Author’s note: This fic is a rewritten version of a fic I once wrote, called Nobody’s perfect. Some might recognize it. I’ve added parts of both Duo and Heero’s past, Duo about his life on the street, Heero about his harsh training with Doctor J. The original story, the one in their present lives, basically stayed the same. I’ve also added a prologue and epilogue. I have indicated AU on Duo’s behalf, especially concerning his past. No Maxwell church, no sister Helen, no Sweepers on his fourteen years old. He did meet Solo. But I’m gonna stop rambling now before I give everything away. Don’t let the het scare you away, I promise some good boys on boys action ahead ^_~ Well, enjoy! Reviews would be nice.

Destination Eden

Chapter 21

“I’m gonna take a shower,” he said, getting up and sauntering to the bathroom.

“Can I come with you?” Heidi asked.

On that he hesitated. Duo and Heidi together, that was safe, but Duo and Hilde together… He trusted him, but not her. If he were to leave them alone now, then she would surely try. He threw a swift glance to Duo. Duo’s eyes met his in a reassuring wink.

“Sure, why not,” he said curtly.

Heidi jumped out of the bed and dashed towards the bathroom, grabbing Heero’s hand while she flew past him and dragging him with her, leaving Duo and Hilde alone.

Duo squinted at the girl next to him and noticed a somewhat melancholic expression on her face.

“Hey, why so gloomy?” he smiled, softly pinching her cheek.

“Be honest with me here, Duo,” Hilde said quietly, her eyes lowered.

“What?”

“I’ve lost you, haven’t I?”

“Lost me? What makes you think that?” he laughed.

“Oh, come on now, Duo. I saw what happened just now. That wasn’t just fucking, like Heidi called it. That was making love. You are gay, Duo. And…”

“Hilde, I’m not gay,” he interrupted her.

Smiling, she looked up at him and stroked through the damp hair sticking to his forehead. “Yes, you are. Maybe you can tell me you’re bisexual, but if you’re really honest, can you say it feels equally as good to make love to me as to Heero?”

For the first time in God knows how long his vocal skills deserted him. If he was really honest? No. “You’re right,” he said, after having looked deep in his own heart. “I do feel a lot better with Heero.”

“You are homosexual, Duo,” Hilde said. “And homosexuals don’t make love to girls.”

“Are you angry with me, Hilde?”

“Yes, I’m angry with you. You had a relationship with me for years and you didn’t mean any of it. But I don’t hate you for it. I’m not a rancorous person. I can hate you as much as I want, force you to live with me again, but you still would never forget him, would you?”

“Hilde, forgetting about him after all he has been through would be even more inhuman than all the inhumanity Heero has ever shown in his entire life. Have you seen those bruises? That’s what Doctor J did to him for just a kiss. It holds a lot of risks for him to be with me,” Duo said. “When Doctor J first found out we were in love, he threw him upon some twisted rack of his, drugged him, tortured him mentally and physically. So that’s why you have to understand, Hilde, that I can never stop loving him.”

A short silence hovered between the two of them. “That’s bad,” Hilde said impressed. “I didn’t know that. Poor guy, I feel so sorry for him.”

“Yes,” Duo said softly. “But I’m not doing this out of pity, but out of respect and admiration. But above all, out of true love.”

It was a truth painful to accept for her. He knew he had hurt the girl with that, but only Heero could give him what he really wanted and really needed. He didn’t use him for all his games and fantasies, in spite of what some people might think. Fulfilling his sexual needs might’ve been important, but his true love for him lay in sweet whispers and caring words.

“I’m sorry if I’m ruining your dreams and I don’t blame you if you hold a grudge against me now, but you just have to face it. Heero and I are gonna stay together. And not even you can change that. You can hate me if you want, but if you can’t live with that, Hilde, then I suggest you pack your stuff right now, walk out of that door and never show your face here again.”

“Would you stop it already, I said I’m not rancorous,” Hilde laughed lightly. “I understand, you belong to him now.”

“Really?” Duo said incredulously.

