Author’s note: This fic is a rewritten version of a fic I once wrote, called Nobody’s perfect. Some might recognize it. I’ve added parts of both Duo and Heero’s past, Duo about his life on the street, Heero about his harsh training with Doctor J. The original story, the one in their present lives, basically stayed the same. I’ve also added a prologue and epilogue. I have indicated AU on Duo’s behalf, especially concerning his past. No Maxwell church, no sister Helen, no Sweepers on his fourteen years old. He did meet Solo. But I’m gonna stop rambling now before I give everything away. Don’t let the het scare you away, I promise some good boys on boys action ahead ^_~ Well, enjoy! Reviews would be nice.

Destination Eden

Chapter 9

An annoying snoring tore through her sleep. Annoying? More like horrible! With a grunt she turned around, and she felt Heero awake as well. She looked up and noticed his eyes were open. They were staring at the ceiling. “Heero? You can’t sleep either?” she asked.

He looked aside and gifted her a smile. “No,” he said.

“Wait, don’t tell me. Snoring?” She poked Duo in his back, resulting in louder snoring.

He laughed as she moaned miserably. “Not only the snoring.”

“Oh no? What else?” she said surprised.

“I’m worried.”

“About what?”

Heero sighed. “No one can know about this.”

“Why not?” Heidi asked. “Are you afraid of what people might say?”

“No, I don’t care what people will say,” he said. “But I’m afraid of what Doctor J will do. He’ll never agree with this.”

“What? Why not?” she asked confused.

“I’m not supposed to feel, remember? I’m the Perfect Soldier, his Perfect Soldier that he created.”

“Oh yeah, Duo told me about that.”

“We have to make sure no one will ever know about this, that Duo and I love each other.”

“Do you mean we have to stop? But you love him, and he loves you, and, to be perfectly honest with you, I kinda love you as well. So are you saying that…”

“I’m not saying that we must stop this. We just have to keep it secret. Maybe we could tell Quatre, Trowa and Wufei, but nobody else. They’re our friends, we can trust them. If we really want to, then we can go through with this.”

“But at work, we can still…”

“What? A quickie every now and then?” he laughed. “No, that’s quite impossible. He’s keeping a constant eye on me, he works there too, you know. Not so much because he has to, he could easily have his office at home. Just to reprimand me in case I do something wrong in his eyes.”

“Are you serious about that?” Heidi asked unbelievingly. “That’s just insane.”

“Tell me about it. It’s a miracle he's even allowed me to live on my own. You see now why I’m worrying?” He paused for a moment to softly give her a reassuring caress along her cheek, but then cast his eyes down again. “And then there’s another thing that will make it hard,” he sighed.

“What?”

“If I have to go on missions again. I can understand why Doctor J has trained me this way. If I let my feelings show, I can no longer kill without regretting it afterwards, I guess. Just like Quatre, back in the war, he cried almost every time he had to kill someone, always murmured some kind of apology. It will be just the same and I don’t know if I’ll be able to deal with that. Actually, Quatre is a lot stronger than I thought, if you think about it. Somehow he always managed to turn that sweet heart of his into a stone and get himself over it. But I’m afraid that my heart can only be one or the other, not both of them.”

“Heero, of course you can,” she consoled him. “You think too little of yourself. All you have to do is find a happy medium. Your life consists of more than just missions. It’s good to be so diligent concerning your work, but above all, Heero, you must not forget to live. Besides, I thought the war was over. If you ask me, the killing is done. When you go after the bad guys now, you’ll still have to shoot them, but not with the purpose of killing them, but of stopping them from running.”

He looked up into her convincing eyes and heaved a long sigh, uncertain what to do, how to feel, if he *could* feel, if he even *should* be considering her words.

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” he said finally. He went back to lying down again and stared at the ceiling. “Heidi?” he said after a while.

Heidi chased the sleepy clouds that were trying to find her head again away and dragged her eyes open. “What?” she asked.

“What do you think about homosexuals?”

She kissed him briefly on his cheek and laughed. “What kind of stupid question is that, silly?” she joked. “I think they’re okay, otherwise I never would’ve tried to couple the two of you. Everyone has the right to love whomever he wishes. Why do you ask that?”

