SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:
CHAPTER 9: OLD FRIENDS
Duo and Heero walked from the movie, laughing, as they
took an abandoned street with a fenced parking lot that had voltage
warning signs around it on one side and office buildings and restaurants
on the others. Both had had a few drinks before the movie and were
discussing just that.
"Well, at least the actors were TRYING." Said Heero.
"How could you say that? I honestly think they didn't think they
were being paid enough. Everything was so forced. It was supposed
to be a drama. I think it should be categorized as a comedy."
Said Duo.
Heero laughed. "Ok. I can see that. It's just that I like Nicolas
Cage. So I feel a bit partial to the movies he does."
Duo smiled. "I like Nic, too. But he must have really hated this
project. For an Oscar winner to be that bad. I wonder if the director
pissed him off or something."
Heero grinned and poked Duo's shoulder. "Would you have rather
gone and seen that Julia Roberts movie?"
Duo stopped and began to choke himself playfully. "No! No! Anything
but that!"
Heero laughed. "You really hate her, huh?"
"Yes. For someone I've never met, I hate her as much as I feel
I can. She's sooo.... Grrr. That woman is the undead." Duo grinned.
Heero stopped in his tracks and looked wide eyed at Duo. "Hontou?"
Duo stopped as well and looked Heero dead in the eyes, a small smirk
playing at his lips. "Yeah. She's like Keith Richards. She can't
be killed by conventional means."
The two stared into each other's eyes for a few seconds before Duo
began to laugh hysterically.
"You were just kidding, right?" Asked Heero, surmising that
Duo's behavior was that of having told a joke.
Duo squealed. "Yes. I just hate that woman. And the whole 'undead'
thing is bullshit. We are very much alive. As for her, she's as human
as she'll ever be for a skeleton with hair."
"Yeah, she does kind of look like that, huh?" Heero grinned.
"I never thought about it."
Duo laughed. "I look at people from a different angle. I notice
stuff most wouldn't." He looked around. "I have to take
a piss. Watch my back?"
Heero nodded and looked from one end of the street to the other, ensuring
that should anyone come their way, he would be aware the moment they
did.
He heard Duo zip down his fly, and water begin to hit the ground.
He glanced at the source of the noise, blushing slightly. "Um.......Duo.....?
You're peeing margarita."
Duo nodded his head and looked to Heero. "Uh, yeah, I don't really
do much of anything to this kind of stuff. It just goes through me.
I think the reason we can drink things like this at all is a matter
of protection, same goes for the being able to swallow food. We get
sick later, but at the time, it looks pretty real. It saved my skin
a few times back in the day."
Unbeknownst to either of the two, Duo's urination began
to inch towards the fence.
A shock ran through Duo's body and he flew backwards with the force
of it. He landed on his back, dazed.
"Duo!" Heero rushed to his side and looked him over. 'No
burns. Good.' "Duo-kun, are you alright?!" He shook his
shoulders, trying to get his attention.
Duo shook his head to clear it and winced. "Yeah."
"You sure? Dai ja bu ka?"
Duo looked up at him, a small grimace upon his gentle features as
he placed a hand on the side of his head in pain. "Fine. I just
hate getting my ass kicked by a fence."
Heero chuckled. "You must be alright if you can joke about this."
"Yeah. Nani? Electric?"
Heero nodded. "I guess so. How do you feel?"
Duo blinked, obviously still dazed. "Uhn. ...Ouch."
Wincing, Heero suppressed a shudder. "Yeah, I'll bet. Come on,
stand up." He took a hold of Duo's hand, pulling him to his feet
with ease. 'He's so light. How does he do that?'
Once standing, Duo looked around for a moment, seemingly looking for
enemies.
"Duo?"
Duo looked back at Heero. "Gomen. I'm just a LITTLE bit out of
it. I'll be fine though. ...I just feel like someone I know is here."
He shook his head, zipped up his fly and he and Heero continued walking
down the street. "So what do you want to..." He trailed
off, staring blankly up the street.
Heero looked at where Duo was staring.
Two boys were walking towards them far up the street, both with a
grace boy's their age should not possess. Heero took a closer look.
They were not boys per say. They seemed to be his age. He gasped as
a car came down the street from behind him and passed the boys.
The boys eyes reflected in the light, one's eyes a light, crystal
blue, the other's an emerald green. Heero noted that only one green
eye was visible. "Duo?" Heero whispered, instinct and knowledge
making him fall into step behind the vampire when Duo walked slowly
towards them.
Each pair approached the other, neither saying a word. At last, Duo
stood a mere twenty feet from the pair of boys. Heero stood a few
feet behind him, keeping a distance between him and the boys and more
or less hiding behind Duo. The boys also halted.