“Yes. It’s hard to accept for me, but I don’t want us to break up fighting, Duo.” She meant the words she said, though when she looked at his face, her heart gave a twitch, crumbled down in the ashes of a fire that once used to burn so brightly. Why did he have to be so damn good-looking anyway?

“You… you really are okay with it?”

“Yes, I am,” she smiled, while she started putting her clothes back on. “I’ll leave you two in peace. On one condition.”

“Oh? What?”

“That you don’t forget to invite me to your wedding.”

“Excuse me?! Wedding?!?! Did I miss something here?” Duo exclaimed, stupefied.

“No,” Hilde chuckled. “But if you say that you love him so much, then you should marry him. Don’t you think?” She got up and walked towards the door, waving him a negligent goodbye. “So long. I’ll find my own way out.”

Marry him… Why didn’t he think of that? Such a perfect idea, so simple, yet it hadn’t come to his mind until now. And then to hear it from Hilde, the woman who undoubtedly was still desperate for him in spite of the fact that she had shown herself relatively calm when she left just now. So then, from now on if Heero would say yes, he could consider him as his future husband. It actually made him smile, a sweet, dreamy smile that still lay on his lips when Heero and Heidi were done taking their shower.

“What the hell are you grinning about?” Heidi said.

Duo ignored her question however, and sauntered to his lover with a mysterious, love-drunk gaze and kissed him, tender, yet deep, while squeezing in his towel-covered buttocks, making him moan slightly. “You smell good,” he purred into his neck.

“What’s with you?” Heero asked.

“Nothing,” Duo sighed. “Absolutely nothing.”

“Oh, I know,” Heidi said from the bed, playing with the white towel that was wrapped around her body. “He heard us and now he wants some of the good stuff too. Not true, Duo?”

Duo threw her a sideways glance. Been fooling around in the shower, haven’t ya? “Maybe,” he said. “But it’s just that… Hilde has given me quite an excellent idea.” He heaved a happy sigh and kissed his sweetheart again, his hands softly tugging at the towel around his hips. “Heero, I wanna make love to you. My sweetheart, I love you so very much,” he whispered, pressing himself against him and holding him ever so tightly. “Let’s make love, Hee-chan. I want you, wanna feel you.”

Something wasn’t right here. Why was he so affectionate all of a sudden, why all the smooching? Hee-chan? Hadn’t used that nickname for weeks. Make love? His standard word for that was either “fucking” or “ screwing”, maybe “humping”, but when he actually used “making love”, then he’d better be on his guard.

“Duo, what exactly has Hilde done to you?” Heero asked uncomfortably. “And where is she?”

“Yeah, now that you mention it,” Heidi said, looking around. “She’s not here anymore. And her clothes are gone too. Did she leave, Duo?”

Somewhat reluctantly, the American abandoned the smooth neck he was spoiling and threw another glance at her, then turned back to his one and only. “Heero, would you mind going outside for just a sec?” he said, pushing him back outside without awaiting a response and shutting the door right in front of Heero’s nose.

“Heidi, have I got news for you,” he grinned.

Well, I never! Locked out of my own bedroom! What were those two hatching in there, what the hell were they talking about? So it wasn’t his nature to go eavesdropping, but he wanted to know. Duo didn’t throw him out his own room for no reason. They were discussing something, and sure as hell, he was the subject. All he could hear though, was an occasional cheer from Heidi, something like “Oh, that’s so great!” and “I’m so happy for you!”. Later on he could still hear Duo saying “So from now on you’ll have to start looking for someone else” and then Heidi “I understand. I’ll leave you two on your own. At least until the…!”

“Quiet dammit! He’ll hear us! I don’t wanna tell him yet! It has to be a surprise.”

Oh, surprise? What surprise? His curiosity was seriously challenging him, bugging him, almost to the point of kicking in his own door. He hated surprises. All the surprises he’d got up till now had been unpleasant ones... From Doctor J. However, he was aware that Duo would never give him something he wouldn’t like. Yet, he was still very skeptical concerning surprises. Certainly when it’s the kind of surprise which you know you’re gonna get *something*, only don’t know what or when. He couldn’t stand the tension bound to go along with it.

