PROLOGUE: A LESSON IN SERENDIPITY

Heero traveled quickly along the country road. It was a darker night than any he had seen in a long time. 'I wish the moon was out.' He thought to himself. 'That would make it a lot easier to see. Why, oh why, did I wait until night to do this?' Heero's motor bike was equipped with a headlight, but it was lacking. It was dim and its beam was restricted to a small oval upon the road.

He sat straighter in his seat, stretching and smelling the night air. In the air he smelled the oak trees above, the smell of the leaves that lay on the ground, the dirt to the side of the road, and the smell of night. 'Oh well. The stars are beautiful during new moon.' He thought, as he looked up briefly. 'Too bad I have no one to share them with.' He thought with a sudden yet familiar stab of loneliness. 'GODDAMNIT, Heero! Stop thinking like that.' It may have been true that Heero longed for someone, but the young man avoided such contact. Almost as if he were waiting for something to happen.

Heero rode along the route to his friend and fellow classmate’s house to pick up a few books and get his laptop. He had lent them to a friend from school and needed them to complete his study assignments for the weekend.

'What's this?' He thought as he came around a blind curve in the road and he saw headlights off the side of the road not too far ahead. They weren't moving. He looked beneath the twin beams and noticed the hazard lights blinking. 'Hn, maybe they need help.' He thought as he neared the parked car.

As he got closer, the headlights turned off. Heero saw it was a jeep. 'So it isn't stuck or whatever.' He thought. 'Probably ran out of gas or something.' He saw the overhead light was on in the cabin and there was a person sitting in the driver's seat. A ...girl? Heero slowed as he approached, looking to the driver of the car.

No... It was a boy, about Heero's age, with a long, chestnut braid brought forward over one shoulder, easily mistaken for female. He wore a black shirt with a small white square on the front of the collar. His face was heart shaped, bangs hanging into his eyes, their ends resting upon his high cheekbones.

He gasped as the boy looked up at him as he approached.

The boy's eyes reflected a deep amethyst in the light of his headlight for a brief moment before they fixed Heero with an expressionless gaze.

'...Eyes don't reflect.' Heero thought to himself, fear and curiosity warring within him. As far as Heero knew, animal eyes were the only eyes that reflected colors in light. Only some animals. And none of them purple.

He came to a halt to the side of the car, eyes gazing widely at its occupant.

The boy looked back blankly for a moment.

Heero swore the boy's eyes were searching and calculating something for a moment before they became confused. He made a circular “roll down your window” gesture with his hand.

The boy pushed a button and the window rolled down.

'My god. He's beautiful...' Heero thought to himself, simply gazing at the boy for a moment. 'Well? SAY something!' He ordered his brain. "..." 'Say something ELSE!' Heero cleared his throat when he could not produce sound. "Umm... Do you need help?" He asked.

The boy's face fell almost imperceptibly before the blank look was replaced. "No. Thank you. I'm waiting for someone." The boy said simply. His voice was as soft as black velvet, his words softly spoken. It was a pleasant sound in Heero's ears.

"Oh. Ok... Bye." Heero said as he sped off, leaving the strange boy behind him. 'Hn. Weird. ...But why do I feel like I should know who he was. Like we’ve met before somewhere?’ He wondered. He looked in his side mirror to see another car come around the bend. Heero knew by the headlights it was an old car. It stopped on the road aside the Jeep and three young looking men got out of the car. Heero was going to turn back, thinking the boy might need help, but he noticed the boy leave his car and approach the trio of men, each much taller than he, with no hesitations. Heero looked back to the road when he knew a curve was coming up, turning and losing sight of the two cars in his mirror. 'I guess that's who he was waiting for.' Heero thought to himself as he continued down the road.

*

The 'boy' in the car watched the other go. 'Hn. Strange. Did I know him?' He turned his eyes back to the front to see a car stop and three men get out. 'Well. I'll find out later. Back to the grind.' He opened his door and approached the three young men with a confidant smirk.

* * *

Half an hour later, Heero sped along the same road, going in the opposite direction. He turned around the bend before the place where he had seen the boy. As he turned, he saw flashing lights up ahead. Getting closer, he took in the sight.

Road flares lit the area in red, the lights atop the police cars flashing red and blue. Officers with dogs on leashes that constantly sniffed the ground paroled the area. There were four police cars, a big black truck, and an ambulance. On the road was a car who's headlights were on.

'Oh, no...' Heero thought. He recognized those headlights. He slowed down, coming to a complete halt, placing a foot on the ground to stay upright when he was signaled to do so by a police officer.

