" Custos"

Chapter 11

“My lord, we know where they are.”

Merrick turned. “Which is?”

He licked his lips. “Jason's island.”

His lips peeled back in a sneer and black eyes flashed with cold anger. He snatched his hand out and held his underling a foot off the ground by his neck. “He's allied with the faerie already?”

He struggled to speak. “And the panther. We're not sure of the others.”

He threw the man to the side, causing a loud crash as he hit the wall and the cement cracked. He stalked toward the weaker vampire and lifted him from the floor by his hair until their faces were inches apart. “You've failed me for the last time, Landon.”

“Sire, please, all we need to do is wait for them to leave the island. We can set up and overwhelm them.”

He snarled. “It was your job to stop him before he managed to make any alliances. Do you have any idea the hell we're in for if he revives the Custos?”

“It would take so many elements to fall into place for that to happen it's nearly impossible.”

He clenched his hand tighter around Landon's throat. “Chang is known for accomplishing the near impossible.” He pulled his other hand back and slammed it into Landon's chest, ripping his heart out.

Landon fell to the floor and could do nothing but gasp and watch as Merrick carried his heart to the table. The ancient set it down and broke an edge off the corner of the table. He turned to look at him.

“I warned you, Landon.” He stabbed the wood into the heart and Landon's back arched before he slumped to the side.

He turned on his heel and left the room. Servants quickly ducked out of the way of his anger as he stormed down to the basement. He threw the heavy oak doors open and moved into the dimly lit room. A large bed lay in its center, two naked forms laying in the center of the silken sheets. One was chained to the headboard, the other lay unconscious beside him.

Pale green eyes slit open and the chains rattled. “Let us go.”

He moved to the side of the bed and gripped the delicate chin. “It must be so painful to fight as you do. I would unchain you if you would serve me willingly.”

He jerked his chin from Merrick's grip. “I will never serve you willingly.”

“There are other Seers I could use, you know.”

“Then use them.”

Merrick shook his head. The fact was, he had no other Seer as powerful as Galen and, unfortunately, Charms didn't work on Seers. In order to bring the vampire under control, he'd had to use his mate against him.

“Chang has reached Jason's island.”

Full lips raised in the corners. “Good for him.”

A hand shot out and jerked his mate's head up by his hair. A pain-filled gasp fell from his lips and whimpers filled the room. Galen struggled against the chains. “Leave him alone.”

Dark eyes slit open. “'S all right,” he slurred.

Merrick shoved the trembling mate on top of his lover. “How far has Chang gone?”

The mate's back arched as Merrick activated the spell he held over him. Galen's eyes clenched shut as the vision was forcibly invoked.

Tears slipped from dark eyes as his lips moved against his will. “He is mated and has the faerie and panther, neither know their roles yet.”

“And the Custos?”

He shook sweat dampened hair. “Not yet.”

Merrick sighed in relief and left the room. He slumped to Galen's chest with an agonized groan. “Thank God he didn't ask the right question,” he whispered softly.

He kissed the top of his head. “Don't fight it, love. Go back to sleep so you aren't hurting anymore.”

Tears slipped down his cheeks. “I'm sorry I got us into this mess.”

Heero popped a carrot into his mouth and turned to glance through the window between the kitchen and living room. “He seems to be doing well.”

Wufei followed his gaze and nodded. It was true, Duo seemed back to his normal state. After realizing he was more than content to feed off of animals, he'd lost the fear he had. And his relationship with Zechs had become much closer. They hadn't mated that Wufei could tell, but they were definitely connected in some way.

“Yes. I think he's doing very well.”

Duo glanced over as if he sensed them talking about him and smirked. “Hey, Tinker bell, the humans in here are hungry. Quatre says to share the food.”

Heero ground his teeth. “I swear I'll rip his tongue out.”

Wufei snorted. “It'd just grow back.” He studied Heero a moment. “I'm curious, though.”

He quirked an eyebrow. “About what?”

“Your natural form. Obviously this,” he waved his hand, “is not it.”

