"SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND" Written By: Stone Angel
Please see Prologue for disclaimer, ratings and explanations. ^_^ AN: Basically this is its own chapter because this, the last one and the one after it were all one chapter. And that would be way too long, ne? So, I made it into three.
SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:
Duo gazed at the dashboard in Quatre's expensive car. The heavier weight of his hair was a welcome presence upon the back of his neck and he thanked Heero for the thousandth time that day for braiding it. The braid reached his back, the hair longer. The plait was long again. Not so long as it had been before it had been savagely cut, but longer than it had been afterwards. It was at least ten inches in length now. The trees that passed above cast shadows by the moon's light, flashing softly in silver-blue and black upon the dash. The effect was strangely soothing to his nerves. "Duo?" "Ah?" "Heero said that the mark was your sire." Duo felt only a little betrayed by that. He knew Quatre would have found out anyway, and at least this way he was given his privacy. "Yeah." A moment of silence raged through his ears and he reached for the dial on the radio to turn it on, desperate for sound to keep the voices at bay, only to have Quatre gently stop his hand. "I'm sorry." He looked to Quatre who was only half paying attention to the road. "For what?" Quatre sighed. "That you had to meet him again. I suspected he was a mark. I am sorry." Duo shrugged and put up a strong front. "No big." He reached for the radio again only to be halted again. "Quatre." He growled. "I want to hear something. Anything. Ok? I don't want to talk about this." Quatre nodded slightly but stopped him again when he tried to turn on the radio. "Goddamnit, Q!" "What did he say?" "What do you mean?" "What did your sire say?" Duo crossed his arm over his other painfully. "About what?" "About you." He was silent for a moment before giving in and answering the damned question. "He said the reason he left was because he expected me to die within the first week." Quatre looked pained and held a hand over his heart. "That's horrible." "Not really." The blonde’s head whipped to him for a second before turning back to the windshield. His look was of shock, pain, concern, worry and a little anger. "How can you say that?!" Sighing, Duo elaborated as he looked outside at the stars. "Well, think about it. Wouldn't it have been much worse had he abandoned me, expecting me to live?" Quatre was obviously stunned by his logic. Duo swore he could almost hear him thinking, just by watching his friend's eyes. After a moment of deep thought, the blonde spoke. "I suppose you are right. You are wise beyond your years, Shinigami." Duo rolled his eyes dramatically. "Great. Mission accomplished. I made you proud. Now, IF you don't mind, I'd really like to turn on the radio." Quatre nodded solemnly and allowed Duo to turn the dial. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ See? See? Ridiculous, ne? Well, if I didn't separate the previous chapter from the next, it would have been LONG. Like as long as the first chapter. (shudders) Plus this way is more dramatic. ^_^ Did anyone understand why it would have been worse if he had been abandoned and expected to live? I mean, what a slap in the face, ne?