“Just because,” Heero said, shrugging. “Sometimes I see you looking at Quatre and Trowa, and then you laugh at them. If you say you think homosexuals are okay, then why are you laughing at them? That makes me feel like you coupled us, only because you find the idea of two guys exciting and because you just wanted to look at us.”

Heidi sighed and shook her head in amusement. “You really are a silly guy,” she said softly. “Of course I find the idea of two guys exciting, but when I laugh at Trowa and Quatre, it’s not to make fun of them, but just because it’s so funny how those two can act. The little quarrels they sometimes have, the way Quatre reacts to it. Sometimes he can make such a big deal out of futilities. And that’s what makes me laugh, Heero, not the fact that I think it’s ridiculous they’re together. If I were find it so ridiculous, then I wouldn’t be lying here, would I?”

Heero looked at her with big eyes. He hadn’t considered it like that before. “Yeah, I get it,” he smiled. “I just thought it was a fantasy of yours, and after this you would pretend nothing had happened.”

“Something did happen. From this moment on, you two are together, Heero and Duo. And let people look at you, let them talk. There’s nothing wrong with what you do. You won’t end up in hell, you didn’t invent Aids, you’re no garbage in God’s eyes. You just love each other. And hear what I’m saying, Heero Yuy, you two are gonna be happy, and no society, not even Doctor J will prevent you from enjoying that.”

“You don’t know what Doctor J’s capable of.”

“Stop it, Heero. We’re going through with this,” she whispered. “Now, go to sleep.”

~*~*~*

When he woke up next morning, Heidi was still asleep. Duo wasn’t there anymore. Still quite drowsy, he got up, slipped into a robe and sauntered over to the bathroom. A nice shower would be welcome right now. There came no answer when he knocked on the door, so he pushed it open and walked inside. Dear God, say it isn’t so. Duo, stark naked, standing under the shower. The boy was putting up one hell of a fight to get his hair washed, probably the reason why he hadn’t heard him knocking. He couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of it. Making faces, getting shampoo in his eyes, making more faces, but not cursing his beautiful, beautiful hair.

Duo’s arms started to hurt. His hair was holy to him, he cherished it. But washing the whole lot, that took quite some time and patience from him. And patience was the one thing he didn’t have. Once he had spread the soap over the whole length of his chestnut strands, the easiest part was over. Massaging and rubbing the whole lot also wasn’t world’s most difficult task, but at the point of rinsing, troubles began. It seemed to take ages before all the shampoo was drained from his hair, and his fingers kept on catching in the tangles caused by the rubbing. Not to mention the conditioner that still followed.

“Need a little help with that?” he suddenly heard from the door. He jerked his head aside, his hands still stuck in his brown locks.

“Heero,” he said, pleasantly surprised. The thought “Come on in and join me,” flashed through his head for a moment, but he didn’t even need to actually say the words, coz to his utter delight, Heero had already stripped off his robe and had hopped into the shower with him. The feel of those slender, sensual fingers through his hair made him shiver, while they were gently freeing him from the redundant shampoo.

“Maybe you should cut it off,” Heero said, knowing perfectly well what reaction this would provoke.

“Are you out of your freakin’ mind?! I’ve treasured it for my whole goddamn life! What the hell are you thinking?!”

Heero chuckled. “You know, for someone who’s wearing a rosary, you do curse an awful lot.”

Duo pulled a dumb face and tilted his head a bit towards his friend. “Well… yeah… I’m not really all that Catholic, ya know. I’m only wearing it because I’m very attached to it. Solo took really good care of me. He gave that rosary to me, you know. He always managed to cheer us up. You know, one time, he got his hands on a picture of one of our customers. He pinned it on the wall so we could draw pictures on it and…”

“Duo,” Heero interrupted him.

“Yeah?”

“Who’s Solo?”

“Solo was the oldest of our little group. He was very sweet to us and made sure the little ones never had to go out on the streets and…”

“Little ones?” Heero interrupted again, covering Duo’s hair with conditioner.

