"Everywhere I Look " Chapter 14 Heero's doctor looked intently at him as she spoke in a steady, calm voice. "The military is not a monolithic organization -- I'm sure you know this. Even though you prevented Zechs Merquise from dropping what would've amounted to --" "I know what happened, Dr. Po," Heero said gently. "I was there." "Of course. I didn't meant to --" "Oz and Romefeller were defeated," Heero said, "but there are still plenty of sympathizers in the ranks, and some of them hold significant positions of responsibility. I understand that." Po nodded. "Then I'm sure you know that some of the old guard are more than grumblers; they think about ways to restore the old order, and a few spend their time doing more than just thinking about it. That's the main reason Relena Peacecraft fought to establish the Preventers organization after the dust settled at the end of the war and the new government was established." Heero shifted against the pillows supporting him. Unable to find a comfortable position, he scooted his butt backward and leaned forward to sit up straight. He looked back at his doctor, grimacing at his frustration with the plastic oxygen tent that distorted his view of her. "Tell me who thinned the air aboard Phobos Alpha, Dr. Po." Just like Wufei told me: all business, no nonsense. And incredibly sharp."We don't know for certain, but there is some evidence the idea may have come from a group outside the military that has connections with top-tier personnel on the Phobos Planning Committee." Heero narrowed his eyes. "What would their motivation be?" "We're looking into that." Silence. Heero looked away, frowning in deep concentration. Po waited as her patient processed what she had told him. A non-military group. What would they have to gain? Thinning the air makes no sense. There aren't any benefits I can see. And it would be detrimental to anyone looking to return to Earth. What possible advantage-- Heero turned to his doctor. "You keep saying 'we.'" Po gave her patient an appraising look. "You know my husband, Chang Wufei, from the war. He's a Preventer now, and he's heading the investigation into the matter. He doesn't share his work with me -- it's classified, of course -- but when he heard that you were on Earth and required medical attention, he arranged --" "I'm at this hospital and you're my doctor because --" "Your analytic mind and intuition are something he thought might benefit the case. And," Po said, "your quick grasp of the facts and sharp insight are everything he said it was, Heero." Heero allowed a tiny smile to form. "He's still trying to persuade me to join the Preventers, even after all this time." Po smiled back. Heero continued. "I suppose Commander Une knows nothing of this." "That's not information I'm privy to." "So," Heero said, his voice suddenly tight, "how long until I can get out of here?" ~ * ~ |
