"When The War Is Over"

January. 2009 ShenLong

“Hold ya horses! I'm coming,” I cried out to the insistent knocking at the front door. I managed to push the mute button on the remote, place my dinner on the small coffee table and worm my way out of the sagging couch. Finally standing, I began to make the trek towards the door when the knocking started again. “Geeze! Knock any harder and I swear the door will collapse,” I muttered to myself.

“Okay, okay. For crying out loud. What's so damn important you gotta be bashing my door...” I was cut off in mid rant as I opened the door.

“Heero?”

There before me stood the one person I didn't think I would ever lay eyes on again. When the Mariemaia coup ended, you somehow disappeared. Despite your injuries, the fact that you'd passed out cold, one minute you were there and then when I turned around – you were gone.

// When the war is over
Got to get away
Pack my bags to
No place in no time no day //

“Hello, Duo.”

Your voice was exactly how I remembered it, low, husky and ignited a fire deep inside me that I thought had long ago died out. I must have stood there gaping like a stranded fish before you jolted me back to reality.

“Duo? Are you all right? Can I come in?”

“Uh, yeah, sure. Come in, buddy.” I moved to the side, gesturing with my hand for you to enter and closed the door behind you as you did. “Lounge is through that way.” As you walked ahead of me I noticed then how you had changed; grown taller, broader in the shoulders, but the confident air was still there in the way you carried yourself, the swing of your arms and the pride in your step.

Idly I wondered if the emotions you'd long since buried had returned. I remember seeing a glimpse of them from time to time during the wars when we shared a shoulder to lean on, to prop each other up with when it all became too much.

We were boys forced into playing a man's game.

Though young in body, our minds were far older.

// You and I, we used
Each other's shoulder
Still so young
But somehow so much older //

You took a seat and smiled at me as I also sat, picking up my discarded dinner.

“You hungry?” I was quite surprised to find my manners had returned after getting over the initial shock of finding Heero on my doorstep.

“No, thank you. I've eaten. Please, don't let me spoil your dinner.”

“It's okay, I was just about finished anyway,” I replied and quickly scarfed down the last couple of mouthfuls. Taking the empty plate back to the kitchen, I dumped it in the sink and grabbed a couple of sodas from the 'fridge.

My mind was in overdrive, desperately trying to figure out what Heero was doing here. Why had he taken so long to show up? Where had he gone and what had he been doing all this time? Guess if I wanted answers to those questions I'd have to ask.

“So, Heero,” I began as I handed him a soda and sat again. “What brings you to this neighborhood?” The direct approach was probably the best.

// How can I go home
And not get blown away

Ain't nobody gonna
Steal this heart away //

Prussian blue eyes raised and stared off into the distance. I studied that face intently, looking for any clue as to what might be passing through your mind. As usual, you kept your features neutral.

“I... I was hoping...”

His expression changed as he searched for words, his face became vulnerable, there was a lost look in those eyes and I felt my heart ache for him.

// When the war is over
Got to start again
Try to hold a trace of
What it was back then //

“When we defeated Zechs, White Fang, Oz and Romefeller, I wasn't sure what to do with myself. Then Barton came along with his intent to carry through on the original plans and I found my skills needed again. As much as I was grateful for the peace, I couldn't settle down. All my life I've been trained as a weapon, from working with Odin to when J picked me up. Once all the fighting was over I left.”

“Yeah, I kinda know that,” I replied with a smile. “I thought you'd gone to the hospital, but when I checked them all, no one matching your description had been admitted anywhere. I could only assume you must have left with Relena, that she was looking after you.” My voice began to crack a little as deeply buried feelings began to break free from the dark recess I'd forced them into.

Blue eyes gazed at me intently as you spoke again. “I went far away, where no one would know me and tried to live normally, only I don't know what normal is.”

“Oh, Heero,” I said softly, my heart aching.

// You and I, we shared
Each other's stories
Just a page that's
Lost in all its glory
How can I go home
And not get blown away //

“I remember when we used to share dorm rooms, bedrooms at the many safe houses during the wars. We talked; you shared a lot of yourself with me, your past, and your hopes for the future.”

“We did,” I replied with a touch of amusement, remembering the many stories we had shared, not just our past and present, but our dreams and hopes for the future.

“Duo, after the wars, Quatre went back to L4 to rebuild, Wufei joined Preventer, Trowa had the circus and you had Hilde and the scrap yard... I didn't have anywhere to go back to. There was no one waiting for me, well, not with open arms anyway. There were plenty waiting with a loaded gun though.”

// You and I had our sights
Set on something
Hope this doesn't mean
Our days are numbered //

Heero's words jolted me to the core and I turned my gaze fully on him. “Don't say that!” I hissed. I rose from my place on the sofa and walked over to stand before him. Looking down at him, I dropped my eyes and whispered. “You obviously weren't listening when we traded stories.”

Heero stared back at me, his gaze troubled. “I did listen to you, Duo. I listened very carefully.”

“Then if you did, you'd know there would always be a place here with me for you. I would be waiting with open arms, Heero.” I paused to swallow the lump in my throat. “I sincerely hope that your turning up here doesn't mean you plan only to stay for a short while. I meant what I said all that time ago; I still do.”

// I've got plans for more
Than a wanted man
All around is chaos and madness
Can't help feeling
Nothing more than sadness //

“But, Duo. There are people out there that want nothing more than to see me dead. I couldn't ask you to live with that.”

I dropped to my knees and placed my hands on your thighs, looking up into sad, blue, I spoke again, from the heart. “Heero, I fell in love with you when we first met, that love has only grown over the passage of time. Even when you were missing for all this time, I've never stopped loving you. I don't care if you're a wanted man by some people; I want you. Without you in my life there's nothing but madness, chaos, and I'm sick of it. Now that you've finally come home, I'm not about to let you go again.” taking the chance, I lean forward and press a gentle, chaste kiss to your lips.

// Only choice to face it
The best I can //

Pulling back from that kiss I can see the wheels turning in your head, processing the information and drawing your conclusions. Whilst to others this would seem robotic, inhuman, to me it's the loveliest sight in the world, for this is the man I fell in love with and I wouldn't change him for the world.

Those cobalt eyes clear, your decision made, you lean forward and partake of a deep kiss, a kiss I'm only too willing to allow and encourage.

“Thank you.”

Those words are whispered softly against my lips and my heart leaps in my chest.

// Ain't nobody gonna
Steal this heart away
And not get blown away ... //

I know now that I will forever have you in my arms and my life; and if anyone should try to take you away they will have to face the wrath of Shinigami, for he will not give up his lover.

I feel your arms wrapping around me and I allow myself to be drawn into your lap and embrace.

“I love you, Heero. Welcome home.”
