He blinked, uncurling and looking into the blue eyes he could just make out with the help of the moonlight.
Out, he answered. Did I wake you?
No, a wolf howled and that woke me. I noticed you were gone. I hadnt fallen asleep yet.
Go to sleep, then, Heero.
Where did you go?
I called.
Heeros eyes widened, and then narrowed. Called? Why?
I felt something, Quatre said. Ive been feeling it for the last three days as we continued to head west. And I wanted to see if there would be an answer. Ive been calling out every night, but I only got an answer tonight.
Who was it? Heero asked.
Quatre curled up again. He lives in the village north of this one, about a days walk. He and his Guarded make tools for a living, things the villagers buy to make their lives easier.
And what did you tell him about us?
Told him we were travellers with no real direction. We didnt get much further than that; his Guarded showed up looking for him so I came back quickly.
Heero faced the ceiling thoughtfully. Now is not a good time to find me my spouse, he said softly. Assuming, of course, that it turns out that way.
Quatre sighed. Whats coming will come, Heero. I can tell you now that our reasons for travelling will not affect my decision. The Great Druids have their reasons for selections, and going against it because of our own reasons will affect not only us but them as well.
If it is them, cant we just come back?
If it is them, Quatre echoed. Then the Guardian, at least, would know too. Do you think he would sit back and wait for us to come back, whenever that is?
Dont you Guardians always preach about trust?
How would you feel if your spouse, chosen by the Great Druids, finds you and tells you that no matter what the Great Druids said, you cant be together just yet, but please wait?
Heero sighed. I take it that you couldnt have resisted calling out?
This isnt only for me, Heero, Quatre said. Its for you, too.
No, Quatre, Heero suddenly snapped. If that Guardian is your Answer and his Guarded is to be my spouse, youve endangered them, too. So shouldnt you have thought of them, instead of us?
The Great Druids have their reasons to do things their way, Quatre said patiently. And going against their wishes would not be wise.
Heero closed his eyes, turning away. So, you need tomorrow to call him, to see if he is your Answer?
Yes.
So I take it well be travelling north.
Yes.
Then Im going to get some rest. Unlike you, I actually have to do the walking.
Quatre reached out, tugging at a strand of unruly hair. Goodnight, my Guarded.
Goodnight.
