo all over.

‘He’s chosen well,’ J chuckled.

Hiiro’s eyes then fell on the behemoth to its right and he felt that chill waft over him again.

‘That’s Wing Zero,’ his father informed him. ‘I designed it specifically for you,’ he smiled.

‘You designed it?’ Hiiro asked bewildered as he gazed at the thing.

‘It is unique among its brothers,’ his father told him. ‘Listen and you will be unbeatable.’

‘Trowa,’ Quatre breathed, leaning on the rail and looking at them. ‘Isn’t it beautiful?’

‘That one,’ the tall boy smiled, stepping up behind him and slipping his arms around his waist.

Quatre grinned and looked back at him. ‘How did you know?’ he asked.

‘Wild guess,’ Trowa replied, giving him a small kiss. The suit in question resembled an angel; he’d known there could be no other for his beauteous lover. He favored the one with the big guns himself. Wufei had already climbed down to the floor and was checking out the green one with the dragon for a right hand.

‘Ah, shit! Hey, Hiiro!’ Duo’s voice suddenly thundered throughout the hangar. It appeared he’d figured out the mecha’s sound system. ‘Check this shit!’ he said, then the huge machine wavered and disappeared. ‘HOOOOYEAAAAAA!’ Duo crowed happily as the rest of them broke out laughing at his enthusiasm. Even J was chuckling, which warmed Hiiro’s heart to no end.

They had little time to get to know their new friends but Hiiro was determined to speak to his father alone before he left so once he’d familiarized himself with the basics he went off in search of the man. He found him in a small laboratory with G discussing future plans for the great suits.

‘May I speak to you?’ Hiiro asked politely, not wanting to be rude to his father’s old friend.

J regarded him for a moment then replied, ‘You are a free man, Hiiro. The decision in the end is yours alone. However, consider what there is to gain from the match before you refuse.’

‘I can’t marry her,’ Hiiro told him gently. ‘I love Duo.’

J was quiet for a long moment before he spoke again. ‘I barely knew your mother when we wed,’ he told him. ‘And I, too, was in love with another when I married her but that is what was best for everyone involved. I grew to love her very much over time, however. At least give it some thought and humor the girl before you make your decision.’

‘My decision was made the moment I gave Duo my heart,’ Hiiro insisted.

‘Then perhaps you should ask Duo what your heart truly desires,’ G interjected coming to stand behind J and resting his hand on his shoulder.

Hiiro started to respond but the look in G’s eyes, the way his father sat perfectly still made him pause and consider. When the reality of what he was implying hit him he about fell over.

‘You...you’re... oh gods,’ he stammered, reaching for a chair. ‘I never thought... I mean ... you seemed so appalled by my... shit... how long? Damn, since before mom?’ he wondered as his world spun round and round.

‘Your mother was a patient and remarkable woman,’ G informed him. ‘It was devastatingly easy to fall in love with her.’

Both of you?!’ Hiiro gasped, feeling a bit ill.

‘She would have it no other way,’ his father informed him. ‘I didn’t want to see you hurt,’ he explained. ‘I had hoped you would be wed before someone stole your heart away. Things worked out for us,’ he added, glancing back a G. ‘Until Tuberov took her away. I didn’t want to see your heart broken as I feared mine would be when I chose to marry. It is possible to give yourself to two people if you’ll only try to work it out.’

‘How about 5?’ Hiiro groaned, slumping down in his chair.

‘Five?’

‘Never mind,’ Hiiro sighed. ‘We should get going.’ He’d had just about all the true confessions he could stand for one night. He’d deal with the marriage issue later.

G disappeared somewhere while his father walked with him to see him off. He was giving the prince some last minute information on Wing Zero when Quatre appeared in the hatch of the huge mobile suit Sandrock, a towering angel of death wielding two thermal sickle enforcers. The blond boy shone in the chest of the huge mecha, a light that brought the machine to life as he smiled and rode the cable down to greet them.

‘Oh, Hiiro it’s so wonderful!’ the blond gushed, throwing himself on the prince and extracting a long happy kiss which Hiiro accepted with no small amount of vigor. ‘Mmmmm,’ the blond boy moaned gleefully as he chuckled and pulled away. ‘It’s incredible!’ he added, glancing only briefly at the odd look on the Emperor’s face. ‘We could defeat an entire legion with these!’