Heero studied them. One had platinum blonde hair and clear blue eyes.
The other had light brown hair and bangs that fell into and for the
most part obscured one deep green eye.
There was a long silence that seemed to Heero to stretch forever before
anyone spoke.
Heero jumped as the blonde spoke. "Duo Maxwell."
Duo, who had been nearly statuesque with an expressionless mask, squirmed
slightly. Then more. At last he grinned excitedly and bounded over
to the two boys. "QUATRE! QUATRE! QUATRE! QUATRE! TROWA! TROWA!
TROWA! TROWA!" He squealed as he bounced towards them like a
colt. He embraced the blonde, the other embracing him back with a
warm smile.
"Still the same old Shinigami, ne?" The blonde laughed.
"So how are you? Too busy to call or write? I had no idea you
were in town. Thanks for telling me."
Duo laughed. "I've been here for almost two years, Quatre. I
never knew you were here. Last time I saw you was New York, back in
the seventies."
The one named Quatre groaned. "Please don't remind me of that
dreadful era. So what are you up to? Not stealing too many of my targets
I hope."
Duo frowned. "Hey, is that any way to talk to an old friend?
And besides, how long have you been here?"
Quatre seemed to count in his head. "Almost six years."
Duo smiled. "Oh? Which town?"
"Paso. I love it here. This town is so wonderfully bad at nightfall."
Replied Quatre with a grin. "And you?"
"Templeton." Replied Duo with a scrunched up look. "But
I mostly hunt down town."
"I see." Quatre looked over his shoulder. "Trowa-kun.
Say something."
Trowa's eyes sparkled. "Hello, Duo."
Duo smiled and embraced him, Trowa barely embracing back. "How
have you been, Man? Still on Quatre's leash I see."
Trowa said nothing but Quatre gave Duo a mock indignant look, punching
him lightly in the shoulder, making Duo laugh. "Yeah, yeah. Yuck
it up. I saw your little fence incident. Smooth, regal and dignified
all at once."
Duo blushed. "You saw that?" He placed a hand behind his
head. "And here I was hoping there were no witnesses. Do realize
that you can never breathe a word to anyone." He said, mockingly
threatening.
Quatre put up his hands and smiled. "My lips are sealed, tomodachi.
Speaking of threats, I've been hearing rumors that Wufei is in town.
Or at the very least, nearby. I think I felt him once, but I may have
imagined it. What about you?"
"You kidding? Like I would know. When that guy doesn't want to
be found, he won't be. And you know what he's like. I have heard the
rumors, but I don't know if they are true or not. And I haven't sensed
him." Replied Duo with a shrug.
Quatre looked over Duo's shoulder at Heero.
Heero suddenly became very uncomfortable. He felt torn between running
to the safety of Duo or stepping back and away from the new vampires.
Duo was definitely safe, but he was closer to the two. So he just
stood there.
"Who is this?" Quatre asked, smiling warmly at Heero as
if to reassure him he wasn't going to harm him.
Duo walked to Heero and took him by the hand, leading him to Quatre
and Trowa. "This is Heero Yuy. Heero, meet Quatre Rababera Winner
and Trowa Barton." Then, dropping the lighthearted smile, he
spoke unto the two vampires with a serious tone. "He knows."
Quatre and Trowa looked to him, expecting the first move to come from
him.
Heero was in shock. He didn't want to be, this should have been no
big deal, he had known about vampires for almost three days now thanks
to Duo. What was the problem? 'Um... What should I say?'
Trowa made the first move, extending his hand slowly so Heero would
not startle, and gracing him with a small, warm smile. "Pleased
to meet you, Heero-san." He said softly.
Heero took the hand and shook it, smiling, confidant that Quatre and
Trowa were good people. 'Er... Vampires.' "Hai. Me too."
He extended his hand to Quatre when Trowa released it.
Quatre took his hand and smiled brightly before looking confused.
He slowly moved closer to Heero and peered into his eyes, as if searching
for something.
"N-nani?" Asked Heero, taking a step back and pulling on
his hand to no avail, eyes going wide.
Quatre held tightly to the hand that Heero was trying pull away, peering
intensely into Heero's eyes for a long moment before grinning and
releasing Heero's hand.
"Hello, Solo."

Oooh, suspense?
(Silence)
Damn. They're gone already. Ah well.
The fence thing I got from some Adam Sandler movie. Dont know
which one. The guy peed on an electric fence and Eric(sibling) went
ballistic about the fence kicking the guys ass. (shrugs) Hes
weird.
You probably already knew what the deal with Heero was already. Everyone
else did.
(wanders off)
