First it was Maxwell and now it's Yuy. Gary looked to Trowa. You start going loopy and I'm firing the lot of you. Go to lunch. Heero gladly left the SUV and made his way to the break room and all but collapsed in a chair at the table. He hadn't been able to concentrate all morning. Wufei had left a huge impact on him. He couldn't shake the memory of the sultry yet shocked looked on the Chinese man's face as he was driven to orgasm. Heero had been surprised when he woke up and found the man had only taken fifty dollars. What's with you? Duo asked as he grabbed his lunch from the refrigerator. He looked to Duo and Trowa. I... met someone this weekend and did something completely... out of character. Duo raised an eyebrow as he tossed his leftover spaghetti in the microwave. What'd you do? Have a one night stand? He cringed and violet eyes widened. Even Trowa looked surprised. You had a one night stand? It gets worse. How? Duo asked, sitting at the table. He stared down at the table, loathe to admit what he'd actually done. He took a slow breath. He's a prostitute. Since when did you pick up hookers? He shook his head. It wasn't like that. I stopped to ask for directions, he ignored Duo's grunted 'of course' and continued, and he said he'd give them to me if I paid him thirty dollars. He paused. There was more to it than that, but after talking to him for a while... He frowned. There was something about him. He said he'd charge half-price and asked me to show him what it felt like to be with someone he desired. Both Trowa and Duo were shocked. Trowa shook his head. I can't believe you followed through with it. Duo scratched the back of his neck. What'd he look like? Very attractive. Dark eyes with black hair down to his shoulders. He was haughty and arrogant at first, but then... he seemed so vulnerable. I left out full price, but he only took fifty. You must've really gotten to him, Duo said. Are you gonna try to find him again? He sighed. I don't know. I want to see him, but I'd be wondering if he left me and went to someone else. Trowa pursed his lips. You're setting yourself up to get hurt, Heero. He wants out of that lifestyle, he just doesn't know how to do it. Do you think he'd let someone take him in? Trowa asked. Heero shook his head. Probably not. He seems too proud; he'd probably see it as charity. Does he have a pimp or does he work on his own? Heero frowned and looked to Duo. I don't know. Why? Because, he only gets to keep a fraction of what he earns if he works for someone. If he works on his own, then it'll be easier for him to get out. Heero sighed and grabbed his sandwich from the refrigerator. Then I hope he works on his own. He was strong, emotionally and physically, but... he seemed so... helpless. ****** Wufei waited silently as the money was counted and set to the side. He licked his lips when the man sighed softly and looked up to him. It's a little short, isn't it? Sir? You took three trips on Friday, and two on Saturday. No matter how I figure it, there should be at least three hundred dollars more. Wufei swallowed. He knew Bruce had people watching them, calculating the time and what service was most likely offered. He'd been with Heero for several hours, much too long for a simple hand or blow job. I... I didn't... Bruce's eyes narrowed. You didn't take the money. Fear began rising in his chest and he shook his head slowly. No. He sighed. Why? Though knowing his answer would draw criticism, he couldn't lie. Bruce would see through it too easily. He... was different. Bruce pursed his lips and took two hundred out of the seven hundred he'd been given, holding it up toward Wufei. His brows drew together. Only two? Please, Bruce, I can't live off of just- Then you should have thought about that before you gave a john a freebie. Wufei closed his eyes briefly before taking the money. He shoved it into his pocket and left the office, brushing past Quatre and wandering aimlessly. Bruce owned them. They couldn't work the streets without his say so. He owned the building they lived in. He had them watched at night, which was a catch 22. His men kept them protected, but they also made sure they stayed in line. Wufei had no illusions about his life. Their plan of getting out would never happen. Bruce would figure it out and take more of their earnings so they couldn't save anything. He leaned against a chain link fence that surrounded a basketball court. Teenagers were laughing and shouting out challenges as they moved over the court. He'd never had so carefree a life; even before his father had kicked him out. His life had always been directed by another with no regard for what he wanted or desired. He sorely regretted taking Heero to bed. Not only because it cost him money, but because he'd never be able to forget how it felt being held in his arms. Being cherished. Being loved... even if he was a stranger. Wufei? He looked to Quatre. How'd it go? Four hundred. You? He looked away. Two. Two? Why? Because I didn't take the money Friday night. Quatre sighed. He's just being a jerk. Wufei rubbed the back of his neck. I'll have to go out during the week and hope someone takes. The utility bill is due on Thursday and rent on Friday. Six hundred won't even cover rent. Quatre bit his lip. I'll go out, too. We're running low on groceries. Wufei looked to him. I should have just taken the money. I understand why you didn't. The next week passed slowly, and by Friday morning, Wufei was in knots. He'd only had