Epilogue

A year had inconspicuously passed before any of them had realized it. Life in Zion was, as promised by their resident demon, pure heaven. Long days filling with laugher and joy followed by thunderous nights desperately wrapped in each others arms. There were quiet times as well, like the time as they sat gathered in the castle on a cool night enjoying a game of Taskit. Something Quatre had invented that helped them wile away the happy hours in each others company.

Each hybrid would set a task for the one chosen. If conceived and executed properly the chosen one would then be allowed to ask one in the group for a reward. This often led to long make out sessions between certain members but no one ever really complained. It was Wufei’s turn at that moment and Duo’s privilege to set the task. The demon lay comfortably against his lover’s chest as he reclined against a pile of pillows, his expansive, ivory wings laid out behind him whereas Duo had folded his close to his back making him small and slender enough for Hiiro to coddle. Trowa had Quatre snuggled in his lap. The foal had been the subject of a horrible joke earlier in the evening leaving him red faced and subdued any time anyone mentioned anything about a horn, however, the lion cub was more than happy to console him.

Wufei had been very happily wedged between his two favorite lovers, a long, platinum hared, silver winged hybrid dragon called Zechs and the mate he’d already been taken with when Wufei decided to make him his, a black named Noin, when Duo decided to set his task to something that would inevitably extract him from the toasty warmth of their combined body heat.

“Light the watchtower,”

“What?! From here?!” the dragon gasped knowing the difficulty of the deed. The large pile of logs and dry grasses that adorned the top of the tallest tower in the castle was used to announce to the kingdom that a holiday had been declared the next day. There had been quiet a few holidays that year since Duo was immensely fond of the flames.

“If you would rather yield…” Duo grinned knowing he’d never get to finish as Wufei burst from his nest and snapped.

“I do not!” Both Zechs and Noin laughed and turned to each other to replace the warmth of their missing mate. “Fine,” Wufei said after staring out the window at the silent tower for a long moment. “But if I succeed,” he added grinning demonically as he turned to face the wraith. “I want you in my bed tonight,” he hissed in his harmonic tone letting his black tongue slither out to remind him of just what pleasures he was offering.

“Alright,” Duo smiled seemingly unaffected as he shifted in his lovers arms. Hiiro remained quiet composed whereas Wufei lit up like a Christmas tree.

The dragon took his time to measure his mark calculating distance, the strength and direction of the wind and the pull of the land before steadying himself, his black eyes glittering like diamonds as a small ball of fire suddenly erupted from his mouth and sped straight at the dark tower. It looked very much like Duo was going to be his plaything for the night until the last moment when the fiery ball suddenly made a sharp turn speeding straight up into the night sky where it exploded like a huge fire work lighting up the entire castle grounds.

“That’s cheating!” Wufei snarled at the amused looking Eagle. In the world of man where he’d found himself alone in his species he had been limited in the range and strength of his telekinetic abilities but here, where he was surrounded by countless couriers of his will they had proven infinite. Sometimes he really did feel like the God his eagle friends believed him to be.

“Your proposal was unacceptable,” Hiiro replied coolly drawing his smirking lover closer to his chest.

Wufei fumed but had no choice but to accept the Kings decree. His distemper faded quickly as another option came to mind. “Alright then,” he smiled. “If I do it then Duo has to tell us what species he is!” he bargained knowing no one would have any objection to that, save, perhaps, for the demon himself but Duo only gazed at him as the corners of his mouth curled up.

“Alright,” he agreed rekindling the light in Wufei’s black eyes.

Actually, they were all looking rather excited over the prospect of having that mystery solved, all except Hiiro who again looked as coolly unaffected as before. This time when the dragon spit his fireball it came out at a much faster rate and grew much larger as it whizzed through the air and crashed into the tower setting it instantly ablaze. Even Wufei turned an accusing eyed on their Lord as he knew he was not capable of such a feat but Hiiro only smiled gently and took a sip of his wine.

“The task is done,” the dragon stated before anyone could voice an accusation and kill the opportunity. “Fess up, what are you?” he demanded slipping back into the waiting arms of his lovers.

“I am Shinigami,” Duo replied as if it should be quite old news by now while he fed Hiiro a grape.

“We know that!” Quatre whined rolling his big, blue/green eyes. “But what is your spices of origin?” he persisted.

“I am,” Duo replied moving to straddle Hiiro’s hips so he could feed him the grapes with his mouth.

The others sighed in exasperation. It was always the same, double talk and rounded words that led no where but Wufei wasn’t about to give up this time.

“You agreed,” he reminded him. “So tell us,” he insisted stubbornly but his resolve was fading fast under the wave of heat Duo and his lover were starting to put off. The fledgling’s hands rounded the demons tight form and pulled him firmly against his hips; his lips suckling at the grape in his lovers mouth as he drew it and his tongue into his own in the process. The others watched, as they often did, as Hiiro rose slowly with Duo wrapped longingly around his body and moved to carry him away.

“Stop!” Wufei snapped abhorred by the lack of a proper answer. “He promised!” he insisted. “What is he?”

Hiiro paused long enough to look back over his shoulder and smile as he replied, “He’s not a hybrid,” before resuming his journey and leaving the lot of them with their jaws in their laps. Wufei didn’t snap out of it until well after they’d disappeared into their chambers.

“Then what the hell is he?” the dragon huffed.

“If he’s not a hybrid then he has to be a … purebred?” Trowa reasoned.

“That’s impossible,” Noin scoffed chuckling at the very idea.

“You believe Hiiro would lie?” Zechs countered making a very good point.

“He can’t be a purebred; He’s half human,” Quatre reasoned.

“Is he?” his lover intoned setting a very chilly tone ringing through the room that was followed only by the momentary sound of silence.

“He must be,” Wufei mused not sounding at all sure of his words. “His face and body are human,” he pointed out.

“An ape has five fingers and a thumb,” Trowa countered “That doesn’t make it human.”

“A creature that is neither man nor beast?” Quatre breathed clearly unsettled by the possibility.

The lot of them took a long moment to look at each other, each pondering their own hypothesis about the origin of their demonic friend and all of them sure of only one thing. The answer to the question had only served to double their curiosity and deepen the mystery of just what in the world Duo truly was.