Too late, he heard the doorknob being pushed down, and as the door jerked open, he quickly straightened again, the knowledge that he had been caught eavesdropping clearly readable in his eyes. On the soft carpet, Duo’s bare feet had been inaudible to him.

“D-Duo…” he stammered nervously.

“Hee-chan? Why, you wicked little devil,” Duo said on a slightly reproaching tone, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “Have you been listening? Okay, speak up. What have you heard?”

“Well, not much. Only that Heidi was very happy about one thing or another, but also that she’d have to start looking for someone else,” Heero confessed, fidgeting a bit. “And also that you have some kind of a surprise for me.”

Narrowed eyes and a gauging look. “That’s all? You didn’t hear why Heidi was so happy and why she should start looking for someone else and what that surprise is?” Duo said, sticking a threatening finger out to him.

“No.”

“Honestly?”

“Yes.”

Duo still considered him for a few moments, contemplating whether he should believe him or not. Eventually he dropped his finger and put on a happy grin. Whew, he deemed it plausible enough. “Okay, then you can come in again,” he smiled, moving aside to let Heero enter. As the Japanese brushed past him, he could hear him grumbling something like “Can’t even come into my own room whenever I want to.”

“Oh, don’t be angry with me now, Hee-chan.”

Oh, can I ever stay angry with you, Duo?

“I only want to see you happy, that’s all,” Duo said, flinging his arms around Heero’s shoulders from behind and strolling their way to the bed again like that. “So, wanna make luuuv now?”

“No Duo, first you have to tell me something.”

“Since when are you making up excuses not to screw me?” Duo said, letting go of him and giving Heero the space to flop himself down on the mattress.

“Tell me, that plan of yours. How are things gonna go?”

“Yeah, tell us Duo,” Heidi said, her interest awakened too now.

Duo sat down between the two of them, beaming with self confidence and hope. “Well, actually it’s quite simple,” he said. “We let the old man walk in on us.”

“What?!” Heero snapped with a sudden quiver in his voice, recollecting his disastrous dream. “Have you lost your mind?”

“Don’t worry, Hee-chan. It can’t go wrong. I’ve asked Quatre, Trowa and Wufei. They’re gonna help us. They’re all gonna be there.”

“What do you mean? We’re just gonna do it in our office, make sure Doctor J hears it so he’s furious and will kill me, and the rest is just gonna stand and watch?!” Heero shouted.

“Well, we’re not gonna actually *do* it, just make-believe. I mean, it can’t be that hard. Just scream each other’s name a few times and he’ll know enough,” Duo calmly explained, ignoring Heero’s growing despair and fury.

“Okay, but Duo. Read my lips! He is going to kill me!” Heero said, clutching Duo’s shoulders and pronouncing each word pointedly.

“Oh, you really think he’ll get the chance to do that? Heero, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he’s not gonna harm you more than he already has! I won’t let him, he’ll have to blow me to smithereens first!” Duo reassured him.

“I’m afraid, Duo. I’m afraid. It’s not gonna work out. Something will go wrong, I can feel it, I just know it! Coz that’s what he will do, Duo, blow you to smithereens,” Heero sighed, his breath quickening to an ominous rate. The boy shuddered visibly and Duo understood the extreme terror in his voice and knew by the fact that he openly admitted that he was scared that he had to take him seriously. He had been through too much in his young life to just trust someone.

“It’s alright. Just calm down, I don’t want to have you hyperventilating again,” Duo said in a soft and caring tone, holding Heero close against him and soothingly rubbing his back. “We won’t let you down, Heero. It’s the five of us against one crazy, old, one-handed lunatic.”

“I’ll be there too,” Heidi carefully said. “Whatever you say Duo, I’ll do it.”

“See Heero? Six against one, he doesn’t stand a chance. Me, Trowa, Quatre and Wufei have thought up a plan while he kept you locked up. The moment he walks in, Wufei will throw his sword to his feet, and then it’s just plain strategy. I will lunge for his coat and snatch it off, Trowa will pin his arms behind his back, Wufei will get hold of his feet and Quatre, and you too Heidi, will keep a gun pointed at his temples if he tries to resist, and by God, he will. In the mean time I'll look for his tranquilizers in his coat, then we just kill him and he won’t be able to blow me to smithereens. It will be exactly the other way around. There’s no need to be scared. Okay Heero? Just calm down.”

