You didn’t honestly believe I’d fall for that? I’m not that naive.” “This isn’t a joke!” Wufei growled in exasperation as we set down on a branch at the edge of camp. “It’s certainly not funny,” Trowa agreed, standing beside his lover protectively, though I noticed he discretely refrained from touching him. “Akami,” Quatre sighed as said guardian/wolf spirit/guide came out of his tent and I wondered if Wufei and Meilan realized he was the wolf that had saved them at the river. “Would you please explain to them that fairies are stories made up to entertain?” “I would,” Akami smiled, raising his arm and I spurred Zero to take flight and land on his forearm as he explained, “Were it true.” “Thank you for your help,” I offered the moment we were secure and watched in amusement as Trowa caught Quatre’s elbow when his knees went weak. “They’re…” “Where did you go?” Meilan asked, ignoring Quatre’s distress. “To Heaven,” Duo smiled, lifting into the air as he added to Akami, “Where is Magami?” “Nursing his wounds, I should think,” the wolf god smirked. “I expect he is not so damaged as to weaken his need?” Duo returned. “They’re real,” Quatre finally managed. “So it would seem,” Trowa agreed. “Hiiro?” the blond whispered reverently. “I’m fine,” I assured him. “It is possible I will regret defying him in a great many ways,” Akami finally replied to Duo’s question. “I’m sorry,” my lover sighed, lighting on his outstretched hand. “No need,” he smiled, raising him to his cheek and I felt that hateful beast in my chest rear up and growl again as he added, “You know my heart will forever be thine.” The vow held a thread of something ancient in the words and left me feeling decidedly awkward, almost as if I had broken something very precious when I claimed Duo as my own but then he smiled at me and I knew things were as they should be. Akami might have loved him forever but Duo’s heart was mine alone. “I will have need of your strength tonight,” my lover sighed, taking flight again and I saw the fearful remorse in Akami’s eyes as Duo hovered before him and asked, “Please… do not fail me.” “Hiiro,” Quatre cut in. “What in the world is going on?” So we built a fire and sat down to tell the tale. Zero went off in search of a nearby roost while we explained to our comrades the delicate nature of our adventure. I noticed as the hour grew late that Akami kept zoning out, his eyes drifting closed while his breathing shortened and his skin waxed with perspiration. It was clear his body was preparing for a joining with Magami and I wondered how long they had been lovers. It soothed my spirit somehow to think that someday I might look back and be unable to count the years Duo and I had been together. I found I liked that thought very much but while I was contemplating forever with my love the night suddenly went deathly still, the darkness deepening until shadow and light seemed wholly separate entities caught in an endless battle for supremacy and Akami’s eyes snapped open to reveal fiery, amber orbs. All eyes turned to the sudden appearance of Magami as he strolled confidently into our midst, but for once his attention was not fixed on the humans, but Akami himself. Our guide trembled under his gaze and I heard Duo whisper his name in warning. “Duo?” Akami hissed desperately, his passion growing in beaded droplets on his brow as his mate began to shimmer as he advanced. “Please,” Duo begged and I wanted to just smack the stupid wolf man upside the head if he didn’t get it under control but then Magami was changing, his form growing in length until the shining light dimmed and my jaw fell freely into my lap. There was nothing human about the creature before us save for the bipedal form. He had arms and legs though they so faintly resembled that of a man one might question their perception. His skin glowed softly as if the rays of the moon high above were embracing him in their silvery light, his eyes shone like the coals of the fire and his silken hair was as white as starlight as it draped the ground trailing three feet behind him where he trod. He was beyond beautiful, untouchable in his divinity and zeroed in on Akami’s glowering eyes. I didn’t understand what it was Duo needed from him but it was clear Akami was already losing to his mate. “Come,” Megami sang in a voice possessed of a chorus of angels, his tone caressing even my skin with pure delight and I saw Akami shiver under the touch but it was Duo’s name on his lips when he opened his mouth. “He has forsaken you,” Magami reasoned, holding out a beckoning hand to his lover. “Soon his time will end and you will forever be mine.” “I have always been yours,” Akami breathed, closing his eyes against the onslaught of emotion as he forced himself to say, “But I cannot abandon him.” “Foolish pride,” Magami chuckled, laying a gentle hand to his lover’s cheek and Akami leaned into the touch with great relish. “We have so little time.” “I cannot abandon him,” Akami repeated and I felt a sudden chill wash through the camp that even sent a shiver down Magami’s spine. “It would appear,” the wolf god smiled as he retreated, “You will get your wish.” “Trowa?” I heard Quatre whisper, his terrified tone mirroring the darkness that had gripped my heart and I pulled Duo close as the very shadows themselves crept inward, bringing with them a cold the likes of which I had never known. It seemed to take an eternity that made me feel as though I might never be warm again but I wished for the silent cold when that voice came stealing along the night and made me want to find a rock to hide under. It was bad enough it made me want to flee but I felt violently ill when it whispered Duo’s name. He tried to pull away from me but I snatched him back so hard he yelped. I couldn’t let go, couldn’t breath, or think or do anything but hold him tight until he