Sunset Over The Horizon

Sunset over the Horizon 10/?

Une sat in her office reading over the reports given to her regarding the kidnapping incident of her chief medical officer, and a list of those who were on duty and responsible for the unacceptable display of security negligence, lay on the desk to the left of her. She had read through the reports several times and everything seemed to be in order with them, however, after reading through the security personnel list something didn't seem quite right. Shifting in her seat to the other half of her desk, she brought up the Preventer payroll and clicked on the staff summary; the printer hummed into life, then promptly clicked, whirred and refused to work.

“Don't start with me, you useless excuse for a printer,” she growled at it. “With the mood I'm in you'll end up out the window and five floors down as minute fragments scattered about in all directions in an approximate radius of two to three meters.” She folded her arms glaring at the evil thing, then gave it a solid thump on the top and the light on the printer blinked. “Maybe more if I throw you hard enough,” she threatened.

'Click, whirr, click, chic, chic, chic'

“That's more like it,” she grinned triumphantly as the pages began to emerge one after the other.

Fifteen minutes and fourteen pages later, Une walked over to the power point, reached down, switched it off and then pulled the plug. The printer chugged, its light blinked, then... silence. “One all, I believe.” Une grinned smugly as she dropped the plug to the floor and then headed back towards the printer. Removing the printouts from it she sat back at her desk and stared at the workload in front of her. It was going to take a good couple of hours to get through this lot and she had vowed not to leave the office until she had finished.

Even though her shift finished at eleven, there was no way she would make it home before midnight with this lot, that was for sure. Taking a deep breath she sighed and began the daunting task of wading through the vast amount of personnel on the printed payroll list. At least having the late shift this week meant that she could sleep in until at least eleven thirty a.m. That would give her enough time to shower, dress, eat, etcetera, before heading to work around two p.m. "Actually..." she began, talking to no one in particular, "...food sounds like a good idea right now," she finished as she got out of her chair and headed for her office door.

The cafeteria at Preventer HQ was open until ten p.m, and considering that all evening meals were supplied free to Preventer personnel on night shift, she wasn't about to knock back the quiche and salad, or the BLT, of course it would all depend on what she felt like for dinner tomorrow night. She bit down gently on the inside of her bottom lip as her stomach, at the thought of food, decided to strike up the familiar chorus of gurgling at will. She glanced at the small desk clock in front of her; it was already a quarter after nine.

Glancing briefly back at the paper work on her desk, she shut and locked the door behind her.

It would still be there when she returned.

Heero unlocked the door of their home and the two Preventer agents quietly walked inside shutting and locking the door behind them. Duo was the first to spot the homely little sight as they walked into the lounge and he nudged Heero, encouraging him to look in the direction in which he was pointing. There on the couch sat Hilde, reading, with Relena asleep, head resting in her lap and Itel asleep in Relena's arms.

Not even Heero could avoid the smile that formed across his face.

Hilde looked up from the book she had been reading as the two young men entered the lounge. “How'd it go? Is Sally okay?”

Heero nodded. “All I am able to say is that she is alive and that Wu Fei is with her. Anything else at this point in time would be a breech of Preventer ethics.”

“Yeah, and besides, we still don't know the full story ourselves,” Duo added. “She needed to get some more rest so she's asked us to head back there tomorrow.”

“I'm just glad she's alive.”

“I think we all are; especially Wuffers,” Duo sighed. “Man... I have never seen him like this before, well the way saw him tonight. All I can say is remind me never to get on his bad side. I feel for the wall in Sal’s room.”

Hilde raised an eyebrow questioningly.

“Don't ask," Duo replied promptly. “It's probably safer that way.”

“Ahh... like that was it?”

“Very much so. Let's just say he was not a very happy camper.”

“Understood,” the German girl replied, “But I guess I wouldn't be either if some jerk kidnapped someone that I cared for.” She found herself glancing down at Relena and smiled. “I'd want to do some pretty nasty things to them if I ever got a hold of them, so I can imagine Wu Fei's train of thought right now.”

“Hehe, at least a wall is fixable,” Duo chuckled. “Dunno about the assholes though once Wuff Wuff gets a hold of them.”

Heero walked forward, a little closer to Duo, the tone in his voice firm and authoritative “I think that’s enough now, Duo. It’s getting pretty late and we should let the girls head home.”

Hilde gave Heero an understanding smile. “Yes, you’re quite right, Heero. I need to get the Vice minister home, she has another engagement tomorrow morning.”

“Who’s getting engaged?” yawned a sleepy voice drifting up from Hilde’s lap.

“Not, engagement as in getting married engagement, Rels; a meeting kind of engagement,” Duo smirked. “You have one of those in the morning.” His next movement was a swift, sweeping motion of his arms, grabbing Itel off Relena’s lap as the dazed Vice minister sat upright

“Is it that time already? I need to get dressed.”