He shrugged, leaning his hip to the counter. “The hunters didn't just focus on those who posed a threat to humans. Their intent was to kill off all Mystical creatures. In an effort to save us, my ancestors came up with a spell that is cast at birth that hides our true form. We don't age like humans and maintain most of our power, but we can pass as them easily enough.”

“Can you break the spell?” Zechs asked.

He nodded slowly. “If need be, but it isn't pleasant bouncing back from one form to the other and it also leaves us vulnerable to the humans.”

Wufei frowned. “But aren't faeries strong enough to repel human attacks?”

“It's against our laws,” Jason said softly. “Under no circumstances are we to use our power against humans... well, unless they bear a power. Like being mated to a vampire.”

Duo crossed to the window between the two rooms and laid his forearms on the sill. “Can y'all do more than heal people?”

Jason smiled. “Oh yes, much more.”

“Like what?”

He shrugged. “Like all races, it depends. Everyone has their own unique talents. My-” he cut off as Wufei doubled over. “Are you all right?”

Quatre ran to him and pulled him into his arms, both slipping to their knees on the floor. Cerulean eyes glazed. “He knows where we are,” he whispered.

“Who?” Jason asked.

“Merrick.”

Heero frowned. “Who is Merrick?”

“The oldest of the vampires. He's sending an army.”

“Can we escape?”

Blond brows drew together. “Narrowly. The Custos must not be given over.”

Trowa frowned. “Who has the Custos?”

He shook his head slowly. “No one... yet. The Custos has yet to revive.”

Heero knelt beside Quatre and Wufei. “How do we revive him?”

“It has already begun,” he murmured, eyes gazing blankly at the floor. “The pact has been made.”

Heero took a breath. “Who is the Custos?”

“He must name himself, not in words but blood, and the seal will be upon him.” Blue eyes fluttered and Quatre shuddered. He closed his eyes and caught his breath, feeling as if he'd just run a marathon.

Heero put a hand to either of their shoulders. “Are you all right?”

Quatre pulled away and looked to him. “Fine. But we need to leave soon.”

Duo frowned. “But it'll be daylight soon.”

He nodded. “Exactly. We need to leave while it's light outside. We need as much light as we can possibly get.” He stood and held his hand out for Wufei.

Duo worried his bottom lip with his teeth and fiddled with the sleeves of this shirt that draped almost to his fingers. “Are you sure that's a good idea?”

“We have to, Duo.”

“You'll go with them?”

Heero looked to his grandfather, jaw set. “You have to ask?”

Jason's brows drew together and he pulled Heero to his chest, not bothered by the fact the hug wasn't returned. He could feel the tension mounting in Heero's body. “It's going to be okay, my boy.”

Heero nodded and looked to the others. “Get everything ready. We'll leave in about an hour.” He looked to Trowa. “Come with me.”

He led his lover up to their bedroom and shut the door silently behind him, leaning against it. Trowa tilted his head to the side. “What's wrong?”

He studied Trowa for a long moment before pushing from the door and burrowing his face in his lover's neck, wrapping his arms around his waist. “Something is going to happen, Trowa. And it makes self-destructing seem like a walk in the park.”

Trowa's brows drew together with worry. He'd never felt Heero shake like that before. Heero wasn't the type to allow fear to infiltrate his thoughts. “What?”

He shook his head. “I can't go into it. Just...” He raised his head and kissed Trowa. “I don't know when it will happen, but when it does, you'll know. And you have to promise that you won't interfere.”

“Heero, if you're being hurt I-”

“No.” He looked steady into Trowa's eyes. “I'll live through it... I think. If you get in the middle, there is no 'think', you will die. Do you understand?”

No, he didn't. “Heero, what's going to happen?”

“I can't tell you. I just need you to trust me.” He kissed Trowa hotly. “Please,” he whispered against his lips. “I need to know that you're safe.”

Trowa pulled back and gazed with worry into sapphire eyes. “You're scaring me, Heero.”

He closed his eyes briefly. “No matter what happens... I love you. We're going into the heart of the fire this time, Trowa. This war isn't like the one for the colonies. Souls are at stake here, not just lives.” Heero had never felt panic before... it was an emotion he quickly came to despise. “Don't let me be lost,” he whispered.