one taker during the week, and it was just for a hand job. Quatre had better luck, but they'd both lose at least half which would only leave them with two hundred total. Wufei stepped into Bruce's office with five hundred dollars, two hundred having gone to the electric bill and one hundred to Quatre for grocery shopping. Bruce gazed down at the money. You're two hundred short. Wufei cleared his throat. Couldn't get the rest. I can get it for you by tomorrow. It was a useless offer. He knew how Bruce handled his prostitutes when they were short on their bills. Bruce looked to the bodyguard in the room and tilted his head. The man stepped out of the office and shut the door. Bruce turned in his seat and began undoing his belt. Come here. He took a breath and rounded the desk, lowering to his knees as the man rolled a condom down his length. Make it worth me overlooking your lapse in judgment, Dragon. He licked his lips and put his all into the act, ignoring how his stomach rebelled and his mind screamed at him that there was no way he could fall any lower than he already had. Pride and honor left him completely. He was nothing but a shell, waiting to be thrown away with the rest of the garbage. ****** Quatre leaned against the shelves. We have to stop meeting like this. Duo jumped slightly from his study of two different brands of cleaners. He grinned. Any opinion? Quatre pointed to the bottle on the left. The most environmentally friendly and the fumes aren't so strong, either. Duo tossed it in his cart, glancing over to see the blond had an actual buggy as opposed to his normally hand-held basket. Big shopping this weekend? He nodded. We're running low on a lot of things. How was your week? All right. Yours? Same old, same old. They moved down the aisles in companionable silence for a while. The guys and I are going out tonight. You wanna come? Quatre shook his head. Sorry, Friday nights aren't good for me. Tomorrow then? he asked hopefully. Hm... it'd have to be during the day. I'm really busy with work on weekends. Duo frowned. Every weekend? For the foreseeable future. Sorry. He shook his head. It's all right. I know how demanding work can get. What would be a good time tomorrow? Three or four. I have to be ready to work by eight. Duo nodded with a grin. It's a date. Quatre flushed slightly, the first blush to grace his cheeks in years. I don't think... He bit his lip. I like you, Duo, but I'm not sure anything could... happen between us. Nothing more than friendship. Duo leaned his elbows on the handle bar of the cart. You like me and I like you, what's the problem? Part of Quatre screamed for him to just go ahead and tell Duo the truth, but the other half was terrified of what his reaction would be. He stared helplessly at Duo and the brunette sighed. I won't press anymore for now. Okay? He released a breath. Thank you. So what are the plans for tomorrow? Dinner and a movie? It'll be a little early for supper at three, don't you think? He shrugged. So we'll watch the movie first and then go out to eat. Quatre grabbed a box of vermicelli noodles off the shelf. Will it just be us? Duo studied him. Is that what you'd prefer? He glanced over his shoulder. Yes. He nodded. Then it's you and me. Quatre smiled. Thank you, Duo. They finished their shopping and went their separate ways, Duo's number tucked in Quatre's pocket. Normally he walked back home, but due to the large amount, he called a cab and sat on the bench outside of the grocery to wait. Angel? His head snapped sharply to the side, eyes falling on the man who he'd helped discover his sexuality. He quickly pushed a smile to his lips. Hi, honey. Are you feeling better? He blushed slightly. Sorry I broke down like that. Quatre shook his head. It isn't uncommon. The man hesitated. Will you be... out tonight? He stood as the cab pulled up and nodded. Same corner, I start at eight. He ducked into the cab with his groceries. He really hated meeting johns randomly like that, and he was extremely happy the man hadn't seen him while he was talking to Duo. He returned to the apartment and set the groceries on the table. Wufei came into the room, somewhat pale, and helped to put the groceries away. Quatre looked to him after five minutes of utter silence. What happened? He raised a shoulder, not lifting his eyes from the bag he was digging cans out of. I made up for the money we were short on. Did he hurt you? No. He finally raised his eyes to Quatre. We'll never get out of here, you realize that, don't you? Quatre's brows drew together. Don't say that. One day... he trailed off and Wufei forced a smile. One day. ****** Quatre smiled as Duo went on about the movie, repeating certain parts he found hilarious and asking Quatre's opinion. He had thoroughly enjoyed it. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been to see a movie. He and Wufei typically just rented if there was something they really wanted to see. His thoughts trailed to Wufei, who was, as always, lazing about the apartment. He'd given him a warning glance when he'd left. Wufei was not happy with the situation, mainly because he was afraid Quatre would end up getting hurt. Still with me? He shook his head and looked to Duo. Sorry, I was just thinking. About what? My roommate. I got the third degree before I left. Duo raised an eyebrow. What? He doesn't like me? He doesn't know me. Quatre sighed. It isn't that. He's just worried that I'll get hurt. Duo looked back to the road as the light turned green. I'm not out to hurt you, Quatre. I know, and so does he. We just live... crazy lives and getting others... involved isn't really the wisest thing. What? You work for the mob or something? He chuckled. Not hardly. So what do you do? I told you. Odd jobs. Duo pulled into the parking lot of the Olive Garden and glanced to Quatre. Okay with you? He glanced to the clock on the dashboard. 