"Music and Notes"
About a month after that, was our one-year anniversary. We both had classes and work that day, but it was all over by Eight pm. Heero had work in the morning and classes in the afternoon. I had classes in the morning and work until Eight so he was going to get home about four hours before me. I will never forget that morning when I left to go to class. "Where's my book?!" I was running around the apartment, looking under the couch, in the cabinets, in the drawers of our one and only desk, inside the bed sheets, in the closet. "I just had it last night! Where could it have gone?!" "Which book?" He asked as he dried his hair with a towel, standing in the doorway of the bedroom. He had already gotten partly dressed even though his skin was still a little wet. He was wearing well-worn, light blue jeans that hugged his hips perfectly and nothing else. "My German book! It has to be around here somewhere. Books can't just get up and walk away!" I was panicking now. "Calm down." "Calm down?! I'm late! Frau Heisserer HATES tardiness! She gives `The Evil Look of Doom' to all that enter the class a SECOND late! And I'm..." I looked at my watch. "A minute and twenty-seven seconds late! That's eighty-seven `Evil Look of Doom's!" He laughed. "Where was the last place you saw it?" He asked as I dove into the closet again and hurled everything therein out into the bedroom, hoping to find the book under all the shoes and clothes. "Why did I even buy all this stuff?!" I yelled and stood up to glare around the room. Ok, I'm not very nice to be around when I'm late. I stress out and focus on stupid things and yell and stomp and, in general, act like a child. I walked to the doorway to look in the other rooms again, and Heero just put his hands on my shoulders and looked into my eyes, stopping me in my tracks. "Shh, baby. It's Okay. We'll find it. Just calm down. If you run, you can still make it on time. I know how fast you are. Now think. Where was the last place you had it?" I groaned and took a deep breath. "I don't know. I put it somewhere last night after doing my assignments. I put it somewhere where I would see it in the morning and NOT forget it." He nodded. "Then it has to be somewhere where you were going to be walking. Right?" "Yeah, but I looked everywhere already, the kitchen, the hallway, the bathroom, it's nowhere!" I gave another exasperated groan and then noticed Heero looking at the floor to his right. He was looking through the crack where the door on the bedroom met the hinges. He guided me back into the bedroom and swung the door away from the wall a little. There it was, my hideously abused and grossly over-colored book, all reds and yellows and greens, with my assignments sticking out of the pages at the top. "My book!" He picked it up and handed it to me. "Baka." "I put it by the door so I would see it and take it with me into the other room. I forgot and didn't notice it this morning when I went to get breakfast and just opened the door so it was hidden." I rolled my eyes. "I swear, most of my brains grow out with my braid or something." "Don't say that, we both have finals next week." He said with a smile. "Come on, let's get you out of here before you really DO end up late and get `The Evil Glare of Doom'." He pulled me out of the room. "Evil `LOOK' of Doom." I corrected as we both walked to the door to the outside. "YOU have The Evil `GLARE' of Doom." "Just for you, you're special." He teased. "I know." I grinned to him. He smiled to me when we got to the door and I opened it. "Speaking of special..." He purred in that voice he always used before sex and I shivered a little. "TONIGHT is pretty special..." He leaned in and kissed me and I moaned. "Yeah." Suddenly not caring all that much if I was late, I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him again. "So... What do you want to do about it?" He flashed me the half-smile I loved and I went a little weak in the knees. I smiled and we shared a short kiss. "Surprise me." He looked over my face and played with my braid a little before he gave me another kiss, this one on the cheek. "I will." "I love you." I said and played with the hair at the nape of his neck. "I love you." He returned. I grinned and kissed him one last time before turning to go, flouncing down the stairs to the street and running towards the campus. "See ya later!" I heard him call after me. "Hurry back!" And then the door shut. Not a day goes by that I don't wish I had. * * * Classes that day were unbearably long. Frau Heisserer, who of course taught my first class, didn't give me The Evil Look of Doom for being late, but for breathing too heavily when I got there on time from running too fast. I just gave her a sheepish smile and took my seat. I had two more classes after that and then I left the campus and headed to the