"The Other Side of the Horizon "

Disclaimer: Oh, please. Do you honestly think I'm making money offthis? If I was, I'd be writing a whole lot more and it wouldn't takegetting drunk to do it. I don't own the characters or the show, if Idid, it would be SOOO different. Screw the war, let's see how we canget Heero and Duo in a locked room after taking away their clothes.(wolfish grin) I just like to make the creators cry with the way Iwrite their characters. ^____^ Mission accomplished. hehehe

Rating: NC-17 for GRAPHIC lemon.

Warnings: Hmmm... Well, actually not much. Nothing bad, anyway. I mean, as far as things go, this fic is really fluffy and light. There's Lemon(the most detailed stuff I've written yet) and a little blood but not really enough to count. Oh, some angst but not enough to make it too sad. Generally, this fic is pretty easy to swallow.

Pairings: Quatre and Trowa. (My first 3X4 fic! Yay!)

Spoilers: None really. AU and all.

Authors Notes:
THIS FIC IS A PREQUAL TO "SHADOWS AND LIGHT". It is only about Quatre's and Trowa's relationship and how they came to be together in Shadows. If you don't have a clue of what I am talking, maybe you should skip this or go read Shadows first

Extra Notes: Ok, for those who read Shadows, this is a story about Quatre and Trowa and no one else. Of course, Duo and Wufei are in this but the story is not about them. It is set in WWI times in France. It won't be about the war but it is menioned a few times.

This fic is relatively short. Er... For me anyway. Shadows was 450+ pages. This is only 127. It is really sweet most of the time with a few bouts with angst, hard lemon, slight blood, and lots of humor. Have I
already mentioned how much I loved writing this?

Um... what else... Oh yeah, there's a few French words in here. Nothing too complicated. Everything is either a no-brainer or is implied in English so you know what is being said. Just a note for those who don't
know, French is not spelled how it sounds most of the time. (slams huge dictionary down on desk) But I think I spelled everything right in this. I just hope I got my grammar right. You need to know that "Oui" means "yes" but is pronounced sort of like (for lack of better letters) "wee". That is the only one you really have to know. Any other words from other languages(such as a few in Arabic) are there just for the scene's benefit and are mostly inconsequential. You don't need to know them for the fic to make sense.

"Other Side of the Horizon"

Prologue

1916. Lyon, France.

Quatre was reading from the Quran and sipping a nice, steaming cup of tea when he heard the door open and looked up to see Duo grinning to him from the doorway, only his head visible as he peaked into the room. "Eh?" He looked at his friend slyly. "Something wrong, Duo?"

"Quite." Said Duo as he waltzed into the room and took the book from Quatre's hands, sitting on the bed.

"Du_"

"No. YOU need to have fun. We're going to do something tonight."

Quatre stared at his best friend for a moment before figuring out what had happened. "You chased Wufei out of the house, didn't you?"

Duo pouted. "Mou. How did you know?"

Rolling his eyes, Quatre snatched his book back and made a point of ignoring the hyper active bouncing that Duo was doing on his bed. He could only do that for so long, however. "Should I lock you out of the house?" He asked as he continued to read the text.

Duo grinned over at him knowingly. "You wouldn't. And even if you WOULD, you can't. I'd break the door down."

Quatre sighed, knowing he was right. "So why the bouncy-ness?"

Duo stood up and walked over to the bookcase, scanning the titles of all the books before taking one off the shelf and leafing through the pages. "Found a drunk. A mean drunk. A dead drunk."

"What a coincidence. I've found a drunk as well. Think I should kill mine, too?" Quatre asked distractedly as he watched to make sure Duo didn't tear any of the pages in his First Edition Tom Sawyer.

Duo stuck his tongue out at him before putting the book back on the shelf. "So."

"So?"

"Where are we going?"

"We?"

"Oui." Duo punned and Quatre groaned.

Sometimes he missed the quiet and reserved Duo. "YOU are going to get out of my room, and *I* am going to read until my eyes are so tired that I can't see anymore."

"But that's not FUN." Duo said.

"It IS to ME." Quatre argued.

"Well, I can think of something MORE fun." Duo grinned and closed the book in Quatre's hands.

"Duo, the last time I went along with one of your ideas when you were drunk, we were chased out of town by an honest to god angry mob. I won't be able to show my face in Orleans for the next fifty years." He
complained. He really had liked that place before Duo had played pranks on half the people there.

"Yeah, well this time, it's completely innocent." Duo said with the same manic grin he always wore, making it impossible to trust him.

"What is it?" Asked Quatre suspiciously.

"The Circus."

"The Circus." He repeated and felt a tiny tug on something within himself. `The Circus... I hate those. Then... Why do I want to go tonight?' "Why the circus?"

"Why not?" Duo said logically. "It's in town for the next few days. There's going to be acts like rope walking, knife throwing and animal taming and such."

"All things we can do without paying a cover charge." Quatre said as he rolled his eyes. `And yet, I STILL want to go. Why is that?'

"Yes, but this will be FUN." Duo groaned. "We never just go out and have fun around people."

"You hate people." He stated, raising a brow.

Duo scowled. "Oh, I do NOT. Look. I'm going regardless. But I would prefer it if you came with, tomodatchi domo. So. Are you coming? I think you should."

Quatre sighed and thought about it for a moment before deciding that Duo was right and they never did very much in the way of entertainment. And while he enjoyed reading, playing music and horse riding, every now
and then something different was welcomed. Also, he could not ignore a nagging feeling telling him to go. "You know, Duo, I think that that would be fun. I'll get ready."