“Yes, little ones,” Duo resumed his story. “The youngest of us were seven and eight years old. Well, he flatly refused to send them out on the streets, and I agree with him on that. Just imagine, such a little kid and then one of those burly guys who…” His breath hitched and he shivered. Trembling hands went to his eyes and his heavy hair fell across his face.

“Duo,” Heero said softly. He turned him around and let his boyfriend cry against his shoulder. “Stop thinking about it now. That’s all over. You’re here with me now.” He spoke very gently, as if his words were made out of glass and they would break if he spoke too hard.

“It was a good thing I met Solo. He was the one who pulled me into that building, he was the one who gave me shelter and looked after me. I never should’ve left him there, he should’ve come with me,” he said when his sobs had faded away.

“Duo, Quatre has founded homes for them. I’m sure he’ll like it there.”

“He deserves better.”

Heero kissed his forehead. “Did you love him?”

Tiny smile. “I think I did. He was a bit like you sometimes.”

“Like me?”

“Yes. He could be very stubborn, but also very considerate. And he was really beautiful,” he added with a cheeky grin.

“Really now?” Heero smiled.

“I’m sorry for all the things I’ve done to you, Heero. All the flirting, I mean,” he explained as he saw the frown on Heero’s face. “I must’ve hurt you a lot back then. But I just wanted to be close to you, I loved you. I’m really sorry, Heero.”

“Apology accepted,” Heero said softly. “But we have a lot of catching up to do.”

Duo smiled and turned around again. He waited patiently, as patiently as possible, until Heero had worked all of the conditioner through. In the mean time his eyes had made a game of trying to find images in the patterns the water drops had made on the shower screen. He had done that a few times before, to just try and recognize stuff in something. Once, he had found an angel amidst the stains on the window of a bus. Or he had seen an airplane shooting out of a cloud in the *sky*.

“Duo, I’m done,” a soft voice said behind him. Darn. Just when he had found a dragon with five heads and eight legs. No, nine.

“Thank you, love,” Duo smiled at him, turning around. “Now we still have to wait until it has soaked its way through.”

“Any suggestions of what we could do?” Heero asked, frowning playfully.

“Ehm… Well, you did say just now that we still had a lot of catching up to do, ne?”

A soft “Hn” was all he got, and the unpleasant feeling that Heero would return to his apathetic carcass now he had got laid by him, stole over him. Imagine his surprise when he suddenly felt his arms around him.

“I love you,” Heero said.

Duo still had to get used to it. Heero, the callous brute he once was, loved him. Three simple words, but when they came from him, he couldn’t help but find them surreal.

Wonder if he has ever said that to Relena, Duo thought.

“Turn around,” Heero murmured, biting Duo’s earlobe. His tone had been low and made Duo shudder.

“Hee-chan…” he breathed.

“You will get your ‘catching up’,” Heero grinned, while he let his hand glide agonizingly slowly along Duo's chest, making it stop for a moment to play with a nipple. The grin on his face broadened as he heard Duo’s breathing becoming heavier and quicker. His hand moved on, but just past his navel, he moved up again to the other nipple, eliciting a little moan of protest.

“Hee-chan, please,” Duo whimpered.

Taking pity on his lover, he slid his hand down and met the clear evidence of the passion glowing inside of him. A first teasing caress along his member, and he at once felt Duo’s head in the crook of his neck. A second caress gave Duo the feeling that his legs no longer contained bones, only blood. Heero almost had to carry Duo's entire weight when he started massaging the sensitive tip. It only took a swift movement at the back of his knees to let him sink to the floor. Slowly and still teasing, scarcely touching Duo when he stalked past him, he knelt in front of the still panting boy who was leaning against the wall, supported by both his hands, then moved so as he was sitting back on his heels.

When Duo was being pressed against the wall by Heero their eyes locked together for a moment, the cobalt ones holding a certain promise. Duo's eyes rolled back with anticipation and desire and as Heero bent over to fulfill his promise, his common sense got lost in a mind-blowing delirium, leaving him with only moans, mewls and endless pleasure. His fingers, aching to get a hold of something, but only feeling the slippery floor of the shower stall, crept up to Heero’s head and clawed in his dark-brown hair. On top of that, searching fingers went on a quest between Duo’s buttocks, and when they had found what they were looking for, they dug inside, turning Duo’s moans into screams. It took all his willpower to clasp Heero’s head between his two hands and gently pull it, to let Heero know he was coming and had to stop. He needed release, but not this way. Not by far. To his despair however, Heero didn’t obey him. He didn’t pull back, so Duo grasped Heero's member and squeezed it. Sure enough, it had the desired effect like someone who had put his finger in a tub of boiling water. Heero started and jerked back, his gaze floating somewhere between anger and the realization that he in fact had deserved this.

