Disclaimer: I WISH I was making money off this. And I wish I owned the characters. But, sadly, they're just my playthings and other people who are richer and happier than I can claim otherwise.

Rating: R

Warnings: TWT, shounen ai, sap, fluff, occaisional silliness, humor, angst, blood, violence, language, kinda super natural.

Archive: Steal it or any parts of it and I WILL kill you. I’m not kidding, I’ve seen me do it

Pairings: 1x2

Authors Notes: It's Super Natural in a really wierd way(that isn't even a good way to describe it), *NOT* SCI-FI, *NOT* DARK in the least, and it's something that I'm sure many of us have thought of at one time or another but I've never read anything about it so I'm changing that. Hmph.

I hope you like it. ^_^

Spoilers: Yeah, a few. Unfortunately, they are from several episodes from all over the the series(including the Episode Zero manga) so listing them all would be pointless. And they are things that I think everyone knows already. But, to cover my own ass, if you have not seen the show, don't read. Also, why would you be here? 0_o

Feedback: I will love you forever if you let me know what you think. Good comments adored, CC welcomed, flames laughed at.

THANKS TO... KOHAKU!!! (glomps!), who helped me work out a few things with the fic. You rock!

"Birds Of A Feather"

Chapter 8

The sun was setting as they flew away from it, casting the land into light shadow.

Duo was amazed. It was like a normal sunset, but much faster as the ocean and land zipped by below.

Flying was something Duo enjoyed. He liked seeing the Earth move so quickly far beneath him. Space was fun to fly through as well, but without speed monitors, there was nothing to tell you that you were moving unless you flew close enough to something to see it pass by. Earth was very different. Beautiful. And each horizon had new beauties to behold.

He wondered if Heero had the same feeling about flying in his Gundam, or if he considered it just a limitation. If he felt that it was a bastardization of the true act. ‘It’s probably way cooler to fly on your own, without needing anything but yourself to keep going.’ He thought. ‘The air rushing by alone would make it amazing.’ He looked at his monitor and saw Wing flying to his side, but did not attempt to contact Heero.

They were silent as they flew.

As they approached the building surrounded by high fences just to the East of the ancient city of Rome, Duo split off from Heero’s direct course to skirt around the target along the horizon. He grinned manicly to himself as he prepared for the first bit of action he would have in over a week.

Checking his screens, he panned until he found Heero in the sky far away, heading like a missile for the target.

Then, a number that Duo wouldn’t guess to be under a dozen and a half mobile suits seemed to swarm out of a hidden underground bunker near the building and they all headed to intercept Heero.

Wing landed outside the perimeter and began rushing towards his foes. As they neared, Heero used his spin attack and wiped out four of them in a matter of seconds before taking out two more with bullets. His attack was poetry in motion, smooth, deliberate, merciless, as he came out of it and took care of the next suits without pause.

Duo figured that it was his turn and headed straight for the opposite side of the structure.

He landed inside the fence and pulled out his scythe, quickly walking up to the building. He used his weapon to cut a large portion of the roof away and looked inside.

Under the rubble that had once been the top of the building, he could see a few bodies, but not nearly enough to constitute all the people that were supposed to be there. He moved to another section and did the same to the roof, but this time kept the rubble from falling inside. He found a few uniformed people cowering in the corners of the room and one bolted for the door.

“They’ve already scattered to every part of the building. There’s probably a shelter underneath it as well.” Duo said to himself. “I think an explosion is exactly what this situation needs.” He added with a smirk.

*

Heero took out another three of the enemy mobile suits just by tearing them apart.

He noticed more of them coming out of hiding through the door in the ground and picked up two of the fallen mobile suits that were mostly in one piece. He crammed them into the door, blocking it closed so no more could join the fight.

He didn’t enjoy killing soldiers who just followed orders. It was the men who gave those orders that he ground his axe about.

One of the eleven remaining mobile suits opened fire on him and the bullets ricocheted off the Gundanium.

The noises they caused were loud and irritating.

Just as he was walking towards the nuisance to do away with him, Deathscythe landed right behind the mobile suit and cut it in half.

“Yo.” Duo’s voice came over the com. “Need a hand?”