Duo's eyes lit up like he couldn't believe his ears and he howled with joy before running into the other room to get ready.

Quatre stood up and checked his reflection, smoothing his hair back a bit more and changing into a slightly more formal ensemble before putting on his gray jacket. `Why do I get the feeling that tonight is important somehow? Well, I'm about to find out.'

When Duo bounced back into the room, they headed for the door of the house and out, Duo leading the way to the circus.

* * *

Quatre looked about at all the people around himself while Duo watched the show. Duo was obviously having more fun than Quatre had seen him have in quite a while, despite his fear of crowds. `Alcohol. It does
amazing things.' He shook his head and smiled slightly as Duo "boo"ed the clowns. `Note to self. Make sure to never go anywhere with a drunk Duo where you are worried about your reputation.'

*

"You're on in three minutes, Trowa." The ringmaster said outside the tent before moving on to make sure that the elephants were ready for the final act.

Trowa finished chalking his hands before stepping out in his outfit, a pair of dark green pants and nothing else.

`Somehow, I think this lacks something constitutional in an outfit. Such as a shirt. Merde. Well, I almost have enough money to leave. Just a few more towns and then I'm on my own.' He told himself as he made
his way to the big top and climbed the ladder to the platform.

Once there, he did a few more stretches and breathing exercises to calm himself before his act. For some reason, he had butterflies in his stomach tonight. It was almost as if tonight was special for some reason.

Looking down over the crowd, he slipped his expressionless mask in place and waited to be announced by the ringmaster.

*

Quatre rolled his eyes at the clowns in the ring.

"I hate clowns." Said Duo from his side.

"I think everyone hates clowns, Duo." Said Quatre, pulling his watch out of his vest pocket and checking the time.

Thankfully the clowns soon left the ring and the announcer stepped out to the center. He was a large man in a black and white suit with a red belt and a mustache that was curled upwards at the tips.

Quatre really couldn't understand that fashion.

The crowd quieted to hear what the strong-winded man had to say.

"And now, it's my pleasure to introduce to you, our trapeze artist, Trowa Barton!!!!"

`Trowa Barton... Should I know that name?' Quatre wondered. He thought it was the most beautiful name he had ever heard and it carried with it some meaning on which he had yet to touch.

Just then, the woman on the other side of him from Duo bumped his arm and his watch fell to the ground.

"Yaha." He swore under his breath in Arabic as he bent to pick it up.

*

Trowa took a hold of the trapeze and swung himself out over the ring without the safety of the net to begin gaining strength in his swings. Halfway out, he flipped and hooked his knees onto the bar to swing upside down. It was just like all his other routines until he was over the crowd and he looked down, something he never did... And his breath caught in his throat.

*

Finally retrieving his fallen watch, Quatre dusted it off and looked up when he heard something sailing through the air towards him. He was lost the moment he did.

Emerald green eyes met his and locked, unwilling to release him from their hold.

*

For Trowa, time slowed and stopped as he gazed into the aquamarine eyes of the blonde in the crowd. The blonde gazed back at him and, for a moment, nothing changed. There was no sound, no movement. He was
stilled, midswing. There was nothing in the world but those two green-blue eyes that seemed as deep as the sea.

And then the world came crashing back and he was swinging away from him. `Kuso.' He berated himself for being so distracted and immediately swung back into his routine, barely catching the other trapeze swung
his way.

*

Quatre looked into the eyes of the man over him. One was partially hidden by hair hanging into it, which confused him as the man was swinging upside down. The man's skin was tanned slightly, giving him an exotic look. His hair was a light brown, slightly reddish and trained in a very unique fashion, short in the back and long in the front with the front hanging into one eye. And his eyes.... Quatre swore he was drowning, he couldn't breathe and all he could see was vivid green.

Suddenly he realized with horror that the man was drifting away from him. `No.' He watched as the man shook his head to clear it and then jumped back into his act.

His eyes seemed glued to him as he went through his routine. `Who is he?...' He startled as Duo nudged his side. "Nani?"

"I think someone was just struck by Cupid, no?" Duo grinned excitedly at him.

Quatre blinked and turned his attention back to the man, recalling what the ringmaster had called him. `...Trowa Barton... A perfect name for him.'

* * *

Trowa finished washing his face and hands in the basin of water he shared with the other performers that weren't clowns and headed towards his tent.

As he stepped up to it, he noticed a red rose on the fabric, held there by a black ribbon tied through a pair of small holes in the fabric over the flap. He untied it and smelled it. `I wonder who it came from. Could it be...?' He remembered the blonde with the deep eyes and smiled to himself. `I hope I see him again.' He looked around to see if the blonde was near but did not see him anywhere. `Damn. I'll try to find him tomorrow.'

He took one more look about and then went into the tent to get some sleep.

*

Quatre held his breath as he watched Trowa take the rose from its binding and smell it before looking around. He was deep in the shadows, hidden from human eyes completely. He wanted to approach the youth, but he knew that that wasn't something he could do that night. `The circus is here for three more days. I'll come back tomorrow.' He watched as the man looked about some more and couldn't suppress the sigh of disappointment when he went into the tent.

`Tomorrow. I'll see him again tomorrow.' He told himself as he turned and walked deeper into the shadows towards his house a few miles away, a small smile playing at his lips.
