Summary: When Duo discovers an ancient bottle his life his irreversibly altered by the beautiful, blue genie that resides within.

AN: This was written some years ago in response to a fic I read. I so enjoyed the character dynamic’s I couldn’t resist borrowing the idea and writing a fic of my own using a variation of the character profiles. The original fic was Blue Bottled Belly Dancers... by clarysage ^_^ I liked it so much I wanted more so I wrote this but that was uh... years before I ever thought to post anything. I don't really remember how closely mine follows the original but I hope it's entertaining. ^_^ Thanks everyone!

"Bottled Blue "

Ch 3

Breakfast was a simple fare of local fruits and hard boiled eggs. Duo noticed a distinct improvement in the flavor of his mango after Hiiro had taken a bite. Indeed, the entire meal took on a more deliciously exotic flavor as it progressed. The eggs smoothly shimmering briefly until the hens egg Duo had thought to eat had rearranged itself into quail. The dates were twice the size of everyone else’s and his juice took on a tangy flavor that seemed to sing of rare spices and candies. He flashed a reproachful glare at the smiling Jinn but couldn’t find it in himself t be angry with him when his mouth and stomach were full of such delectable sensations. The cat was given a complimentary bowl of milk by the waitress which it finished before jumping up on the table to lick Hiiro’s chin clean. Duo was once again taken by the strange intimacy between the two. It made him wonder just how long this cat had been around.

“Where are we going?” Hiiro asked around his mouthful of fur.

“Um... I thought maybe we’d just take in… the sights,” Duo replied stalling as the cat tried to crawl right inside Hiiro’s mouth. The amazing part was that the Jinn did little to stop it.

“Well, then,” the blue eyed boy smiled finally pushing the feline away. Duo was glad. Watching it lick his tonsils had been a bit much. “Perhaps you would allow me to show you around?” he said scratching his furry companion behind the ear.

Hm. Well, what better way to see an ancient city than with an ancient guide? And so… they were off. Duo paused in the road along the front of the café they’d eaten at when the cat slipped down an alleyway.

“Isn’t he coming along?” he asked a little concerned for it as he watched it jump up on a bin and gaze back at them.

“He has his own agenda,” Hiiro told him waving amiably at the large cat then Duo did a double take. Did he just see... wings? His concern for his sanity disappeared however; as he watched the cat spread its blue/gray wings and leap skyward.

“Holy shit,” the longhaired boy said flatly watching as it faded perfectly into the blue sky. “What in the hell is that thing?” he asked stumbling along as Hiiro tugged him down the road, his eyes still searching the sky for the cat but finding nothing but the blue expanse.

“Have you never heard of the Sphinx?” Hiiro asked impatiently.

“Sphinx?” Duo repeated. “I thought they were half woman.”

“They are what they choose to be,” the Jinn informed him.

“But that ones male right?” Duo persisted.

“He is.”

“So why would it choose to be…” the words died in his throat as Hiiro gave him a side long look that clearly stated he was being thick and he suddenly remembered Hiiro appeared to have a affinity for men. Great. His Jinn was a homo.

Homo or not he definitely knew his way around. He showed Duo things not even the locals knew about. Secret passages that led to hidden chambers under the city long forgotten by modern man. There was a small trickle of water that seeped from between two stones in a wall in the lower half of the common grounds that, when he tasted it, brought spring to his heart and the scent of flowers to his soul. He’d been drunk on that one drink for over an hour. Apparently, a Jinn had died there long ago and this was the remaining life spring of her soul. It made Duo wonder.

“Can you die?” he asked as they made their way through the dusty streets.

Hiiro didn’t answer at first pausing to admire a street vendor’s collection of rugs. “Yes,” he said finally moving along without a purchase.

“Then you don’t live forever like the fables say?” Duo asked saddened by the idea somehow. Hiiro shook his head pausing again to examine a line of brightly colored beads.

“I will age much the same as you,” the blue eyed Jinn told him. “Its just, as I said, I only age when I am not within the keep,” he reminded him.

