"Why do I have to be the good guy?" "Because he's scarier that you are," Une explained matter of factly. "I am not scary," Hiiro pouted and even then he looked like he might take a finger off if you got to close. "Fine," I grumbled folding my arms and sinking into my seat. "You will be attending..." "St. Estion's under the guise of a transfer and foreign exchange students," I cut in impatiently. "We know, we read the file." "You're full cooperation is expected on this one Agent Maxwell," she reminded me... again. "Many of the students have disappeared without a trace in the past two years. I shouldn't have to remind you of the severity of the situation..." "Yeah, yeah, I get it ok?" I retorted standing to snatch the file off her desk. "ID the bad guys then blow'em to hell..." "This is not a military target!" "Life was so much easier during the war," I sighed but the comment did nothing to improve her demeanor. "How long before my incarceration?" "Hiiro will leave Friday. You are to follow as an American exchange student when he contacts you." "Can you give me a clue?" I inquired sarcastically. "I'll need time to infiltrate the local syndicate." "Fucking duh!" What was with these two? "A time frame Yui." "There's no way to calculate..." "Best guess." Geez. He glared but that had long sense lost it's weight with me. "Three weeks," he finally replied. "Though with the reputation that's being planted about me I wouldn't be surprised if I'm recruited sooner." "Bad boy's come to town huh?" I snickered wondering what sort of cover story they'd set in the rumor mill about Mr. Iron's His Underwear. "Well, I'd like to get this over with so get me in as soon as you can." "I'm not looking forward to this either," he informed me and I felt sort of bad for my attitude. He was the one that was going to have to pretend he was a degenerate in order to get close to the freaks we were trying to put out of business. "Don't worry, man," I grinned donning my cap. "We'll be in and out by the end of the month. With a little luck you might even get to shoot someone." "Duo..." "It was a joke!" Man. You'd think with all the drugs that woman takes these days she'd be more stable. Sheesh. My ears rang for half an hour after she blew her top and kicked me out of the office until after the mission was completed. I had nothing to do for the next couple of weeks other than read a file that only took me twenty minutes the first time and stare at my feet. It sucked that I was going to be stuck in high school for an undetermined amount of time but I knew the benefits of being prepared. It seemed like there was nothing amiss at St. Estion's at first glance. The school had a good reputation and was fairly high up on the desirable campus's roster but over the past couple of years over twenty of it's students had gone missing or turned up dead. I looked over the detailed reports on each of them finding no similarities other than they had, at one time or another, attended St. Estion's. They were male and female, all high school age but that figured, some with high grades and some with low. No matter how long I looked or how deep I dug into their pasts there was just nothing to link them together. They didn't attend the same classes or clubs, some were party animals while others had kept to themselves. It didn't make sense and that was exactly why Hiiro was there trying to get himself inducted into whatever force was behind the mysterious disappearances. I spent the later part of the second week doing a little recon, sneaking around Berkshire, the little town that had sprouted up after the scool had been built. It was a nice little place with old fashioned shops and a drive in. There was even an ice cream pallor but I didn't dare stop by for fear they might recognize me once I had moved into the dorms. I caught sight of Hiiro late one afternoon and knew for certain he would be calling me in soon when I saw the crowd he was hanging with. There wasn't a single one of them that didn't set the little hairs on the back of my neck on end. I didn't much care for the way Hiiro looked standing next to them either. He'd always been a strange one. Back during the war he fascinated me because I'd just never met anyone as bat shit crazy as he was. As time wore on however, we got to know each other a little better and I realized one day that he really is bat shit crazy and left it at that. I honestly think the guy likes it, I mean carrying a gun, the whole power trip gig, he actually gets off on it which I have to admit creeps me out just a little bit. I ducked back into a shadow to watch for awhile and see if I could get a heads up on what I might be in for. There were three guys with him, a tall, dark blond with spiky hair and a pointed chin, another with small, hard eyes, a wicked smile and dark, shoulder length hair, and the third was a girl but she didn't look like she belonged in the group. Her style was completely wrong. She reminded me of Sunday afternoons and homemade pie and I wondered what she was doing there until the guy with the spiky hair almost throttled her when he threw his arm around her and jerked her close. He was laughing at something the dark haired boy had said and not paying one bit of attention to his girlfriends winching as she was half strangled. I felt myself growing angry at Hiiro for not doing anything about it then remembered he was supposed to be one of them and swallowed the foul taste that had risen into my throat. Looked like playing the good