"Finders Keepers" Chapter 1 "Ice cream?" Heero Yuy raised an eyebrow as he asked his lover. Over Duo Maxwell's shoulder, the sights and sounds of the county fair spilled into the early evening air. "Yeah, Heero, that sounds delicious!" Duo bounced up and down like an eight-year old, delighted by the constant flux of lights and people swirling round him. "Thanks for takin' me to the fair, Heero. This has been the best day ever!" He impulsively leaned over and kissed Heero on the cheek. "Just sit on this bench and wait for me, Duo. I'll be right back." Heero walked in the direction of the food vendors, leaving Duo smiling as he watched the young children jostling each other in line for the Ferris wheel. "Make mine chocolate!" Duo yelled as Heero disappeared into the crowd. * * * "That'll be six-fifty," the lady behind the counter said. She was overweight, overworked, and overly tired. Trails of assorted flavors of ice cream stained the front of her apron. "Thanks," Heero said. "Your shift over soon?" "Don't I wish!" the lady exclaimed. "It's just me and my husband here, every day from open till close." "Hope you're turning a profit," Heero said with a smile. "Th-thanks," the lady said, not sure how to react to a sympathetic customer. Heero turned around and headed for the Ferris wheel. * * * "This /has/ been a perfect day," Heero thought. "Good weather, no assignments, and my lover boy on my arm, all day long." Heero felt warm inside,. He knew that Duo had needed a day away from university studies just as much as he did, and it felt good to know that he had been able to take Duo's mind off of his full schedule and part-time job. * * * "I love watching children," Duo thought. "They're always so free with their feelings. When is it that we learn to hide our emotions?" "Perhaps that happens when we first are hurt." Duo looked up to see a tall man in a blood-red cloak. Shadows crossed his face, but Duo could see an intensity in his eyes that was mesmerizing. "Excuse me?" Duo said, unable to look away. "When we learn to hide from ourselves," the man said. His voice was rich, deep, and edgy. Duo's quizzical _expression prompted the man to continue. "You were wondering about the children. They /do/ seem so free, so innocent at this age, don't you agree?" Not waiting for Duo's reply, the man continued. "I think they start to fear their emotions when they first are hurt, maybe by a friend, perhaps by a family member. It doesn't take much, does it, before we're afraid to be honest with ourselves. Not long at all." The man spoke almost wistfully, as though remembering something long buried in his past. "Exactly who are you?" "Call me Max for now, Duo." A feral smile midst shadows revealed the gleam of a gold tooth. "How do you know my name?" "If you want to enjoy your ice cream," the man said, pointing over Duo's shoulder, "catch him before he falls." "What?" Duo turned around and saw Heero headed his way. As Heero held out Duo's chocolate cone with a smile, a young girl pushing her baby brother in a stroller turned in front of him. "Oof!" Heero stopped suddenly to avoid crashing
into the girl. When he tried to regain his balance he overcompensated,
and began falling backward. Duo was up and to him in a flash, his
arms around Heero's "Careful, Heero!" The look of surprise on Heero's face matched the one on Duo's. "Great reaction time, love. You saved the ice cream."
Duo stood holding Heero at an angle, the boy's weight all on his heels.
His mouth was open, his eyes wide. "You gonna let me up? As much
as I like being in your "Sure, sure, sorry, Heero." Duo pulled his lover into a standing position and then let go of his waist. "You okay?" Heero caught the spacey look in his boyfriend's eyes. "Uh...yeah, I'm fine. It's just -" "Just what?" "I dunno, just - forget it. It's nothing." Heero raised one eyebrow. He decided to drop the idea of pursuing whatever was bothering Duo. "Eat quick, or it'll melt all over you." "And I bet you'd just love cleaning it all up, wouldn't you, lover?" Duo said with a smirk as he took the chocolate cone. Heero responded by swatting Duo playfully on the butt. "Let's head toward the main tent. I hear there's a sword swallower who's supposed to perform at the top of the hour." "Yeah, Heero, that sounds good. Let's go." As they walked hand in hand, Duo glanced over his shoulder. The Ferris wheel was silhouetted against a beautiful multi-colored sunset. The man in the red cloak was nowhere to be seen. TBC
