Part 1

“Trowa?” Duo sat up, rubbing his eyes. “Trowa?”

Silence greeted him. He looked to his left; the faint glow from the moonlight showed an empty spot beside him.

“Where’d he go?” Duo wondered. This was the third night in this week alone that Duo had woken up to find Trowa gone. It made him feel a little uneasy.

He reached up to his neck, tugging on the chain until he found the pendant. Pulling it to the front, he lifted it up, rubbing the smooth surface. He’d had it since he was born and it gave him some comfort.

Getting out of bed, he wrapped a cloak around himself and took the necklace off. Holding the pendant flat on his palm, he closed his eyes and spoke softly.

When he opened his eyes again, there was a small, green light pointing from it. Taking a deep breath, Duo slipped his shoes on and followed the light.

The light led him out of his small home and into the quiet streets, and he followed it even though it led him out of the small village.

It grew brighter though, as he neared some trees, so he shielded the light by putting the necklace back on and slipping the pendant under his clothes.

Inching forward quietly, he walked carefully past several trees, knowing that beyond it was a small clearing with a pond. Peering around a large trunk, he caught sight of his Guardian sitting on one of the large rocks. Beside him was another Guardian with blonde hair.

Trowa suddenly turned around, getting to his feet.

“Duo.”

Duo flushed and stepped out. “Trowa,” he greeted his Guardian. “I…was wondering where you were.”

In the blink of an eye, the blonde Guardian was gone.

“What are you doing awake? You should be sleeping,” Trowa admonished his Guarded.

“I know, but I woke up and you weren’t there, so…” Duo shrugged. “Who was that?”

“Another Guardian.”

“I didn’t know you had Guardian friends.”

Trowa walked to the edge of the rock before giving a light hop, moving easily to land on Duo’s shoulder. He tugged Duo’s earlobe.

“How did I get stuck with one of the nosiest Guarded ever?” he asked affectionately.

Duo chuckled, reaching to poke his Guardian lightly. “You’re avoiding my question.”

“You’re right.” Trowa made himself comfortable on Duo’s shoulder.

“Did he call to you?” Duo asked softly. “Or did you call him?”

Trowa sighed. “He called me.”

“And?” Duo asked apprehensively.

“And nothing. It’s the first time we’ve ever met. You know that I can’t talk to you about it.”

“Not it,” Duo said. “The Guarded of whoever calls you ends up being my spouse. You’d think that you’d allow me to be a little curious.”

“Relax,” Trowa said softly. “The Great Druids rarely make mistakes.”

“I’m not worried about mistakes,” Duo said, picking at his cloak as he turned back towards his home. “I’m just…curious. I mean, it’s not like the Druids set you up. You have a choice. You can turn the Guardian down, make another call, or answer another call. I can’t.”

“Trust me, Duo.” Trowa stood, floating up in front of Duo. “I am your Guardian. Your best interests lie in my heart. You know that.”

“But isn’t it hard?” Duo asked. “If the Guardian who you call has a Guarded that isn’t in my best interest, would you give up your significant other for me?”

“Trust, Duo,” Trowa said again. “Like I said, the Great Druids rarely make mistakes. There are very few in our lengthy history that resulted in poor matches between two Guardians and their Guarded.”

Duo nodded, knowing that was true. After all, it was his parents’ Guardians who had brought them together. He knew his parents loved each other very much and loved him very much, even though they disappeared years ago and he had no idea where they were. Trowa didn’t know either, but it was Trowa who had kept him safe all of these years, and Duo knew that if one didn’t trust his Guardian, the one couldn’t trust anyone.