5:20. As long as there isn't too long of a wait. There wasn't much of a wait and fifteen minutes later they were seated. Duo gazed down at the menu as he ordered a sweet tea. Quatre ordered water and looked down to his own menu. I didn't intend for you to chip in last time. Quatre looked over his menu to the braided man. I'm not a mooch. Letting me pay when I ask you out isn't being a mooch. I'm paying tonight. If it weren't for the fact his funds were depleted, he would have argued the statement. As it was, he simply nodded. If you want. He immediately started looking at prices and Duo cleared his throat. Get whatever you want. Why are you doing this? I'm just some random guy from the grocery store. You don't really know me. Duo chuckled. That's why I'm doing it. I want to get to know you. You have a great personality and you're fun to talk to. Their drinks arrived and they ordered their food. After the server left, Quatre looked back to Duo. And it has nothing to do with looks? Hey, I'm not that shallow. Sure, you're very attractive, but if there isn't anything between the ears it's a waste of time. I don't base my criteria for being interested in someone on how they look. Quatre dropped his eyes to the table. You're an honest guy, aren't you? He nodded. Honesty is kinda my thing. I don't lie and I don't like people who lie to me. Quatre bit his lip. Even a lie of omission? Duo reached over and put his hand over the blond's. Look, you've already told me there's stuff you can't talk about. Therefore it isn't a lie, right? He sighed softly and turned his hand over, curling their fingers together. I can't figure out if meeting you was the worst mistake I ever made or the best thing that ever happened to me. Why? He raised his eyes to meet sincere violet. You scare me, he whispered. Duo frowned. There's no reason to be scared of me. He shook his head. I don't mean I'm afraid you're going to hurt me, not intentionally, at least. But... you make me want things that I can't have. Why can't you have them? They released their hands as their salads were brought. Quatre gulped his water, emotions trying to override his common sense. He picked at his salad, suddenly not as hungry as he had been. So, this lady calls up to the garage the other day, can't get her car to start. Quatre looked up as Duo effectively changed the subject. She said she couldn't imagine what was wrong with it as its battery was relatively new and she'd had it serviced recently. So, I hopped in the tow truck and made my merry way to her home. You know what was wrong with it? Quatre shook his head. What? It wouldn't start because it wasn't in park. She'd rushed in with the groceries and forgot to take it out of drive when she turned it off. (1) Quatre chuckled and took a bite of his salad. And you say being a mechanic isn't interesting. It has its moments. He scrunched his nose. If I can just keep Heero from stealing parts I need, it would be much better. Quatre tilted his head to the side. Stealing parts? He nodded. Actually, the day you and I met, I woke up late, got reamed by my boss, and called all over town to get a part because Heero had pilfered it. Quatre grinned. And then you knocked over a bushel of apples. It really wasn't your day, was it? No, but it had its moments. He leaned over the table as if to impart some great secret. I met this really hot blond. A fine brow raised. Do tell. He's really petite, a health-nut, cares about the environment, and has the most amazing eyes I've ever seen. Quatre blushed softly and wondered exactly how Duo kept causing that. My eyes? I've never seen violet eyes before. Are they contacts? Nope. I'm just a freak of nature. Quatre laughed and listened with a smile as Duo told him stories about his life, everything from the orphanage, to the streets, to the garage. All of it sounded so normal and perfect. He refused to allow the pain of his own circumstances to interfere with the dinner. When they were done, Duo paid the bill and led him out of the restaurant. The brunette glanced at his watch. It's only seven. You don't have to be at work till eight, right? Quatre nodded. But I'll need to get home in time to get ready. I could give you a lift. No, thank you, though. He smiled sweetly. I had a really nice time, Duo. Nice enough to do it again some time? he asked hopefully. Quatre chewed the inside of his lips. It was a really bad idea, but he couldn't seem to help himself. Yeah. Duo took a breath and put his hand to Quatre's cheek. He slowly pulled him forward and blond brows drew together. Duo, I- He was silenced as gentle lips pressed to his own. Tears tried to form in his eyes at the tenderness Duo kissed him with. He'd never been treated like that. He pulled away and ducked his head as he tried to compose himself. He wanted to fall into Duo's arms. He wanted to beg him to take him somewhere far away. He wanted Duo to show him what that man had shown Wufei. He raised his head with a smile. Thank you for the movie and dinner. I'll see you later. Duo watched him walk away, wondering if he'd just completely screwed up. TBC....
