SHADOWS AND LIGHT: AN UNBREAKABLE BOND:
* Duo walked silently up the stairs to Heero's door, looking
back and forth as he did to be certain that no one saw him. He knocked
softly at the door and was surprised when it immediately flew open
and Heero grabbed him and all but dragged him inside the apartment.
He grinned. "Happy to see me?" Heero answered him by kissing him passionately. Duo smiled inwardly. 'He missed me, too.' He and Heero parted and he looked into Heero's eyes with a grin. "Ne, Hee-kun. You busy Monday night?" Heero shook his head and Duo grinned wider. "Wanna go out with me to Quatre's? We organized
a get together. It's Quatre, Trowa, Wufei and, of course, me. And
you if you feel so inclined." Nodding, Heero smiled. "That sounds like fun. They're
all...like you? Nice?" Duo grinned. "Of course. I wouldn't be friends with them any other way. You'd be totally safe from any harm. They wouldn't hurt you any more than I would." He grinned wider. "Wufei may be a little brash and rude at times, but that's just how he is. I don't think he knows how to act differently. Trowa is quiet most of the time and Quatre...is Quatre. He's sweet and good-natured about everything. I'm the hyper loudmouth of the bunch. I think you'll like them when you get to know them well enough. Ok?" Heero nodded. "Yosha. Sounds good." He released Duo. "So. What do you want to do tonight?" Duo blushed. "Anou... What did you have in mind?" Heero kissed him. "Well. I rented a movie. Or we could... It's up to you." Duo smiled sheepishly, placing a hand behind his head.
"To tell you the truth, I'm still a bit worn out from last night."
He said tactfully, knowing Heero might still be a little sore and
to do it again so soon might be uncomfortable. "Movie?" "Segoi." He heard Duo whisper from behind him. He turned to see Duo gazing at the screen with wide eyes. "Nani?" Duo glanced up at him before returning his attention to the computer. "I just... Stuff like this amazes and astounds me. I... I'm not really in the technology loop. I know how to type, but that's it. This... Wow..." Heero laughed. "Duo, these days people don't buy computers unless they can play DVD's as a rule. I got this one cheap. I needed a computer for assignments and I wanted to be able to work on them during my break between classes. A laptop was the only way to go. It's pretty cool, ne?" Duo smiled. "Totally cool. I don't have a computer. This thing with the DVD player is all new to me." Heero smiled and hit the play button and the movie started. He sat back and cuddled up to Duo, smiling as his lover's arm was draped around his shoulder. * * * Heero stood and stretched, looking back to Duo who smiled
up at him. Duo grinned and pointed to Heero's hair. Heero felt it and realized that much of it had been
pushed out of place, sticking out to Duo looked up at him. "Where are you going?" Heero walked towards the bathroom. "I have to go
kill the cat on my head." Heero returned a moment later, his hair slightly less wild. Duo grinned. "I really like your hair. It has that whole 'Nobody tells me what to do' attitude." He laughed. "Trowa's has that, too. I believe you met The Unibang." Heero laughed. "Yeah. That was way out there. How does he see?" Duo nodded. "Yeah, I don't know. It's always been that way, too. Even when he was human." Heero took the opening, sitting back by Duo's side and taking his hand in his. "Ne... Duo." "Hee-kun..." Heero looked up to his lover. Duo's eyes were sad and angry at the same time. "Dameo. Onegai." Heero looked down and spoke, ignoring his lover's request. "Duo. I think we should talk about it. At least." Duo shook his head and tugged his hand back as if it had been burned, wrapping his arms around himself. He seemed to be gathering strength from within. "No." Heero stood up. "Duo! We can TALK about it! What's the harm in talking?!" Duo looked down. "Alright. I told myself I would explain things better to you when you asked." He looked up into Heero's eyes and crossed his legs under himself, curling himself into a ball. "I won't do this Heero. And there's good reason for it." Heero sat on the floor, leaning his back against the couch, facing away from is lover. "Hee-kun... I can't do this. It... It wouldn't be fair, Hee-kun. To you." Heero wanted to scream, his fists shaking in his lap. "Duo." He said coldly and calmly. "How can you say that? It's my choice to_" Duo jumped up, standing quickly and glaring at him, seeming to have found the strength for which he had been searching. Heero shrank back from the look in his lover's eyes. He felt anger flowing from Duo, as if the emotion were waves of the sea, lapping at his ankles. 'I suppose if the feelings are strong enough...' "NANI?!" His eyes burned. "No, Heero! It is MY choice! And I choose not to!" Heero stood as well. "Duo! The only reason that you don't want to is because you think it would be a mistake for me. I don't think so. I think_" "Exactly!" Duo countered, anger radiating from him in stronger waves. "You THINK! Heero, I KNOW! I know how hard it is! You think I tried to kill myself so many times the first few years as a cry for help?!" Duo's eyes narrowed coldly. "I WANTED TO DIE!!! I've wanted to die since then but I'm too much of a fucking coward to do it! You're the only thing that balances me, Heero. If I lose you to this... I'm gone..." Heero thought about that for a moment, still in shock from the force of Duo's anger. "Duo. I wouldn't be lost. And neither would you. We'd be together. Isn't that all that matters?" Duo shook his head, the anger from him ebbing to nothing to become sorrow. "Iye. Heero. I can't condemn you to this. I won't. Heero. This... It..." Duo tried to gesture with a hand, giving up after a moment. He stared into Heero's eyes. "It's Hell. Nothing is ever the same. Nothing. Everything changes." "But you're still you." Heero took a step
forward towards his lover and was saddened when Duo retreated a step.