“I’m sorry, Hee-chan. Did I hurt you?” Duo asked awkwardly. He felt uncomfortable, but also strangely excited when Heero straightened up, the look in his eyes changed.

“Would I ever hurt you, Duo?” he practically growled. Before Duo got the chance to give any kind of response to that, Heero had spun him around and slammed him against the wall.

“You like it hard?” he said.

No, he didn’t like it hard. Not again, not like the old days. He liked it gentle, like last night. But he knew it wouldn’t always be gentle. Sometimes Heero would like it hard, and he knew that as time passed, sometimes he himself would like it hard too. He was a big boy now. He was no longer 12 years old. He was afraid of that pain, but he could handle it.

“Go ahead,” he whispered.

Heero knew he was being selfish here. It would hurt if he were to do it like this. But pain wouldn’t be everything. Duo’s love would overcome that pain. Besides, it would only be for a moment. He pressed his body against Duo’s and indicated with his foot that he needed to spread his legs.

Duo did so, and awaited Heero’s entry in almost painful suspense. And then, his vision flashed white for a split second, and everything around him disappeared. Everything, except his newborn lover, who was not only mentally, but most of all physically inside of him right now. It did hurt a bit, like he had expected, but it was a small price he had to pay for what he got in return. An overwhelming heat consumed him, making him want to scream out in pleasure, which he did as a natural reaction.

“Oh! Oh God! Hee-ro! Oooh Gooo-ood!” he panted. He didn’t know who to thank most, Heero for doing this to him, or Heidi allowing him to. Little mattered though for that moment, for slender, yet strong fingers sneaked around his manhood, and whatever was still left in his head scattered in splinters as a bittersweet liquid mingled with the drops of water on the wall.

Little by little, sigh by sigh, real life was seeping back into their heads. They panted together, leaning against each other.

“That was… that was…” Duo stammered.

“Amazing,” Heero finished for him.

“Yeah…”

“I’m sorry if I hurt you, Duo,” Heero said, wiping a few wet bangs out of Duo’s face. “It’s just that I… Well, I couldn’t wait…”

“It’s quite alright, lover,” Duo reassured him. “That’s just a part of it, ne? I like catching up with you. Now, I think that conditioner has worked its way through by now.” He turned his back to Heero and let him rinse the conditioner out.

Heero allowed the warm water to fall on Duo’s hair and worked his hands through the brown mass until it was clean.

“All done.”

“Thanks,” Duo smiled, worming the wet curtain in his hands to wring it.

They stepped from under the shower and put a towel around their hips. When Duo took the comb to tame the mess of hair, Heero took the comb from him.

“Allow me.”

“With pleasure,” Duo said. He went and stood in front of the mirror and looked amused by the reflection of Heero’s concentrating face. “Did you know I even placed a bet with one of the others?”

“A bet?” Heero asked without looking up.

“Yes. Benoît was his name. He didn’t like it that Solo gave me shelter and he said he would only treat me with respect if I came back with one hundred dollars. Fucking my way to the hundred, that’s not really something to be proud of, ne?”

“And did you win?”

“No. But I met Quatre. And that was equal to… Well, I don’t know what it’s equal to, but it has to be something huge. He didn’t do it either, you know. The most he could manage was seventy. Still, I always wondered how he did it.”

“And how did he do it? Did you ask him?”

“I did ask him. He said he’d tell me if I would suck him off.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Really. Duo, he said, the secret is in the moaning. While my mind says “Knock it the hell off”, my mouth says “Oh yeah, go on”. That’s what he said. Your moaning has to be so sensual they think they’re actually good, while in fact they don’t know shit. That way they’ll keep coming back and they pay you more money.”