“Ah.” Heero responded and headed for another one.

Duo moved towards a different one and, one by one, they took them out.

“What about the officers in the meeting?” Asked Heero over the com as he destroyed a suit.

“Oh, them? They’re taken care of. I set a bomb in one of the center rooms. It’ll wipe out everything above, around and below. I estimate no survivors.”

Heero checked and saw that they were far enough from the building not to be blown over by the shock wave, knowing the explosion itself wouldn’t do much to Gundanium. “How much time?”

“None.” Duo answered and a second later, a deafening boom made Heero want to release his controls to cover his ears.

Most of the mobile suits that were still fighting were taken out by flying debris, the shock wave, or the explosion itself.

Heero’s eyes widened as he watched his screen.

One of the ones that had been right next to the building was flying like a bullet towards where Duo was fighting one of the last remaining suits.

Duo cut the enemy in half but wouldn’t be able to dodge the suit that had been thrown at him by the explosion.

The suit would not hurt the Gundam itself, but the pilot within could suffer injuries.

“Duo!” Heero moved forward and pushed Wing between them to face Deathscythe, preparing himself for the impact.

*

Duo looked to his side and only caught a glimpse of something hurtling towards him at an incredible speed before his view of it was blocked by Wing.

Heero’s Gundam stood twenty feet away from him, facing him. But it only stood for the smallest fraction of a second before it was knocked forward by the large, speeding object.

Duo snapped into action as Heero’s Gundam began to fall, and moved towards it.

*

When the blow came, Heero was shocked by how strong it was as the cockpit shook violently. ‘It must have been going faster than I thought.’ He realized.

The straps holding him upright in his seat broke with another impact and he pitched forward and hit his head on the controls.

Dazed, and unsure of if Wing was standing, sitting, or upside down, he grimaced, closing his eyes, and waiting the shaking out.

When it finally ended, he opened his eyes and realized that he was laying on his controls. He also realized that he was having trouble seeing with his left eye. He wiped at it with a shaking hand and looked to his fingers to see that they were covered in blood.

He checked his head where he felt a sharp, throbbing pain and felt a cut right on his hairline.

‘The blood just ran into my eye. I’m fine.’ He thought, relieved that he had not lost sight in an eye.

“Heero!” Duo’s voice came over the com. “Are you Okay?”

“Ah.” Heero responded and wiped at his eye again. He then noticed many different pains coming from all over his body and the muscles in his back spasmed in an extremely painful manner. He groaned and bit his lip. “...Where are the rest of them?” He asked.

“There were only two and they took off.” Duo responded. “We’re the only ones here that are still alive.”

Heero nodded and pounded his fist once on the button to open the cockpit door. That was when he realized that Wing was grounded and the only thing holding him in his chair at all was the one strap around his hips that had not broken. He undid it and tumbled out of the cockpit to land on warm metal.

He barely registered that it was Deathscythe and more or less jumped down onto the ground and walked a few meters away from the machines before collapsing to the barren land.

Kneeling in the dirt, he fell onto his hands, crouched there on his fours, as he tried to stretch his back to soothe the ache without Unfolding. His upper back had obviously sustained some sort of injury that made the muscles that held his wings weaken, but he didn’t know what. He wished he could have remained in his cockpit but if he did Unfold, the small space would break his wings.

Duo had apparently climbed out of his cockpit as well and was running towards him, holding something in his hand. “Heero!”

“Stay away from me!” Heero yelled and his back spasmed again and he gasped as pain lanced through him.

Duo stopped his advance and stood still for a moment. “Heero?” He took a step.

“STAY AWAY!!!” Heero repeated, his voice taking on a desperate tone, and squeezed his eyes closed as he fought for control.

*

Holding a med kit, Duo stared wide-eyed at his partner as he crouched on his hands and knees in the dirt as the burning building cast orange light on him.

Heero’s face was bloody and twisted into a grimace. It was obvious that he was putting a great deal of effort into something, but Duo didn’t know what.

That was when he saw Heero’s upper back...twitch. It looked like two very large muscle spasms in the center of Heero’s upper back, just to the sides of his spine, large enough that he could see them through Heero’s shirt.

The shirt seemed to tent in the two places after that and Heero gave an extremely pained-sounding gasp.