“Kill him?” Heero yelled startled. “But Duo, that’s punishable!”

“Don’t you want him dead then, Heero?”

“I… There’s nothing I want more,” Heero whispered as his mind seemingly found it very pleasant to present him a compilation of twenty years of misery and pain. “But I don’t want them to throw us in jail either.”

“Nobody will, Heero. He has used and abused you, so many times nearly killed you, he doesn’t deserve any better. The police know what kind of jerk he is, they’re willing to close their eyes to this. We can kill him, Heero.”

Heero looked at him and let his brain digest his words, until it came to one conclusion. “That’s corruption, Duo.”

“Yes, that’s corruption,” Duo sighed. “But he has been corrupt for his entire life. I agree, training you for the war was justified, but not how he trained you. For once, Heero, for once we can be corrupt too.”

It took some convincing, but eventually Heero seemed to agree to it and he snuggled close against his lover.

“Thank you for doing this for me,” he murmured quietly against Duo’s naked chest.

Duo gave a little sigh and placed a soft kiss on the mass of Heero’s freshly washed hair. “If I didn't do this for you, then I wouldn’t be worthy of your love, koi,” he said.

Well now, wasn’t that sweet? “You know Duo, I will be glad when it’s finally all over. I don’t want to be a Perfect Soldier anymore, don’t want to take any more lives. It’s time to stop. Only one more time, one more murder. Yeah, Monday. Monday we will kill him... and the Perfect Soldier inside of me.”

“Sure thing,” Duo said.

“Duo?”

“Yes?”

“Is it true that we will go to hell?”

Duo looked at him with questioning eyes. “Why would we go to hell?” he asked.

“Because we’re gay. Doctor J says that. He says the bible says so. Is that true? Does the bible really say so?”

“Use your cute little head for two seconds, Hee-chan. How the hell should I know, I who have never touched the big holy book in my entire life? And even *if* it was true, I wouldn’t give a fuck about it.”

“Aren’t you afraid to go to hell then?”

“Honey, as long as you’re with me, I don't care where I go. The situation would be far worse if you were in heaven and I was in hell, or vice versa.”

“Oh yeah? Why?”

“Love, I still want to be able to fuck you when I’m dead.”

Heero laughed, and Duo smiled to see him laughing.

“You know, actually I don’t believe in a life after death,” Duo said. “Heaven or hell. Heaven's the clouds and hell is the fire deep within the earth. There is no such thing as angels or devils, only people can be sweet as angels or malicious as devils.”

“Really? Then what am I?”

“Ehm… I don’t know. Heidi, what do you think?” He turned his head to the girl, but stared at the sheets instead. “Heidi, where are you?”

“Her clothes are still here,” Heero noticed. “She has to be around.”

“I think it just got to corny for her and she hightailed. I already found it remarkable that she didn’t meddle.”

Heero laughed and hugged his boyfriend close. “You know, my dog’s name isn’t Nine at all.”

“Oh?”

“No. I just give him a number because Doctor J wants that. I also use that number to call him because otherwise he would get angry. Giving a name to the mongrel is a token of affection, he says and then I would have to shoot him. And I wouldn’t want that. He's such a beautiful animal. A Saint-Bernard.”

“That would be a shame indeed,” Duo nodded.

“Only when I’m on my own at home, when I’m sure Doctor J can’t hear me, I call him by his real name. Otherwise it just keeps on reminding me how many dogs I’ve already killed.”

“And what is his real name?”

“Rosha.”

“That’s nice.”

Duo let go of Heero and lay on his back on the bed. “Fly with me to the rainbow, Heero” he said softly.

“I will, Duo,” Heero smiled. “Duo?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you still feel like making love?”

“You bet ya!” he cried elated, and he sent Heero’s white towel flying through the air.

To be continued…