guy was going to be the better half of this job. I didn't even want to think about what he was having to tolerate in order to keep up the illusion that he was one of them. That's got to be the hardest thing about deep cover, turning your head while the people around you are breaking the law... or worse. From the look on the girls face I had a feeling things were going to get pretty messy at some point down the road. The call came two days later, a little earlier than Hiiro had estimated so I hoped it meant things were going well though I knew it could also mean things were incredibly bad indicating the possibility of a need for haste. Either way I soon found myself standing in Dean Prichards office awaiting the canned `this will be you're home, don't fuck it up` speech. "Mr. Maxwell," he smiled seeming in a hurry when he breezed in and it caught me a little off guard when he offered his hand and continued with, "Sorry for the wait. There was a small altercation in the cafeteria over who got the last dumpling." His laugher was strange enough that I wasn't quite sure if he was joking or not so I simply shook his hand and replied, "No, sir. I only just arrived." "I understand you're very interested in science," he smiled motioning for me to sit while he took his behind his desk. "Chemistry has always been a hobby of mine," I supplied mostly to confirm the lead story that had been planted about me. "Yes," he grinned and I got the feeling he was looking forward to furthering my supposed ambitions to become a great chemist. The interview went on in that context, I was informed where the dorms were and which room would be mine. My roommates name was Aki and I snickered wondering how many times he'd gotten into fights over having his named sneezed instead of spoken. There was a chemistry club I was already sighed up for and the president, Naru Takomi, was thrilled and couldn't wait to meet me. I suppose it figured when you considered my file said I had won every science fair I'd been in since grade school and was currently one of the most sought after young chemists known to man. I thought Une brushed it on a little thick myself but if Prichards reaction was any indication it had done the job. The man acted like he was ready to have my kittens, at least until we got to the usual dress code/uniform part of the talk. "You realized you are required to dress appropriately during your stay here?" he asked looking over my jeans and black leather jacket. "I'm afraid my uniforms haven't arrived yet," I explained. "They should be here before first class on Monday." All that smiling was starting to make me ill. "Of course," he nodded amiably but I felt my jaw tighten when I saw that old, familiar flash in the back of his eyes. "You're hair..." "It's against my religion to cut it," I dead panned the old excuse. His face did some odd things for a minute but I would still never have expected him to gust a breath and chuckle, "Heavens, no. It's quite lovely. However did you managed to grow it so long?" Ummmm... well, that was... different. "It's uh... I mean... I've never cut it," I stammered more than a little off balance from his reaction. "Appease the Gods and all." "May I?" Ok, now this was just creeping me out but I stood and turned to show him the length then sat my ass back down feeling very much like I'd been violated somehow. The feeling grew even more uncomfortable when he smiled that patronizing smile and informed me... "I think you'll be very popular here." Like I said, at first glance the place seemed like any other school but after my first couple of days I started getting the feeling I had stepped into the twilight zone. Most of the teachers were ok though Mr. Nickles didn't care for me much. I couldn't blame him though because he was the chemistry teacher and in order for me to keep up appearances as the chem guru I had embarrassed him by showing him up in his own class on the first day. My roomy was a strange piece of work. The guy barely spoke, kept strange hours that made it almost seem like I had the room to myself and spent exuberant amounts of time in the shower. I was befriended by a boy named Migite that everyone teased mercilessly about having hair on his palm. Migite means `right hand` if you didn't know, you do the math. He was a brain and a member of the chemistry club so it seemed fitting for me to hang with him. By a stroke of luck, the girl I'd seen with Hiiro and his pals was also in the chemistry club. Her name was Mika and I had pegged her dead on. She wasn't the type to run with a rough crowd like that but I didn't know her well enough to question her about it yet. It was because of her however, that I ran into Hiiro on my third day. We had stayed late to finish up some preparations on a demonstration we were working on for chem class when he and his acquaintances came by to pick her up. I really don't understand why nice girls like Mika end up with fucking assholes like Ichino Haiko, I think the guy must've used a stapler to put those spikes on his head `cause his brains appeared to have leaked out the holes. "What the fuck took you so long?" Ichino snapped snatching her around the neck with his arm to pull her forcefully to his side. "S...sorry," she stammered doing her best not to drop her bag and books while he strangled her. "Hey!" I barked ignoring Hiiro's glare. He might have to put up with this shit but I sure as hell didn't have to. "You wanna let the lady breath, asshole?" "She's good at holding