Sunset Over The Horizon
Part 4 Wu Fei paced, phone in hand, in front of the living room window, watching for Sally to return home. He had rung the office at 5.15 to see if she had left and had been informed that she had indeed left the building. That was two hours ago and there was still no sign of her. He assumed that she may have stopped by Zechs’ and Noin's on her way back to drop off the report he had prepared earlier this afternoon before he himself had left work, but after several attempts to call them and getting only the answering machine he decided to ring the office once more, just in case Sally had returned there for something or other she may have needed to do. He stopped his pacing long enough to dial the number for the office and then continued as he waited for some one to answer. "Preventers, main office. How may I help you?" “It’s Wu Fei. I’m just calling to see if my wife has returned to the office at all, as she has not yet returned home.” He held his breath hoping for a positive response. “I’m sorry sir but as far as I know your wife left the building over two hours ago now. Would you like me to see if some one else knows of her whereabouts?” Wu Fei sighed a little and took a quick glance out of the window. “I would appreciate that. Yes. Thank you” “I won’t be a moment then sir. Please hold and I’ll put you through to the main gate.” A clicking sound resonated through the earpiece as the call was transferred through. “Main gate. How may I help you?” “It’s Wu Fei here. I was wondering if you could tell me whether or not my wife has left yet?” “Hold on one moment sir, I’ll just check the exit passes. That should tell us if she has or not.” Wu Fei waited for what seemed like forever, but he was worried and concerned. Sally would have notified him if something else had come up and not gone off without warning like this. It wasn’t her style. A few moments later the gate officer returned. “Was she working back late sir? Because I haven’t got her exit pass here which means she hasn’t left yet.” The gate officer listened to the anxious silence on the other end and offered his services once more. “I’ll go and check to see if her car is still here sir. Her parking isle number isn’t far from this office.” Wu Fei had no choice other than to take whatever assistance the gate officer gave him. What other choice was there? “Thank you Your assistance in this matter is appreciated.” Again he waited hoping only for a positive reply concerning his wife. ~*~ Itel lay quietly in her bed looking up at the ceiling. She definitely liked her new surroundings, and her new parents to be. Duo pulled her curtains shut and Heero leant against the door frame watching the other boy play dedicated father. A small grin crept onto the dark-haired boy’s face as the ex-Gundam pilot 02 darted about tucking the girl in, adjusting the night light, fluffing her pillows etcetera. Finally it looked like the boy had completed his *mission* and Heero grinned as Itel held Chester up for Duo to kiss goodnight, happily the braided baka complied. “Night Chester.” he began, smooching the bear on the nose. “Night Itel.” He said giving the same attention to the young girl’s forehead. He smiled at the happy look on the girl’s face as she held the bear out towards his husband’s direction. Heero’s eyes widened and he looked over at Duo for a way out. “Your turn I believe.” Duo smirked cheekily as he took the bear from Itel and walked it over to meet the death glare of one unimpressed Heero Maxwell-Yuy. “Aww now c’mon Heero ya gotta kiss Chester goodnight, right Itel?” He said with a quick glance back at the girl who was grinning from ear to ear. She could tell that Heero did not want to do this at all, but she also knew that between the two of them, herself and Duo, that they would be able to annoy him enough to make it happen. “Yup, ya gots'ta kiss Chester, he’ll be upset if ya don’t Heero.” Itel said with a serious tone in her voice. “And then ya gots'ta gimme one too cause it’s s’posta help us blond a bit ya know!” “Blond?” Duo questioned. ”Don’t you mean bond?” Itel placed her hand over her mouth as she giggled. “Ooops yup that too.” Duo laughed and gave Heero a gentle nudge forward and handed him the bear. “Drop the tough act for a few koi, it won’t hurt you just to give it a try.” He said whispering in Heero’s ear. Heero sighed defeated. He knew what they were up to and that there was no point in even trying to get out of this now. If he did try they would only continue to bug him until he gave in anyway, so he might as well just do as the braided baka asked and get this whole embarrassing scenario over and done with. He slowly looked from Itel to Duo