"Sword Play"

March. 2003 ShenLong

Duo watched from the window, fascinated, as Wufei continued with his morning ritual unheeding of the violet eyes that devoured his routine with greed. Duo sighed, the flowing movements of the bronzed body as it moved fluidly with practiced ease, muscles straining and bunching under skin as they flexed and bent, controlling and guiding the body in its dance of death. The katana held high one moment and then slicing through the air as it dueled with an invisible foe.

Sunlight glanced off the blade as it arced downwards then swung to the left, followed by a slash to the right, a twist of the body and the sword followed the flow of movement to slice upwards once more.

Duo was totally mesmerized. He had been watching Wufei for days now, his infatuation with the Chinese pilot and his morning exercises turning into obsession. He couldn't help himself. Oh it wasn't that he was interested in the other pilot *that* way, after all he had his Heero in his bed whenever they got the chance and the perfect soldier was more than capable of satisfying Duo's sexual appetite.

No it was the sword that held Duo's attention.

He wondered when he had become so captivated by the shining piece of craftsmanship. Each day Wufei would practice with the blade and Duo would watch secretly. He had only been up close and personal with Wufei's blade once... and he knew it was sharp. Especially when the pointy bit was poised at your throat. That taught him never to sneak into the safe house again.

Once Wufei had calmed down and stopped his rantings and Duo had regained control of his shaking body, he had asked about the sword. He couldn't help noticing the detail and love that had gone into the making of the steel. Possessing knives of his own Duo was an avid admirer of anything so well made. He could understand and appreciate the value in having a blade so detailed in craftsmanship and wanted to know more about Wufei's particular item.

Wufei hadn't given him a lot of information though; just enough to tickle his inquisitiveness. When asked to be able to handle the sword Wufei had declined. It was his pride and joy, something sacred to him. It had been given to him when the colonies first rose against the oppressing forces along with his Gundam. It was the only thing tangible besides ShenLong that he had left of his home colony now and he guarded the blade with a vengeance.

To say Duo was a little miffed that Wufei wouldn't let him handle the blade would be an understatement. He was majorly pissed off. "I'm not going to hurt it Wuffy." he had whined, but Wufei stood firm. No it was his personal property and he wouldn't allow anyone to touch it. Having suffered defeat in a duel with Treize he was bound by his inner turmoil to train with the sword as much as possible in preparation for a re match that would see him regain his honor.

So Duo had wheedled, cajoled, begged, threatened, cried, whined and even offered Wufei a look at his own impressive collection of knives in return for being allowed to handle the sacred sword and feel its prowess in his hands but Wufei would not relent.

So Duo was reduced to this... spying on his friend and copilot.

Then one day Duo's chance came.

They were sharing a safehouse once again, Trowa and Quatre were yet to arrive from a mission, being due the next day. Heero and Duo were enjoying some down time in between missions which mainly consisted of them eating, sleeping and screwing each other silly. Wufei was present as well and did his best to ignore the series of interesting sounds that emanated from pilot 01 and 02's bedroom. He practiced daily with his katana, keeping himself fit and ready in both mind and body for his next mission.

Heero had gone to fetch supplies and Duo was busy watching from the upstairs bedroom while Wufei swung the blade. With a sigh of disappointment he turned from the window. Wufei had finished and was busy sheathing the sword. Duo went downstairs and to the kitchen to get something to eat.

Wufei entered the house and nodded to Duo before heading for his room, sword safely in his hands. A few moments later he reappeared carrying a small bag. Duo looked up in interest as Wufei paused at the door.

"I have a mission."

Duo cocked an eyebrow.

"It's recon. I will be back tomorrow." Wufei turned and left without another word being spoken.

Duo sat and listened as the sound of the bike disappeared, then with a feral grin he stood and went up the stairs.

Pushing the door to Wufei's room open slowly he glanced around, body and mind on automatic search mode for any traps that Wufei may have set. Scanning around he deemed the area to be clear and stepped into the room making his way silently across to the small closet where he knew Wufei kept his treasured weapon. He knew Wufei had left the sword behind, the bag hadn't been big enough to carry it and it wasn't strapped to Wufei's body either. So by the powers of deduction Duo figured the sword had to be in here somewhere.

Now if he could only find where.

Duo spent a good ten minutes carefully sifting through Wufei's closet trying to locate the hiding place of the katana. Finally he was rewarded for his efforts and pulled the enchanting item from the dark depths. With a grin he scampered back down the stairs and out into the back garden. He wanted to examine the piece in the sunlight where it deserved to be admired. He found a nice flat rock and sat upon it laying the scabbard and its contents across his knees.