docks. I spent my break alone, since Howard didn't show up to give me a hard time. I just counted down the minutes until I could leave. I wondered if I should have just called in sick so I could go home and be with Heero, but we needed the money and if I lost this job, there wasn't a whole lot else I could do. Fast food? No thanks. Retail? Please. So I just waited it out, working hard to pass the time until finally it was Eight o' clock. I left the docks and came upon a flower stand. Smiling, I grabbed a few bills from my pocket and bought a dozen red roses. Heero and I both loved red roses. They were our favorite flowers. As I was heading towards the apartment I heard laughter coming from the little fast-food joint where Howard and I usually went for my break and saw Howard sitting at one of the outdoor tables with his kid. Did you know that Howard had a kid? Yeah, it was news to me, too. I guess he never told me incase I snapped in battle and decided to go after the people I knew. But after the war, I met his kid. I was shocked. I mean, that meant that not only did Howard get a girl to look at him twice, but to have sex with him, too. I know, not a pleasant image. I got a mental picture after meeting the kid and it wasn't pretty. Hawaiian shirts everywhere. It was enough to make a grown man shudder. Anyway, the kid was a boy who was Twelve and went by the name of Trevor. He had dark hair and darker eyes like his mother and was pretty funny to listen to. He said some of the most off-the-wall stuff I'd ever heard and all in all, was cool to hang out with. We had all gotten some good laughs when Howard brought him along for our soda breaks. They both have endless stories about Victoria, Trevor's mother. Sadly, Howard and Victoria couldn't stand each other after five years of marriage so they split up and, after the war, Howard got shared custody of Trevor. Now they seem like they are making up for lost time. It's great to see how close they are. I grinned to Howard when he saw me and Trevor, who was wearing clothes that looked slightly more expensive than the usual shorts and tee shirt, turned around in his chair and smiled. I waved. "Hey." "Hey." They returned. "So, Trevor, I was planning on beating up your dad for standing me up on my break today, but now that I see the competition, I guess I can understand." I said as I stood by the table. "So you brought me roses instead? That's sweet." Said Howard as he wiped away a fake tear. "Yeah, right. Live that dream." I smiled to Trevor. "So what are you guys up to?" "Dad said he'd take me out to dinner." Trevor smiled. I laughed. "So of course that meant one of the cheapest fast food places in the city." "Hey!" Howard protested. "I just took him clothes shopping and he cleaned me out." "I noticed the new threads." I said with a smile. The "new threads" where a pair of khaki's and a button-up long-sleeved shirt. Trevor was still wearing the same beat-up sneakers he always wore. I would guess the whole ensemble to cost about thirty bucks, tops. "They're awesome. You'll get girls in no time. You're turning out to be quite the looker. Just like..." I looked over at Howard, who smiled charmingly and smoothed back the imaginary hair on top of his head, and then I looked back to Trevor. "Your mother." Howard gave a disgruntled sound and adopted an annoyed expression. "So, Duo, sit down." "Aw, thanks, Old Man, but I can't." I held up the roses. "I have somewhere to be." He nodded. "Apparently." "But I'm free tomorrow. Let's do lunch?" He smiled. "Sure." I smiled at him and then back to Trevor. "See ya, dude." Trevor grinned. "See ya." I smiled again to Howard and continued on my way home. The walk was along the bay and the sound of the water was very pleasant. I stopped when I came to the place where Heero and I had had our first kiss and closed my eyes, remembering what it had been like. God, had it really been a year ago? It seemed so much shorter. Since that kiss, we had become as one. When one of us had a nightmare, the other would hold them and stay awake with them until they fell back to sleep. When one of us would hurt ourselves, the other would always be there to make it better. When one of us cried, the other would cry. When one of us smiled, the other would smile. We were what completed each other. We loved each other. We loved more than anyone had a right to. I smiled and opened my eyes to see the sun setting. The water was an animated imitation of the sky, a shimmering montage of reds and pinks and oranges. I gazed at the bay. At the ancient, "golden" bridge that crossed it. At the birds that flew along the water, just over the edge of the horizon so they looked like shadows of birds, just their silhouettes. I sighed and took in the whole sight, just looking at it for countless minutes. It was the biggest mistake of my life. * * *