and then back at Chester. Sighing he pressed his lips to the bears nose. “Goodnight Chester.” Duo chuckled and avoided yet another death glare as Heero turned his head back towards him for a split second before returning his gaze to the little imp before him smiling *innocently*. “I suppose you want one too right?” he said looking sternly at the girl trying to put her off wanting the same treatment too. “Don’t ya wanna kiss me goodnight Heero?” she asked him quietly. "Or are ya mad at me cause of the Jell-O thing?” Heero glanced back at Duo, catching the other boy's shocked look. For once Heero didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t mad at her at all, but she was obviously starting to blame herself because of the earlier incident. Suddenly he felt a little guilty. "I'm not mad at you Itel it’s just that… Well I’m not used to this yet.” He began, trying to explain things to her. “You see, I really haven’t been around a lot of young children like you before and I haven’t had the opportunity to spend time with them like Duo did when he was younger.” Duo threw a small encouraging smile at his partner and Heero walked forward stopping beside the bed. He knelt down and looked into the hazel eyes that were sadly staring up at him. Slowly the young man knelt by the side of the bed and Duo continued to watch in total silence as the once well renowned perfect soldier gently reached over and touched the young girl’s cheek. “I’m sorry if I seem so bad tempered and grumpy all the time Itel. I haven’t really known many people that I’ve been close to. This is as new to me as it is to you, I need time to adjust to all this.” Duo stepped forward too and following Heero’s lead knelt down beside his koi.“ Heero originally didn’t want to adopt, Itel." he began to explain. "He was worried that he wouldn’t be a good enough father because of the lack of love he received during his childhood. He and I were brought up on two different colonies and very differently, yet when he and I met we discovered that we were fighting for the same thing and even on the same side and I fell in love with him; but it was hard for Heero to let his emotions go after all his training." Itel gave him a puzzled look. “What did ya train for Heero?" "I was, that is, we were..." The boy paused glancing over at his lover for a little support. Normally the direct approach would be the best way, but how do you explain to a child who would have been merely a baby during the wars, that you were once a cold hearted killer, even if it was for the good of the colonies? "We were pilots Itel." Duo informed the girl without going into detail. It was best that she stayed unfamiliar with their activities of the past. "You see, Heero never had some one to show him what affection was and like I said before, we were both brought up on different colonies so even the training for Heero was different from mine.” He turned looking directly into Heero’s eyes. “After the wars we went our separate ways and even though I loved Heero with all my heart, Heero wasn’t sure of what he really felt and I ended up in a total mess. I was on drugs and doing really stupid things all because I felt that Heero didn’t love me.” He paused, looking back at Itel. “But why did ya get married then if ya don’t know how to feel emotions then?” Itel inquired, captivated at the events being placed before her. Not once did her eyes leave either of them as the tale unfolded some more and she waited patiently as Heero continued. “Duo and I went through a lot together. We met up again and started living together. I helped Duo stay away from the drugs and bad things and he tried to show me how much he loved me, but I was stubborn and I wouldn’t acknowledge my feelings for him. I really hurt Duo a lot but when I finally understood how I felt, it was almost too late and I nearly lost him altogether.” “So what made ya realize that ya loved Duo then?” Itel asked, curiously. “I hurt Duo’s feelings badly and he left. It was only then that I realized that I loved him more than anything, although, even now it’s still hard for me to tell him how I’m feeling.” “But I know that you love me Heero.“ Duo reassured him. "And you should know by now that it doesn’t matter to me if I don’t hear you say it, because you always do something to show me that you care." Heero blushed Itel sat upright. “And I don’t think you hafta worry ‘bout bein’ a bad father. No one’s ever stuck up for me before like you and Duo did today; ‘cept for my mom and dad, but… but they’re gone and I have no one else but you two now.