SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:

Epilogue1: NEW BEGINNINGS

Heero walked into the gray stucco house he and Duo had bought in Los Angeles.

After some deliberation, they had decided to buy the house and had not regretted it once. Heero had been fine with living in San Francisco, one of the two places they had settled on, but Duo had said that it would be better if they lived in L.A. That puzzled him but he shrugged it off and consented, the two of them buying the suburban house in a good neighborhood in Orange County. They loved it. Duo had even carried him over the threshold when they moved in. Heero knew he had meant it as a tender gesture more than a joke despite his poking fun at it later. It was a tradition of devotion and undying love and Heero took it as such.

As soon as they had moved in, Duo had gone to work building an underground shelter beneath the house. It was finished now, had taken him two weeks to complete with Heero’s help and now should an emergency arise and something happen during the day, Duo had a place to retreat from sunlight.

He had told Duo about Relena and his landlord, and Duo had told him of Wufei, the attack on Martha. They had discussed in full the fight they had had and Heero had nearly drowned in the waves of guilt when Duo told him of the kill, the thing that had broken them apart for a short while, seeming to relive it as he spoke each word. They both agreed that Duo would never repeat his actions, for it was not his duty to make targets pay for what they had done, but to ensure they would never do it again, and to continue doing what he had would make him no better than a mark. He had sworn to never let himself loose control like that again, so long as he lived, for it had frightened him as well. The immensity of what Heero had said without knowing the full story hit him and as he cried, Duo held him, murmuring things of forgiveness and "of the past".

It was now a few weeks from Christmas, and Heero had learned that of all the holidays Duo hated_ESPECIALLY Halloween_Christmas was not one of them. The two had gone out and bought a tree which Duo and he had spent six hours decorating and Duo STILL didn’t think it was perfect enough, constantly changing things upon the bows. They had both decorated the house in lights, even stringing lights into the two small trees and few bushes in the front yard. Heero thought that, though it was beautiful and Duo had a knack for artistic things like that, it was unnecessary for EVERY house in their neighborhood had been decorated with lights or Nativity scenes or Santa’s and so on.

Oh, but he did love the way Duo had arranged the strands of multi colored lights. Especially the two trees.

One had been done in deep blue lights, the other in bright violet.

When Duo had gone hunting that night, Heero had gone to the store and bought some stuff like tea and coffee, but had also bought some Christmas gifts. He went into the kitchen with the last few things he had bought. Among them, clothes. ‘Jeez. You’d think either of us would have had the presence of mind to bring clothes with us. Oh well, we can afford it.’ He set the bags on the counter by the heater and walked into the living room when he heard his laptop give an alert that he had a new message.

He sat down in front of the desk and looked it over. He grinned when he saw who it was from. ‘Doug. He’s probably wondering where I am.’ He felt remorseful suddenly. ‘I should have told him I was leaving. The poor guy’s probably shitting a brick.’ Opening the file, he read what his friend sent him.

//Hey! (knock knock) Where the hell are you, man? I dropped by your place but it was cleared out. I talked to the guy there and he said you moved. Thanks for telling me, you self-centered bastard!

So where are you? Did you fall off the edge of the world or something? I hate it when that happens. Maxwell is gone, too. Did you guys go somewhere together?

Write me back or if I ever find you, my fist is gonna be the last thing you ever see.

Your buddy.

Doug.//

Heero grinned at that. ‘I should write back. Tell him what’s up.’ He began to type up a short letter to his friend.

Duo walked leisurely along the sidewalk of the neighborhood, gazing at the stars and brilliant lights that adorned each house. ‘Wow. I miss the country, but there is something to be said about city life. These lights for one.’ He smiled to himself as he gazed at all the Christmas lights on the houses of his neighborhood. ‘Hunting for another. I haven’t run into a target that was not absolutely evil in a long time. They’re all so horrible here. …Which is a good thing, considering what I’m about to do.’

Rather than hunting, as he had told Heero he was going to do, he had merely walked around the neighborhood a few times after he had bought a pair of rings at a respectable jewelry store, deeply contemplative.

Stopping before the house he shared with Heero, Duo merely gazed at it for long moments. ‘I can do this.’ He thought with determination, fingering the rings in his hand before his hands balled into fists at his sides. They were simple silver. But on the inside of each, was carved a single word. ‘I can do it.’

He walked up the shallow steps on the path that led to the door.

Heero looked over the letter he had written, reading it to himself as he turned on a CD write on his computer.

//Hi, Doug.

Sorry I haven’t seen you. Or called. Or written.

Yes, I did move. So did Duo. We’re both living in L.A. now. Attached is a picture of our house. I got evicted from my place and Duo did too. It’s a long story. One that was devastating but came out well. The fight we had… It was silly. Both of us thought the other hated us when we both still loved each other.

But things are good now. It’s over and it ended well.

Thank you for being there when I needed you. You’re my best friend.

I’ll keep in touch.

Heero.//

"Honey, I’m home!" Duo called from the other room and Heero smiled at the bad joke.

He sent the message and smiled to Duo when he walked into the room. "Koban wa."

Duo smiled brightly. "Ah." His smile faltered a bit and Heero noticed that he was fidgeting a little.

He reached out and sensed well-covered waves of nervousness from his lover. "Duo? Doshda?"

Duo looked about the room for a moment before smiling sincerely, his eyes turning to the computer. "That’s a good song." He said as he walked forward to the laptop and Heero. "But this one is better." He selected one that Heero knew very well.

You got a pretty smile.

It covers up the poisons that you hide.

You walk around in circles in my head.

Waiting for the chance to break me.