“How’d you get roped into this gig anyway?”

“I was cursed and bound to the bottle by My Lord the Pharaoh Tutankhamun.”

“King Tut?!” Duo gasped choking on his chuckle as Hiiro glared at him like he’d lost his mind. “Sorry,” the longhaired boy laughed. “It’s just... wasn’t he just a kid?”

“He was beyond the age of accountability... around thirteen,” he explained at Duo’s curious gaze “And a noble king,” he told him sounding offended by Duo’s mirth.

“If he was so noble why’d you end up kissing a cork for the past few thousand years?” Duo asked regretting his choice of words the moment they fell from his lips. Why’d he have to be so damn sensitive?

“His wife,” Hiiro confessed after a time. “Ankhesenamun.”

“What did you do? Nail the boss’s wife?”

“…………..”

“Holy shit! You didn’t!?” Duo gasped.

“She... seduced me,” the Jinn confessed.

“It’s always a woman in’it?” the longhaired boy sighed.

“I was then bound to the bottle and forbidden to ever lay hands on a woman again.”

“Well, that explains a lot,” Duo chuckled. “So you just switched to men, huh?”

“Not really,” Hiiro replied “There was a reason My Lord was so distressed over my betrayal,” he told him giving him that `catch up` kind of look. It took a minute but…

“You were doing King Tut!?!”

“Shhhh!” Hiiro hushed him slapping at his hands and pushing him through a nearby doorway.

“Oh, relax” Duo chuckled. “The guys been dead for like... two thousand years already.” He again regretted his words the moment they slipped from between his lips as Hiiro’s dark eyes dropped to the floor. Man. He just couldn’t get a hold on the idea that his guy had pretty much just been there a couple of years ago as far as he was concerned. All that time in the bottle... did he remember it? Or was it just like yesterday for him that he lay with the boy king in Egypt? “I’m sorry,” he told him sincerely.

“He would have freed me had he not been killed,” Hiiro told him.

“I’m sure he loved you,” Duo soothed but Hiiro only snorted.

“He was Pharaoh,” he laughed weakly. “I was nothing more than a toy like so many others but… we were friends otherwise,” he told him.

Duo found he had no response to that whatsoever and looked around for a change of subject finding that they had inadvertently stepped into the lobby of the National Museum.

“Hey,” he smiled. “Let’s have a look around, huh? Maybe you’ll recognize something,” he wondered pulling him inside.

Hiiro, indeed, had an explanation for many of the items inside from the mundane house hold utensils to the most complex and beautiful statues and jewelry Duo had ever seen but the most captivating artifacts where the tapestries. There were dozens of them, each telling a specific story with the threads that made up their complicated designs. Kings, saints and servants, the great battles of Heaven and Earth and the lives of the leaders of the past all painstakingly captured in the delicate weave of the clothe. It fascinated Duo more than anything else he’d seen.

There was one in particular that he just couldn’t stop staring at. It depicted a huge battle that seemed to cover half the world, a gargantuan horde of soldiers moving across the land like a pack of ravenous wolves conquering and assimilating everything in their path.

“Hiiro... what is this?” he asked turning to find that he was alone.

He looked up and down the hallway wondering where his wayward Jinn had gone off to before dismissing it as a potty break or something and turning back to his study. It was truly amazing how the creator had accomplished such detail. So much time and patience was woven into the body of the cloth that it almost seemed to come alive. He could almost hear the shouts of the soldiers; feel the heat of the battlefield under his feet, the horses and the sound of men fleeing before the swell of armored lupine. He drew closer to the fabric until he could smell the scent of eons gone by. Oils and spiced wine, even the faint aroma of sex hidden deep within the texture of the threads then his eyes lighted on a small but ominously cobalt blue area deep behind the front line. His brow creased in fascination as he drew nearer to it. Could it be? Was Hiiro actually a part of this horrific scene? Upon close examination he was certain that it was true. The creator had captured the fine lines of his face much too well for it to have been any other. His eyes traveled the small figure marveling at the fact that he’d been just as beautiful during this era as well until they fell on a small golden chain that he held in his right hand. His mind raced wildly as he followed the golden links one by one, unable to breath at all when his eyes revealed the image of his own face woven into the cloth. There was no mistake. It was him right down do the violet eyes and chestnut braid and the sight of it filled him with utter terror.

