"Everywhere I Look "

Chapter 16

Sally Po turned a thoughtful gaze on her patient. "When I can discharge you depends on--"

"On what?" Heero said.

"We're slowly adjusting the mix of gases you're breathing, adding more oxygen every few hours and monitoring the result."

"Which explains why you're drawing blood so often."

"That's right. So far, things are progressing well. If we don't hit a snag, then it's possible you could be released as early as Friday."

"And what day is it now?"

Po blinked. Of course. He's been unconscious long enough to be uncertain. "It's Wednesday."

Heero sighed slowly. He looked away in thought. After a moment he turned to his doctor and said firmly, "I need you to do a few things for me."

He doesn't waste time, does he?

When Po said nothing, he continued. "I need a laptop and unrestricted access to the Grid. Not a loner; I'll wipe it and set up an account with my own security. Is that possible?" Po hesitated. Before she could speak, Heero added, "I can pay for it, but not before I have it. As soon as I configure it I can transfer funds to whoever --"

"I think I can arrange for that, but it'll take at least a day."

Heero nodded curtly, just once. His eyes unfocused as he looked over Po's shoulder.

"Anything else?"

Heero looked back at his doctor. He opened his mouth and drew breath, then closed it and exhaled through his nose. "There is. Can you let your husband know I need a word with him?"

"That may be more difficult than getting a computer for you. I don't know where he is."

"Surely you have a way of contacting him in case of emergency."

"Well," Po said hesitantly, "I do, but it's not a channel I should open casually. If I --"

"Just get word to him that I understand what he wants. If he decides he wants me on his team, then --" Heero looked away.

"Yes?" Po said when Heero left his sentence unfinished.

"I'm sorry," Heero said, his voice suddenly soft and mild. "Tell Wufei I'm interested in helping."

Po regarded her patient for a long moment, then stood. "I understand." She turned to leave, but stopped when Heero spoke again.

"Dr. Po? Thank you for being honest with me."

As his physician left his room Heero reached out to touch the oxygen tent surrounding him. Now I have two missions: finding Duo and helping Wufei solve this case.