her breath," he chuckled squeezing her tighter. "Proved it just last night when she swallowed this," he laughed as he gripped his groin and shook it at me. I glanced at Hiiro wondering just how deep the shit we had stepped into was but was greeting with nothing but a small smile that was as evil as his posy-mate, Kira, who stood beside him watching the show. "Duo," Migite said softly at my shoulder seemingly unwilling to look directly at the three of them. "We should go." "Mika..." "She's my bitch, pretty boy," Ichino informed me proving it by licking then entire length of her cheek. "You need to learn your place." "You need to learn some fucking manors," I retorted and would have taken great satisfaction in feeling his jaw crack but my fist, as quickly as I had thrown it, was suddenly stopped by the steel grip of my partner as he caught in mid air before I could connect. It surprised me as much as pissed me off and I figured out real quick just how short of a leash he was on when the bones in my hand started to crack and sent me crashing to my knees. The look in his eyes was different, strange and hungry when he bent to stare me down and quietly intoned, "Know your place." It was the first time in a long time I was frightened when looking into those cold, blue eyes and I understood the depth of his meaning when he warned, "Unless you'd rather take hers." I rubbed my aching fist and let them drag Mika away with little choice but to trust Hiiro's judgment but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something very, very wrong going on. "Are you nuts?" Migite gasped quietly dragging me out into the back courtyard in the opposite direction the others had gone. "He was hurting her," I reasoned still favoring my bruised fist. Hiiro is a very strong man, if he'd have gone much further he would have broken something. I didn't get why he felt he had to push so hard. "You better watch your back," he warned. "Those guys eat guys like us for breakfast." "Doesn't mean you shouldn't fight back." "No," he sighed stopping to emphasize his words. "I mean they actually `eat` guys like us." Oh dear lord. "Last semester," he said stepping closer, his eyes darting around to check the area and my stomach turned over at the thought of what he might confess. "They caught Aki Sunao behind the gym and made him..." he looked around again and I tensed because he had gone white as a sheet as he whispered, "suck them off." Son of a bitch! "You said `eat` Migite!" "Yeah!" he nodded in horror. Ok, not to belittle the boy's violation but it wasn't the same. It really isn't that uncommon for guys to pick on each other like that, doesn't make it right and probably explained Aki's tendency to keep to himself but it sure as hell beat cannibalism! "They ever... you know... pick on you?" I asked not having to try to hard to sound disgusted. "Me?" he snorted resuming our walk. "Naw. I'm not good enough for them to bother with." "How good do you have to be?" I scoffed. No wonder everyone acted weird on that campus. "Better than me," he sighed. The sound held a world of meaning that hadn't been spoken in his words but the way he was looking at me told me real quick he figured I was definitely good enough for them. What a bitch, first the poor guy has to deal with the fear that he's gonna get raped by a couple of guys then he has to deal with the degradation that he's not up to standard enough for them to want. "Don't worry," I grinned. "I can handle myself." "I hope so," he sighed again. "Since Hiiro joined them no ones safe." "You mean the Japanese guy?" I asked innocently wondering what my partners rep had become. "Shhhh!" he hissed waving frantically to silence me as he glanced around again then whispered, "That guys totally insane. He put Kino and Tashiki in the hospital last week for walking in while he was making Aki give him a blow job." "..........." Hiiro? "Stay away from those guys," he warned leaning in to whisper softer yet, "They even say he's been to see Katatsu." "Who's Katatsu?" I whispered back. "The Game Master," he mouthed but no sound had come out then he suddenly turned away and was gone before I could fully memorize the name. Hm. Sex games. That didn't really seem too strange considering the state of the world these days, kids were often found gang banging by the classroom anymore but upping it to rape was another story. The insinuation that someone was using organized crime to terrorize and even possibly murder the students nudged it up to a problem that called for immediate neutralization. If Hiiro was caught up in it I could understand the need to turn his head even if he was witnessing nonconsensual sex but rape was pushing it and forcing Aki to suck him off was just out of the question. No way I could believe Hiiro `Rule Book` Yui would stoop that low. Now busting up a couple of smart ass guys that ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time was a given but the rumor mill had to have exaggerated the rest. I needed more information about what was going on from
a more reliable source than the rumor mill so I headed back to my
room in the hope I might run into Aki before he disappeared for the
night. There is a sense you developed as a soldier, it sets the hairs
on your neck on end and tells your body to drop a load of adrenaline
in your gut when something's not right so when I heard the sound of
a woman gasp in pain I was already prepared to kick some ass when
I burst into the boys room in the dorm. ~ * ~ tbc... |
