" Custos"

Chapter 16

Trowa woke slowly and stretched his arms over his head. He rolled over and pulled Heero's pillow to his chest, breathing in his scent. Heero almost always left the bed before he did and he didn't really like that. He wished his lover would wait for him, but he knew that wouldn't happen. Heero didn't understand the benefits of lazing around in bed for an extra hour or so.

With a sigh, Trowa pushed up and got dressed. He found Heero in the kitchen with Galen, Aidan, Duo and Zechs. He dropped a kiss to the top of his lover's head before rummaging through the fridge. Nothing really looked appetizing.

“Did you sleep well, lazy cat?”

He frowned slightly as he looked to Heero, but didn't bother responding. He felt... off, not quite himself, and he wasn't quite sure how to describe it. He shut the refrigerator door. “I'm going out for a bit.”

He stepped outside before anyone could ask any questions and stripped off his clothes before shifting. He ran through the forest with no direction or destination in mind. He felt freed in a way. He had been shifting more often in the last month than he ever had and wondered if that wasn't what had him feeling so off kilter. But it had him wondering exactly who he was.

Was he the panther or the man? Which was his true self? A paused as he caught the scent of a deer near by. He tracked it down and pounced, easily overpowering the stag. After eating his fill, he stretched out in a clearing, his jowls on his paws. He'd known what he was for years and it had never bothered him before. So he didn't understand why it was bothering him now.

With a huff, he pushed back to his feet and returned to the house. There was no point dwelling on it. He couldn't change anything. He shifted back and dressed and moved into the kitchen to sit next to Heero, who looked at him worriedly.

“Are you all right?”

“Yeah.” It was a lie plain for all to see, but they let it pass.

They all looked over as Wufei leaned into the kitchen, right arm on the door frame and left held up for some reason unfathomable to the rest. His head was tilted down, eyes closed and a small smile on his lips. If Duo hadn't known better, he would have sworn the Chinese man was drunk. He looked up slowly.

“Quatre,” he announced with a bit of a slur, “is hungry.”

Aidan and Galen laughed softly. Heero's brows drew together as Trowa reached over and gripped his thigh tightly. The shifter had tensed up as soon as the Chinese man had entered the room. “Wufei... you really should have taken a shower before you came down.”

Heero sighed. Trowa had become somewhat immune to the scents of the others as long as it had stayed behind closed doors. But he knew Trowa was nearing his breaking point, as, the fact was, they hadn't been together since Jason's Island, so he knew the shifter was already hard up.

Wufei looked to Trowa, swaying slightly. He pointed a finger at the panther, knowing full well what was going on. “It isn't my fault you aren't getting any.”

Duo howled. “I never thought I'd hear a line like that out of you, Wu.”

He frowned as Quatre reprimanded him for the statement. It wasn't too believable, though, as he was laughing. Aidan smirked as he dished up a plate for the Chinese man to take to his lover. Wufei took it gratefully and stumbled out of the room.

Trowa released a slow breath as he left and Heero closed his eyes. He felt bad, but he wasn't comfortable having sex in the form he was in. In some way, he felt like he was a stranger in his own body. His eyes flew wide as Trowa grabbed his hand and pulled him from the table.

“No, Trowa.”

He didn't answer, just continued pulling him up to their room. Heero ground his teeth as he heard Duo yelling, “Trowa's gonna get some, Trowa's gonna get some!”

Heero grunted when Trowa pushed him to the wall and took his lips in a heated kiss. Heero pushed at his shoulders. “Trowa, I don't think-” He was yanked into the bedroom and the door slammed shut as Trowa pushed him to the bed.

He fell back in surprise. Trowa had always been a passionate and forceful lover, but he'd never been this aggressive. He pushed him away. “Listen to me. I'm not comfortable with this.”

Trowa growled low in his throat. “And you listen to me. It doesn't matter what form you're in, you're still you. You're still the same person I fell in love with years ago. Don't deny me.” He cupped Heero's cheek in one hand and moved the other to his back, teasing the inner part of his wings.

Heero shuddered. “That's playing low.”

Trowa latched his lips to Heero's neck and the faeries eyes rolled back as he found his sensitive areas and attacked them. He continued running his fingers lightly over the base of the wing and moved his other hand down to his nipples. Heero's head fell back and he gave over completely.