With loving fingers and glazed eyes he took in the detail of the black leather. The scabbard was tough and had gold brocade winding around its upper end. A delicate gold inlay of a dragon adorned the sheath as the cord drifted off the edge for securing around its owners person. Duo's fingers traced over the soft work and a puff of air escaped his lips as he drooled over the detailed artwork.

His gaze shifted to the hilt of the sword. No wonder Wufei called it his dragon sword. The handle was soft under his palm, green and gold metal entwined with the softer silver of the hand piece indicating a dragons tail wrapped securely around the grip, the colors leading to the end of the sword where the metals combined to form the rest of the dragons body and head. Duo looked closer, the intricate carving and shaping of the dragon down to the scales that adorned its back was mesmerizing. Duo swallowed hard. Who ever had made this sword was indeed a craftsman of the highest order. The loving detail that had gone into it evident even to an amateur.

Duo pulled the gleaming blade from its resting place and promptly drooled. The sun bounced off the shining metal, the edge razor sharp and Duo was again reminded of how much care Wufei paid the piece. The blade was fine honed and beautifully polished. Duo stood and placed the scabbard on the rock. He weighed the sword in his palm before closing his fingers around the hilt and closing his eyes in delight. It was perfectly balanced and felt light and easy in his hand.

He gave a couple of experimental swipes and chuckled with the sensation the sword evoked. He could feel a tingling in his arm, as if the sword were talking to him. Closing his eyes he took the blade and began a series of cuts and slashes through the air, the weapon so light and balanced in his hand it was if it were a continuation of his body. Now he knew why Wufei was so protective of the piece.

Continuing with his mock attack he didn't hear Heero return from his shopping trip. Absorbed fully in the battle only he could see, he continued to swing the blade through the air, slicing cleanly through enemies, cutting them down as they dared to cross his path.

Heero returned and immediately wondered where his braided partner was. The house was silent which was unusual for Duo, he was normally ensconced in cartoons or whatever else he could find on the television. Curious, Heero wandered through the building trying to find his missing koi. A noise from outside drew him to the kitchen window and he stared out at the sight.

Duo on the lawn moving gracefully to a dance only he could hear, swinging Wufei's katana around in mock defense.... Hang on a minute....

Wufei's katana?

Oh shit! Wufei never let anyone touch his sword, even Heero knew better than to ask. That could only mean one thing....

Duo had nicked it.

Heero had no clue as to where the Chinese pilot was and nor did he care at that point, his main focus was on Duo and what the hell he was doing with Wufei's most treasured possession. If Wufei was to find him with it then Duo would no doubt be finding out just how sharp that sword really was and Heero was kind of attached to the idea of Duo staying in one piece. It wouldn't be the same screwing a shish- kebab.

Contrary to belief Heero did feel pain just as much as the next person. He had just been taught to accept it and show no weakness, but that didn't mean he was suicidal enough to approach Duo while he was prancing around with such a weapon in his grasp. Heero was very fond of his arms and legs and wished to see them remain a part of him for some time to come and so he called out to Duo instead.

"Duo! What are you doing?"

Still locked in his fantasy world Duo swung the blade through the air, cutting down another foe who tried to stand between him and his goal. A shout of his name from the side caught him unawares and he jumped a mile in shock. As he jumped so his eyes opened wide and he lost his balance. Arms and legs flailed for a moment before the world spun off kilter and Duo fell to the grass with a thud, the sword still grasped in his hand.

To Heero the sight before him went into slow motion. Duo spun around as he heard Heero's call and lost his balance. He went crashing to the ground but Heero's eyes followed the line of the sword as it descended with him, blade pointing outwards as Duo flung his arm away from his body to prevent himself from being sliced. As Duo connected with the unforgiving earth so the tip of the blade connected with the rock....

....and broke.

Duo was scrambling to his feet in an instant, Heero stood rooted to the spot, unable to move as he watched the tip of the sword depart from the rest of the blade, the only thing that ran through his mind was that Wufei was going to kill Duo.

Duo stood in shock and the handle slipped from his grasp to land on the earth. He stared numbly at the broken pieces. "Oh shit!" His mind helpfully supplied him with various images of what his up coming funeral would look like once Wufei was done with him.

Heero managed to move at last and stood beside his koi. "What the hell were you doing Duo?" he hissed.

"I only wanted to look at it. Honest."

"Wufei is going to be breathing fire when he finds out."

"Do we have to tell him?"

Heero snorted. "Of course we do baka!"

"Maybe if I put it back he won't notice."