Trowa didn't understand, but he knew Heero needed reassurance. And, if that was all he could give, he would. He crushed his lips to his lover's.

Heero gave over easily, allowing Trowa complete control. He thrust against the shifter as hands gripped his behind and pulled him flush to the lithe body before him. His breaths came in disjointed pants as he was stripped and laid to the bed. He quickly rolled to his stomach, knowing it was Trowa's favorite position, but the shifter turned him to his back and gazed down at him with intense emerald eyes.

“That's the first time.” He nuzzled Heero's neck. “I knew it, but that's the first time you've ever said you loved me.”

Heero sighed as Trowa lapped at his collar bone, long tapered fingers running soothing circles across his stomach and sides. Trowa moved down his body slowly, eliciting a sharp gasp as he took a nipple between his teeth and held it as he rolled his tongue over it. Heero's back arched slightly and his eyes slipped closed.

“Trowa.”

“Just lay back and relax.” He reached for the nightstand and grabbed the lube, setting it lower on the bed by Heero's hip. He pressed his lips to Heero's in an undemanding but heated kiss and slipped his tongue between them as they parted for him. There wasn't the usual battle for control as Heero gave way to him, taking whatever he was given.

Trowa pulled away from the sweet mouth and moved downward, eyes focused on the flushed face of his lover. He separated Heero's legs and knelt between them, teasing the soft skin of his inner thighs. A soft moan escaped kiss-swollen lips and Heero's hips bucked, a silent request for something more than the light caresses. Trowa chuckled and darkened sapphire eyes slit open.

He leaned down, making sure they maintained eye contact, and flicked his tongue out to lap at the tip of Heero's erection. He jerked softly and Trowa gripped the base of his length. He swirled his tongue around it and then blew gently, pulling another gasp from Heero.

“Stop teasing.”

He smiled. He would have loved more than anything to drag it out, but they didn't really have the time. He wrapped his lips around Heero's length and slid down, adding suction sporadically as he wrapped his tongue around the thick erection in his mouth. He grabbed the lube and coated his fingers. He raised up until on the tip was between his lips. As he lowered back down, he pushed one finger into his lover.

Heero spread his legs further and moaned heavily. Another finger was added and they brushed against his prostate. He pulled his knees up, planting his feet on the mattress. Trowa added a third finger and relaxed his throat, taking him all the way in and swallowing around the hard length.

Trowa mercilessly attacked the bundle of nerves at his fingertips, relishing the gasps and moans released from his lover. He glanced up to watch Heero's head toss to the side as he whispered Trowa's name, fists clenching in his own hair. He moved his free hand to cup the heavy sac beneath the length he was ravishing.

Heero could hardly think as he was assaulted inside and out. Jolts of pleasure hummed through him so hotly he was sure he was going to die from sensation. His back arched and a choked groan escaped him as he climaxed into the waiting mouth. He sagged back to the bed and fought to regain his breathing as Trowa cleaned him up.

“What about you?” he asked when his breathing was back to normal.

Trowa smiled and kissed the corner of his mouth. “I took care of that.” He winked and tossed some clothes to Heero. “Get dressed. We need to hurry.”

Heero nodded and sat up, pulling the t-shirt over his head and sliding to the floor to pull up his jeans. He glanced to Trowa briefly as he packed his things. It wasn't like him. He didn't back down or second guess what he knew he needed to do. He didn't panic. He wasn't needy. He shook his head and sighed.

Trowa put a hand on his shoulder. “We all have our moments, Heero.”

He nodded. “You ready?”

“Yeah.”

They met the others at the jet. Jason pulled Heero into a tight embrace, whispering for him to return safely, and stepped back. Trowa pulled the heavy door closed.

“Where to?”

“Africa.” Wufei frowned, not exactly sure why he'd chosen that location, but he'd learned that gut instincts were not something to be ignored. He shrugged and glanced to Duo. “There are some nice large predators there.”

Trowa nodded and he and Heero disappeared into the cockpit.

Duo scratched the back of his neck and a slow grin spread on his face. “Maybe I could take down a lion with my bare hands. That'd be kinda cool.”

Zechs shook his head, a fond smile on his face. He looked to Wufei. “When are you going to start training him?”