"Duo. I... I want to be with you forever. I don't want to die
and leave you. I don't want to ever be separated from you. Ever. Do
this... For me. I Duo was silent for a moment as the anger and sadness returned to his eyes accompanied by tears and Heero felt it anew. Duo looked betrayed. "Che." He said quietly, almost in a whisper. "Baka. You're just like Solo." And in a blur of movement too fast for Heero to track easily, Duo was gone. Heero stared at the place where Duo had stood a moment before. "Duo.... Kun..." He looked back to the door to see it slightly agape. "Duo.... DUO!!!" 'What did I do? Why did I do that?! What if he never comes back?! I... I... WHAT IF I NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN?! NO!!!' Heero ran to the window to see the taillights of Duo's car traveling quickly away from his building. 'Duo... Please don't leave me...' He thought he saw the tail lights slow but couldn't be sure as they had not brightened to indicate the use of the brake. When the lights were no longer visible, he walked to his bed and sat down upon the small mattress heavily, staring at the wall. He felt something on his cheek and wiped at it, holding his hand away from his face to see that it was a tear. 'He'll be back.' He tried to comfort himself as he lay back and turned onto his side, clutching the pillow to himself. 'He'll be back...' Heero began to sob. * Duo parked in front of his house and sat in the car, turning off the engine, emotionally drained. 'What now?' He thought. He felt strangely numb, as if he had feelings but they were too far from him to affect him really. 'Is he going to be mad at me? Shouldn't I be the one who's mad?' He thought about it as he looked up at his house through the windshield. 'No. He doesn't know. It's not his fault. It's mine. It's always my fault.' He sighed, stepping out of his car and locking it as he walked up the steps to his house. He heard movement on his porch and took a fighting stance, ready for whatever may come. He straightened as Patches walked up to him slowly. Rather than trying to take Duo down, the dog merely walked to him and sat by his feet, looking up at him seemingly with wisdom and patience. Duo grinned at him. "Nani? What are you doing here? I'm not going hunting." Patches merely looked up at him. Duo felt his resolve crumble slightly, knowing the dog wasn't there for that reason, before he crushed the feeling. 'Boys don't cry.' "Wanna spend the night?" Patches stood and walked to the door. Duo smiled wryly and unlocked the door, allowing the dog to enter first before following him inside. "Yosha. But you leave first thing in the morning before the sun is up. Otherwise you're stuck here all day." He locked the door behind him and then headed straight for his bedroom, walking to the stereo and putting in a CD. He selected the song he wanted and set it to repeat, walking to the other side of the room when he was done, throwing himself backwards onto the bed, an arm covering his eyes. All around me He heard Patches enter the room and felt him jump onto
the bed and begin to lick his Here I slumber The dog continued to look into Duo's eyes as he scratched behind his ear and he whined high in his throat. I don't need nobody. Duo sighed. "I don't know what it is about you, Patch. Even more than other dogs and, at times, myself, you always seem to know how I'm feeling." He felt tears begin to form in his eyes and hugged the dog to himself, as if to comfort the black lab, though he knew that's why Patches had come. To comfort him. He scratched behind his ear again and let the tears come. "Thanks, Patch. Thanks for being here." And in this time of substitute Patches licked his face again and lay down on the bed, drifting off to sleep, his breathing strangely comforting to Duo. I don't need nobody. "Oyasumi, tomodachi. Arigato." Tears leaking from closed eyes, Duo rested his head against the dog's ribcage and fell asleep. You're all I need... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to
