SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:
Duo awoke the next day in the afternoon. He looked down to Heero who was still sleeping and kissed his forehead before he yawned and stumbled out of the bed, careful not to wake his sleeping lover. He walked into the kitchen, his body automatically taking him to where it wanted to go. 'Mou.' He groaned when his stomach growled loudly. "Oi, damarre. It's not like you do anything. You just sit there while the blood goes straight to my system. Useless." He chided. "And yes, I'll eat." He opened the refrigerator and took a look at the food, immediately slamming the door closed and leaning against it as if to hold it shut, his breathing panicked. 'It's just the food that I bought for Heero. What am I so afraid of?' He pondered the question. 'That Mrs. Jones will make me eat again. How can I be traumatized over something so trivial?!' He opened the door again, taking out a small bag of blood, closing the door as soon as he was clear of it. He walked to the stove and took the pot out of the cupboard above it, setting it down and ripping the bag open with a fang, pouring the deep red liquid into the pot and setting it on the stove. He glanced backwards to the hall to make sure Heero wasn't about to walk in. 'I'm too paranoid. Plus this is ridiculous. I've bitten him, for Christ's sake! Why am I so scared for him to see me hunt or drink blood from a glass? He'd probably be VERY weirded out even so by a hunt. That could put him into therapy for years. What with the killing. But blood in a glass If I've taken it from him, why am I still so shy? He can handle seeing it.' A snide little voice his head answered him with all the strength and pride of certainty. The voice was Reason. 'Because, Baka, that was about giving pleasure. Love. This about damned animalistic need. Feeding.' Duo shuddered at the word. 'I hate it when I'm right.' He thought to himself, sticking a finger into the blood to see if it was warm. 'Ok. How come I don't have natural body heat? Why do I have to heat this shit before I drink it to have anything that can pass as thermoregulation? It wears thin.' The voice shrugged. 'What am I, a fucking Magic Eight Ball? How the hell should I know?' Duo laughed at himself. 'These two-way conversations
between me and myself can be fun at times.' He tested the blood again.
'Kuso. Still cold.' He glanced at the hallway quickly. 'This is taking
too long. Now that I want it to go faster so I don't get caught, it
takes for-fucking-ever.' He pulled his glass out of the cupboard and
set it on the counter in an attempt to occupy himself while he waited.
'Come ON!' He tested the blood again after a few more minutes. 'Good
enough.' He poured it carefully into the glass and quickly drank it,
Heero was sprawled out on his bed, his arms seeming to search for him. Duo smiled and lay down next to him. Heero moaned in his sleep and cuddled closer to Duo. Duo smiled wider and wrapped his arms about his beloved. '"Hee-kun."' Heero moaned again, snuggling even closer to him. 'He knows I'm here. Even in his sleep.' He thought about the night before. 'He said he took care of me. Made me warm. We weren't wearing clothes. ...Did he let his body heat warm me? That would explain a lot. Hee-kun... You're so sweet. Arigato.' He lay there and waited for Heero to awake, smiling down at him as he slept. * * * Heero woke up feeling safe and secure, the scent of rain and night all around him. He smiled, not opening his eyes and wrapped his arms around Duo. "Duo-kun." He heard a chuckle and opened his eyes to see Duo smiling down at him. "Nani?" He closed his eyes again. Duo hugged him tighter. "Just thinking about how cute you are when you're sleeping." Heero peeked open an eye. "And when I wake up?" Duo seemed to think. "Not so cute." Heero picked up a pillow and hit Duo with it lightly. Duo erupted into laughter, holding up his hands in forfeit and Heero began to laugh as well, seeing the un-retracted fangs but not saying anything. "Baka." Duo nodded. "Yeah. I am. Want some breakfast? Even though it's Three." Heero pulled Duo's wrist to where he could see it and looked at the watch. "Wow. I slept in." Duo nodded. "So. What'a'ya want for breakfast?" Heero though about it. "Coffee." He groaned haggardly. "And cereal." Duo chuckled. "Yosha. Wait here. You're in for a treat. I make a mean coffee." He said with a grin as he stood from the bed and disappeared around the door. Heero lay back against the pillows. "He is SO spoiling me. And I love it." 'Is he Ok? His fangs are out. He must be hungry. I can...donate.' He thought with a blush. Duo returned a moment later with a paper cup full of something that steamed and a paper bowl with a plastic spoon sticking out of it. He sat on the bed and looked to Heero. Heero groaned and sat up, leaning against the cherry wood headboard of the bed and taking the food and coffee from Duo. "Arigato." He took a sip of the coffee. "Damn that's strong." Duo nodded. "Ah. I told you. And when I went to the store I didn't know what kind of cereal to get." Heero looked down to the Count Chocula in the bowl. "Is there a hidden meaning here?" Duo grinned. "Naw. I just keep hearing about how chocolate is like the best food in the world and can give people energy boosts. I never had any, save for a bit of hot chocolate. Is it Ok?" Heero nodded. 