"What happened?" He asked the officer, looking to the car that had belonged to the three young men the boy had met. He looked to the side of the road. The Jeep was gone.

"We got a call by a person who lives on this street that there was a car parked on the road. When we got here, we did a search and found three bodies in that ditch. All their money and jewelry had been taken." Said the police officer, gesturing toward the ditch by the side of the road. "As it turns out, the bodies were three men wanted for the selling of illegal narcotics, grand theft auto, rape, and attempted murder." The officer gave a small chuckle, turning to the old car. "I guess it's just poetic justice." He said.

Heero sat on his bike, staring at the car in shock. "Do... Do you know what happened? How did they die?" He asked quietly, throat suddenly dry.

"As near as we can tell, massive blood loss." Replied the man. "But there isn't a drop around. And no wounds on the bodies, either." He paused and looked back to Heero. "Listen. Go home. We are considering this as a suspicious death. Which means we haven't ruled out murder. Get somewhere safe."

Heero looked to the man for a moment.

Behind him, he saw three gurneys with long black bags on them being pushed to the black truck by men in jumpsuits. Within the bags one could make out the forms of human bodies.

Near them, the paramedics were giving a report to the sheriff. "I can't tell how they lost that much blood. It doesn't make sense." The woman paramedic said, shaking her head confusedly.

The sheriff turned to the coroners. "Alright, get 'em in the meat wagon. We got nothing."

"Kid." The officer brought Heero's attention back to him. "Go home, alright?"

Heero nodded and slowly moved along the side of the road away from the commotion until he was in the clear, then sped off and down the road.

Shadows and Light. An Unbreakable Bond. This is an explanation of the fic and the various terns and occurrences that will be found within.

Disclaimer:
Contains: Yaoi, Het, Vampires, Angst, Humor, Sap, Lemon, Lime, Insanity, More angst, LONG, Blood, Violence, Songs, Attempted suicide, Refference to NCS, Some major stupidity in the beginning.

This story is not about vamps. That’s really more of the backdrop. I did my best to make this story about love. I know this might seem weird to you, so if you can’t deal, don’t read. It truly is just that simple. This is a romance fic. Everything else is just setting. Kind of a ‘love conquers all’ sort of thing. (Shrugs) You decide. The main pair is Heero and Duo, in no particular order as neither are the dominant or submissive person in the relationship. Other pairings are, Quatre and Trowa

Ok. If things in this fic don’t make sense, just write me and tell me to elaborate a bit. I think I got everything but I could be wrong. I have a tendency to make HUGE quantum leaps and my logic is fast. I often skip steps, starting from point A, forgoing Points B and C and arriving at D without anyone else knowing how I got here. My logic train doesn’t always wait for others to get on board and can even leave ME in the dust. Gomen, ne?

I put a shit load of songs in this thing. I had to. I gave Duo my adoration of music. How could I resist shamelessly plugging other’s songs for them? All will be listed in full at the end of the last segment. (smirk) You have a LONG way to go. And each song in here has something to do with either the whole fic or that particular scene. Think you can spot the metaphors?
Um. OOC runs rampant here. It’s mostly Heero(who actually smiles. *GASP*) but there is some for Duo as well. He’s kind of shy in the beginning. But he gets better, chigiru, Mina. As for Heero, he was never trained as a hardened soldier in this fic. Therefore he is not one. Can you follow that bit of twisted logic? ^_^’ He is a just a normal boy with a rough past and he hides from people. Except Duo-kun of course.

This fic contains violence and blood. Did you REALLY need me to say it? A: It’s a war anime. B: This is a VAMP fic. A good-vamp fic, but a vamp is a vamp.

Ok, Physiology, physiology…Ok, a few things that are not explained as I had nowhere to PUT them. I put as much stuff as possible in the question marathons for your benefits (and poor Heero’s ^_~) but not all of it got put in there. I was trying to explain all of this stuff to a friend but she looked at me like I’d grown a second head. I hope this explains some things.
Vamp physiology.

Blood and tea/coffee and alcohol.
Tea. You may or may not notice that the best way for a vamp to get warm, is to drink warm blood. Tea will help, but is not so effective. Confused? Don’t be. It’s simple really. Tea merely stays in their stomachs, giving off warmth from there. Warm blood, on the other hand, goes straight into their circulatory system and thus heats the entire body. Makes sense, ne?

Coffee. As for coffee, it, again, sits in the stomach and, save for the body testing it (as it does for ALL liquids) to see if it is nourishment, stays there. That is where the small amount of caffeine gets put into the system. It IS a small amount, would have to be, but, hey, try actually injecting coffee into your veins sometime. (not really, you’d die) A small amount of caffeine directly put into one’s system really has an effect.