Noticing the shift in his lover, Trowa's lips curved up slightly. He sucked harder on the spot and pulled Heero's hips flush to his own.

“Trowa.”

He shoved Heero to the bed and the faerie put his hands to the mattress to keep from falling to his back. Trowa flipped him over and all he could do was hang on to the sheets as he was stripped and prepared. Trowa pulled his hips up and he rested his forehead on his arm, gasping for breath as a third finger entered him. They'd had rough sex before, but this was almost brutal. He glanced over his shoulder.

“Trowa?”

Emerald eyes moved up to meet sapphire. He pulled his fingers out and lubed himself, thrusting in sharply. Heero let out a cry that was half-pain and half-pleasure. Trowa put one hand between his wings and ran his palm up his spine. Heero arched, eyelids fluttering and shivers running through him.

Trowa pounded into him harshly, growling low in his throat as Heero gasped and moaned. Every thrust hit his sweet spot and the hand running over the erogenous zone at the base of his wings had his length hard, dripping pre-cum. Trowa gripped his shoulders and pulled him up.

He threw his head back to the shifter's shoulder as he sat fully in his lap, back pressed to his chest. Trowa held his hips tightly, completely directing the downward thrusts. In the back of his mind, Heero noted that he would probably have bruises by the time this was done.

This was far from making love or even just sex, it was pure animalistic fucking. He gripped his straining erection and stroked it hard and fast, biting his lip to keep his cries to a minimum. His stomach tightened and his world exploded as he fell over the edge. Trowa bit his shoulder as he continued to thrust Heero's hips.

He pushed Heero back to the mattress and Heero clenched his hands in the sheet, trying to breath as the fierce thrusts banged the headboard into the wall and jerked his body out of his control. He looked over his shoulder up into lust glazed emerald eyes. The growls turned to almost silent whimpers until his hips snapped forward one more time, head falling back and a low groan ripping from him as he came.

He pulled out and dropped to the side. After he caught his breath, he looked to Heero and his eyes widened. “Oh shit. Heero, I'm sorry.”

He shook his head and leaned over to drop a quick kiss on Trowa's lips. “Don't be.”

“Heero, I practically raped you.”

He snorted. “Do you honestly think I couldn't have stopped you?”

Trowa kept to himself that the he did. “I completely lost my head.”

Heero smirked. “That's all right, my ass found it.”

“Damn it, Heero, this is serious.” He sat up and turned the light on, jaw dropping as he saw the bruises darkening on Heero's hips.

He sat up at the horrified look on Trowa's face and grabbed his chin, forcing him to meet his eyes. “We've left bruises before. What's different this time?”

Trowa's brows drew together. “Light bruising, yes, but this...”

Heero leaned forward and pressed his lips to Trowa's to shut him up. When the shifter finally relaxed, he pulled away. “No bleeding. No pain. Just rough and great sex. All right?”

They stared at each other for several long minutes before Trowa looked away. “I'm going to take a shower.”

He slid from the bed and grabbed a change of clothes before disappearing into the bathroom. He dropped his clothes on the toilet lid and rested his hands on the counter around the sink. He closed his eyes and clenched his teeth. Fire still roared through his veins. Once Wufei's aroused scent had filled the room, he'd been instantly and impossibly turned on. Like some kind of animal in heat.

He looked up to his reflection. It almost felt as if the panther's instincts were taking over his own and he was becoming some kind of beast. He clenched his hands tighter on the granite counter top and froze. He looked down to see fresh cracks in the stone. He backed away and turned the shower on.

This wasn't normal, no matter how he looked at it. Not that he knew what 'normal' for shifters was. He climbed into the shower and let the cool water cascade over his heated skin. He'd always had a high body temperature despite his slight build, but it seemed to be rising of late. He tilted his head back, washing his face with the cool rush of water.

There was no doubt in his mind. He was changing. But he didn't know why or what had instigated it. All he knew was that it bothered him greatly.

He washed quickly and redressed. He left the bathroom and paused outside of his and Heero's bedroom. “Heero?”

“Hm?”

“I'm going downstairs. I don't think I could handle the smell in there right now. Okay?”

