Ch 10
First there was pain, dull and throbbing at the base of his skull, then the light faded in. Moving his head proved only to make it worse. What had happened? He groaned and tried to open his eyes, only to squeeze them shut again as the increased light level burned his retina. ‘Geez, what hit me,’ he groaned, forcing himself to roll over and squint into the light. ‘Duo,’ Wufei replied. ‘Oh… yeah,’ he moaned, lying back down. Horizontal was ok for now. ‘What happened?’ he asked, looking over to see his Chinese teammate moving to stand next to his bed. ‘They haven’t arrested you,’ the Chinese boy told him. He bent over and looked into his eyes, pulling them open a little so he could see the pupils well. ‘Arrested me?’ ‘Duo assassinated Hanes,’ Wufei informed him, feeling the back of his neck with his fingers. Hiiro’s brows knitted together as he finished explaining. ‘He knocked you out so it wouldn’t look like you set it up. They’re arguing that he used you to get to Hanes, then disappeared after the hit.’ ‘Shhhhit,’ Hiiro hissed. Wufei’s fingers felt damn good on his sore head. The Chinese boy smiled then leaned down and kissed him softly. ‘That’s from Duo,’ he told him when he pulled back. ‘Said to say he’s sorry,’ he grinned. Hiiro smiled and sighed as he relaxed into the delightful feeling of the raven haired boy’s hands. The moment his eyes closed he felt Wufei’s tender lips on his again. The kiss was soft and gentle and drew a heat from the bottom of his belly that saturated his throat and chest. ‘That’s from me,’ Wufei smiled. ‘Just because,’ he added when Hiiro looked at him curiously. ‘His pardon didn’t last long, did it?’ Hiiro chuckled as Wufei stood back up. ‘He never expected it to,’ Wufei pointed out. ‘There are too many monsters living off the system. He’s never let laws and bureaucracy stop him before. I can’t see why he’d start now.’ ‘Shit, we need to find him,’ Hiiro said, trying to sit up but Wufei pushed him back down. ‘He’ll find us,’ he assured him. ‘Wufei would you like some ... Hiiro!’ Quatre beamed at the Japanese prince when he saw he was awake. ‘How are you feeling?’ he asked, coming to his side. ‘Like someone bashed in my damn head,’ the prince groaned. ‘Mmm,’ the blond boy sympathized. ‘Here,’ he said, leaning down to kiss Hiiro’s lips. The pain in his head slowly ebbed and was replaced by the euphoric light that always accompanied one of Quatre’s kisses. The blond boy pulled away before the heat could grow to a frustrating level, however. ‘Thanks,’ Hiiro smiled. Quatre happily returned the sentiment and brushed his chocolate bangs out of his eyes. Trowa came in then and sidled up behind Quatre. ‘They’ve cleared you,’ he informed him. ‘Listed you as yet another victim of the terrible Toorima,’ he grinned. ‘What about the speech?’ Hiiro asked. ‘Well,’ Wufei sighed. ‘You managed to piss them off. They’ve contacted your father and asked him to rescind the declaration of war.’ ‘I didn’t declare it. But I’m going end it,’ Hiiro stated, gazing out the darkened window. ‘That’s kind of what your Dad said,’ Wufei grinned. Hiiro chuckled. He’d half expected his father to disown him but it didn’t matter. Either way he was determined to put an end to this. It was nice to know he had his father’s support, though. Something caught his eyes outside, an odd flash of something... violet. He smiled as Duo’s visage slowly melted into view. Hiiro had no clue what he was standing on but there he was, staring at him from beyond the shadows. ‘Wufei? Would you mind opening the window?’ Hiiro asked, letting his grin widen as Duo’s bright smile lit up the outside. ‘There’s not exactly a lot of clean air on ...’ the Chinese boy’s words trailed off into a bemused chuckle as the window slid open and Duo poured into the room. He’d barely touched the floor before he was curled up at Hiiro’s side kissing him warmly. Hiiro drew him close and let his hands re-familiarize themselves with his anatomy as he drank deeply from his mouth and relished the feel of his body against him. ‘Mmmmmm,’ Duo groaned, sinking deeper into his lover’s embrace. ‘Fei,’ he breathed softly, reaching out behind him. The Chinese boy took the offered hand and allowed himself to be pulled up behind the violet eyed boy until his body molded to his back. ‘You two mind playing watch dog for while?’ he asked as he popped his cloak and let it fall to the floor. Quatre sighed and smiled at the trio as they began to disrobe one another, sharing kisses and caresses as Wufei crawled completely into the bed with them then he turned and led his tall lover from the room. ‘It’s beautiful how they fit together isn’t it?’ the blond boy asked dreamily once they’d closed the door and taken up their guard position. ‘You miss him,’ Trowa said softly, pulling him back against his chest. ‘Hm?’ Quatre hummed. ‘What more could I want?’ he sighed happily, snuggling down into Trowa’s arms. ‘He loves you, too,’ Trowa replied. Quatre started to say something but decided against it. He knew it was useless to try and deny it to his lover. Trowa seemed to know his thoughts even before he did. He hated to admit it and he really didn’t understand it but he did miss Hiiro. It was hard to comprehend how he could possibly want more when he had everything he’d ever wanted right there in his arms but there was no denying it. He did miss the Japanese boy. ‘I’m sorry,’ he told the green eyed boy, feeling a little ashamed that he’d need to apologize. Trowa chuckled. ‘For what? Loving someone?’ ‘Wanting someone else,’ Quatre explained holding him closer. ‘Don’t apologize,’ Trowa scolded, squeezing him. ‘Duo’s a bit of a tasty treat, as well,’ he added, chuckling at the incredulous look the comment caused in his lover’s deep-sea eyes. ‘I told you,’ he added more seriously as he turned him and kissed him gently. ‘I won’t come between you,’ he reminded him when he pulled back. Quatre’s eyes widened a little at the implications of that remark but he grasped it fairly quickly. It was exactly what Trowa had said the day he’d told him he loved him but it wasn’t until that moment he actually understood what he’d meant. ‘You’ll always hold my heart,’ he whispered as he snuggled down into his arms. ‘I always have,’ Trowa replied softly, smiling contentedly. ‘Ah... Shit!’ Wufei panted, falling back onto the bed, his chest heaving as his world spun around and around. ‘To...told’ja,’ Duo gasped. ‘Mother ffffahhh ah shit! Wait!’ Hiiro groaned, trying to hold the Chinese boy still as the sensitivity was still such that he couldn’t stand the movement. ‘Wait,’ he breathed again, sliding himself slowly out of the Chinese boy’s body. ‘Ahhh, man,’ Wufei moaned, pulling Duo down on him harder now that he had more freedom. The braided boy groaned and leaned down to kiss him. ‘Told ya you’d like it,’ he grinned. ‘Jesus, that was incredible,’ the raven hared boy admitted happily. ‘Now,’ he added, grinning impishly. ‘I’ve gone full circle; all that’s left is to get you to try a woman. AHHH!’ he barked as Duo jumped off of him. ‘Shit, leave the damn jewels in the chest will’ya!?’ he groused, holding himself protectively. Duo had jumped to the other side of Hiiro and was kind of hiding behind him, glaring daggers at their Chinese lover. ‘Ok,’ Hiiro said suddenly. ‘What the fuck is up with you and women?’ Wufei quickly traded his painful groan in for a giggle fit as Duo curled up under Hiiro’s arm like a five year old hiding from his daddy. ‘He’s... he’s,’ he could barely get the words out, he was laughing so hard. ‘Gynephobic!’ he finally gasped. ‘What?’ Hiiro breathed, pulling the longhaired boy tight and kissing his head as he began to chuckle. ‘How in the hell did you get to be gynephobic?’ he asked sympathetically. ‘Nuns,’ Duo replied. ‘What? Did they beat you or something?’ Hiiro asked. ‘Women belong to god,’ he told him. ‘Would you sleep with god’s old lady?’ ‘You believe in god?’ the prince asked. He’d kind of gotten the feeling his maniac lover was an atheist. ‘I did when I was five,’ Duo replied. ‘Whatever, doesn’t matter,’ he shrugged. ‘Women are creepy. I don’t know how the hell you can stand to touch them.’ ‘You touched that little girl at the orphanage,’ Hiiro pointed out. ‘She’s a kid not a woman,’ Duo argued. ‘So when do they become women?’ Hiiro asked. ‘When they grow boobs,’ Wufei laughed. ‘You don’t like boobs?’ Hiiro sniggered. ‘Can we just move on?’ Duo groused. ‘But they’re so soft and squishy,’ the prince teased. Duo shivered and cringed, ‘Yeah,’ he retorted. ‘Kinda like an earthworm. No thanks. I’ll stick with hard, toned and lickable,’ he added, running his tongue up Hiiro’s chest.’ ‘Mmm,’ the prince moaned happily. ‘I can live with that,’ he smiled as he accepted the kiss Duo was offering him. ‘Don’t get comfy,’ the braided boy told him, pulling back. ‘We’ve got work to do.’ ‘Hm?’ Hiiro grunted. ‘You promised to come with me,’ Duo reminded him, getting up to get dressed. ‘What? Now?’ Hiiro asked, sitting up as well. ‘We need to be off this rock before morning,’ Duo informed him. ‘Tuber’s none too happy with you right now. We can’t give him time to get anymore ships in the area before we fly this coop.’ ‘But… should we do this?’ Hiiro asked, slipping into his pants. ‘Won’t they be expecting it?’ ‘Who cares,’ Duo snorted. ‘I’m not leaving without hitting him. Besides,’ he added, clipping his cloak back on and stepping up on the window sill. Hiiro watched as he slowly faded from view. ‘You know what a cockroach I can be.’ ‘Yeah,’ Hiiro grumbled, pushing his foot in his boot. ‘But I’m more of a big red bull.’ ‘Have ‘em ready by dawn,’ Duo’s disembodied voice told Wufei as Hiiro stepped up onto the window ledge. The next moment the Japanese prince vanished, leaving the Chinese boy to finish dressing by himself as he grinned and shook his head affectionately. He paused a moment as he started to leave the room then went back and searched through the sheets until he came up with a small tube which he stuffed in his pocket grinning from ear to ear. Hiiro felt his heart soar. It was almost as if he could fly. Duo had him around the waist with one arm as they glided from one spot to another on the breeze. He felt as if he was invisible, invincible, a drop of liquid with the power to walk right up to anyone, anywhere and pluck the very soul from their body and there was nothing they could do to stop him. He was a shadow on the wind. His heart was hammering so fast from the sheer exhilaration of traversing the outer shell of the planet’s crust he could hardly catch his breath when they suddenly appeared in a dark speeder parking lot somewhere in the Martling district. ‘Damn!’ Hiiro gasped, chuckling from the sheer excitement of the trip. ‘How do you do that? Nothing human can fly like that,’ he grinned, running his hand through his hair and trying to shake off the rush. ‘Anti gravity,’ Duo’s voice said softly. ‘You wanna live I suggest you stop dancing around in the light and screamin’ like a banshee,’ he added softly. Hiiro’s eyes widened when he realized what he’d done. His head jerked around trying to locate his lover but he was nowhere to be seen. ‘Here,’ Duo called from a dark corner. Hiiro squinted then caught sight of the purple glimmer in his eyes and went to join him. The moment he crouched down beside him the boy kissed him and started stripping him of his shirt. ‘D...Duo, what’re…’ His shirt had disappeared and his pants were mostly gone before he managed to get the two words out. ‘Put this on,’ Duo instructed as he felt something strangely silky and heavy pushed into his hands. When Duo released him he was buck naked and had an ebony cloth in his hand. He realized as he unfolded it that it was a cloak just like Duo’s. ‘Thanks,’ he said a little uncertainly as he wrapped it around his shoulders. ‘But isn’t it going to get a little chilly under here without...’ the moment he latched the broach at the throat the material came to life multiplying and wrapping itself around his body in a tight cocoon. When it was done he stood masked in the darkness. The cloth had become an ebony skin that covered him from neck to toe; even his hands were cloaked in jet black gloves. There was a certain style to the garment that made him feel so comfortable, as if he’d dreamed it up. ‘What is this stuff?’ he asked in that almost whisper Duo had been using since they’d arrived. ‘Little trick I picked up from a stripper on Vegas 9,’ Duo replied. ‘What happens if someone takes it off you?’ Hiiro grinned, fingering the broach. ‘If someone gets close enough to take it off, you better be dead,’ his lover informed him. ‘Hiiro,’ he added in a deadly whisper, pulling the prince down close to his face. ‘Do exactly as I say.’ Hiiro was more alarmed by the touch of desperation in his voice than he had been about the Battleship Lacroff. ‘Stick to the shadows, stay close and if you believe someone has seen you stay perfectly still. Don’t look them straight in the eye.’ He pressed a small knife into his lover’s hand. ‘Leave no one that sees your face alive.’ Hiiro started to object but he kissed him then pulled back. ‘Make sure no one sees you,’ he instructed. Hiiro understood what he was saying. If no one saw him he wouldn’t have to kill anyone. ‘This man must die,’ the braided boy said with finality. Hiiro felt his heart speed up again as Duo’s amethyst eyes darted between his; the raw emotion rolling around in their depths took his breath away. ‘Damn it… I do love you,’ Duo suddenly gasped then kissed him so passionately Hiiro felt his soul sizzling in the heat but it was gone as quickly as it had come. Duo took a moment to look him dead in the eye and whisper ‘Don’t die,’ before he was moving from shadow to shadow. Hiiro was amazed at how he could suddenly see him and track his movements. It wasn’t so much that he could actually see him with his eyes but his heart knew exactly where he was. He smiled and followed. It was absolutely amazing how many dark places there were in the world. The feeling of self empowerment was a thing to be reckoned with by the time they’d made it to their destination. It was just so damn easy, flitting from shadow to shadow, moving among the people without them even knowing they were there. There were several times Hiiro could have easily reached out and taken a woman’s purse or slit a man’s throat and they’d have never even known he’d been there. It was like being a ghost. The cloak was the most amazing aspect. He’d thought at first it would most likely take some getting used to, to keep from tripping over it but the thing seemed to have a mind of its own, clinging to him and aiding in his absence in this realm. He wasn’t sure what it was exactly but it didn’t feel or act like anything he’d ever come across before. It shifted as if it just barely hung in this dimension and though it was heavy it was a comfortable weight that made him feel secure and forced his movements into a fluid stream of motion. It was like a thing alive and he found himself instantly addicted to it. It took so little time to traverse the building he was still analyzing the feel of it when he found himself standing in a shadow at Duo’s back. There was a man lying in the bed sleeping peacefully, two young girls lay with him. One was dark haired and tucked possessively under his arm; she looked to be about fourteen. The other was a sandy blond and appeared to be dead as her head was lolling off the end of the bed. She was no older than the first. Hiiro’s mind flashed on a little girl in a crimson city as she grunted and pulled intolerantly on Duo’s hand telling an old priest how Duo had brought his hero with him. That little girl had only missed this fate because she was too young to waste food and water on waiting for her to mature. Suddenly he understood Duo’s insistence to stop this man. ‘Keep to the shadows,’ Duo thought out loud. Hiiro could comprehend it no other way because his ears refused to believe they’d registered any sound then his lover was moving through the inky blackness just this side of reality. He slithered up to the bed and laid a hand on the girl’s neck. She took a deep breath then laid perfectly still, her sleep so sound Hiiro had thought for a moment Duo had killed her as well. Once she’d been taken care of he turned his attention to the man laying next to her, running one finger gently down his forehead to the tip of his nose, waking him softly. The man slowly opened his eyes as Duo pushed his hood back and looked down on him expressionlessly. Hiiro watched, sinking further back into the shadows with each passing moment. This was not the man he’d come there with. This wasn’t even a human being. The creature hovering over the man on the bed was so breathtakingly beautiful the man actually smiled as the inky darkness surrounding the boy began to shift and change. Did the man think he was dreaming? That this was some wonderful visitation from an angel? Duo looked down at him so softly and with such compassion it took his breath away. Hadn’t he come here to kill him? Didn’t he hate him for his crimes against humanity? Slowly the ebony presence surrounding the boy began to solidify and the man’s contented expression slowly fell into one of stark terror as the cloak stood out behind him in the form of great black wings. The man was clearly too terrified to move as he shook in fright under the dark wraith that had once been Hiiro’s lover. Duo smiled as he lifted a small cylindrical staff between them. Hiiro’s breath caught as the boy’s violet eyes began to boil and the smile curled demonically. The man began