whispered softly… “Let me go.” It was his wish. No matter how badly I didn’t want it to be so it was his wish to confront this being so I forced my arms to release him. It ripped at the very fabric of my soul to allow him to move away but nothing cut deeper than the fact that he hadn’t even kissed me goodbye. I watched helplessly as he flew to the center of camp and hovered in the air over the fire. The voice spoke again and I heard Meilan whimper as she buried herself in Wufei’s arms but as much as I wanted to run I wanted to rush to Duo’s side a hundred times more. I clenched my teeth so hard my jaws ached as it spoke of boundless love and ultimate pleasures. I fought my need to burst forth and take him in my arms as it tempted and caressed him in ways that made me sick with jealousy and rage and I found myself on my feet closing the ground between us when it questioned my lover’s purity. “You have given yourself to another,” it whispered in quiet indignation and Duo replied only with a softly spoken… “I have.” I had only thought the chill had been deep before but upon his confession the cold intensified so suddenly it dropped me to my knees and froze the flames of the fire where they flickered beneath my lover. “Duo,” I rasped in the chill. “You have called him to me,” it hissed coldly and I groaned as I saw ice crystals form on Duo’s wings. “No,” he replied though his body shivered violently with the effort. “Duo!” I growled, feeling as if I were vomiting razorblades as I forced the sound past my frozen throat but it was nothing compared to the pain I felt when he said… “I offer myself in his stead.” “NOOOO!” I roared, letting my rage force me to my feet but there was suddenly a snarling wolf between me and my goal as Akami made good his promise and held me at bay. Duo’s eyes opened slowly, the ice crystals that had formed on his lashes cracking and flaking as he turned to smile gently at me and my heart shattered when he softly spoke. “I’m sorry,” he said so sweetly I suddenly understood. “But I cannot let you die.” I replied with the only thing my heart would allow. “Then I will follow you to hell.” We had no time to consider the repercussions of that proclamation as Zero suddenly swooped down and plucked Duo from the air. I gave a gasp as Akami lunged for them but missed and crashed into the ground whereupon I crowed my jubilation into the sky. The celebration was short lived however, when the night began to gather until a bit of darkness stood in the clearing, silken tendrils of shadow playing about its form like black satin in a stream all centered around two points of violet light that pulled so hard on my soul I had to physically fight to keep from falling into them. Then, quite suddenly, Duo’s half frozen body was dumped into my arms and Zero was perched on the tip of a frozen flame. Quatre and Meilan peeked out to watch the confrontation and I wondered at my feathered friend’s audacity until he began to speak. “Haven’t you grown tired of this game by now?” the eagle asked. “Is he willing to apologize?” Shinigami inquired. “He would show you a God’s gratitude if you would return,” Zero informed him. “Tempting,” the God of Death chuckled. “But how could I abandon so sweet a spirit as he?” he purred, indicating Duo with nothing more than his will. “Your affections do nothing but torment him,” Zero reasoned. “He has found his fate. Leave them to their happiness and come home.” “How can I believe?” Shinigami sighed. “When he sends a messenger instead of coming for me himself?” The temperature suddenly doubled as a light shone so brightly in the sky I swore the dawn had come early but I had never seen the sun descend to Earth before. I knew I was witnessing the appearance of yet another God when Duo shivered a quiet… “Hiruko.” The God of the Morning Sun. Hope sprang anew in my heart as I watched the glowing light come down to stand before the darkness. “I miss you,” he confessed and Shinigami sighed as a luminous hand caressed his cheek. “It is time to come home.” “But what about…” “His heart is complete,” Hiruko stated as he embraced the darkness and began their ascension. “Make him happy,” I heard Shinigami’s voice in the back of my mind and smiled from my toes to the end of time as he added, “Make him happy and I will never have need to come for you.” Then they were gone and I was left holding my own heart in my arms so I kissed him long and slow until his shivering had stopped and joy began to bubble up in his throat. I was aware of Magami leading Akami out of camp in his human form but the rest of us laughed for a good long time as we recounted the events of the night. Meilan vowed to do everything in her power to protect not only this forest but every undeveloped bit of land on the planet, getting a hearty cheer and declarations of devotion from her intended as well as Quatre and Trowa. The couple had forsaken their usual antagonism under the circumstances and Wufei had gotten down on one knee and proposed properly to his fiancée before the sun had risen. We made a pact that night that would last throughout the years and I took Duo back to our nest where Sunny happily relinquished it to fly off with Zero somewhere while I reminded myself of what I had won. We took our time reacquainting ourselves with all the pleasures of ultimate unity until our bodies were spent and there was nothing left but the sublime feeling of having him resting in my arms. I smiled as we lay in the dapple shadows of the afternoon sun and sent a silent thank you to its spirit, hoping that they were as happy as us. Duo stirred, sighing softly as he dozed and nuzzled into my arms and I felt the twinge of desire flutter through my chest but sighed and let it steep as I grinned and held him close because as long as Shinigami kept his promise, we had all the time in the world. owari :)