He leaned his elbows on his knees. “That term is something of a misconception. I'm not going to be taking him into a field and running forms with him or anything. I just have leeway over him until he can control himself.”

“What exactly does that mean?”

He smirked. “Duo, stand up.”

Instantly, the braided man was on his feet, a chagrined expression on his face. “Fei, you said you wouldn't-”

“Sit down.”

He sat, lips pressed to a fine line. “Bastard.”

He shrugged and looked back to Zechs. “That's why I wasn't worried about him seeing you when he woke up. Even if he'd fallen into blood lust, he'd have responded to my voice.” His eyes narrowed as they fell to where Zechs was rubbing his wrists through his long sleeves. It suddenly struck Wufei as odd.

“It's in the nineties. Why are you wearing long sleeves?”

Both Zechs and Duo tensed and the blond quit fidgeting. Quatre looked from one to the other and noticed Duo also wore long sleeves. “What's going on?”

They exchanged glances before Zechs held out his arms and pulled the sleeves up one at a time. Quatre moved to kneel in front of him and took his hand, studying the bands that wound his wrist. There were three dark red lines weaving through each other. He flipped Zechs' hand over. The lines spread to form an intricate knot over the gathering of veins on the inside of his wrist. He looked to Duo who held up his wrists to show the same markings.

“When did they appear?”

Duo raised a shoulder. “Um... they showed up after the first time we were together.”

Wufei frowned. “Did anything strange happen?”

“I'm not talking about my sex life.”

He looked to Duo. “Don't make me force an answer. You should have told us about this.”

Zechs' brows drew together as he thought over the encounter. “There was something. He was speaking in another language near the end.”

Onyx and cerulean eyes gazed at Duo as if he were some animal on display. He squirmed slightly. “I don't remember that part.”

Wufei looked back to Zechs. “Do you remember any of what he said?”

He nodded slowly. “A few of the words. Regius cruor... voveo protego. Something like that.”

Wufei moved to the table and set up his laptop. “Keep thinking. I'll see what I can find.”

Duo chewed his lip. He knew he should have told Wufei, but he'd been too nervous about what the marks may have meant. He'd hoped they'd go away. Wasn't being a vampire weird enough?

Zechs gripped his hand, pulling him from his thoughts. “It's going to be all right.”

He grunted. “Or I have some weird vampire disease and gave it to you.”

Pale blue eyes narrowed. “You do not. I don't think vampires have diseases.”

Quatre looked over Wufei's shoulder as he typed the words into a translation program. “Latin,” he murmured softly. “I bet that's no coincidence.”

“Hm. Royal blood,” Wufei whispered. “Vow to protect.”

“Wufei-”

'I know,' he cut him off mentally. They glanced to the other pair. “Anything else?”

The blond raked a hand through his hair. “Lamia... and... pactum.” He shook his head. “That's all I can remember.”

Wufei typed those in and Quatre gripped his shoulder tightly. 'Has to be.'

“Duo, do you have any other markings?”

“No.”

'What does that mean?'

Wufei sat back in his chair and pulled Quatre to sit in his lap as he stared at the screen. 'If we put the pieces together, it says something about a vampire forming a pact to protect one of royal blood.'

Quatre tapped his fingers to his lips. 'So, the pact was just formed. Perhaps there's more he has to do to formalize it.'

Wufei nodded slowly. 'You do realize he's going to hate me when he realizes the truth.'

He shook his head. 'I think by that point he'll be more accepting.'

They both looked to Duo who was distracted at the moment with Zechs running his hand through his hair. His eyes were closed and random shivers shook him on occasion, accompanied with soft mewls of appreciation. Wufei snorted.

'He looks more like a kitten than a warrior.'

Quatre chuckled. 'You and I both know he was strong even before you turned him.'

Wufei nuzzled his neck with his nose. 'I wonder what the final step is.'

'We'll have to wait with everyone else to find that out, I'm afraid.' He sighed. 'I just wish we could tell him. Give him some sort of warning.'

They fell silent, both contemplating the new information. 'Well, at least now we don't have to worry about hunting the Custos down. We already have him.'