“That’s what he said?”

“His exact words. I’ll never forget them. Well, from that moment on, money was pouring in. No, that’s a bit exaggerated maybe, but either way, it went a lot better. Aren’t you done yet? I’m hungry.”

“Almost, love,” Heero said, while in fact he wasn’t done at all. “You want me to boil you an egg?”

“That would be great. Thank you, honey.”

“Getting effeminate?”

Effeminate, Duo had heard the word effeminate. He was allergic to that word, and maybe he might’ve had long hair and have done it for years with guys, he was not, I repeat, not effeminate.

“Heidi, cut it out!” he roared. “I’m not effeminate and neither is Heero. Right, Heero?”

“No, queer, we’re not.”

“Heero, what… what are you saying?!”

They both looked at each other with a dumb face and snorted with laughter.

“Now then, I’d better go home now,” Heero said. “You take it from here?” He threw Heidi the comb and she handily caught it.

“Why not stay with us? It’s Sunday,” she yelled, working most of the knots out of Duo’s hair with her fingers.

“Eh… I've still got work to do,” the voice came from the bedroom.

“Heero, you’re a workaholic, you know that?” she scolded. “Relax a bit, will ya? Let’s do something fun, the three of us.”

“I… really can’t. I have to… feed my dog,” he mumbled.

Heidi’s eyes widened in delight. “A dog?!”

“Ow! Heidi!”

“Sorry, Duo. You have a dog?! What kind of dog? Is it a he or a she? What’s it's name? Tell me, tell me!” she rattled.

“Since when do you have a dog?” Duo asked, more skeptical then his hyperactive girlfriend.

Heero stepped back into the bathroom. His shoelaces were still undone, and he kneeled to tie them. “Oh, I’ve had lots of dogs. They were part of my training, still are in fact. And I don’t give them names. I give them numbers. The one I have now is number nine,” he said on a matter-of-course tone.

“What do you mean, they’re a part of your training?” Heidi asked, but Duo already felt it coming and was getting a little lightheaded.

“Heidi, I don’t think you want to know this,” he said, softly pulling at her arm. However, Heero straightened and continued speaking. Duo’s stomach contorted at the thought of how she might react to this.

“I keep them as a pet. I feed them and give them a home, but I mustn’t become attached to them. And if I do, I have to shoot them.”

“What?” Heidi whispered incredulously, her voice quivering a bit. “You have to shoot them? Why on earth would you want to do that?”

“Well, if I can do it with dogs, I can do it with human beings as well. At least, that’s Doctor J’s theory. And I must say, it really bears its fruits.”

“Does that mean you’ve already killed eight dogs?”

“Yes, it does,” he said, nodding his head.

Duo deemed it safest, for his own and Heero’s safety, to take the comb from her before it could fly in Heero’s direction and he himself wouldn’t have any hair left. That girl could pull hard!

“You… you even talk about it like it’s a casual thing!” she yelled, getting into a fury. “Didn’t you ever think about it that…!”

“Don’t be angry with me! I didn’t know any better. Doctor J has always ordered me to do so. And if I refused to obey him, he punished me, and I can assure you, it wasn’t pleasant. I was six years old when it happened the first time. He tied me to a table, and then I got shock waves through my body which gave me the feeling that my limbs were being ripped out. In the end I just did it so as I never experience that kind of pain again. Don’t you think it hurt me? Don’t you think I cried? I had to kill my buddy, the only friend I had in the whole world. So don’t go telling me I didn’t care about those dogs. I did, but that’s exactly why I had to do it. So now I don’t anymore, that’s the best for the both of us.”

On his cheeks, drops were glistening. Hard to tell whether it were tears, or just water left behind from the shower. Anyway, her fury had blown over, and had made way for compassion.

“So that’s why,” he ended his explanation, “I have to go home now. I’ll see you tomorrow at work.” He waved them goodbye and sauntered through the door.

“Duo?” Heidi said softly, staring at the door as if she was trying to burn a hole through it with her eyes. “Should we be afraid now?”

“What for, honey?”

“That he might kill us?”

He gave a little snigger at her almost childish conclusion and put his arms around her. “Let him try to kill us.”

To be continued…