Alcohol. Alcohol is weak and, again, not much of it is used in a test but it is there. It lacks the power to intoxicate as it is such a very small amount and the most one could hope for would be a slight buzz.

Feeding. Blood gets used up directly and there is no waste as it is…well…blood. It is the nourishment itself and all of it is used for kinetic energy. And, as NOTHING is perfectly still, even a shackled vamp must feed.

Blood loss. If a vamp loses too much blood, they will die. Makes sense. If they don’t feed enough, they die and in a sense, starvation is blood loss to them. Otherwise, there would be no hunger, ne? If one did not have to feed to survive, why would they ever be hungry? Am I explaining this Ok? ~_~’

Um. Champagne. Champagne is a mix of a not low alcohol content and carbon dioxide bubbles. Carbon Dioxide really does have an effect on people. There is less oxygen going to the brain or some such (sorry, it’s been a while since I actually studied biology) thing. So I had it effect them here. I don’t know how it works. But this is my fic, therefore I am god. Akenbee!

Alcohol or caffeine in blood. Again, this is simple. If one drinks blood that has alcohol or caffeine or an obscene amount of sugar in it, such things go straight to the body and effect one as they would a human. A vamp can add these things to blood, but it would not be so potent as the body would be able to filter out some of it. The strongest way is directly from a pulse. The human body puts such things into the blood stream where they are well masked to a vamp’s stomach that cares only if it is pure blood. If it is, there is little filtering until later. Then… You crash.

Bleeding. Though their hearts do not beat, they still breathe, get out of breath, and bleed. They have circulation (despite the distinct lack of pulse) but it is weaker so they do not bleed so much as a human. (Shrugs) Ki does it. It converts itself into kinetic energy and gives their blood movement.

Eating. Vamps cannot eat food. Their system is made to handle ONLY liquids. When the stomach detects solids, it doesn’t even bother with a test as it CAN’T be sustenance, and quickly evacuates the un-useful and possibly harmful stuff. Hence the vomiting.

Why do vamps turn to dust? (scratches head) I dunno. They just do. Accept it and move on.
My god, that was morbid. Sorry. But you’ll thank me later for explaining those things. Again, let me stress, none of this is true, it’s all fiction, and all that shit I just went through, though some of it logical, just kind of popped into my head one night while I tried to figure everything out for the sake of the reader. I’m not insane

This is my first lemon. I had to put the scenes in here because things are revealed during them. I’m jumpy as fuck about them though.
There is angst but nothing too serious. But my angst-o-meter is also busted. What can I say? I need repairs. This is not a deathfic, though, so what more do you want? Mainly the angst is over rough pasts or lover’s quarrels.

Again. This fic is LONG. But in no way boring. So far, four people other than me have been reading it and they are all hopelessly hooked, and two of them are NOT Yaoi fans. If I didn’t write, they’d threaten to kick my ass. If there is a lull, it is the quiet before a storm and if you skip stuff it comes back to bite you in the ass later. Chances are that if you start this fic, you’ll want to finish it and that will take a LOT of time. So if you have no time to spare, don’t start. If you have time to kill, go nuts. I’m hoping that you will be as hooked as the other readers. (crosses fingers)

I recommend that if you do not like reading long fics, you turn back now. If you do not like vampires (Ye GADS I hate that word.), turn back now. If you find repugnant the idea of two young men of legal age falling in love and kissing or making love, you are SOOOO in the wrong place and any flames will be laughed at as I ruthlessly pick them apart and make you eat the pieces. And I might just print them to pass out to my friends so we may all point and laugh. This story is Yaoi. That is because it is what I like to read, think and write about. Simple, ne? I eat, breath, sleep Yaoi fanics. It’s sad but true. But this story has a little bit ’o Het. Wufei is with Noin. (shrugs) She was the only option.

Now, for the legalities. I do NOT own Gundam Wing. Well, I do, but it’s a five disc set and they are ALL M.I.A. I do not own the series. Therefore these characters are not mine. Which I suppose is good, for the show would have been quite different with me in charge.(wolfish grin) I just like to borrow and torture them a little. If you sue me, you won’t get very much money. And I don’t have anything you’d want. You can have Bob, whom I shamelessly throw out as a wager during bets I know I won’t win. And he’s STILL here. No one wants him. Grrrr…
I dedicate it to everyone I have loved and lost over the years. I miss you all deeply.
Any additional comments will be posted with the chapters.