Duo’s blood ran cold. ‘What’s happening to him?’ He wanted desperately to help, but he was frozen in place, unsure of what to do.

Then, it seemed that everything was fine as the shirt settled and the muscles were still.

Heero remained in that position with his eyes closed, gasping for breath, his fingers digging into the earth under him.

Duo realized what had happened. ‘They almost came out and he had to fight to keep them hidden. He seems all right now.’ He walked to where Heero was and carefully put a hand on the other pilot’s shoulder.

Heero jerked slightly but remained where he was, still trying to catch his breath.

Duo noticed he was shaking. Opening his med kit, he took out some gauze and tilted Heero’s face towards him. He used the bandage material to wipe away the blood that ran down Heero’s face and into his eye. He saw the source and when he had wiped all the blood away, he pushed Heero’s hair back as he held a new square of gauze to the gash, applying pressure.

“I’m fine.” Heero said as he continued to pant a little. His voice was hoarse and he sounded a little out of it.

“Shut up.” Duo responded. He wasn’t going to take any Perfect Soldier bullshit at the moment. “Hold this here for a minute.”

“I said I was fine.” Heero growled.

“And I believe I said to shut up.” Duo said angrily.

“We have to get moving.”

“That’s why I said to hold it there for a minute. It won’t take longer than that.”

Heero reached up with a shaking hand and held the gauze over the cut.

Duo took out a vial of water and poured it onto a clean square and used it to wipe the last traces of blood from Heero’s skin.

Heero glared at him but only slightly.

“Just call it payback for the steak.” Duo said as he finished and grabbed the bandage roll out of the box, unrolling enough to wrap it around Heero’s head of unruly hair and hold the square of gauze in place. “There.”

Heero continued to glare at him, but Duo ignored him as he gathered everything used and unused and put them away in the separate compartments of the kit.

He stood up and looked down to Heero. “Can you stand?”

Heero moved back onto his knees and pushed himself up on one leg first before standing on both. He swayed only a second after he stood and Duo caught him.

Sighing, he draped Heero’s arm around his neck and gripped his wrist in the same hand that held the handle on the med kit and circled his other arm around Heero’s waist. ‘This reminds me of something...’ He thought as their position struck him as familiar and he got a sense of Deja Vù. Unable to pinpoint why, he gave up to think on it later. He began walking back to their Gundams.

That was when he really saw what had crashed into Heero and stopped to look at everything.

The enemy mobile suit was in pieces after colliding with a Gundanium wall and said pieces were laying on the ground, smoking.

Wing had absorbed the abruptness of the blow, taking the brunt and merely falling onto Deathscythe, causing them both to topple over.

‘He jumped in front of it so I wouldn’t get hurt.’ He thought in astonishment. ‘How come?’

*

Heero managed to lift his head long enough to see by the light of the very large fire behind them what kind of shape his Gundam was in and stared wide-eyed at the scene before him.

His Gundam was laying face down atop Duo’s that was laying face up. The fact that Heero had fallen onto Duo from over six meters away made them a little uneven, but it was obvious that Deathscythe had caught most of Wing and had been pushed into the ground as well.

‘He caught me? Why?’ He wondered as he stared at the machines. “Why did you catch me?” He asked in as neutral a tone he could manage.

Duo looked at him like he couldn’t figure out an answer himself. After a moment of just moving his lips, he responded. “Who else was going to do it? One of them?”

Heero shook his head and was about to speak before Duo beat him to it.

“Why did you jump in front of me?” He demanded.

Unsure of his own motivation for a moment, Heero blinked before his mind began working again and he warred with himself as he tried to answer. ‘Because you’re the only person in the world that I consider even remotely close to a friend and I couldn’t stand it if you were injured or killed because of my inaction.’ “Like you said.” He responded aloud. “Who else was going to do it?”

*

Duo shook his head and, together, they managed to find a way to climb up their Gundams, get behind the controls and fly back to the safe house on the other side of the world.

^___^

Sorry for the short battle scene. Action is SO hard to write. Anyone who can write long scenes gets my applause.

Now after this is when things kinda heat up a little. As usual, it goes slowly. ~_~'