‘And so we shall,’ Wufei grinned as he joined them. Hiiro still held the blond boy in his arms but let him rest comfortably to the side as the raven haired boy approached.

‘Lacroff goes down this night,’ Hiiro agreed with a huge grin.

‘As well as her sister ships,’ Wufei agreed, leaning in to brush his thumb over the prince’s wet lips before he gave him a small kiss. He turned to J and added ‘You have ….’ He paused at the look on the man’s face. ‘My congratulations on an epic a...chiev...ment…. are you well, Sire?’ The Emperor was looking a little green around the gills. Hiiro intercepted the obvious questions that were about to spill from the Emperor’s mouth by turning to call to Trowa who was just touching the ground.

‘Are we prepared?’ the prince inquired, leading the slight blond boy and their companions toward the tall boy.

‘Yes,’ Trowa replied, smiling when he saw the bright expression on his lover’s face. ‘Your people have done an exemplary job,’ he praised J as he slipped in and kissed Quatre softly. The blond boy melted into his arms, leaving Hiiro to stand on his own once more but the prince didn’t seem bothered by it.

‘Hiiro?’ J began softly but at that very moment a bit of shadow from somewhere off to their left suddenly sprang on the prince, bowling him over and dragging him to the ground. When they stopped the prince lay on top of the ebony form as it wrapped itself around his shoulders and hips and kissed him madly. ‘Hiiro?’ J said a little louder as he watched his son fall deeper into the bit of night. ‘Hiiro!’ he barked, finally gaining some response from his son as he pulled back and looked into Duo’s glittering violet eyes.

‘Yo, J baby!’ the longhaired boy sang. ‘Man did you ever outdo yourself this time!’ he praised, rolling over so he was on top of Hiiro as he kissed him again. ‘Oh,’ he said, popping back up. ‘Where the hells G?’ he asked, looking around ‘His fingerprints are all over this thing,’ he added, springing off the prince and leaving him to lay there trying to catch his breath as he slipped up in front of J and smiled.

‘He’s... checking the …’ the Emperor’s words slowly stilled as he watched Trowa walk over to help Hiiro up but instead of allowing himself to be pulled from the ground the prince playfully jerked the tall boy down into his arms and replaced the cold spot Duo had left with the tall boy’s warm body.

Duo glanced over his shoulder at them then turned back with an even bigger grin on his face as he backed into Wufei’s arms. ‘Whatever, I don’t have time to go roust his ass anyway,’ he smirked then snatched Quatre into his arms and bounced him around happily as Hiiro and Trowa rejoined them.

‘You know G?’ Hiiro asked, brushing Quatre’s bangs out of his flushed and smiling face as Duo held him.

The longhaired boy took the opportunity to steal a small kiss leaving the blond boy even pinker than he already was. ‘We’ve got some history,’ he admitted, turning that kiss into a snack as he nibbled down the boy’s neck. Quatre moaned softly, prompting him to turn and push him against Hiiro’s chest as he intensified the assault.

Trowa chuckled as Hiiro’s arms came up around them. ‘We don’t have time for this,’ he admonished, reaching out to extract his flailing lover.

‘NnnnNNN,’ Duo whined as his treat was stolen away. He consoled himself by sinking into Hiiro’s willing arms and pouting. ‘Fine,’ he said cutely. ‘But let’s meet on Beta prime before we get together with her worship’.

‘That,’ Hiiro said, kissing his head. ‘Sounds like a perfectly delicious idea,’ he smiled, slipping his mouth to the boy’s neck.

J started to open his mouth to speak again, clearly befuddled by their behavior but Duo beat him to it. ‘Lock ‘n’ load, baby cakes, we got us a field to plow!’ he barked as they all headed for their respective suits. ‘Oh, and goose G for me,’ he called back as he boarded ‘That cloak is kick ass! Ta,’ he smiled as he disappeared into the chest of the huge machine.

J stood for a moment and watched them all power up then chuckled and shook his head as he cleared the launch pad with the rest of the crew.