"I hardly think that will happen. The tip's damn well broken off, it's a bit hard to miss it."

"At least it will give me a head start to disappear." Duo looked at Heero hopefully. "Protect me Hee-chan... Please..." Duo begged.

"No way Duo. I am not even going to think about standing between you and Chang when he finds out what happened. I might be crazy but even I am not that desperate to die."

"I guess I shall just have to appeal to his sense of honor then, to trust me that it was an accident." Duo knelt on the grass and he picked up the sword, which weighed more than his soul, wondering just how he was going to break the news to Wufei.

****

Wufei arrived back at the safe house and immediately picked up on the air of somberness. He walked into the kitchen and dropped his bag on the floor. Duo looked up from his coffee cup, fear and hesitation written in his face. Wufei cocked an eyebrow and swiveled his gaze to Heero who was similarly holding a cup of coffee but looking more apprehensive that anything. Wufei knew something was up and he had a feeling it was to do with him.

"Okay Yuy; want to tell me what is going on?" Wufei folded his arms across his chest and waited.

Heero took a swallow of his coffee and stared back. "No."

Wufei tilted his head in surprise. "Oh. Why not?"

"It's not Heero's fault Wuffy, it's mine. I know I shoulda asked, I had no right to touch it and I'm sorry but you gotta believe me... it was an accident man, I didn't mean for it to happen. It kinda all happened so fast, one minute I was standing there and then Heero yelled and It scared me so I fell and it kinda broke and I 'll get you another one I swear just please don't kill me..." Duo babbled on hysterically. As his speech flowed forth so Duo scraped his chair back and eyed off his potential escape routes.

Heero tensed in his chair, ready to spring into action if the conflict got too bloody.

"What are you rabbiting on about Maxwell? What did you touch? What did you break?" Wufei could feel the anger rising inside and he did his best to try to keep it contained for the moment.

"Ummm... Please promise me you wont kill me Wuffy but I couldn't help myself, I have wanted to touch it and see it for ages and you wouldn't let me so I guess I just helped myself...."

"What - Did - You - Do?" Wufei's eyes disappeared into tiny slits.

Duo swallowed hard. "Your katana." he whispered.

"My katana?"

"Yes. I had an accident with it... the tip kinda broke but I'll replace it Wuffy I swear, I didn't mean for it to happen, it was an accident, honest... eep... oh fuck!"

"MAXWELL!!!!" Wufei lunged.

Duo jumped to the side and was off out the door and running for his Gundam before Wufei could complete the lunge.

Wufei dived after the fast disappearing braid. Heero scraped his chair back as he stood and carried his cup to the sink. He rinsed it out as he stared out into the forest at the edge of the back lawn. "Well that didn't go too badly." he said to no one as he heard the sounds of DeathScythe powering up.

Wufei returned a short while later, a pleased smirk on his face. Heero cocked his head in question. "Did you murder him? And if so where did you put the body?"

"No I did not murder him. He managed to get into his Gundam and get away before I had that pleasure." Wufei made himself a cup of green tea and sat calmly at the table.

"Excuse me for saying this Chang but you seem awfully calm for someone who's prized possession has been broken and the perpetrator has gotten away. Are you sure you haven't left him out there in the forest strung up?"

"No I haven't. Like I said before Yuy, he got away." Wufei quietly studied his cup, a small smile playing on his lips.

"Then may I ask what you are finding so amusing?"

"He didn't break my katana."

"Pardon?"

Wufei put his cup down and stared at the Japanese pilot. "I knew how infatuated he was with my sword and the fact that I wouldn't let him touch it. The katana was given to me by my clan elders and is all I have left of them. With this mission and the way Maxwell has been watching me practice lately I had a feeling he would take the opportunity of my being on a mission to inspect my property. The sword he broke is a replica."

"Nani?"

"I only use my real sword in battle Yuy. I practice with a carefully crafted replica. I will not subject my trusted weapon to daily exercises lest something such as this should have happened. The sword Maxwell found in my room and broke is nothing more that an imitation of the real sword. The real one I have hidden safely away where no one will find it." Wufei looked smug.

Heero shook his head. "So shouldn't you contact Duo and let him know?"

"And spoil his little guilt trip? I think not, besides it will teach him a lesson."

Heero snickered. "I guess it couldn't hurt to let him stew for a while."

Wufei stood and put his cup in the sink then reached for his bag. He paused at the door. "I will contact him in the morning." With a bow he was gone.

Heero gazed at the vacant space in the doorway and couldn't help the laughter that rose in his chest. This time the joke was on Duo.
