"Insight to the Past"

Written By: Stone Angel

Disclaimer: Oh, please. Do you honestly think I'm making money off this? If I was, I'd be writing a whole lot more and it wouldn't take getting drunk to do it. I don't own the characters or the show, if I did, it would be SOOO different. Screw the war, let's see how we can get Heero and Duo in a locked room after taking away their clothes. (wolfish grin) I just like to make the creators cry with the way I write their characters. ^____^ Mission accomplished. hehehe

Rating: R (just because because)

Warnings: Occult? Definately AU, Blood, insanity(not funny stuff, characters on the edge)
and some older style English. If you are squeamish around blood and/or death, skip this
one. It's kinda dark. Also set in the 18th century.

Pairings: None (gasp! Actually this is a first for me)

Authors Notes: This fic is here by demand. Enough people asked for a better description of how Duo and Quatre met in the 1700's so here it is. It is a prologue and then three parts that are too short to be called chapters. The whole thing is pretty tiny, about 10 pages. The begining is fuzzy but it's SUPPOSED to be as Duo is not in the best state of mind. He's kinda insane.

THIS FIC IS A PREQUEL TO A FIC THAT I POSTED BACK IN THE BEGINNING OF
THIS YEAR, "SHADOWS AND LIGHT AN UNBREAKABLE BOND". IF YOU DID NOT READ
THAT ONE, SKIP THIS ONE AS IT WILL MAKE LITTLE TO NO SENSE TO YOU AND
YOU WON'T BE WASTING YOUR TIME. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Insight to the Past

Prologue

All was quiet on Maxwell street at the late hour...

Pain. It hurt.

'Who in god's name bites people? Who is this man?' Duo wondered as things became dark. `He has me still but I have no intention to give up so easily.' He opened his eyes but was unable to see anything but the man's shoulder in front of them. Thinking quickly, he bit the man back to try and make him stop_

And froze as fire hit his tongue.

After a few moments that were fuzzy at best, he felt himself dropped to the ground. The man whose face of which he had had a mere glance darted into the shadows without so much as a word even as Duo reached out a hand to him in a gesture for him to stay. Out of fear. Out of confusion? Did it matter? When he finally realized the man was gone, he let his hand fall to the ground. 'What just happened? And why do I suddenly feel so ill?' He crawled to the corner of the alley to an old shop that had been abandoned to the rats long ago for the shop keep had perished. He feebly clawed at the nailed door for a moment before standing on shaking legs and ramming against it. He needed to get somewhere safe and warm and away from... What? Away from something but he didn't have the slightest clue as to what that something was.

He slumped into a corner of the condemned building, not even able to care that the door had been left open. Curling into a ball, he wished Solo would find him and make everything better the way he always did. He leaned forward as he became ill on the floor and then scooted away to another corner where he collapsed on his side in a fetal position. "Solo..." He shivered at the sudden cold he felt and quickly fell into darkness.

Duo yawned and stretched cramped limbs well into the next day. 'Was that a dream?' He wondered before he took in his surroundings. The place he was in was as it had been last night in the 'dream'. "Kuso." He stood and collapsed again at the sudden weakness he felt. Groaning, he stood again and this time managed to make it to the door he had broken in. He stepped through and then jumped back as the sun streamed
through a gap in the buildings and burned his side. Giving a shriek that complimented his girlish appearance, he ran back into the old building and did his best to see what had happened. He found no burns to his tattered clothing, only to his skin and no burns to the skin beneath the clothing. 'No fire.' He thought with puzzlement. 'There is no fire there. No smoke, no flame.' Again, he walked out, this time holding a hand far ahead of himself. The line of sunlight hit his hand again and he retrieved it quickly when agony shot up his arm. 'NANI?!' He tried again with the other hand and burst into tears as he received the same results. He walked back into the building and closed the door behind himself. 'I want to wake now. God. I want to wake now.' He sat in the same corner he had slept in and sobbed.

TWO YEARS, THREE MONTHS LATER:

Shinigami was walking along Maxwell Street for the thousandth time with the same purpose. He was looking for the man with dark hair. It was all he could really remember about him. That and the pale blue eyes that
were deceptively innocent. He wanted answers as to why his life had changed so much since that night. He walked the streets alone, looking for him. Sometimes, Solo would go with him. Duo had not told him about
the boy he had killed. His need for blood. He didn't need to know. He liked having Solo as a friend and liked it when he would accompany him on his searches. But Solo always started yelling about how silly it was and Duo always ended up going back to the alley with him until the morning when he went back to his new abandoned building to sleep away the light hours as he could not seem to go outside or stay awake for
very long during them.

Tonight he walked alone. Solo had not wanted to go with him this time and so he searched without him.

He walked around the town for hours, merely looking about for any movement to analyze.

That was when he saw it.

A man sprinted across the street far ahead at a pace that was far beyond that of...well...someone NOT like Duo.

Duo stopped walking and blinked, watching as the man disappeared into an alleyway.

Yes, the man was moving with the same speed Duo had of late. He felt his heart leap into his throat with hope. 'Is it him?' He was about to call out when another man ran across the street, this one with platinum
blonde hair and holding... It looked like a short sword. An antique. This new man rushed into the alleyway after the first and Duo felt drawn to them. 'They're like me! They can help me!' He thought as he ran towards the place. He skidded to a halt at the beginning of the dark gap and looked in. What he saw made his breath hitch and stop.

The blonde fought the brown-haired man with the sword, snarling, even as the other smirked at him and struck out with his own dagger.

Analyzing the situation, Duo felt that the one smirking was most likely the one whom caused whatever dispute they had had. He doubted the blonde was capable of being the cause of such a fray. He seemed...
Angelic.

The brunet caught the blonde with the dagger in the chest and the blonde staggered back a few steps, clutching his ribs. He looked back up and snarled again as he charged, bringing the sword down towards the
man's neck.

The man sidestepped, but the blonde had obviously expected that as he was waiting with what seemed to be a sharpened piece of wood. He smiled in victory as he drove the thing into the breast of the other.

Duo was too shocked to make a noise, merely watched the goings on with wide eyes. What was more shocking however, was that rather than dying, the man merely became ashes and was no more. His attention returned to the blonde who was gasping and clutching at his wound that must have been deep for it stained the fine clothing he wore with a great amount of blood.

He took a deep, painful sounding breath before taking his hand away from his wound and swiping his hair out of his eyes. The blood from his hand painted red across his brow and stained his golden hair. He put
away his sword before stopping all movement and turning green-blue eyes to Duo. The angelic look that he had was countered completely by the blood staining his clothing, hands, face and hair.

Duo wanted to run but something held him in place.

The blonde approached him with confidence and a scowl and stopped just before him to stare up into his eyes, exuding strength despite his smaller stature.

Duo could smell the blood on him, but strangely, he did not want it. It smelled… He did not want it for it did not smell the same way all the other blood had. His attention was brought back to reality as the man spoke.

"What sort of man are you to have seen this and stay standing where you are?" He studied him for a moment. "You are by no means a man. …And you have killed innocents." He pressed the piece of wood against Duo's breast.

Duo closed his eyes. "Finally, someone will do it." He murmured under his breath. He opened his eyes again and looked into deep aquamarine.

The blonde raised a brow at that. "Oh? And what is it you think I am going to do?" He looked into his eyes for a moment before his own became wide and he jumped back as if Duo had burned him. "What is your
name?"

Duo shook his head. "I have no name. You may call me Shinigami."

Well that's the first bit. I like the next bits better but the whole fic is kinda dark. (shrug)

Well let me know if I should continue? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks. ^_^'
