Chapter 5

Thanks for coming, Quatre. We don’t have a lot of time, but I’m glad to share some of the story before we have to leave.

True, true. Me from a month ago would’ve never believed what’s happened since. But me today is sure glad it has. Okay, then. Let me catch you up on the parts you haven’t heard from Trowa.

So yeah, he was sitting at dinner and reviewing reports (what else would Heero Yuy do during his off-duty hours?). The display in the cafeteria was a split screen showing Phobos mission data plus an Earth Sphere newsfeed. The ESN channel happened to be set to NewsCheck, and it happened that the Fine Arts Today report came on during mealtime, and it happened to be the episode featuring me, and—

Yes, a lot of “happened thats,” but so? Not every little chain of events has to be thick with significance and hidden meaning.

How? Oh, right. Of course you’d assume that’s something Heero would never share. Well, I’ve been in contact with his right hand on the Phobos mission, a woman named Joy Parillo—tell you more about her later. She was eating with him when the report came on. She drew his attention to it because she thought he might be interested in hearing what one of his old Gundam comrades was up to. She said when he saw me on the screen, he came to a full stop. As in he froze with his sandwich halfway to his mouth, then let it slip from his hand.

I don’t know, Quatre. That’s a detail she remembers. Don’t forget that’s completely out of character for the always-in-control, there’s-nothing-but-the-mission mister Yuy, so it’s not really surprising she’d find it remarkable. So she watched the report, which was you and Trowa showing off the models of Sandrock and Heavyarms I made for you, then turned to ask Heero a question.

And he was gone.