'With the extra sweet and strong coffee and this cereal, I'm gonna be bouncing off the walls. Oh well. His funeral.' Heero dug in, quickly finishing the coffee and chocolate cereal. "Anou... Dai ja bu?" Asked Heero tactfully after drinking the chocolate milk in the bowl and the last remaining drops of coffee in the cup. Duo paled. "I'm... Good. I'm gonna hit the slums tonight." 'Which is code for: "I'm starved".' Thought Heero. He waited a few moments before speaking. "What about the stuff in the refrigerator?" Duo looked down. "I... Uh... I'm just gonna wait until tonight. I had a little. But... It... It isn't the same as..." Heero placed a hand on his shoulder and Duo turned to him. "You sure?" Duo looked at him for a moment before scooting away slightly. Heero looked at him sadly. "Duo, I'm offering freely. You can. Just so long as I'm not too weak afterwards. I don't mind." Duo looked to him with timid eyes. "I I don't I won't be a parasite, Heero." Heero sighed. 'There's one sure way to go about this.' He moved forward and kissed him, licking his lower lip lightly before Duo opened his mouth with a moan. Heero felt the sharp fangs lightly with his tongue, careful not to cut himself. The two kissed for long minutes as Heero stroked Duo's long hair. After a while, deeming it the right time, he pulled back and exposed his neck, catching the hungry look in Duo's eyes before he nuzzled him at the collar. * * * Heero watched as Duo bounced around the house doing
things in random order. He would clean, read, watch TV, do martial
arts exorcises, kiss him, and then go back to do the whole thing over
again. 'What "Hai?" He grinned manicly at him, shifting uncontrollably in his seat. Heero wanted to run and hide from the five-year-old that had possessed his lover's body. "Duo? Are you Ok?" Duo nodded. "Sugar and caffeine rush." He said with a grin, squirming in Heero's grasp, his leg shaking as he tapped his foot on the floor in an energetic way. Heero blinked. "Explain." "Explain what?" "I thought you said that hardly had an affect on you." Duo grinned wider. "When it's in blood it does!" Heero realized that Duo had gotten the high from him. 'And it's not like he drinks blood from people with sugar or caffeine highs often. I at least know how to control a sugar rush to an extent. This is uncharted territory for him. It's new.' "Mou." He groaned. Duo squirmed more. "Wanna race?" Unsure of whether he wanted to laugh or run, Heero looked at him incredulously for a moment before standing straight. "Duo. We're inside." Duo continued to grin up at him. "So?" Heero smiled at him. "Duo, you know you'd beat me anyway." "Ok. What about wrestle?" He bounced on the couch. Heero sat next to him and put his arms around him, falling back and pulling Duo over himself. "How about we lie here lazily?" Duo pouted. "That's no fun. Wanna..." 'Right now, that would be a bad idea. Ouch.' Heero shook his head. "Later." Duo smiled. "Ok." He got up out of Heero's strong hold with super human speed and strength. "I'm gonna make you dinner." "Duo, I just had breakfast." Duo looked around. "I have to DO something!" Heero got an idea. "How about if I teach you how to use a computer?" Duo seemed to consider the idea. "Yosha. But I might kill it." Heero chuckled. "I doubt that. That thing has taken so much abuse from me, by now it must be as invincible as your stereo." Duo grinned. "Ok! I'm gonna go get dressed." He scampered off to his room to put on more than just a pair of boxer shorts. Heero sighed and opened the door to go to his motor bike and retrieve his never forgotten laptop. 'If he kills this computer, he can just buy me another one. But I don't think I'll let him kill it anyway. Just to be safe. I don't like the idea of having to put it out with a fire extinguisher.' He stepped back into the house to see that Duo had dressed and braided his hair and was waiting in the living room as the sun was on the westward part of the sky and grinning widely at him. 'This should be fun.' He thought sarcastically. * * * "Ack! Nanda tanda hario! You stupid goddamn mother fucking son of a bitch! Hee-kun! What the hell did I do?" Heero looked to the screen and saw that a program that he didn't even know he had was up and running. "Duo, how the hell did you do that?"Duo shrugged. "I dunno. Did I kill it?" "No." Heero closed the program to see the other program that Duo was working on. "Duo. Photo Shop isn't supposed to do this. What did you do?" Duo sighed exasperatedly, falling against the back of the couch. "I don't know! Are all these things so damned complicated?" "Yes." 'How in the name of god did he make it do this? This isn't supposed to be possible.' "Duo... I don't know HOW but you initiated a third layer and now the computer is putting all the images you crop there. But the kicker of it is; the layer is invisible. It's not there. I can't figure this out. This isn't possible! There has to be a third layer for the images to go there!!" Duo looked scared. "You mad, Hee-kun? Did I break it?" Heero shook his head. "No, Duo. It's not broken. I'm gonna close the program though. The picture will be lost." Duo groaned. "Mou. And I thought it was so good." Heero looked back to the picture of the sunset and trees. Duo had added in some clouds and mountains and duplicated some of the trees. He had also painted hints of bright violet like his eyes across the sky in strategic places, making the picture much more esthetically pleasing. Though crude, it had potential. 