He heard Heero's sigh, but it was followed by a soft, “Okay.”

Trowa moved down to the living room to find Galen, Aidan, Duo, and Zechs watching the news. Duo looked up to him with a smirk, but Trowa didn't feel like playing and he sat heavily in the recliner.

Duo's brows drew together. “Trowa?”

The shifter glanced over and he continued. “I don't know why you're upset, but... we all have to accept who we are, right? If it's how you're intended to be, it can't be wrong. I was scared of that, but,” he licked his lips, “you're stronger than me, emotionally, I mean.”

He shook his head. “I don't know why I'm sayin' this, but... you are who you are, and that's what I... we need.”

Trowa stared at the brunette silently for several minutes. “Damn, Duo, did you drink a psychic potion?”

He laughed softly. “No, I just got a good dose of reality.” He sobered and met emerald eyes. “Trowa, you an essential part of this. I need all of you to help me. And I can't defeat Merrick without you. Whatever it takes for you to reach the utmost of your abilities, you have to reach it.”

Quatre rolled over and curled back to Wufei's side. He wasn't sure how long he'd been lying in bed. He'd gotten up a few times to use the bathroom, but otherwise he and Wufei had remained naked and in bed.

The high they'd been riding on wasn't exactly fading, but he was coming to the point where he could think rationally despite the coursing link between them. He moved to stretch his body over his lover's and arms wove around his waist as they kissed.

'I love you.' It wasn't really necessary to say as Wufei could feel it, but that didn't stop him from wanting to say it.

'Love you, too.'

Quatre sighed and laid his cheek to the pillow. 'I wish we could stay like this forever.'

Wufei smiled, moving his hand up to run his fingers through soft golden locks. 'I know.'

They laid in silence, simply enjoying the other's company. Wufei's vision shifted and Quatre gasped softly as they were presented to a large room with no windows. It was filled with vampires, all facing one who stood on a platform in a corner. He had spiky black hair and dark brown eyes.

“They are not pleased,” he said with a scowl. “There are half our numbers in New York and they brought twice the amount to the ancients. How is three hundred only managed to retrieve fifty-six humans?”

The room remained silent and he sneered. “All those who brought cattle step forward.” Twenty some odd vampires moved to the front of the crowd. He nodded. “Step out of the room.”

They filed out and he looked to the rest. “You will wait here for further instructions.” He left and locked the door, turning to the guard. “Open the ceiling at sunrise.”

She nodded and he turned to the others. “Celebrate tonight. Tomorrow night we will redeem ourselves.”

The vision faded and Quatre released a breath. “I guess the honeymoon's over.”

“Yeah.”

Quatre dragged himself from the bed, legs a little shaky. He grabbed some clothes and took a quick shower. Wufei waited until he returned to get up and take his own shower. They moved downstairs to find the others in the living room. Duo and Aidan were playing a game of chess while Galen, Zechs and Trowa watched TV.

“Finally come up for air?”

Quatre shook his head. “Where is Heero?”

“In the kitchen getting something to eat.”

“Turn on the news.”

Galen frowned slightly but flipped over to the local channel for the ten o'clock news. Breaking news was flashing in the top left corner of the screen as the anchor read from a report. “They were not acquainted, but all of them were downtown in various clubs and bars. And none have been seen since.

“We're asking that if you have any information-”

Galen frowned and swapped to a national news channel as the others looked to Quatre and Wufei. “What's going on?”

Galen watched the ticker at the bottom of the screen as the anchor talked about some senator doing things with an intern he had no business doing. Twenty minutes later, the story abruptly changed.

“This just in, mass abductions have occurred in three cities across the country, New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville. So far, the report is that over three hundred men and woman disappeared without a trace. There were no witnesses, even though many of them were in public places. Authorities are at a loss and ask if anyone has any information to please report to your local authorities.”

Galen muted the TV and looked up to Quatre. “I take it you two saw this.”

The blond nodded. “The grand total here is fifty-six. They're celebrating tonight, but they plan to try again tomorrow. The one in charge has black hair and dark eyes.” He cleared his throat. “He killed almost all the vampires because they failed to take more humans than the others did. Now there are somewhere between twenty and thirty.”