“HIIRO!” he shouted tearing his eyes from the image and slamming into Hiiro’s firm chest. “Hiiro!” he gasped finding that he was shaking like a leaf but the blue eyed Jinn only stood quietly gazing down at him. Why did he seem so... tall all of a sudden? “Wh...what in the hell is my face doing on that tapestry?” the longhaired boy demanded foregoing the questions about his companions size for the moment but Hiiro didn’t respond. “Tell me!” Duo barked. “I want to know exactly why in the hell I’m in that picture!?” Hiiro’s eyes slid shut for a moment and when they opened Duo’s blood all but stopped in his veins as sapphire flames licked and swirled in their depths. His mind whirled knowing somehow, some way he’d messed up big time as the Jinn’s lips curled into an evil little smile and he replied.

“Yes… Master,” and the world suddenly turned upside down.

Duo felt his feet leave the ground and the sickening sensation of being turned top over bottom over and over again until suddenly he slammed into the ground, stumbled slightly, turned and threw up. He was vaguely aware of a commotion around him as he turned his stomach inside out but he couldn’t understand what they were saying then someone snatched him brutally by the hair on the back of his head and wrenched his head up. It was day and he was outside because now he couldn’t see a damn thing for the sun blaring in his eyes but he could hear men shouting in that strange tongue and smell the aroma of large animals, horses, goats, pigs, chickens from the sound of it and the low, anxious murmurs of feminine tones.

“Get the fuck offUFF!” he grunted doubling over from the blow to his stomach leaving him coughing and sputtering on the sand.

Sand? He was still in Arabia? Concentrate damn it! Yes... they were speaking Arabic but it was an odd variation that he couldn’t make head’s or tails of. He dared a glance to his left and caught a glimpse of the camp. Soldiers ran here and there. Another glance to the right confirmed the presence of the women. They were all cowering back from the commotion each dressed in what looked to be traditional harem garb right down to the golden callers around their necks and the veils over their faces. There must have been thirty of them, all done up in different colors with jewels and beads and intricate head dresses and he realized suddenly he damn sure wasn’t in Kansas anymore. He just caught sight of a large gray cat by the old stone well that made him want to cry out in recognition but it was at just that moment that he found a fist in the back of his hair again, his neck ripped back until he thought his back would break from the strain and a reeeeally big knife at his throat. Well... FUCK THAT! He hadn’t been the best in his judo class for nothing. A quick sweep of the legs and a well executed disarming maneuver reversed his and his assassin’s positions in the wink of an eye. He just hoped this guys life was worth something because if not he was going to be in a world of shit.

“Back off!” he growled at the milling soldiers as they drew their katana’s and advanced. “Crap... HIIRO!” he shouted. If the cat was there it only stood to reason the Jinn wouldn’t be far as well. “ALA HIIROALAADA! DAMN IT, GET YOUR SKINNY ASS OUT HERE!”

Slowly the crowd began to part and he got his first look at his wayward Jinn but he sure didn’t look like the Hiiro he knew. He was taller for one. About three feet taller actually, putting him a good foot over anyone else in the crowd and he wore the black and fur laden attire of a Mongolian Warlord, his bronzed chest exposed and his ethereal, cobalt eyes shining from beneath a black fur rimed helm complete with oxen horns. He looked like a god. Duo swallowed. Hard.

“Ala Hiiroalaadin,” the Jinn said smoothly, his tone almost a song on the breeze as he stood and crossed his arms to quietly regard the braided boy before him.

“Yeah, whatever,” Duo retorted. “Now, get me the hell out of here. This isn’t funny,” he told him but Hiiro didn’t move or even blink an eye.

