"Everywhere I Look "

“What’s wrong?” Chang Wufei said. “You know thischannel is only for —”

“He wants to talk to you,” Sally Po said to her husband.

After a moment of silence, Wufei said “Oh. So —”

“And there’s something else.”

Wufei’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“I don’t know, exactly,” Sally said. “Something I can’t put my finger on. I laid out the facts just the way you told me to. He’s every bit as sharp as you said, Wufei. When I told him you’re the Preventer in charge of the investigation, he immediately changed.”

“How?”

“He took charge of the conversation. He asked for a laptop and Grid access. It wasn’t quite like he was giving me orders, but he was all business.”

“On a mission.”

“Exactly.”

“So what seemed odd to you?”

“He asked if I could let you know he wanted to talk. I told him that would be harder than getting him a laptop, but he pushed. He assumed I had a way of reaching you in case of emergency and asked me to use it.”

That’s Heero all over.

“Then he asked me to tell you that if you wanted his help, he was willing to discuss it.”

“Then what was odd?” Wufei said.

“What he said exactly was, ‘If Wufei decides he wants me on his team, then’ — and then he looked away without finishing his sentence. Just stared at the wall.”

Wufei said nothing as he considered this.

“When I said, ‘Yes?’ to prompt him to continue, he apologized and said, ‘Just tell Wufei I’m interested in helping.’ He didn’t look at me. And his voice was quiet, almost meek.”

After a pause, Wufei said, “I understand. Tell him I’ll be in touch.”

“You think you know what’s going on in the back of his mind?”

“Maybe,” Wufei said.

Sally knew not to push her husband. It wasn’t his way to speculate. Once he’s certain, he’ll tell me in his own good time. If he tells me at all.