They looked to Duo who was leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, thumbs hooked under his chin and laced fingers pressed to his lips. His eyes were narrowed and teeth tightly clenched. He stood and looked to Wufei. “You can find them, right?”

He smirked softly. “Funny, I've used that ability to run from them. This will be the first time I use it to find them.”

Decision made, they gathered up weapons and left for the city. They moved through back streets and alleys, waiting for Wufei to get a sense of them. After almost thirty minutes, Wufei paused. He doubled back and took a right, landing them into a neighborhood, and stopped before a large gated house.

“They're in there.”

“All of them?”

He shook his head. “I don't know for sure, but there are a lot.”

Trowa sniffed the air. “Humans are in there, too.”

The six climbed a tree and jumped silently to the roof. They crept in through a window to the attic. Once inside, they could hear a woman screaming in fear and pain. Duo raced down the steps where they came to a large balcony that overlooked what appeared to be a ballroom. A naked woman lay chained to the floor, arms and legs spread wide as several vampires fed off her at once.

Wufei's eyes narrowed. 'Sadists. They're intentionally hurting her.'

Quatre cringed slightly, remembering the pain he'd felt when Wufei had fed off him without biting. It was highly unpleasant. His lover squeezed his hand and gave him an apologetic look. 'It wasn't your fault.'

Duo jumped up to the banister, teeth grinding with his fury. Wufei's eyes widened as he jumped to the floor, landing in the middle of the enemy. Galen sighed. “He's just like his predecessor.”

Duo landed, dropping to one knee to absorb the impact. Silence fell over the room as they gaped at the newcomer. Duo took deep breaths, desire for blood warring with his need for revenge. He raised to his feet and glared down at the three vampires. In moves quicker than even the vampires could follow, he put a stake through the hearts of the three feeding off the woman.

The room quickly burst into chaos and the five still on the balcony jumped into the fray. Duo and Wufei covered Quatre as he knelt beside the woman. She gasped for breath as she looked up to him.

“P-please... help m-me... please...” She trailed off, her quick panting breaths stilling as she died.

He closed his eyes. “I'm sorry.”

Wufei ground his teeth as he felt the sadness rolling off his lover. 'Not now, Quatre. Mourn later.' A roundhouse kick sent one of the vampires flying while he shot a crossbow bolt into another's chest. He spun, pulling a stake free and slamming it into the heart of the third as he reached him.

In the time it took Wufei to take out three, Duo had already dispatched five, on top of the three he'd already killed. An unholy light filled his violet eyes as he tore through the vampires, literally ripping off limbs as he went. Duo slammed one of the vampires into the wall, a sick grin rising to his lips.

“You smell particularly appetizing.”

His eyes widened. “What?”

Duo pulled out a stake, holding him with one hand, while he turned and sliced the neck of the man sneaking up on him. He tilted his head to the side as he gazed down at the fallen mate. “Too bad you chose the wrong bloodsucker to fuck.” He looked back to the vampire. “I just ate a few days ago, but a top off wouldn't hurt.”

The few remaining vampires in the room froze. “What the hell is he?”

“The Custos,” a terrified voice whispered.

Quatre spun and looked at the black haired man from the vision. “Wufei!”

The leader saw Wufei running toward him and he turned to run. Wufei gave chase, trusting the others to protect Quatre. He slid down the hall and barely caught up to the man before he slipped outside. The vampire turned and swung at Wufei. He easily ducked and sent a punch to his gut.

He grunted and lifted his knee to Wufei's stomach. He doubled over slightly and came back up with a vile that he slammed into the vampires mouth just before sending an uppercut to his jaw. He bit down and his eyes widened as silver poured down his throat. He choked, dropping to the floor.

Wufei grabbed him by the ankle and dragged him back to the ballroom where Trowa was finishing up the last of them. He flipped over the vampire, spun and jabbed a stake into the night walker's back.

Quatre quirked an eyebrow at how he was carrying the vampire and he just shrugged, throwing him several feet in front of him.

Duo knelt down to examine him. “What'd you do?”

“Silver.”

Galen's eyes widened. “You'll do whatever it takes, won't you? You ever had silver poisoning?”

He nodded. “Yes. That's how I know it's very effective in slowing someone down.”

“We should get back to the estate.”