“Do you even know where you are?” Duo snickered, adjusting the position of Itel’s body to a more comfortable one.

“Of course I know where I am…” she retorted indignantly. “Wynona, my wardrobe please…”

Hilde blinked and glanced at Heero.

Heero blinked, returning her glance.

Duo laughed, quite amused by the whole thing. “Hild’ you’d better get this girl home and into her bed before she starts imagining us as her hand maids and demands milk and cookies to go.”

“Good idea, Duo.”

Heero gently took Itel from Duo. “I’ll take her to her room, you give Hilde a hand to get Relena into the car. I’ll be out to say goodnight as soon as I’m done.” Heading for Itel's room, Heero left the other two to deal with the overly tired Vice minister.

Heero slowly and gently placed Itel into her bed, pulling the covers over her so that her arms were resting on the surface of the bedspread. A tiny yawn escaped the young girl's lips and her eyes slowly opened as she was tucked into her bed. “Heero?”

Heero glanced down at the young girl. “Gomen ne, Itel. My intention was not to wake you.”

The dark haired girl yawned again. “I was kinda awakish anyhows. So, is Dr. Sally okay?” she asked. Heero had informed her earlier as to why they had to head out; not in detail, just enough to satisfy her curiosity.

“She’s doing just fine, Itel. Duo and I have to head over to see her again tomorrow. Trowa and Quatre have offered to have you over to play with Sebastian while we finish talking with Dr. Sally.”

“Cool, Sebastian’s fun to play with, coz he gots ride on stuff and Quatre gives me horsey rides and Trowa makes me cookies and Rashid… well he’s good for shoulder rides coz, he’s so tall.”

“Yes, he is, isn’t he.”

“Hai, totemo.” Itel yawned again. “Ne….”

“Nanda, Itel chan?”

“Kesa ga nitsuite; arigatou, Hee-chan.”

“Hee -chan…? ” Heero gave her a slight glare, “Boku no namae wa Hiiro Yuy desu…boku wa Hee-chan jyanai.”

“Demo…. Hee-chan kawaii namae. Totemo kawaii dayou,” she giggled as Heero raised an eyebrow at her.

“O… ya… su… mi… He replied drawing the word out as he turned her night-light down to a dull glow.

Itel giggled more and snuggled down under her covers, her head peeking out over the edge of the blankets. “Hai. Oyasumi.... Hee-chan.” She snuggled Chester into her arms and rolled onto her side, watching as Heero headed for the door

“Oh and one more thing, Itel,” Heero began as he stopped in the doorway without turning around. “In regards to your reference to this morning. It was my pleasure and I’d do it again if I had to.”

Itel lay silently stunned as Heero continued out of the room.

TBC...

Translations for Heero and Itel's conversation

Hai:: Yes/yeah

Totemo:: very

Nanda:: another form of nan desuka meaning what is it?

Ne:: is used in the same way as a question mark it's like asking... for example, saying 'Ne, Heero? Soto ni kimasenka' Which means Hey, Heero would you like to come outside, soto ni being 'outside' and kimasenka being 'would you like to come'. 'Ni' in this case is used as the marker for destination 'Soto ni' Here, the destination, being outside

Kesa ga:: this morning. Ga is used to mark the fact that 'this morning' is the subject

Nitsuite:: about (as in:: about this morning)

Arigatou:: Thankyou

Chan:: Usually used for young girls and used mainly for close friends and in family situations, like nee chan for older sister, occasionally chan is used for a male if they have been friends with some one for a long time. Kun (sounds like coon) is the usual term when addressing a young male. Chan has also been translated in some Anime as affectionately calling some one little or small.

Boku no namae wa Hiiro Yuy desu:: Boku is usually used by males to identify themselves. Boku no namae wa, is literally my name is, wa signifies the topic in this case Heero is speaking about his own name so therefore the topic is his name and, no, is in this instance 'my' signifying possessive as in something belongs to some one and 'desu' is to signify the end of the sentence, something similar to a full stop.

Boku wa Hee-chan jyanai: Jyanai signifies negative, in this case Heero is saying his name is not Hee-chan.

Demo:: But.

Hee-chan kawaii namae. Kawaii literally means cute. So here Itel was telling Heero that Hee-chan is a cute name

Totemo kawaii dayou:: Here Itel is just reinforcing the fact that she thinks Hee-chan is a cute name by saying it's very cute. Dayou is another form of desu and it means the same, the end of a sentence, except there is a stronger emphasis on the sentence. It would be like adding an exclamation mark.

Oyasumi::: The shortened form of Oyasuminasai it literally means goodnight. Oyasumi is usually used more amongst close friends and family. It is said before going to bed and when leaving the places of others late in the evening. Oyasuminasai is the more polite of the two and as with all polite forms is more appropriately used when saying goodnight to those who are in positions of respect.