“ Suddenly the young girl threw her arms around the unsuspecting ex-Gundam pilots, hugging them tightly. “You two are the best!” Caught off guard, Heero went to open his mouth and pull away, but Duo gave him a pleading look and he reconsidered his next move carefully. Sighing he realized that maybe, just this once, it wouldn’t hurt and he waited a few moments before slowly prying the young girl off them. “It’s time for sleep now Itel. Tomorrow will be here soon and we can start from there. A new beginning. No more Mr Griffiths and no more being locked in awful dark places.” Itel nodded silently as she lay back down. She had decided already that she wanted to be with them, she had known them long enough now from the one off outings they’d had before they’d told her that they were thinking of adopting her and she surely wasn’t going to make Heero kiss her goodnight if he didn’t want to. She had understood the basics of the story they had told and at least the dark-haired man had been honest with her. Something she had missed since her parents had died. “Night Itel.” Duo replied softly stroking the hair away from her eyes as he and Heero got up from the floor by her bedside. "Sleep well." “Night Duo.” Itel yawned as she closed her eyes snuggling into the pillow and hugging Chester close to her heart. "Night Heero." "Goodnight Itel." Heero responded quietly as he turned and hurried from the room. Duo watched him go. He swore that he could almost feel the conflict running about in Heero's mind and began to wonder if maybe he’d been hanging around Quatre for too long. He turned the girl's light out and followed after his lover. Heero headed straight for their room and sat himself on the edge of the bed. His face displayed a serious look upon it. A father was_not something he had ever thought that he would become and from Gundam pilot to father in five easy steps hadn’t been written yet, nor he supposed would it ever be. He glanced up as Duo rounded the corner closing the bedroom door behind him. “Go on say it!” Heero dared the ex-Shinigami as he avoided his gaze. “Say what?” Duo asked his lover softly as he sat next to him. “That I should have kissed her, that I was selfish, etcetera, etcetera.” Duo wrapped an arm around his husband's shoulder and grinned at him. “Don’t have too, you just said it yourself.” The braided one said with a wink. Heero lay back on the bed and placed his hands behind his head. “I wanted to Duo but I don’t want to get too close just yet. Six months is still a long way to go from here until we can actually adopt her. I just don’t think we should get our hopes up too soon.” Duo smiled a knowing look on his face. “You mean you don’t want to get close to her until you know for sure that she’s ours.” Heero continued to avoid his lover’s gaze. He hated it when Duo read right through him like a book. A hand whipped around Heero’s waist and before he knew it, Duo’s head was resting on his chest. “You really care about her, don’t you Heero?” Silence. “That’s what that whole feeling thing back there was about wasn’t it?” More silence “I thought so!” The braided baka snuggled closer to his husband's neck and rested his head just underneath. “You are so full of pent up emotions and feelings underneath that hardened exterior Heero Maxwell-Yuy, that you’re starting to avoid them again and you should know that trying to hide them from me doesn’t work anymore!” “I refuse to get close to the child because she will become too familiar with everything; and she will not grow up to reach her fullest potential if she is spoiled with emotion!” “HAH!” Duo laughed sarcastically, sitting upright “Talk about the biggest load of bullshit I have_ever heard.” “Assume what you will Duo.” Heero replied with out the slightest inclination of backing down. “I will!” Duo back answered with a smile. “And you know I’m right, or you wouldn’t be so touchy about this.” He kissed the other boy softly on the neck. Heero turned away, rolling onto his side. “I don’t wish to discuss this topic any further Duo!” he said firmly. “This conversation is now over.” Duo backed off, but despite Heero’s refusal to admit it, Duo already knew his companion was attached to the girl. “Alright koi.” The braided baka began. “I’ll leave you alone so you can figure things out.” He started to get up, but was prevented from leaving the bed as Heero grabbed him gently by the hand. “No! The ex-02 pilot kissed the other boy on the forehead. “Everything about you is a good thing Heero. You can’t fool me any more because I know that underneath that hard exterior of yours is a heart of pure gold!” “I do love you Duo.” The dark-haired boy blurted out, holding the other boy tightly in his arms. “I know!” Duo confirmed. “And I’ve told you, It’s in the things you do when you can’t say it Heero.