“Get me out of here, damn it!” Duo roared already tied of the bullshit but still Hiiro didn’t respond. What was the deal? He’d never blatantly ignored him before. Duo looked around as the amused faces of the soldiers around him and for the first time started to get very, very scared. “Hiiro?”

“Hiiro?” the Jinn repeated looking thoughtful then he rattled off something in that strange tongue that everyone seemed to find very amusing. “Hiiro,” he repeated grinning at him. “I like it,” he told him stepping closer. “It amuses me,” he said holding out his hand and instantly the knife Duo had been holding his hostage with jumped out of his hand and sailed into the blue eyed Jinn’s palm. Duo jumped back from the downed soldier now that he was unarmed and backed away.

“Clever boy,” the Jinn smiled circling around him. “Tell me... did you succeed?”

“In what?” Duo spat. “What’s wrong with you? Why are you acting like you don’t know me?”

“Believe me,” Hiiro laughed low in his chest. “I would recall having ever tasted someone as sweet as you,” he grinned stopping in his circling to use the knife to lift the edge of Duo’s …

HOLY SHIT! What in the hell was he wearing? He was dressed like a damn girl! No… not like a girl but damn close! Hiiro and the others got a good laugh out of his astonishment before he clamped down on his pride and pushed the embarrassment of being in what looked very much like a dress aside. The laugher was still pertinent on the air when all heads turned and half the assembly dropped to one knee though Hiiro only turned and continued to chuckle. Duo could only assume this man must be the leader around here considering the way the others reacted to him and from the death glare he was leveling on Duo he had a pretty good idea that he wasn’t a very happy camper.

He and Hiiro had words that started out civil enough but soon the leader guy’s black eyes gleamed with fury and he was shouting and Duo swallowed the dry lump of stark terror in his throat when the larger than life Jinn fell to his knees. What was going on? If Hiiro didn’t know him did that mean this wasn’t the Hiiro he knew? It was the Hiiro from the tapestry? And if so where in the hell was the current Hiiro and why wasn’t he pulling him out of there!

His musing were brought to an instant halt when the leader... or what Duo now suspected was Hiiro’s Master in this era, marched over to the ring of girls and snatched one of them by the hair. Duo felt his feet move in her direction when she cried out but knew he had to stand his ground. He’d be killed for sure if he tried to help her. It was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do to watch as the man yanked her out of the line up and slapped her so hard it split her lip. She said nothing. She didn’t plead or beg or whisper a sound nor did she raise her eyes from the ground as he whirled on the Jinn and shouted a command. Duo watched as Hiiro’s eyes closed slowly then his blood froze as a blood curdling scream ripped through the air and the girl simply vanished.

He couldn’t believe it. He was in shock he could tell. His arms were cold and he couldn’t stop shaking. The girls scream echoing in his mind as he gaped at the boy he’d thought so kind and harmless until a few seconds ago. Why? Why had he killed her? Did he even have a choice or was it something like those invisible bands that had held him at bay when Duo refused him? There had to be a reasonable explanation but he wouldn’t get a chance to ask about it right then. He almost cried out when the leader reached out and snatched another of the girls to his side barking an order that put two more of them on his heals as he stormed away.

Duo felt sick again but there was nothing left in his stomach to throw up. He felt dizzy and weak and all in all completely exhausted as he stood there hoping beyond all hope that this was all just some horrible nightmare but he realized as he looked up into those cold, hurtful cobalt eyes it was all too real. He was really there, in the past with a Hiiro that not only didn’t know him but was the servant of a barbarian general. He didn’t dare to look into the Jinn’s dark blue eyes as he again circled him because this time those eyes bore no fascination, no curiosity and not mirth. They held only contempt, anger and ill intent and it hurt more than Duo ever wanted to admit to know he’d earned that gaze somehow. He wondered briefly if there was any way to put the light back into those painful eyes then his head exploded in pain as the butt of the knife in Hiiro’s hand sent him into darkness.