to shake violently as a two foot, green thermal blade crackled to life from the end of the staff right in front on his nose. Hiiro’s heart was thundering as he shrank back from the terrible image hovering above the man in the surreal, half light of the room, the great black wings standing out from his shoulders as he passed his judgment. He felt himself shake right down to his very core. This was not Duo. This wasn’t even human. No way. Even though he knew those wings weren’t real, they were just the cloak. Even though he knew that face and how soft those eyes could be in the dim light of passion he couldn’t reconcile this creature with the boy he’d fallen in love with. Suddenly he wanted this to stop. He wanted Duo back. He stepped from the safety of his shadow and called his lover’s name. ‘Duo...’ The creature on the bed slowly turned its head leveling its crystalline, amethyst gaze on him as it smiled and hissed softly, ‘Do you wanna live forever?’ Then it was gone and the man’s head rolled off the bed to thud on the floor. Hiiro found he didn’t need Duo to get back out which was a good thing because the boy had completely vanished. He swam through the shadows just as he’d watched Duo do on the way in and soon found himself in the terminal beneath their ship. He’d felt a desperation to find the longhaired boy since the moment he’d disappeared and checked every shadow as he passed but he’d seen no sign of him when he caught sight of his comrades on the upper level near the lift. ‘Hiiro,’ Quatre smiled but the smile fell fast into concern as the prince approached quickly. ‘Is Duo here?’ Hiiro asked, looking around again. ‘No,’ Wufei replied a little alarmed. ‘We thought he was with you.’ ‘He vanished,’ the prince scoffed in frustration. ‘Shit, lets go,’ the Chinese boy said suddenly, nodding to a line of men that was walking their way. Hiiro glanced at them and recognized them as a patrol like the one that had greeted them upon their arrival and followed his Chinese lover into the lift with the others. They found the ship much as they’d left it except for the squadron of troops surrounding it. Hiiro hung back in the lift while Wufei checked it out. No one was quite sure exactly what to expect and since the prince was clothed like the Toorima himself they thought it wise to do a little recon before they walked out into the middle of a war zone. It turned out they were looking for Duo for the Hanes assassination. Wufei had done some quick talking and made some rather unfair demands using both his and Hiiro’s titles as weight to back them up but he managed to get them clearance to leave once the ship had been checked. ‘We’re not leaving without him!’ Hiiro barked as the Chinese boy powered up the ship. ‘He can take care of himself,’ Wufei reminded him sternly. ‘We have to get the others out of here,’ he said, looking back at the prince compassionately. ‘Now,’ he added to emphasize his meaning. Hiiro shook his head. He thought of Quatre and felt his chest tighten. One part of him wanted to see his friends to safety but his heart refused to betray his longhaired lover. ‘Let me off.’
‘No,’ Wufei replied charging the engines. ‘I can’t leave him.’ ‘Admirable sentiments,’ Duo’s voice sounded behind him. Hiiro spun around so fast he almost got tangled in the cloak. ‘Duo!’ he heard himself breathe then he was on him hugging him tight and kissing anything that got close to his lips. ‘Gods, where’d you go?’ he breathed, pulling back and taking him by either side of the head while Wufei lifted them off and took them out over the city. Duo stood looking uncertainly at him for a long moment and Hiiro felt his heart melt. For the first time since he’d met the longhaired boy he saw a glimmer of fear in his eyes. That glimmer hit him like a wrecking ball. Duo was afraid he was going to turn him away after what he’d seen. The boy had bared his soul and now he was waiting for the hammer to fall. Would Hiiro accept him for what he truly was? Or would he turn away from him. ‘Oh, no baby, never,’ Hiiro whispered as he smiled and brushed the tears that started to fall down his cheeks away. ‘I’ll always love you,’ he promised, kissing him sweetly. ‘Always.’ Duo favored him with a small smile then sniffed cutely as he rubbed at his nose and said, ‘Fei?’ ‘Hm?’ the Chinese boy replied. ‘Get me off this rock.’ ‘Where to?’ Wufei smiled. ‘Vegas 9.’ ~ * ~ tbc... |
