Chapter 7

Blows you out of the water? I think it would have me, too, except that I was so stupefied by him showing up at all I wouldn’t have noticed even if he had told me. Told me right away, I mean. Not that that would have been something he’d share, like I said. I talked with Joy after things settled down a bit, and that’s when she shared the story with me.

Well, she seems to be quite a woman. Asked to be assigned to Heero’s team as support personnel when she heard he was selected for the Phobos Alpha mission, then found out he wouldn’t be heading a team. But she didn’t give up. She sought him out and somehow convinced him that she was dependable, competent, and definitely not a groupie or looking for perks or —

Yeah, I know. That’s one of the reasons Heero took off for Mars, I think. I’m sure we’ll be getting into all that sort of stuff as he’s willing to share it.

I do, Quatre, I really do. I don’t know much about Heero, when it comes down to it. Yes, we fought on the same side, and yes, I was, um, let’s say “enamored” with him, but it’s not like we spent night after night in deep talk revealing ourselves to each other. Who did?

Well, okay, you and Trowa had that one night at the Maganac base, but Heero and I sure didn’t get that luxury. The only conversation we really had was trading barbs during what little time there was to catch our breath between missions. And of course, once the war was over and we were able to think about what a normal life might look like, he took off.

No, I wasn’t disappointed — at least not in the way you mean. He didn’t leave me, Quatre. There has to be a relationship before you can walk away from one. I wanted there to be one, of course, but… Anyway, what I was trying to say is that even though I don’t have a long history with Heero, I do know him well enough to say he’s changed.

Um, let’s see. I guess I’d say he’s more open, more expressive. He’s smiled more since he got back than in all the time I knew him before. And I’ll tell you something else: He’s happy.