Chance to take me

Down.

Duo turned wide, amethyst eyes to Heero's own sapphire ones. "Hee-kun... I..." He looked like he was trying to think of the right words but they seemed to be escaping him.

Heero smiled. "What is it?"

Now I see.

The burden you gave.

It's too much to carry,

Too much to bury

Inside.

Sighing, Duo gave up on words and knelt in front of where Heero was sitting.

Heero's eyes widened and his breath caught in his throat as he saw Duo hold a ring to him.

I guess you're the only one.

That nobody changes.

I guess you're the only one left standing

When everything else goes down.

You're still the only one.

Yeah, you're still the only one.

"Heero." Duo said softly as he held the ring out to him.

It was of simple design, a plain silver band. But it implied and swore and promised so very much.

So indeed it was not simple at all. Looks were deceiving.

"Heero." Duo said again, still searching for the words. "I love you. I will forever. Will you...?"

"Yes!" Heero nodded and slid from the chair to kneel on the floor with his beloved. "Yes." He knew there was more he could say, but it seemed Duo was not the only one words had deserted that night.

It's all so shallow, and all so appealing now

I'm up to my ankles and I'm drowning anyway

In a sea of sarcastic faces, familiar places.

Everything looks quite the same here.

It's all confusingly amusing.

Bitter and tainted,

The picture you painted

To me.

Pulling back, Duo smiled and took his hand, gently slipping the ring onto his finger.

It looked as though something was carved into the inside of the band, but Heero was so caught up in the moment that he paid it little heed. He felt tears form in his eyes as he looked down to their hands.

Duo was already wearing a matching band.

Heero leaned forward and kissed him deeply, encircling his arms about his lover, holding him tightly.

Duo lifted him and carried him to the bed, setting him down and the two quickly divested Heero of his clothes before doing the same for Duo.

Rather than going any further, however, Duo merely held Heero to himself tightly and Heero felt his frame shaking lightly.

"Duo?" Heero rubbed his back. "Duo-kun? What's wrong?"

I guess you're the only one

That nobody changes.

I guess you're the only one left standing

When everything else goes down.

"Nothing, Hee-kun." Duo assured. He laid back, drawing Heero with him, and traced every line on his body with infinite care, memorizing each one.

Heero squirmed a little when Duo's fingers ran over his abdomen, forcing a giggle from him and Duo smiled, giving his side a poke that made him squirm more. "Duo." He whined.

Duo smiled and silenced him with a kiss as his hand found Heero's arousal and stroked it slowly, making Heero moan.

Heero's hand went immediately to Duo's braid and undid the band, letting the plait loosen to nothing as his fingers combed through the silken strands.

You're still the only one

Who will never change faces.

I guess you're the only one left standing

When everything else goes down.

Duo retreated then and walked into the bathroom. "I'll be right back."

Heero nodded and scooted further up the large bed, waiting for his lover to return.

Just cause it's all in your head

Doesn't mean it has to be in mine.

Don't believe what you said.

Still can't get it out of my mind.

After a short moment, Duo sauntered out of the bathroom to the bed and crawled over Heero with a seductive smile, straddling his hips.

Heero moaned as Duo began to lower himself, having been prepared. 'Oh. So THAT'S what you were doing.'

Duo chuckled slightly. ‘"Ah"’. Clasping his hands tightly with Heero's, he set a slow pace, his hair falling over a shoulder to caress Heero's skin.

I've tried to find myself an approval

I've already been there.

Already done that.

It got me nowhere, it brought me nothing

But a good place to hide in.

No one to confide in.

Now.

Duo kissed Heero passionately as he moved, his pace quickening, taking them both over the edge.

After a moment for Heero to catch his breath, he opened his eyes and looked up into the ones of his lover. "What was that for?"

Duo did not smile and his eyes seemed sad. "I wanted it to be special."

The words confused Heero as he continued to look into the nervous and sad eyes of his lover. "Duo?"

"Ah." Duo gazed into his eyes for long moments, seeming to pierce into his very soul.

"Ai shite ieru."

Duo nodded slowly, seeming satisfied with something. He leaned down and licked the skin of Heero's neck, sending a powerful shock through him before he bit into the artery.

Heero's world fell away with a mindless cry as Duo drank from him. This was different than the other times Duo had done this. He had the feeling that this meant more, but was unable to form coherent thought as the pleasure was dragged out for endless minutes.

At last, Duo released him and pulled back.

I guess you're the only one

That nobody changes.

I guess you're the only one

That will never change faces.

Heero was so tired suddenly. He could hardly keep his eyes open and breathing took a lot of energy. "Duo?" He managed weakly. "Why did you...? Why did you…? I think..."

"Shhhhh." Duo hushed him gently as he released one of Heero's hands. His trembling did not escape Heero as he raised the hand to his own throat.

Heero gasped at what he saw.

His eyes glossy with unshed tears, Duo carefully scratched a line along his skin, the wound bleeding slowly. "Ai shite ieru, Heero. Itsumodemo."

Tears welling in his eyes, Heero nodded and kissed Duo passionately for long moments before kissing his way down his neck to the wound. As soon as his lips touched the blood, his body took over and he bit down hard, breaking the skin with his dull teeth and drawing as much as he could.

I guess you're the only one...

‘"Ai shite ieru, Duo-kun. Forever."’

Well, that’s why I warned ya. I didn’t want to do this but Skitty made me.

(sticks tongue out at Skitty)

She said that it was incomplete without it. I think it lost its innocence and thus, its beauty. But she demanded it and did the puppy dog look and I caved. Ah well. If you hate it that much, cry about it.