'I have to admit, he's got a good artistic quality. I wonder if this is related at all to how well he picks out clothing.' Duo sighed next to him. "I'll be right back." He jumped up off the couch and waltzed into the hallway where Heero heard a soft thud. 'Nani?' He got up and poked around the hallway, investigating. Duo lay sprawled face down on the floor. "Duo?" Heero crouched next to him. "Well. I guess you finally got the sugar crash." He picked him up and carried him to the bed. "Hee-kun? Why am I so tired?" Heero smirked at him as he set him down. "You're coming down off your sugar high. It's called crashing." "Crashing." Duo said the word to himself as if tasting it. "This part isn't as much fun." Heero smirked at him again and kissed his hair. "Watashi no baka." Duo grinned lazily. "Hai. Itsumodemo." Heero felt his heart flutter. 'Does he mean...?' "Duo?" He looked down to Duo's closed eyes for a moment, waiting for a response. Duo was asleep, snoring so softly Heero could barely hear it. "Baka." Heero lay next to him, wrapping his arms around him and waiting for him to wake. * * * Duo awoke an hour and a half later and looked up into Heero's eyes. "Hnnn..." He closed his eyes again and winced at his headache. "That's what you get. You're not used to sugar rushes are you?" Duo opened his eyes again and shook his head. "Iye. How come YOU weren't bouncing all over the place?" Heero counted off the reasons on his fingers. "A: I'm used to it. B: I was too busy trying to keep you from killing yourself." Duo smiled wryly and held a hand to his head. "Thanks for the favor, but next time, can you just let me die?" Heero chuckled. "You want some Advil or something? I have some in my bike." Duo shook his head. "It won't work. With the exception of Bioplasma, such things have no effect on me. Plus Advil doesn't dissolve right away therefor I cannot swallow it." Heero nodded. "I was wondering about that." "Ah." Duo nodded and winced again. "What the hell time is it?" "It's Eight." "Oh." "You going out?" Duo pondered before whining. "I don't feel like it. I mean, I'm sorry, but at the risk of sounding immature, I DON'T WANNA!" Heero chuckled. "You want me to heat you a glass?" Duo looked up at him. "....Iye. I... I'll go out. I need a walk anyway for the headache." Heero sighed. "Duo-kun." He held him closer. "You can trust me with this, you know? I'm not going to turn away if I see you drink blood from a glass. Or hunt. I think we've come further than that, ne?" Duo closed his eyes for a moment before opening them and looking back up to Heero. "Ah.... I just.... I need time, you know? I.... No one aside from Quatre has ever seen me hunt. Plus it's dangerous. Things can go wrong." Heero smiled. "I'm stronger than I look, Duo." "Wacataio." Duo replied, looking down. "I saw you take the window out of its place and then put it back in. That thing is heavy. I know. How come you're so strong?" Heero shrugged. "I dunno. ...Hey, if you teach me some of those moves you were doing a while ago, I could totally handle myself, ne?" Duo shook his head. "Hee-kun. You're strong. We're much stronger. You wouldn't have a chance against a mark. However for ningen opponents, you'd be set. I will teach you. But when I'm out there's always a chance that I will run into a mark. That's why I can't just stay home all the time and kill a deer every other night. It is my duty to hunt marks. I can't ignore it." Heero nodded. "I understand. When was the last time you ran into one?" "About three months ago." Duo smirked. "Watashi wa Shinigami. I sent him to Hell." Heero smiled. "What, you told him some jokes?" Duo grinned and smacked his shoulder lightly. "Very funny." "*I* thought so." Heero sat up. "So you'll teach me?" Duo nodded as he stood from the bed and stretched. "Ah." He yawned. "Do you need anything from the store?" Heero shook his head. "You bought stuff to make sandwiches. I think I'll just make myself one." "Yum." Duo said sarcastically. "I've heard those things, though good for you, are tasteless." "Not if you make them the way I do. With enough mustard to sink a ship." Duo smiled at him. "Ah." He looked to his watch. "Walk me to the door?" Heero nodded and took his hand, leading him into the living room and standing by the door. "Hurry back, ne?" Duo grinned widely at him. "Of course." He said as he stood up on his toes and kissed him lightly before walking out the door. * Heero closed the door and went back to his computer,
looking at the picture and considering. "This is really good.
I hate to lose it. I wonder if there's a way for me to fix it. Yosha.
I'll go to history to before Duo started to crop the trees. He can
just add the mountains and trees in later if I flatten the layers.
I wonder why he *************************