Quatre looked to the woman's body. “Shouldn't we do something with her?”

Wufei shook his head. “We have to burn the place down.”

“What? Why?”

He sighed. “Quatre, the last thing we need is the police finding them. Can you imagine the panic it would cause when they carried the bodies out into daylight and they burned to ash? It's best that the public doesn't know we exist. I'm sorry.”

He nodded his understanding and cast one last look at her before they left. Wufei threw the vampire over his shoulder and carried him from the estate. Aidan and Galen left a few moments later after setting the fire.

Zechs and Heero met them at the door, both worried about their lovers. There really hadn't been too much need for Zechs to worry, but Duo didn't mind the attention.

They chained the vampire tightly and left him on the basement floor. “It'll be a few hours before he's back in a frame of mind to talk.”

Galen looked to him. “When did you get silver poisoning?”

“About two years back. I was attacked in my sleep. Fortunately, there was only one and I slept with a stake. I managed to kill him at the same time he got the silver in me.”

Duo stared down at the writhing vampire. “What does it feel like?”

“Much like it would feel if acid was poured down your throat, I imagine.”

He cringed. “That sounds... pleasant.”

Wufei snorted and looked to him. “Just what were you thinking, jumping down in the middle of them like that?”

He looked away. “I wasn't thinking. I was pissed.”

Zechs glared at Duo. “You jumped into the middle of the enemy?”

He grimaced. “They were torturing some poor woman.”

Quatre dropped his chin to his chest and they all felt the acute pain from not making it in time to save her. Wufei pulled Quatre to his chest. 'We did all we could.'

He nodded, clenching his fist. 'We just have to make sure stuff like this comes to an end.'

They waited for the vampire to recover from the silver and surrounded him, but his hate filled eyes remained locked on Wufei. Duo knelt in front of him and grabbed his chin, yanking his face so he could look into his eyes.

“Seems you're up shit creek without a paddle, pal. What's your name?”

“I'm not telling you anything?”

“Oh? I may not give you a choice.” He stared hard at the vampire for several seconds, but he only smirked.

“That won't work on me.”

Duo nodded slowly. “Apparently not.” He sighed. “All right, here's the deal, you give us information, I consider letting you live. You don't, you'll definitely die. Simple as that. I already know the ancients' names. I want you to tell me where they are.”

He clenched his teeth and Duo shook his head. His hand shot out and gripped the vampire by his jugular, squeezing hard. “Don't fuck with me, asshole. I can cause you a lot of discomfort before you die.”

“I'm not some child to be cowed by threats.”

Duo leaned forward and dragged his canines along the vampire's neck, pulling a pain-filled scream from him. He leaned back, studying the jagged lines before looking into dark eyes. “Where are they?”

He struggled for breath as his neck burned. “Canada.”

Violet eyes narrowed. “You're lying.”

He leaned forward and the vampire jerked away. “I don't know where Antony and Merrick are!”

He paused. “Miranda?”

“Cincinnati,” he cried. “Please, make it stop!”

Duo tilted his head to the side. “All right, how would you like to die?”

He gaped. “But, you said you'd let me live if I told you!”

“I said I'd consider it. But you lied. And, on top of that,” his face darkened, “how many humans have you tortured to death? How many screams have you dragged from people for the sadistic pleasure? In this world, I am the law, and you're well passed guilty.”

He stared at Duo, fear stilling his tongue. The braided man shook his head. “A stake would be too good for you.” He clamped his lips to the wound and drew deeply, sucking until there was nothing left. He pulled away and dropped the dead vampire to the floor. He stood slowly and gazed down at the corpse.

“You tasted like shit.”

Zechs raised his hand tentatively and put it to his lover's shoulder. Something about the... execution had unnerved him. “Duo?”

He glanced to the side. “Yeah?”

“Are you all right?”

He frowned. “Why wouldn't I be?”

“It's just,” he licked his lips, “you really seemed to enjoy killing him.”

He shook his head. “No, I enjoyed getting revenge for the people he slaughtered. It doesn't change anything, but he won't hurt anyone else.” His brows drew together. “Zechs, you're... I did what I had to, didn't I?”

The blond folded him in his arms. “Yeah. I just misunderstood your reasons. You did everything right.”
